Two things are clear here:

1) It seems to be like a HD-remake (Or Super next gen HD) and those games always sell for at least half price if not less than new games.

2) If the fps and resolution are the same on PS4/XB1 then they have gimped it for parity sake. We all know which machine is the most powerful now.

This is 30fps WITHOUT certain lighting effects and and Physx.

TressFX really made the character model seem more real though. The blowing in the wind or moving as she moved made for a much more cinematic feel.

I feel like the developers are lazy. I mean common "definitive" version at 30fps on perfectly capable hardware. I don't care if the PS4 is more powerful than Xbox1, I am sure both could have handled 60fps.

Just because you don't need something doesn't mean it isn't better to have it.

Every kind of game is better at 60fps than 30fps. The temporal resolution is much clearer (i.e. how well you can see things while there is motion on screen, which is most of the time in a video game). And the latency is much lower therefor the controller response is much quicker and, well, more responsive.

I do think going for 30fps is still the better trade-off for most console games. Doubling the framerate literally doubles the power needed to run the game.

PC gamers get the luxury of 60fps for every game (if they have a good enough PC). Whereas consoles devs are going to have to decide which is more important, 30fps with bells and whistles or 60fps with less bells and whistles. Personally, i care much less about 60fps third person games than i do first person games.

I think we will see a lot of this in this gen. Devs will decide what's more important in their opinion, 30fps with effects such as 4k textures, tressfx, 1080p, subsurface scattering, increased particle effects etc etc...or 60fps with less effects.

Not saying i agree with the devs in this instance, just telling you to expect it. To me, it depends on the game, i enjoyed AC4 at solid 30fps...but i don't think i would enjoy BF4 half as much as i do if it was 30fps (hated it on 360/ps3). It's all about compromising with the tech you have.

Battlefield? If so, it was definitely sub-30fps. It was horrible. Whereas GTA5 is also sub-30fps a lot of the timer and i can play that game for hours on end. It's just way more important for me for an FPS to run at 60fps than a TPS.

What is it that people like you don't grasp that a game doesn't need to be 60fps unless it requires fast twitch, which Tomb raider certainly does not..

You can't even twitch on a controller. Turn up the sensitivity on the joystick (if it's available) and make your character do a 360 degree turn instantly. You can't.

Over time, games have had to be designed in a way that compensated for this. That's why most modern third-person shooters chest-high walls and cover mechanics, so you can take your time aiming.

Tomb Raider was WAY better at 60FPS than 30FPS. I lowered the GPHX on my PC to get 60FPS. Same goes for Mass Effect(Didn't need to lower graphics for that though). Mass effect is MUCH better on PC than the consoles.

Before ME I didn't think 60 FPS mattered much for Tps. But yes, yes it ****ing does.

Btw, Tomb Raider on PC was pretty demanding for a multiplatform game. For example, my PC wiped the floor with Skyrim and Mass effect. Tomb Raider though, not at all. The recommended requirements are quite a decent amount above the Next gen consoles. GPU needs more power, CPU needs alot more power. I'd say it's a feat to have this game running at 1080P with a solid 30FPS

The difference being The Last Of Us is a LAST GEN game...LAST GEN, released on 7 year old hardware, Tomb Raider is also a LAST GEN game designed for 7-8 year old hardware, being re-released on brand new hardware at 60 dollars with the tagline "Definitive" yet it run's in 30fps, Killzone SF looks light years better, yet GG has that game running in 60fps, AC4 another last gen game for some strange reason runs at 60fps 1080p on PS4 and it looks better graphically, THERE IS NO EXCUSE .

I don't know what pc you have but with my i7 [email protected] and Radeon 7950 (overclocked to 1200MHz)I get about 37fps maxed(4xSSAA) on the built in benchmark.
I don't expect the PS4 version to get 60 fps easily if an i7 can't even get there without dropping some details.

I have almost the same setup as you, except with an i5 2500k instead.

4X super sample anti-aliasing is massive. I've never considered anti-aliasing settings as part of the basic graphical settings.

When I say I can run such and such game at Ultra settings it doesn't mean that I am running it with 8xSSAA. I can use SSAA through RadeonPro or the Catalyst Control Center but I don't think it is reasonable to have to max out SSAA in order to say you are maxing out a game's graphics.

SSAA is very demanding and it's basically there when you have a lot of performance surplus and you want to get the most pristine image quality possible.

The console versions with their post-process anti-aliasing don't even approach that kind of clarity and fidelity.

Yeah, IMO some games just look weird in 60 fps. The COD franchise always looked a bit odd to me, when they started locking it into 60 fps ; BF 3 and 4 look/play much more natural, IMO. I personally think it's laziness.
I mean, Yakuza Ishin runs at native 1080p at 60fps on the PS4. In the beginning of a new gen, devs tend to use brute force on the hardware. Not making use of it. Later on, devs will feel the need to actually optimize and stuff. It happens every gen.
Sometimes, it all comes down to the devs. Not to mention this is a last gen port.

As for gameplay your not getting anything new over the 360 and Ps3 versions but cosmetics and for me that doesn't warrant a full price game. I purchased Tomb Raider last year and it was ok. I didn't love it. Since there isn't much out for the Xbox One and PS4 (I have both), I was considering this game. I've played the PC version and it's a nice looker, but Tressfx is what kills the framerate.

