Xbox One owners unite to spur Microsoft to improve system

Microsoft has put a lot of stake and claim into their next-generation contender, the Xbox One, but it appears that the Redmond-based tech giant still has a lot of work left to satisfy gamers. There have been many complaints on the Xbox One’s interface, including the scrambled square-based UI and lack of an Xbox Guide, and users are putting pressure on Microsoft to make some changes.

Still can't understand the issue with the guide like the 360. Yeah it was useful on the 360 but that's because it took ages to get back to the dash. With the Xbox one it's barely a second to get back to the dash. Also dunno if it's just cuz I'm in ireland and there is still functions missing but I don't find the dash cluttered at all. I removed the pins for the ones ms had pinned already, pinned my games and Netflix and have been having no issues with it. One of the biggest peeves I do have is the achievements not liking that it's a separate app uve to boot up

Man can this be put to bed now? I love my PS4, I love my X1, whichever system you got, enjoy it, make the most of it. There are no doubt some kinks to be ironed out, and they will with updates to firmware. That is the nature of the console business now. Please people, and myself included too, as I get drawn into the ridiculousness of everything, lets move on, Next gen has arrived. I have never attacked either console, just cannot stand the hate that goes on, by both sides. If the 'other' guys system really gets under your skin, please go find a new hobby. That website is great and I'm glad Microsoft has acknowledged its existence, most of the feedback is spot on - I agree with the original poster though a guide in the 360 sense is no longer needed, if a guide was implemented as the center button then how would I quickly return to the home screen?

Voice commands work well 95% of the time, except for Xbox on, I frequently have to say it multiple times, today in fact it would just not work I must have tried a dozen times before I gave up and hit the home button instead

We had it on the Original Xbox as well.

They are so dumb they don't realize how dumb they are, which is why they think the choices they are making are correct, when they aren't even close.

It's hard to expect a clueless company to automatically "get it", when they obviously don't "get" whatever it is in life there is to "get/understand".

@alexkoepp is your Xbox one set to power saving mode? (Basically turned off) easiest way is check the power brick, if the light is white then kinect should work, if its orange them the system is off.

Not had any issues with turning on the system with kinect.

And if I have played with someone (a random) on KI for instance, I still cant figure out how to go view their profile/add them as a friend etc...

I brought my X1 over to a buddies last nigh without the kinect and we were playing some BF4 and I was saying "Xbox Record that" and "Xbox, snap Music", etc. never would have thought it was something that was a cool feature until you get use to it then don't have it lol I love the kinect!

You can just press the Share button on the controller and without the need to "Snap" Game DVR.

When I come home I can do pretty much anything without even turning the controller on.

I would NEVER want to use the xbox one without the Kinect hooked up!!

And this is coming fro someone who owned a 360 and was curious about the original Kinect. I sat on the fence and waited for a game that showed what it could do for me. Never happened.

So honestly I am waiting on that game to use it in conjunction WITH the controller. Because I feel that Kinect is better served to add to a game verses trying to use it for gaming alone.

Kinect in BF4 I ended up turning it off as the leaning and in vehicle use was not that great an experiencec.

Forza 5...the headtracking ...why they chose to change it from head movement to leaning boggles my mind. Why would I want to lean left or right to move my drivers in game head?? My buddy told me on the last Forza kinect tracked your head movement.

Overall I am VERY VERY impressed and hope that devs use it since its there. BUT I dont want tacked on BS.

OHhh BTW its minor but in NBA 2K14 I got a technical foul cause the kinect must have heard me cursing. You can call timeouts and double teams...its OK not mindblowing...I have used the timeout out loud at times.

I figured a way to add people you meet or met while playing a game. What you have to do is remember their name or while playing say Xbox record that. Once you have their Name or Live Login then go to Friends and then click on Find Someone. Type in their name and then you should be able to add them. Hopefully they will fix this soon but this is the best remedy for now..

It's never been easier, and I couldn't be happier. Sure, there are some things that could use polish, and some things that need to be implemented, bt isn't that expected? Microsoft has said they are on it.

think of the Xbox360 dashboard as it was at launch, and as it is now. Nowhere to go but up. It's gonna be oookkkkk. As long as I can say "Xbox, go to Battlefield 4" "Xbox, Record that" "Xbox, Select" and "Xbox, Go To Netflix", I'm as happy as a clam.

And clams are pretty happy, seeing as how they don't have all that much to complain about. :D

The general consensus is that when the voice control works, it works great and feels great. It's just when it doesn't, that's when the experience is tainted.

And there are certain scenarios for some particular gamers that don't always allow them to use voice commands. For example at a party or gathering with a lot of people and noise, or at night time with a spouse in the bed. You might have no choice but to use the controller to navigate, that seems to be the main source of VALID complaints of trying to navigate the UI. That and trying to manage data is a nightmare, as well as trying to add friends or join a game isn't good like it was on the X360.

