He could easily base his argument on MS's past. Dropping XB1 (the first of it's name) support, starting strong with 360 then fading more and more into Kinectland toward the end, spending massive amounts of money on ads and timed exclusive content instead of more games, the attempted DRM policies so many people didn't like that it caused MS to drastically change their XB1 strategy (at least for now).

As for the power advantage, the differences in resolution on a multiplat like Call of Duty are a definite red flag. Last gen, 360 got the better of multiplats and much was made of small differences. So far this gen, the differences are bigger and they're in PS4's favor. PS4 is both more powerful and easier to develop for, so that trend will continue.

It's pretty obvious which console you should get. The one which appeals to you more.

Launch titles are virtually meaningless when it comes to getting a console going forward. Look into 2014 and 2015 and decide which console has games that appeal to you more. Also keep in mind the advantages one has over the other. Do you have a diverse library of games and enjoy indie titles and JRPGs? Get a PS4. Are you a primarily FPS gamer and use your console for lots of media purposes? Get an X1.

If you can't decide for yourself, then just get what your friends get :P

I see the difference.

Killzone looks better than anything on the Xbone.
BF4 runs at a higher resolution, and a more stable framerate.
CoD runs at a higher resolution.
AC4 runs at a higher resolution.
DR3 runs sub-30fps
Ryse runs below 30fps, often hitting below 20fps.

Launch titles alone are proving that the console, even in its very young age is already easier to take advantage of from a hardware standpoint. It's proving that Sony has built a far more powerful console for gaming.

On top of that, you have confirmed articles stating that even other functionality works better on the PS4. The browser is faster, game installations are faster, voice commands are more responsive, etc...

While that 50% is certainly subjective, the PS4 has already proved it is more capable at running game software games with the superior multiplatform games which seem to be dominating sales(on both consoles).

It's a no brainer. Exclusives and games in general will come down to personal taste. Only insecure fanboys like to list wars and say one console has no games. Especially when people seem to be buying the one with 'no games', right? Irony, ;).

I'm bored of this idea that the xb1 has less potential. Everything about the xb1 shouts of variety. Variety in the way it can be used and interfaced with. Variety in the media it will be able to play. Variety in the games, much more than with the 360 where I agree fps and driving games were more prevalent.

MS is really going hard for games this generation by building up loads more studios dedicated to games.

Just because the PS4 is more powerful doesn't make its future brighter. Many of my pc gaming friends have way more powerful rigs than me, yet I can still play the same games they can. On the odd game, like metro or crysis3, I have to drop some AA but so what, the gameplay experience is still king and the game still looks totally amazing.
XB1 games will look fantastic and so what if they have to drop a little resolution to achieve a playable frame rate. So what!

I love my PS4, it's awesome. I don't own an Xbox one and my justification is my friends are playstation owners so to enjoy games with them i have to play on playstion and i'm happy with that. When the games come for the Xbox One i want i will buy one and get the same amount of enjoyment as i do from my playstation.

I went the other way from Xbox 360 to PS4 but to be honest right now Xbox One has better games lineup than PS4. On Xbox One you have Ryse, Forza 5, Dead Rising 3. The only interesting thing on PS4 right now is Killzone Shodow Fall and Resogun oh and there is Knack but it's just too boring for me. I know with time better games will come out on both consoles but really if you want to play cooler games for now get Xbox One but as time pass on PS4 will have better exclusives.

Why would it be a risk? If you like what a console offers you, then buy it. If you don't, keep your money. I chose PS4, because I know Sony's track record of bringing strong titles throughout a console's lifespan. Therefore, for me, the launch titles aren't that significant to me. What the author is not considering is that cloud computer could be done in the PS4 too. While the Cell Processor was PS3 wild card (although utilized late in the generation), cloud computing (if ever done as Microsoft is saying) is something that both consoles can do. Sony has Gaikai, and while right now they are only intend to use it as a way to play classic games, that can change in the future as technology advances. There is no advantage for Xbox One even with the cloud. It could have an early one, if Microsoft starts implementing it sooner, but that doesn't mean it will work as well. By all means, it could end up like the first Kinect which advertised so many great features but couldn't make even one 100% as advertised.

Time will tell though. Just like the article say: "Time is money". Developers want money and they will go anywhere they can get as much as possible, and right now it seems that that place is going to be the PS4. Obviously things can change, but there's no way to know.

In the current state of Bandwidth and internet speed.... using 'cloud' computing for video game data processing is a joke. Even with a 1gb connection... it's not remotely close to the bandwidth speed between a CPU and a GPU. It's useless unless all the data is already predicted, and if all the data can be predicted, you might as well do the vector calculations locally ahead of time or just bake everything in. Doing the calculations locally and ahead of time could turn out to be more efficient because of the wait time to get the data to and from the server/queue it/process it. Then the biggest issue of all happens with intermediate connection cuts. To handle those events, well.... like I was saying, it's currently pointless to even try to use 'cloud' computing for single player games.

