Microsoft Is Watching: DRM Interrupts Killer Instinct Tournament In NYC

NEW YORK, NY -- Much to the shock of no one that owns Sony's Playstation 4 Video Game Console, it appears that Microsoft's insidious Digital Rights Management System, or "DRM", reared its ugly head during a local tournament for the Xbox One title Killer Instinct in New York City on 12 December 2013. During a live broadcast of the tournament on Twitch.tv, it appears that Microsoft's DRM system on the Xbox One activated, dropping the players back into the Xbox One Operating Systems' "Home" screen and prompting them to verify that they "own this game or app". It took nearly four minutes to resolve the DRM issue by connecting to the Internet to verify the software as genuine. This issue may prove to be a deal-breaker for the Tournament Organizers Party, which may opt not to run tournaments for games on the system, including Killer Instinct, should DRM issues such as these continue.

reynod3774d ago

Np there must be some hack out to circumvent the DRM.. oh wait its a console, no freedom of speech.

"oh wait its a console, no freedom of speech"

....how is that a "freedom of speech" issue? It's closed hardware; no one expects to hack it.

reynod3774d ago (Edited 3774d ago )

No MP3 support cant do anything about it,
No DLNA support cant do anything about it,
Take away other OS cant do anything about it,
Charge to go online must comply,
No support for external hardrive cant do anything about it,
No bc cant do anything about it.
No Mod support cant do anything about it.
Developer wont fix a broken game cant do anything about it.

List goes on, you have no freedom or say on the hardware you buy other words completely controlled.

@blacktar

Its a question of freedom, you'd gladly give it up :) ?

Games are another debate, cant compare a platform with thousands of games on its catalog specially to new consoles which hardly have any games, specially the launch line up terrible.

BlackTar1873774d ago (Edited 3774d ago )

hey Reynod,

No last of us, no uncharted, no halo the list goes on and on and on.

Being a little excessive in defining what freedom is.

Options that don't exist arn't an infringment of my freedom. If i used your logic i could think of a 100 things my phone doesn't do but can claim that i'm giving up my freedom?

Sarick3774d ago

@reynod
Yes, you can do something. Don't buy it if you don't like it.

I didn't buy any next gen systems yet.

SilentNegotiator3774d ago (Edited 3774d ago )

@reynod

Lines 1 and 2: Other than wait for the confirmed patch in (at least for Ps4, pretty sure Xbone will, too).

Line 3: If you want a different OS, buy a computer without a proprietary OS.

Line 4: If you don't want the features and free games, see line 3.

Line 5: Patch coming for Xbone and Ps4 allows you to switch out the harddrive anyway.

Line 6: So? BC can't continue forever. Even an elitist can't deny that even on PC, playing "any" old PC game is often a hassle of unofficial patches and emulators...why would we expect console makers to deal with that stuff forever?

Line 7: Most people don't play for mods. They play for games crafted by the professionals.

Line 8: Do you support paying for broken games on PC just because someone else might fix it? No wonder we get so many crappy/broken versions of games on PC.

Narutone663774d ago

@SilentNegotiator, I agree with you. See Diablo 3 as an example.

XxGOWxX3774d ago

Reynod, since when has there ever been any freedom?

IE, You cant buy a car and do whatever you like to it, theres laws on what you can modify and laws on how you can use it.

Everything you buy is at your own risk. Companies dont owe you anything unless they have falsely advertised the item or it is faulty.

No one is forcing you to buy a console.

miDnIghtEr20C_SfF3774d ago

This is the same thing it does on the 360. This is such an non story but the Sony faithful are trying really hard to make this into something.

thekhurg3773d ago

The trolling at the end of that article was hilarious.

You know what boggles my mind when people say "ill go for the company that cares about gamers" neither SONY, nor Nintendo nor Msoft give a sh** about you only your wallets that is why they are called COMPANIES, does anyone at sony know you, no they dont care about you.

wtopez3774d ago Show
N4Flamers3773d ago

That is rather immature. Yes companies care about you. They care about keeping you happy with their products. That is the sole reason Microsoft reversed all their drm and fired Don Mattrick. It's just naive to say that companies do not care about consumers. They realize we keep them afloat. That is the reason Sony have developed a more gamer friendly console.

you do know who makes windows right?

360ICE3774d ago

"Freedom of speech", he said!

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. Also, we're all for hacks to circumvent the DRM."

Freedom of speech? if you could just pirate everygame then MS/Sony and the game devs would bleed money,

Its like me walking into your home and opening all your windows so people get in while screaming freedom of speech i can do what i want..

kane_13713774d ago

I know that MS messes up alot, but really, this article is just asking for hits, I mean: "It took nearly four minutes to resolve the DRM issue by connecting to the Internet to verify the software as genuine. This issue may prove to be a deal-breaker for the Tournament Organizers Party, which may opt not to run tournaments for games on the system, including Killer Instinct, should DRM issues such as these continue."

really?
Really?
Come on guys, I love PS, I love everything sony, FFS my banner is make believe!
But this article is as low as one can get, for real?

