I'm quite surprised about the third party stuff selling better on the X1. The first-party titles not so much because the X1 has the better launch titles but why third party party titles? Maybe its because of the two week lead? Not sure.

Since Xbox 360 was the best selling system in US and many people used Xbox Live and had friends there, i think it has got more to do with the transition from Ghosts 360 to Ghosts XB1 and same for BF 4.

PS4 has sold reasonably well but its predecessor, the PS3 wasn't really much popular when it comes to these third party ports.

The next COD and BF game sales will shed a better light on this situation.

It's quite obvious why X1 games sold better in December, the X1 sold more units than the PS4 in the month of Dcember, it's only logical that people are buying games with those consoles (duh).

For example, let's say the X1 sells 1 million units in December and the PS4 only sells 500k, then let's presume people buy one game with each system, you have 1 million games sold on the X1 and 500k on the PS4. It's not rocket science, whoever sells the most BRAND NEW consoles is obviously going to have the most BRAND NEW game sales to go with those consoles.

There where a lot of Christmas Specials for the PS3 versions during Christmas and I know a lot of people who bought the PS3 versions(mainly BF4)online and then paid for the PS4 upgrade because it was cheaper.

Sony has stated that they remain the cumulative sales leader for Nov+dec in NA.

Also, Sony was only barely outsold in December, which would mean that the 1 for 1 attach rate would not make a big difference to games sold for ps4 and xbo in dec.

According to your logic, Sony should have sold more games as they cumulatively have more consoles sold and their numbers in Dec were not far behind.

I'm not gonna lie, I love when articles come out like this and it makes all the ps4 fanboys scramble for their excuses. What they should also notice is that it's not some XB1 gloating party either, a few fanboy comments, but nothing to bad. now if this article was reversed it would be ridiculous with all the ps4 fanboys. Click the link. COD and BF are YTD numbers. According to NPD both are selling better on the Xbox One. First party games are also selling much better on the Xbox One according to the story. Keep in mind this is NA only. Impressive still since the PS4 has sold more consoles in the States.

I understand your logic about console sales creating more software sales. The two consoles sold pretty much the same amount in December according to NPD. Microsoft can claim victory in December, but it's by a few thousand units. The software totals don't even come close though.

PS3 and Ps4 still lead BF4 player counts daily in console terms (with the PS3 often topping PC), and have since release...the xbox one has averaged the least amount of people playing bf4, with the 360 not doing a whole lot better...

currently the xbox one only has ~27k players...while the PC, PS3, and PS4 all double that (or at least nearly in the PS4's case right now)

You have more exclusives on the market than Sony, so exclusive software sales you should win, as well as the PS4 being out of stock nearly most of December due to the EU and Korea launches.

When people buy their new consoles they more than likely buy at least 1 game with it. XBO was in stock all of December so that means they're sales were going to be up in the US, compared to the PS4 which was down and up a each week due to stock issues.

When you look at the Worldwide numbers you lost EVERYWHERE. Don't spin it for you to feel better. You did good, and if you take out Kinect you'll do even better with a lower price, and being able to ship consoles to other regions much faster like the PS4.

Since the 360 sold nearly double what the PS3 did in the USA last gen, the fact that the PS4 and X1 are neck-and-neck (or slightly ahead, or slightly behind, depending on who you believe) should be making Microsoft sweat bullets right now.

With the supply issues, it was a long shot that PS4 would outsell X1 in the USA, specifically with Microsoft diverting stock to the USA. And yet, PS4 is still sold out while X1 is available everywhere. And yet yet, PS4 has matched the X1 in North America.

Obviously, early sales mean very little, but instead of declaring this a "win" for Xbox (which sold nearly double what PS did in NA last gen) this should be correctly interpreted as a sign that Microsoft is losing their foothold in their last strong territory.

No offense, but you are the one spinning. Sony and Microsoft sold approx the same amount of consoles in December. It's a difference of a few thousand.

Microsoft has 30% more retail exclusives selling almost 300% more than Sony. They are also selling more third party games. This is being done with a smaller install base and a $100 higher console price. That is not an easy feat to accomplish. The $100 higher price should be cutting into game sales. Instead customers are buying more games.

Sony doesn't have supply issues. They choose to spread the supply they have over a much larger area. This is their marketing strategy and not a supply problem. There are less PS4's in North America because Sony sent less to the region by choice. In my opinion that was a mistake since almost half of the sales in North America occur in the fourth quarter, but that is what Sony wanted to do.