If you really want to argue this be my guest, but you obviously have never programmed a game before....

Not totally true. Gaikai relies on a program running somewhere and the stream being sent to your screen at home. That's why there has been lag on Gaikai services since inception. You're playing, essentially, someone else's hardware remotely. Azure, and the way the Xbox is built with the eSRAM, will process information THEN compressed on the eSRAM and deployed from there. The hardware is built to function with the cloud. That's why MS is insisting that slow connections won't hurt the flow of the game. It's not dynamically processing, it's just removing calculations and easing up hardware requirements.
That said, Sony will likely have a hard time matching actual server numbers. MS is very far ahead and has other reasons for having Azure (licencing as well as a ton of other consumer products that make use of it)

sorry to say gaikai is not abig industry it is not even released world wide but is limited to some asian countries ,where azura clod is words biggexst cloud service with most servers and gaikai cloud computing was never designed for graphics processing ,where azura can be utilised in many ways becasue it is having mindblowing servers MS is saing it again and again to utilise it for graphics processing ,if true it will be a great advantage for them ,but still it is not proved we will see it next year especially in halo 5 as rumored but please stop making ps4 look better ,for me both are great ps4 is having better hardware and xb1 is having still great hardware but little cloud processing will help it to compete with ps4,i dont know cloud will make xb1 better then ps4 or not but i can guarentee that cloud will help it staying at same level with ps4 and both will being amazing graphics and amazing art style on both consoles.

People (expletive deleted) on "The Cloud" but like the Cell it will take a little while to iron everything out and utilize it fully. For those who think the internet requirements will derail it, I think you should all remember how expensive and rare high-speed was when the 360 released...hell, when the Slim was released. Last gen the biggest launch story was that Dead Rising DIDN'T support SD properly...enough bleeding-edge early adopters or the then next-gen didn't have an HD TV to play games on, enough that it was a big deal that DR didn't support sub 720p. We are now at 4k, not to mention the virtual invention of all-touch cell phones (and look where those are now, in terms of gaming), tablets that were a pure luxury that are now (slowly) killing PC sales, and everyday home appliances, from refrigerators to smoke detectors that rely on being always connected. People think the internet will be an issue 3 years from now? Get out of your Y2K shelters and look around.

What ever this is, "The Cloud" is a buzzword in gaming. I can't believe people seriously believe that hype.

It is a new way of thin client computing expanding into gaming, nothing more. Sure, MS will offer their own cloud focused API with probably (windows) OS and Dev tool integration but at the end of the day it is some server side services with a client side API to access it. And Azure & Windows is just one platform doing it. Most Unix(like) servers will do something similar and MS will most likely not limit it's clients to windows. So, with that said, "the cloud" is just a new approach harnessing networked resources and it will be available to all platforms (this will include the PS4).

And yet, it is so irrelevant for (couch) gaming. A constant internet connection will be necessary. The bandwidth requirements (and probably synchronous transfers - higher upstream speed??) will be necessary. A typical online game today does not require bandwidth higher than a couple of KB/sec (50-100KB/s is easily sufficient) - but signal bounce times are far more important (<150ms ping required).

If rumors are to believed Titanfall will have troubles getting 720p stable. How's that about the cloud advantage??? It does nothing for those games.

Personally I would have stuck with PS4. Really unlike what fanboys will tell you, it is about what games you like. Sony and Nintendo have more to offer ME than Xbox1. I am not saying Xbox1 wont have great games, but there is only so much time to play games, so I chose Sony and Nintendo. Also the PS4 has the extra power, so I can only imagine what Sony will do with that added power next year.

Right now though I am playing Wii U, much more than my PS4, but that is because the Wii U has a very nice library of games out for it now. Next year at this time, I would expect to be playing the hell out of both systems.

Cannot go wrong with either console. PS4 is an awesome console although as of now i am using it for Resogun and KZSF which are exceptionally good, waiting from some more exclusive, but it is brilliant. Recently i have been playing the xb1 more mainly because i'm loving Forza and deadrisng 3. if you bought the xbox one over the ps4 or the ps4 over the xbox one, you cannot regret it as they both are awesome and will get better over time. Despite having hardware differentiation i think the xb1 will be able to stand up to the ps4 on the graphic counterpart with ease, Ryse proved that and KZSF proved what the PS4 is capable of. In the end either choice is no wrong choice.

