Dying Light’s Chrome Engine 6 Means Techland Doesn’t “Worry About Platform Differences”

Dylan Z of iGR reports: "Studios have been coming out of the woodwork touting development advantages on both PS4 and Xbox One. We’ve heard pros and cons about working with both architectures. As such, I wanted to get the opinion of a developer that’s creating a cross-platform, cross-generational title; is there really that much of a difference?"

The thing that Techland needs to worry about is creating a fully functional game without game breaking bugs running rampant. They talk big talk but rarely deliver.

gcolley3746d ago

There were no game breaking bugs in either Dead Island or I wouldn't have finished them.

tigertron3746d ago

There were many game breaking bugs in Dead Island. The concept was amazing, but the execution was flawed.

I did like how big the island was though, it was MASSIVE and I was impressed with the scale, but that was before I even reached the jungle.

Hopefully Dyling Light is free from the bugs and glitches that plagued Dead Island. I'm really looking forward to this and hopefully they'll announce a release date soon.

C'mon I love the freakin' game but they released the damn dev version with cheat shortcuts and all. The title was hardly bug free on release.

If that's the case, then why isn't this game going to be included with the Wii U. Xbox 360 and Wii U have basically the same architecture, the PowerPC. Plus I'm sure that the Wii U can handle this if Xbox 360/PS3 can.

Unless....it turns out to be another half-baked port. Anyways, if does come out for Wii U, I'll be one of the first to buy it. If not, maybe I can get it for PS4.

Imagine it though, the possibilities with the gamepad. Crafting, Inventory, Scanner, Weapon Scope, Communications Pad, Map. And with the Wii U Gamepad's 9-axis, their could be a way to push off zombies by wagging the gamepad or other environment interactions. And thats just some of the features that could be implemented.

Concertoine3746d ago

because the console isn't selling well, and techland doesn't believe they should devote manpower to a system they arent even sure if they can profit off.
im not being mean, love the wii u, just stating it how it is.

unknownbystander3745d ago (Edited 3745d ago )

I partly agree with your statement, but since October, the Wii U has been moving units at a faster and steadier rate. With key titles like DK: Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 8, X, Bayonetta 2, Yoshi Yarn, and many more hidden exclusives coming out this year, sales will definitely increase.

Also, I have a PS4 that I can always turn to, but I had a history of Techland's buggy games of Dead Island and Riptide. We'll see how this game fares on the software point and will probably buy it then.

Still...a Wii U version will be nice. Especially because it'll make the game better gameplay wise (gamepad) and some graphical advantages compared to Xbox 360/PS3.

Why on this site do people think because a game isn't on WiiU that means wiiu cant handle the game WAKE UP WIIU HAS BETTER CPU THAN PS4 AND THE GPGPU WITH EDRAM SQUASHES PS4 SORRY.....

Shnooze3746d ago

Are you okay there, buddy? You seem like you've gone off the deep end.

Think I need to wash my eyes with bleach after reading that horrifying comment.

Even I think this is outrageous.

IN essence the Wii U CPU is a lot slower then the 360 one. However it has a few quircks that cause it to overtake the 360 CPU's in certain things :).

But you really need to optimize for it then, infact some developers have stated that with the proper optimisation it can give a Core I5 quite a run for it's gaming money ;).

The thing is at the moment NIntendo's developer kits and documentation is a bit... shite. UNlike Sony and MS, who actively go to companies to help them with the quirks of their consoles, NIntendo is more introverted.

Eonjay3746d ago

Thats all well and good but the problem is that the systems are not the same. They are saying that the engine basically complies the assets and levels to optimize each platform. But isn't that what everyone does?

Will their engine maximize the potential of both consoles or take the least common denominator approach so that they look identical? The systems are not the same therefore they should not look the same. If so, I argue that neither is truly optimized.

Skate-AK3746d ago (Edited 3746d ago )

Did you read the article to see the whole quote? At the end it says "our engine automatically optimizes everything with regards to each platform’s attributes. Of course, it’s not as easy as it sounds, but because of it we have more time to fine-tune everything by hand.”

Meaning the game gets running and playable a lot faster than before due to Chrome Engine 6. Leaving more time for them to fix bugs and use each platforms strengths to their advantage.

Eonjay3746d ago

Yes I fully understand that but I more of a I don't believe it till I see it sort of person when it comes to claims of maximizing a platform. Therefore I will be looking for each title to shone in its area of dominence. If on has a more powerful graphics core, I expect to see sharper details and higher fidelity assets.

Eonjay3746d ago

"Honestly it’s refreshing to see a developer that’s not trying to garner attention by stirring the pot."

What. Whats wrong with stirring the pot? Developers were very vocal last gen about the difficulties of working with the cell. Were they stirring the pot or being honest.

spoonard3746d ago

Anyone who says they don't worry about platform differences is lying.