Last I checked stock aklowing ps4 was still ahead console sales wise in the usa... after all it sokd a million just in the usa in its first day-the xb1 sold a million split between usa and eu, in total xb1 sold 3.something million and ps4 is on what like 4.5 so since launch if xb1 sold say 2.5 million approx and ps4 sokd another 3.5 split mainly between the usa and eu.... unless xbox sold almost all of that in usa they would at the very least be about even? Even if there was like a 60:40 split usa:eu for xb1 and vice versa for ps4 then they should still be even. Check the PS1 and PS2 numbers by region and you will see Americans bought a significant portion of those consoles. If Americans were brand loyal like you seem to think, there would be no Xbox One.

The 360 and X1 controller have been the better controllers for FPS because of the stick layout. The PS4 controller is an upgrade, but the X1 I still like better, just feels more comfortable and natural.

The dedicated servers, we havent seen them yet. Hopefully Titanfall will use them.

This is about attach rate not about sales as its about games sold (not one game ALL). Also shooters selling better on Xbox? Really?? It's pretty strange, but Xbox 360 had a slightly higher attach rate despite the ps3 having the better exclusives when it was all said and done.

For whatever reason it seems like Xbox folks are more into buying things....

I think the fact that several free and f2p games were available to ps4 owners also played a part in this.

I think its more to do with the type of gamers and also xbox live.

People who bought a 360 tended to get it for online play and because there mates had it so they would go out and get the same games as each other like BF, Halo COD ect.

A lot of people who got a PS3 tended to get different types of games and play more SP and if you look at the numbers for games like FF, MGS, UC, LOF, GOW you can see that.

I think it all depends on the gamer but last gen live was the better service for online and the 360 had over 3 quarters of its users as a gold account.

I don't know what PSN is like on the PS4 as I don't own one yet but it will be interesting to see what happens this time round for the 3rd party games like COD, BF ect.

Psn is drastically improved. Really the improvement Is noticeable only issues are that DICE are morons and have no party system for joining lobbies together, they even acknowledge the OS based cross game oarties but dont allow you to use them.... AC4 has its owb party but also has some intergration with the OS one and killzone has done the great job of just intergratingnrhe cross game party into its multiplayer but as a first party game I expect nothing less.

For me I did get both but I saw it as a chance to have my main console the ps4 (if true free backward compatibility was their it would have been a different story)

Everyone I know plays COD and Battlefield on XBox. It's the sole reason they have an XBox for the community of playing online with their buddies. Hard thing to change although I'm sure a few jumped ship to ps4. Anyway the community XBox has for those games can't be beat.

I literally bought the XB1 to play battlefield. Sure it has a higher resolution on the ps4 but I just prefer first person shooters using the XB1 controller (thought the dualshock 4 is a huge improvement). Plus the FPS genre is much stronger on the Xbox (Titanfall and Halo this year).

The PS4 has its merits too. I think for story driven games Naughty Dog are where its at (though I'm excited to see what Quantum Break will bring to the table).

One thing I've noticed though is that the BF4 community is alot quieter than the BF3 one. Thats good in that you dont get as many annoying gamers but its also harder to communicate tactically too

With next gen upgrade programs and digital buying becoming more popular the NPD can't say what the actual attach rates are for each console since they only have the retail numbers.

That doesn't mean that the X1 didn't sell more games or has a higher attach rate, but we won't know if that is the case from the NPD data.

To be fair you would acknowledge both consoles offer their games in digital form. Neither are counted. If the retail numbers were close, maybe this would be a factor if you really felt there was an advantage in numbers on the PS4.

What is troubling is the amount of first/second party games reported.

1.5 million on the Xbox One vs 599 thousand on the PS4. This is the area Sony needs more sales in since it is where they make up the most for lost profit on the hardware. It will be interesting to see how launch impacted both companies financials.

Sony is in 53 markets? I didn't know that. If Microsoft had a revelation that releasing outside of their 13 major territories woul bring them many more sales, you could bet your car they would.

I offer congrats to micro for doing great in the US, like usual. But there are facts that can't be ignored no matter how much people try. Such as the ridiculous stock issue for hardware and Micros ridiculous advertising budget for their console and games. Including the deal Micro has for the COD contest with a 1 million prize.

There's no doubt that being on more countries would mean more sales for MS. But their struggles with manufacturing xb1's is well documented, as well has their struggles with localizing various aspects of their UX (kinect voice recognition, Xbox one guide etc)

They actually had planned to launch in many more markets, but pulled back at the last minute. And some of the markets they are in now don't even have all of the key features available.