And those complaints are coming from hardcore true Xbox fans. It has nothing to do with PS fans.

I totally agree, I've had no issues in navigating around the system be it with voice command or a quick button press. I live in England and i'm sure we are missing over half the features out in America (Tv guide). But i would have to agree the lack of battery indicator, hard drive management, missing friends notifications has to be corrected soon. But if we think back to the time where the ps3 and xbox 360 were first released, there were so many features missing. What i'm trying to say is these features will come in time. I have both the ps4 and the Xone and at the moment the ps4 is the more polished of the two but i do really enjoy using my xone to hop in and out of games, tv and Netflix with a simple voice command.

I think the title and article are embellishing how upset users really are. People are just asking for more features/fixes as usual. Microsoft has already said a lot of these are already in the pipe for the next update so it's not like they aren't listening.

It's been out two weeks. You can't say it's taking a long time for new features to come after two weeks.

It takes time to add and properly test completely new features. I knew the Xbox was going to fare worse than the PS4 in this regard for a couple reasons though.

Reason one, it's Microsoft. This is how they do things. Windows 8 wasn't so much a bad OS as it was a mishmash of unfinished ideas leading to having to rely on both the metro interface and the desktop to manage to manipulate all the settings you need to manipulate. The experience feels compromised and cobbled together.

Reason two, the DRM about face. Making a drastic change to core functionality 6 months out was something I always expected to affect the quality of the product at release.

Reason 2. Me and a friend talked about this. Changing the system from what they initially planned im sure has to have effected how the launch system turned out.

Im enjoying what we have now and look forward to seeing the system grow. If the 360 is anything to go by I know they will make changes over time.

Also...I dont believe everything we want will automatically happen. I feel the XBOX one is its own system and there are some things that we just have to get used to.

One of the complaints I read is about getting to your friends list. One feature they added that more need to use is "Favorites" take the time to make important people on your friends list "favorites"

So when you say Snap Activiy>Favorites ...they are all right there to see while in game etc.

At the moment I dont think you can snap your friends list. I think this move was made based on having a 1000 friends limit. Just a guess. I think thats why there arent notifications for friends going off and online.

Thats what the news FEED is for. But I would like in the future to have the option to see a notification for "Favorites"

ms is a software company , they run their own software on the xbox which is really nothing but windows 8 it shouldn't take but a few days to a week to make any cosmetic changes. some of the changes and additions like audio codec support was already in the works but no reason it should be delayed or absent for a lengthy period.

It seems to be a mix of rushed/incomplete features of the X1, mixed with users being unfamiliar with new tech. The Xbox One is not Xbox 360 2.0 - it is it's own system, with it's own way of doing things. Many xbox players, myself included, were probably a bit confused initially when trying to navigate the UI, but this is expected. I'm sure similar scenarios presented itself when people migrated to Win 7 from XP.

Although there are genuine concerns, I'm sure there is a helping of "fear of change" mixed with the frustration, where players just want everything to work like they're used to. Sorry guys, welcome to technology... X1 (and PS4) will undoubtedly go through many changes, so you can un-bunch your panties now...

I do find that the Kinect seems sleep like really passed out and I have to say "XBOX ON" pretty FIRMLY for it to hear me.

But once its ON....I can sometimes say things pretty low and it hears me. I have had a few days where the Kinect was like having a tantrum and it wasnt working that well. But the last week it has been just fine.

I come home...and check to see who is online. Go to TV. Check notifications. change channels. And there have been times that I havent even turned the controller on until I was ready to play a game.

I almost wish I had went all digital instead of getting four games. Going digital...being able to just say Go to (insert game) without having to swap disc!

I hate the fact that the game costs the same as retail but that luxry of going from game to game as quick and easy as kinect makes it happen is just about making it feel well worth it..

I have the same problems from time to time somedays it works great and others i have to speak a little louder. My biggest complaint on the tv feature is the channels, i have a lot of hbo's east, west, family ect.. But all i can say is watch hbo and it takes me to the first hbo channel, i wish i can say channel up or down that would be great.

People have to understand there will be constant improvements coming. When DRM change came into play it took every team to get it done for launch... so things were left out. Now they will have time to add and perfect the OS.

I've had some of these same questions, I thought i just needed to look harder in the system to figure out how to do some of those things. I only get to play maybe a hour or two a day except for on the weekend, and I'm still kind of feeling my way around. I learn something new just about everyday. Its good to know all the issues I had are being looked at. The 360 got better as time went along, I'm sure the XBone will also. With that being said, its BAD ASS right now like it is and I'm loving this console and the games I have more and more everyday.

