Dark souls 2
Witcher 3
Dragon age
X
FFXV(hopefully)

delmartian3751d ago

The only thing that kept FFXV off this list was the lack of 2014 confirmation.

We NEED a year of the RPG.

This gen needs to show a lot of these younger gamers that " hey games aren't just military FPS shooters ".

I remember when 1/20 games released was an FPS...maybe

Not it seems every 4th game is some random unneeded FPS game that is just a " checklist" game.

We need more:

* RPG's

* Strategy/tactical RPGS

* 3D Platformers

* 3D Platoformer/adventure/collect- a-thons

* New IP's...New IP's...New IP's....

* Every new IP or game or series or character is chance for history to be made, is chance to establish another well known character into our memories that we want to play as for decades to come.

Last gen there was more wasted opportunity and potential than all other Era's/ Generations before.

Completely Forgot about WildStar but that Art Style is amazing.

They also forgot Bravely Default for 3DS which is released Feb. 7th and is really the game that kickstarts this whole " year of RPG" thing off.

I'm hoping it does well, as I would love to see Bravely Second in 2015.

*grabs garbage can*

How come there's no X on those walls!?

juaburg3751d ago

Grabs a baby! Noooow they'll listeeen! X is going to be one of the best rpg's of this generation... I bought a Wii just so that i can play Xenoblade. Im 22 hours in and my god it is an amazing game... Its one of the best games of the 7th generation by far. Just a pity it werent that widely released :(

IamHaru3751d ago

This is an excellent list, but perhaps they left out Persona 5?

Snookies123751d ago

Doubtful that P5 will come out this year, perhaps in Japan by the end of 2014. That's a maybe though. We'll see, hopefully I'm wrong and it does end up releasing before 2015! I'm too stoked for that game.

rextraordinaire3750d ago

Well it's been confirmed that p5 will release at the end of the year in japan. I suppose it's gonna be early 2015 in the west, it always takes some time for them to localise games, like it did for Catherine and Dragon's Crown.

ErryK3751d ago

Already have FFX HD Vita paid off, Kingdom Hearts 2.5 HD ReMIX, I'll pay off soon enough and Lightning Returns Collector's Edition paid and done.

Bring on the RPGs.

CrossingEden3751d ago (Edited 3751d ago )

Western rpgs ftw. Can't wait to finish off the big rpg trilogies.

The 7 Best Western RPGs: Immersive Adventures

RPGs are often huge, sprawling endeavours. With limited playtime, we have to choose wisely, so here's the best western RPGs available today.

SimpleSlave13d ago

"I started playing games yesterday" the List... Meh!

How about a few RPGs that deserve some love instead?
1 - Alpha Protocol - Now on GOG
2 - else Heart.Break()
3 - Shadowrun Trilogy
4 - Wasteland 2
5 - UnderRail
6 - Tyranny
7 - Torment: Tides of Numenera

And for a bonus game that flew under the radar:
8 - Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

DustMan13d ago

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.

Inverno37d ago

Infinite but not the first two games? Witcher 3 but not the first two games?? GTA V but not literally any of the games before it??? Portal 2 but not the first? Also if you're going to play Shadow of The Colossus play the remaster and not the remake. Can't say I disagree with the list but my man it's all over the place.

Name Last Name37d ago

I mean some sequels are objectively better and you don’t need to play the whole series.

Inverno37d ago

But most of these games have a story to follow, sure you can catch up with a YouTube vid but where's the fun in that?

LucasRuinedChildhood37d ago (Edited 37d ago )

A list like this isn't telling you not to play the previous games if you want to. It's just giving you legendary games to play.

But tbh, you don't always have to force yourself to play every entry in a franchise to get to the better ones.

- The vast majority of Witcher 3 players never played the first 2 and had a great time. The first 2 games aren't in the same league.
- The GTA games are self-contained with the odd fun reference. You can easily jump into any of them.
- The Shadow Of The Colossus remake looks and controls better than the original (plus it has a 60fps option while the remaster is just 30fps). New players will enjoy it more.
- Portal 2 is a lot better than Portal 1 and takes the concept much further gameplay-wise. Storywise, Portal 1 is fairly light too. Not that you shouldn't play it but realistically ... you'd love Portal 2 whether you play it or not (at lot of Portal 2 players have never played 1).

Bioshock 1 is the only one I agree with you on simply because it's one the best games of all time and arguably better than Infinite. No other setting like Rapture.

Looking at the list, I'd recommend playing Uncharted 1 before 2 but no doubt, 2 is the legendary one you have to play.

Inverno37d ago

I get it, but that's just my opinion on his opinion. I just think that before you play a sequel you should still play what came before it. Maybe it's just me but i find it fascinating playing through the first game in a series and seeing how it has evolved through its sequels. Like I said I don't disagree with the list, other than SoTC which I strongly believe the remaster of the original should be played above the remake.

AuraAbjure36d ago

Awesome list! Hot take on Fear (and it's hard af expansion Persaus Mandate!) Bioshock Infinite is stellar, so is the Witcher 3 and you nailed it by having Ocarina of Time. So many fantastic games! Gotta play 'em all! Next one on my list is Prey after I beat Dead Space 2 and Splinter Cell Conviction.

Hidetaka Miyazaki claims Dark Souls 2 “carried” the series forward

Dark Souls 2 remains a divisive entry in the landmark RPG franchise, but Hidetaka Miyazaki believes it led to the success of Elden Ring.

The game isn't good though.

Rols52d ago

DS2 was fine. While there was a bit of recycling assets or ideas for bosses, it was a bigger more open Dark Souls. The Fume knight boss is one of the hardest bosses in the series until Sekiro and Elden Ring were released.

CrimsonWing6952d ago

The problem with Dark Souls 2 was the same problem when a different director takes over for a sequel to an outstanding movie. It typically (there are exceptions) doesn’t have the feel and vision of the previous movie.

I wouldn’t say Dark Souls 2 is terrible. Had Dark Souls 1 never been a thing and we got this, I think it would have been praised more. The problem is it didn’t have the Miyazaki touch to it and felt pretty derivative. The soundtrack is a banger though.

Aussiesummer52d ago

And it will happen in the future when he doesn’t touch them as he is planning on.

MrBaskerville52d ago

I like DS 2, might even be my favorite of the 3. But it's a hard sell, there's so many obscure things you need to do to make it an enjoyable experience. So always find it hard to recommend, but it is worth the trouble.