It's pretty clear to me that they aren't in more markets because they are/were unprepared. Not because they don't see money in it.

As well as Sony's stock problems for hardware being well documented. Sony has a legit problem keeping the PS4 in stock, and that is being spun to no end by people who can't admit it. Sony is in more territories, but it is keeping stock low in major territories as a downside.

It is clear to me that Sony wants to be in more territories than micro, but it is not for explosive sales, as they have very little left to sell to the main markets. Sony has a small advertising budget and they want to get there brand out there to the world, and let it do the advertising for itself.

I don't think the numbers include the upgrade program. Also they don't contain digital sales. The majority of games I bought are digital and only a few of the games I bought for next gen are disc.

I'm surprised about BF4, as I thought PS4 had the better version? I guess that doesn't really determine sales though, as why would people want to play a game the way the developers intended it to play & look, when you can just stick to blind loyalty.

The other factor here is Sony's double edge sword of offering free 2 play even without a PSN sub, & then with a sub, the free games offered in sh1tloads by Sony.
Just have a look at the list of games PSN subscribers have had the ability to own since it's inception on PS3. I', sure many PS4 owners out there LIKE ME, that have bought masses of titles on PS3, only for them to appear a few months later on PSN+ for NOTHING, are reluctant to buy every game they want now, as waiting can be a fruitful experience.
Then there is the fact Ghosts got bad reviews & was panned critically, as people are finally getting Burnt out on a staling IP, same could be said for BF4, plus it's well documented online problems wouldn't help sales.
And, many PS4 owners were also anticipating Watchdogs MORE than any other launch game, only for it to slip, & to a lesser degree, Driveclub... Many PS4 owners are also more interested in getting Infamous:SS when it launches, rather than litter there collection with samely FPS's, that haven't evolved enough from last gen.

It was never going to be a fair battle with PS4 only offering one flagship title and one no hope in hell title. Kill zone I suspect took the lion's share of that 600k units, I cannot imagine Knack selling anything over 150k.

Funny, last gen it was said that 360 exclusives sell more than PS3 because there are less of them to choose fro and ps3 sales are spread out. This time around, even with more to choose from, Xbox main exclusives have outsold their PS counterparts.

I don't remember reading about PS4 games being in short supply for the millions that already own one. Especially when so many more people own a PS4 than an Xbox One.

If you assume that people typically buy the same number of games for either system then it would stand to reason that the PS4, with more than a million sales lead, should have more games sales than Xbox One. Numbers of consoles sold doesn't directly translate to software sales. As I said above, it was the same with Xbox and 360 over PS2 and 3.

As an example, if, on average, every PS4 owner bought two games but every Xbox One owner bought four then Xbox would have more software sales, even with the PS4 having that larger installed base. If that were the case then you could, possibly, make a wild assumption that it's because of the 1st party games being quite strong on the One at launch. So, let's say that both sides of the fence bought, pretty much, an even spread of third party titles (e.g. COD and BF4) but then Xbox One owners also bought Forza and Dead Rising, which both had strong review scores, then you can see how this is possible especially with Killzone being a highly traded first party game for Sony of which the sales would not be recorded for these statistics.

I'm not saying that's exactly what happens but it's logical.

People bought the ps4 because ps3 people are tired of the ps3. Not putting the ps3 down but there was no sense of innovation, plus for more than month it was down because hackers messed with it.

And the people who get xbox1 know that eventually down the line MS will bring out more innovative and exclusives. Ps4 like a fully loaded hyndai genesis verses a mercedes s550. Eventually that mercedes does what it does best in its class. Performance.

Saved having 3 disks for some games too, UNLIKE the innovative 360, which had regular DVD, as MS didn't even have the balls to back HD-DVD properly & include it in the system..... MS & INNOVATIVE is the equivalent of trying to put the 2 repelling sides of a magnet together.....MS & INNOVATIVE is like oil & water....that sh1t don't mix.....MS are the least innovative console manufacturer that has EVER graced the industry...I've seen Chinese companies do not off's called SuperPlayGenesisStation that are more innovative than MS...

I believe it... When I got my PS4 I had no games because there were none that I cared for... Even then I still had fun and a couple of games to play with. Now all I have is Fifa14 and I GameFly'd BF4... The next PS4 game I will purchase is MGSV. I was gonna said FF14 but that upgrade is free.