Not quite sure how much they have added, as lara looks different from both pc/360/ps3.

I'll wait till i see it in full action.

As for alot of PC GAMERS. You'll never be happy with PS4/XB1 games. You'll always find a problem. One texture is wrong, it's ONLY 1080p.

I play BF4 on PC, and from high to ultra there is barely any difference except for your framerate.

I have to agree with you here. They say these systems are at least 3 times more powerful than the last gen, but yet they seem to struggle to do some basic things that even the last gen had accomplished on occasion.

By the way, if the developers helped to design the PS4, as Sony stated, then why is it taking so long for them to release quality games? Why would they work with Sony to develop something that was going to have the same learning curve as previous hardware/software? Makes no sense to me.

I think yall forgot this includes all the DLC, so 1080p 30fps locked with no framerate drops, and there's assets that's not included on PC especially her appearance with little bit more focused on graphical fidelity. You guys do realize that Infamous: Second Son runs at 30fps, right? New hardware doesn't mean that everything is going to automagically run at 60fps - as in every generation, it's one of many considerations that have to be juggled in development.

And if developers are bullied into doing that with each and every game, like you armchair developers seem to want to do, then they're likely to take resources from areas that they otherwise *would* have invested in, and we'll end up with a compromised version of their vision.

I understand if you already played Tomb Raider and don't see value in this glorified GOTY edition, but the idea that you were going to buy it at 60fps, but not at 30fps, is a joke.

Tomb Raider does have it's open world moments, but a good point you have. In my head, most single player campaigns that will give you a cinematic experience don't need to be 60fps. Look at Killzone's campaign. I think 60fps is more for games that require precise reaction, but that's just me.

@DarpaChief - the particle effects, yes, but rendering buildings is far less complex than a forest, with thousands more instances of geometry and polygons, and not to mention a lot more shadows. And it's for a last gen game, maybe it's poorly optimized/coded like you are saying... But then again, maybe the PS4 just isn't up to snuff to give 1080p 60fps on every single title, (including Infamous)therefore proving that a game can still be beautiful, without being 1080p or 60fps, and therefore, ALSO single-handedly destroying the basis of all the pointless hate on the Xbox One.

Long story short, we are gonna see great things from both Sony and Microsoft, and we all get to reap the benefits of having many platforms, games, genres, and experiences to choose from when it comes to playing video games. As any PC gamer will tell you, frame rate, notably locked (without drops, hitching, skipping, etc...e.g., "smooth") at 60 or even 120fps, is more important than any other visual attribute (including resolution). This is true of *all* games, not merely "run and guns" (which I don't play, period). For me, 60fps is simply essential; I cannot, and will not, play games at anything less (minus a hitch into the 50s here and there...30fps? In PC land, 40fps is generally considered the cutoff point for a game bordering on less playable than it should be; apparently our standards differ). Why? Not simply because the game is more enjoyable when played "smoothly," with much quicker reaction time (even with a 360 controller, which I use exclusively), but because the *game is far more enveloping, as an experience, at 60fps vs. 30fps*. Playing a game at 60fps vs. 30fps isn't simply "superior;" it's a different experience altogether. Why? With "smoother" animation, especially with character motion, the effect on your brain is such that you become much more "involved" in the experience of the game, where playing at 30fps is akin to "watching a film" (24fps, for the nit-pickers). Sure, you could argue that resolution also increases "involvement," which it does...but when you couple high resolution with low frame rate, the game still does not feel as real as it does with a lower resolution at 60fps. When I play a game, I don't want to watch a film...I want to feel as though I am "in" the experience. Quite simply, 60fps simply "looks" significantly more realistic, if you will, than 30fps, given that the human eye "sees" at the equivalent of 72fps, and this is a much larger factor than resolution, cooler hair effects (incidentally, it takes two 670s to run Tomb Raider on PC maxed with TressFX on at 1080p/60fps...that's nearly 5X the GPU power of XBOX ONE [I speak from experience: there's no way that, outside of the advertised improvements, this "definitive" version of the game running on "new" consoles can compete with the PC version of the game (which, incidentally, Tomb Raider was designed for)]...which, of course, means that as our hardware is as or more modern than yours, PC Tomb Raider maxed would run at about 10fps on XBOX ONE at 1080/60...), etc.

In short, stop talking about frame rate simply as an enabler of quick movement, etc...it is much more important to consider the "look" and visual effect of frame rate, regardless of how quickly one needs to move, and again, I don't want to watch a movie...I want to be "in" the experience (incidentally, PC games can be made to run in 3D, as well).

For those who continue to doubt, this is a simple demonstration of the difference between 15, 30, and 60fps. The difference between 30 and 60 is this: one looks "real," and the other does not. As such, as PC gaming includes the ability to raise or reduce graphical detail to suit our frame rate preferences, and as we can update our machines as we see fit in order to accommodate both, ...

p.s. this game was highly mediocre, though visually stunning, on PC when it was first released. This release doesn't change that fact.

p.p.s. the main draw of the game was the visual appeal of the girl (let's all face it; we cared about her plight because she looks like girls you wish you could get :) )...looks like they may have jacked that up, as well, though I'd have to play the PS4 version to be sure.
