Microsoft Is Watching: DRM Interrupts Killer Instinct Tournament In NYC

NEW YORK, NY -- Much to the shock of no one that owns Sony's Playstation 4 Video Game Console, it appears that Microsoft's insidious Digital Rights Management System, or "DRM", reared its ugly head during a local tournament for the Xbox One title Killer Instinct in New York City on 12 December 2013. During a live broadcast of the tournament on Twitch.tv, it appears that Microsoft's DRM system on the Xbox One activated, dropping the players back into the Xbox One Operating Systems' "Home" screen and prompting them to verify that they "own this game or app". It took nearly four minutes to resolve the DRM issue by connecting to the Internet to verify the software as genuine. This issue may prove to be a deal-breaker for the Tournament Organizers Party, which may opt not to run tournaments for games on the system, including Killer Instinct, should DRM issues such as these continue.

Otherwise as soon as external drives are supported every game would be free with very little hassle required.

Data on psn has an owner attached to it so if the console you are playing on has that account tied to it the content can be accessed. You do not however have to be signed in or have a Internet connection to play that content. Only one time sign in (which you need to download content anyway) to register user on device then you are good to go. So yes still rdm but much more reasonable than having to always check in.

If I go to my friends house and bring over my console I expect to plug it in and play the content I own without having to login to his Internet to verify I am still me. If you think that's ok business practice that's on you but no one should have to bend over backwards to play a game they own and constantly verify yes I'm me and I still own my content.

Even if you could load game data on external hd and can be copied all you should need is a specific account that can access the content (a one time sign in) and nothing else.

Btw no one said they want to get games for free that was some conclusion you jumped to. This article is about a tournament that had a hiccup because drm booted the players out of a game to check ownership and I don't see how that's ok especially in a competition setting.

Think you'll find the policies pretty similar, unfortunately this website didn't do the research to share the details. In this case the owner of the content was probably signed in to multiple consoles (being a tournament) prompting the check for obvious reasons.

What freedoms and choices does a console grant you over a PC?

- ability to upgrade/swap hardware? No (don't even attempt to justify this with mentioning changing the HDD in the PS4. It has no bearing on game quality or performance.)

- backwards compatibility? No - I just built my new rig last year, yet I'm still able to play classics like Doom, ROTT, Baldur's Gate and Deus Ex. Those who bought a next-gen system, can't even play games released a month before their new consoles launched.

- ability to mod games or use mods? Go play any of the Elder Scrolls games on your console of choice. Now go play the same game(s) or even just watch a vid of them on PC with mods - they are like different games. They can easily double the replayability.

- edit BIOS settings? No
- ability to play retail games without the disk? No

- freedom to install a different OS? No. Yes, I know technically you can mod xbox to run Linux, but it isn't really designed to do so - PC's are.

- m/kb and controller support for games? No. I can use an xbox controller for virtually any game I play,. and if I can't, there is usually a driver to enable it. In order to get "true" mouse support on console, you need third party hardware, like a XIM3. The prime difference here is that the driver I might need is free, while the hardware console players would need, is not.

- access to the largest library of games? No. PC's have the largest library of games available. They have more than all the Playstation's combined, or all the Xbox's combined. They likely have more games available than both combined, largely thanks to indie developers and operations like Kickstarter. The medium also pretty much has a monopoly on the MMO and strategy genres.

- ability to do tasks that aren't entertainment related (like word processing, audio/video editing, photoshop, etc.)? No

- freedom to download unofficial/community made patches/updates? No. I bring this up because for many games, community made patches have been really helpful. Ex. the community made patch for Oblivion, fixed over 2500 bugs that Bethesda didn't. With a console, users are essentially at the mercy of the developers or console manufacturers for all their fixes.

The console is a closed-system. Not only are they closed in terms of hardware flexibility, they are closed in terms of their functionality. They are designed for specific functions, whereas PC's are not. You can build a high-end gaming PC, which still functions as your work PC, which still functions as an entertainment PC, which still functions as a productivity PC, etc.

PC's offer vastly more choices and freedoms vs consoles - this isn't even up for debate. When you choose to buy a console, you are choosing to give up these choices and freedoms, in exchange for a more affordable alternative and ease of use.

PC's may cost more and require more know-how, but you get what you pay for, and the knowledge needed to maintain them will more than pay for itself.

Yes, DRM was the first priority followed by TV. Games were thrown in just to confuse those that can't see past the firt two parts.

All consoles have DRM in one form or another. On a Playstation, the invisible force that prevents your friends from playing all your downloads without your password is called DRM. The same mystic force that requires your disc to be in the drive to play a game you ripped to the HDD is also called DRM. You can stop pretending DRM is an Xbox exclusive. The DRM you are still oddly fascinated with allowed your games to be ripped to the HDD and then accessed remotely from another Xbox without the disc being needed for verification. People are trying too hard. LOL. DRM on 2k14 on the PS4 and XB1 but only MS is using DRM. Then how come 2k14 DRM works on a Sony console. Sony brags about how all games will be 1080p/60fps, then drops the framerate for an ip to 30 but we give them a pass for promising what they couldn't deliver. Sony Defense Force is brilliant.