You've manage to but together a well thought out and well written article, however you're conclusion has a flaw. I don't give a hot skittle which next gen system you purchase it's your money I'm a gamer not a fanboy I go where the games are. However when someone writes an article that taints the gamepool so to speak I respond. Did you honestly buy into that cloud computing sludge MS was selling. Do your due diligence man, cloud computing and/or tech whatever you want to call it these days has been around since the 50's utilizing large mainframe computers. You honestly think MS is now going to pull off the amazing feat of next gen by improving AI computations with their cloud service with as you stated yourself generic piece of hardware retailing for $500 bucks. I hate to bust your bubble their is nothing next gen about either Xbox One or PS4 they are simply updates like the apps on your smartphone. It's all going to come down to games being developed for these systems including the Wii U.

Just to bring back some fond memories for the OG's and hip some of you Similac gamers to which console and games where next gen by these companies.

So in my conclusion if the PS3 is at fault for you making a decision to purchase the Xbox One as it appears MS is taking a risk. Just remember Sony has cloud service as well yet they are not touting the claims of MS.
IMHO if you have not purchased a next gen system yet save it for the release of Titanfall and Second Son because if some promised tech with no proof of life is your deciding factor "Chaka Khan"

Moving from Xbox 360 to Xbox One pretty much means leaving your friends which is a shame, so I kept one of my slims so I can jump back on.

I'm really impressed with the Xbox One. Once they get the voice recognition to work a little better, it will be a great platform to sit on daily. I can imagine that any of you guys with a PS4 will feel exactly the same way.

Isn't that exactly what both manufacturer's wanted? Isn't it great! ;) I would love it if in the future the 360 and Xbox One could cross chat and voicemail. For now though, no matter which console you choose, enjoy what you have and game on!

I was a die hard Microsoft guy, had Xbox since begining. I now own ps4 and xbox1. Let me tell you when playing bf4 on xbox1 the graphics were alright and games gamma levels are to dark on xbox1. But on ps4 graphics are gorgeous with no need to adjust the gamma levels. I can't stop playing bf4 on ps4. but I have to say ps4 is definetly the way to go if you are a true gamer it's simply more powerfull and the proof is right in front of my eyes. It is a noticeable difference in graphics and gameplay on ps4. Screen shots do not do justice when trying to compare ps4 and xbox1 trust me ps4 shines. I was very hopefull of xbox1 being the better but this time sony has taken the cake. Sorry Microsoft but I think you should have concerned yourself more with games and graphics not all in one entertaining. It hurts me to say this but sony is number 1 this time. Maybe next gen Microsoft.

To any PS3 owner deciding to make the jump next gen. Either console will be a great decision!!! At the moment Xbox One has more games and the multiplatform games ive played on both console run slightly better (quicker load times) on Xbox. There is alot it does well but thats to much to explain.

On the other side you have PS4. Awesome graphics, better install times. But its lacking in game( at the time)dept with only Knack and KZ:SF being only true exclusives then you have some indies like Warframe, Blacklight,DCUO and some others... multiplats do look amazing on PS4 with almost everygame running at 1080p as opposed to X1 720p reso for most games.

Both consoles have there advantages and disadvantages.
I am in no way gonna tell someone how to spend their hard earn money. After having extensive times with both consoles at this early stage (a lil over a month). I would say if your looking for "next gen feel" pick up Xbox One. Altho less powerful and some simple things left out (storage management, no battery life bars, etc.) The Kinect and features make it feel more next gen, IMO.

PS4 is not as feature rich as Xbox One but does some of the samethings and you know the games are coming (arguably the best 1st party games in the business) with Infamous 2nd Son right around corner. Look if your a true gamer then there is no bad decision. You have other things to help make decision like which one do your friends and family have. What you feel overall for the company your supporting. Anyway good luck.

What makes these systems next gen IMO is the upgraded hardware, new controller design, integrated social features and video streaming.

anyone bringing up COD as some sort of "red flag" against the capabilities of the X1, only need to look at Ryse to completely destroy their argument. Seeing how the X1 can run a game as detailed and hardware intensive as Ryse, just shows that the final result of COD, had more to so with development, not the system. MS may have played a part in this by sending out dev kits late, but the problem(s) doesn't lie with the capabilities of the system itself.

Ryse is a bad example in my opinion due to its sub-fullHD resolution and framerate drops to 16FPS.

Now Quantum break is a much better example since the game is running in 1080P at a rock solid 30FPS.

Xbox One over PS4, I did, why? Because of what M$ can deliver. They might not have the powerhouse that Sony (apparently) have. But they have a solid infrastructure, and like it or lump it, they have the cashflow to build on it.

Games, TV, socialising, once the updates make the system more robust, and more content and apps appear on X1, that will cement X1 as a powerhouse.

They fail to realise what history shows about console exclusives regarding the playstation and xbox and the trend that will follow based on what we saw last gen and the gen before that. They are supporting a console that gives you less exclusives, less variety. Now that gears is done with and bungie gone, you will get the same forza/fable/halo just like last gen and the one before. Any other exclusives shown are online only, mediocre and clearly not AAA. The wii u is even better than xbox on.