Another quote for you here : "Much to the shock of no one that owns Sony's Playstation 4 Video Game Console, it appears that Microsoft's insidious Digital Rights Management System, or "DRM", reared its ugly head during a local tournament for the Xbox One title Killer Instinct"
Why is this article even starting with that line if not for anything else but stupid hits?

OmegaShen3774d ago

Keep talking, PC just keeps losing games.

So hows GTA5 for you on PC? Oh wait..... its not even on PC, oh well at its not like games sell better on consoles <_< lol.

N4G remove this troll.

If n4g removed the trolls it would lose 80% of its readership.

last i heard is that they released a day one patch to kill off the DRM or is that not the case anymore????

timlot3774d ago

Every game has some type of DRM.

H0RSE3774d ago

You got disagrees, but you speak the truth. For all you that disagree, try playing a game on your console without the disk in the machine. Let me know how that goes...

Biggest3774d ago

But that's not D(igital) R(ights) M(anagment). A disk is physical. What are you talking about H0RSE?

Kayant3774d ago (Edited 3774d ago )

Well apparently iirc DRM wasn't even in the box according to MS in the first place.

"This behaviour is only because we are in pre-release. When we launch, console will work exactly as you expect today on 360," he continued. "For sure this has nothing to do with requiring a connection. There is no "DRM removal" in the Day One update because none of the consoles were ever built with that stuff in it." - Albert Penello

http://www.oxm.co.uk/65862/...

So is this another of Albert damage control campaigns?? Who knows we need more info on this first as there isn't anything to go by here.

Edit - After some digging around I found this article on gamespot --> http://www.gamespot.com/art...

It seems the XB1/main profile needs to first be configured to "My Home Xbox". As this message may even appear even when you're online according to gamespot.

Skizelli3774d ago

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't they say that DRM would still be left up to the developers? This seems to be a KI issue, not a console issue.

maddskull3774d ago

actually the drm is still in he console so microsoft could simply turn it on at anytime it jut turns it off

Volkama3774d ago (Edited 3774d ago )

It's a digital download. Some form of DRM is inevitable and reasonable.

Otherwise as soon as external drives are supported every game would be free with very little hassle required.

Volkama3774d ago Show
Toon_Link3774d ago (Edited 3774d ago )

Data on psn has an owner attached to it so if the console you are playing on has that account tied to it the content can be accessed. You do not however have to be signed in or have a Internet connection to play that content. Only one time sign in (which you need to download content anyway) to register user on device then you are good to go. So yes still rdm but much more reasonable than having to always check in.

If I go to my friends house and bring over my console I expect to plug it in and play the content I own without having to login to his Internet to verify I am still me. If you think that's ok business practice that's on you but no one should have to bend over backwards to play a game they own and constantly verify yes I'm me and I still own my content.

Even if you could load game data on external hd and can be copied all you should need is a specific account that can access the content (a one time sign in) and nothing else.

Btw no one said they want to get games for free that was some conclusion you jumped to. This article is about a tournament that had a hiccup because drm booted the players out of a game to check ownership and I don't see how that's ok especially in a competition setting.

Volkama3774d ago (Edited 3774d ago )

Think you'll find the policies pretty similar, unfortunately this website didn't do the research to share the details. In this case the owner of the content was probably signed in to multiple consoles (being a tournament) prompting the check for obvious reasons.

Not that I touched on that in the initial comment anyway.

Klad3774d ago

Not kill, just disable, but who knows, they could probably enable it at any time with another update.

Playing a digital game with your GT on a console that isn't your home console? Then you need to be connected to the internet. Same as on PS4. Nothing to see here...

Kayant3774d ago

"The owner of the Xbox One console said on stream that the DRM check "wouldn't happen if you go [into] Offline [mode]", though he followed up that statement with "it very rarely happens [at home] If I'm Online... once in a blue moon"

Also if you watch the video the person was *Signed* into their profile. The account was must definitely not a new account as it had over 26,000 GS. Also if am not mistaken if you buy characters it will be linked to your account and KI only has one character unlocked by default.

For people questioning *Watch the video* in the article.

Volkama3774d ago

Sure, he paid for that content. How many other consoles was he signed into at the time I wonder? If the answer is "more than 1" then it's no wonder it breached a drm check.

Article is fanboy trash that doesn't attempt to establish facts.

jimbobbeers3774d ago

Yep, exactly the same. Yet you got a ton of disagrees, too many fanboys trying hard in here.

Barlos141d ago

I'll have to get this! Been a big fan of KI since the very first one.

Petebloodyonion141d ago (Edited 141d ago )

I love KI (still play the old arcade version) but feel like the Xbox version is like a big intimidating chessboard with no easy way to instruct you to play chess.
The game is so deep in terms of little things to do that it makes Smash Bros melee look like a casual experience.
Honestly, doing a combo Breaker is punish/reward by itself but hey you can add a counterbreaker.
Here's what you also need to know
Breaking Shadow-linker
Instincts
Shadow counter
Auto double,
linker, manual
ender
etc,

There isn't going to be any chance of this being played at tournaments unless it appears on all platforms like all fighting games.

SPEAKxTHExTRUTH145d ago

SF5 didn’t appear on all consoles and was still played at Tournaments. I’ve seen KI tournaments recently so I don’t think your opinion is accurate.