First 2-3 days with the system I was in the settings menu everyday lol. Basically learning what everything did.

One feature I wish I could turn off in game or in the system settings is "AUTO RECORD" BF4 and NBA2K14 will record moments automatically. I want to disable it.

Im surprised no one mentions it. Its seems that most are focusing on popular 360 features that havent made the jump.

I think the ones who say its messy etc just dont understand it. It took me until THIS week to realize that the boxes under the main screen at home to the left of the "disc insert box" <<<couldnt think of the correct name lol. Anyway...I ddnt realize that those 3-4 boxes showed apps that are open lol

Also I read somewhere that the system will have two apps and one game open at any given time. I also know that some apps like Skype when in use will stay open and you can bounce from app to app and lets say you open twitch then go to IE...it will close Twitch. WHile Skype is still open and in use.

One other thing that I would like to see is all SNAP apps have a mute or volume control. I KNOW its possible because TWITCH which can be snapped has a MUTE option!!!

I think the biggest reason people are a bit pevved off at M$ is because of the showcase presentation the had at E3 showed an almost complete and fully working system(later found to be ran off a PC) and what they have been left with, which is really, still a work in progress riddled with holes.
But I will admit this as well, Sony are no better themselves. I have a ps4 and I feel that its OS is still not complete. but that my opinion though.

Well I do think the UI is pretty poor and I hope they have any option to pick a background instead of it just being a pure black screen. I don't use the kinect and navigation of the UI without it is awful but you're right it will improve.

There are so many features and capabilities missing from the Xbone UI that have been on the 360 for years its like taking two steps back. MS pushed Kinect so much they forgot to add features and made others overly complicated. Simple things like being able to add a motto, location, and bio to your profile are now completely gone. Maybe its nitpicking, but its an example of something nice that added a little personality to a profile and made them interesting. A multitude of little things like that, which have been on the 360 for years, add up into a let down which makes the Xbone feel incomplete.

They need to update the XBOX ONE UI in several areas. Having said that at least my Live account was just not hacked. Sony just announced they found "unusual activity" on PSN accounts. I guess they got hacked AGAIN.

I think that this site is great though and it is even better that MS has taken the time to use it as a guide for updates.

As an engineer I always try to consult the users of anything that I design but ultimately have to make what I think is best. The real key is to go back after your customers have your product and have used it for a while and pick their brains for potential improvements. I have always found that do that is a double win.

1. The consumer buys into your product more as they feel a personal involvement in it.

2. No matter how well you design something it will not be perfect. Your customers are the ones who will notice the flaws and are your greatest source of potential improvements.

A site like this is a handy self improvement tool for MS. Most of the great ideas their fans have in one central place. Great job Xbox One fans and MS.

I assume you would prefer to receive a product that is never improved once received.

The majority of people including you have zero concept of the fact that when something is designed by an engineer it can only meet the specifications given to the engineer.

In a perfect world you would know every possible use and potential failure mode. Thus you would design the perfect product.

In the real world an engineer has to balance functionality with many constraints. The largest ones being:

1. Time limits - it is a simple fact that the engineer is given a delivery date for a product and that is generally determined by economics not engineering. Simply stated in the Xbox One's case it had to be launched so as to available for the holiday rush. It made more sense to launch it and update it than to get too far behind the competition.

2. Money - Every engineer would love to have an unlimited budget but this is the real world and that does not happen. Budget constraints limit materials, testing, labor, etc. So you are left with launching a product that is never exactly what you started out to design. Some things you just could not afford to develop and get dropped off other things you determine that are more financially sensible to add on after the fact.

3. External constraints - the big example of this is the backlash due to the DRM debacle. This machine was designed both software and hardware wise with Always Online DRM from the get go years ago. 6 months from launch they had to make major changes to that and at that point in order to push the product out on time they simply had to sacrifice many things. Most of those things are still doable but not before launch. That is why they are telling people that they are working on it.

4. Real world vs. theoretical - any engineering is started in the theoretical realm. The theoretical realm requires assumptions. When you get a final product it never meets all initial assumptions. You also use approximations when engineering a product you rarely get to work with data that is exactly what will happen in the real world. We are exceedingly good at being close to real world(you would never see a finished product otherwise) but can never duplicate it exactly.

After all the above constraints and many more unmentioned ones you have to put the product on the market. This is when customer feedback comes into play.

A good manufacturer knows their product is not perfect and actively seeks advice and assistance from its customers as they are now using it in the real world and not a lab. You can take that feedback and use it to your advantage as I stated in my first post. That is what I am congratulating MS on.

You I am afraid fall into the category of the type of person that never creates anything but is ready to criticize anything others create with no knowledge of what it take to engineer something. Crawl back to your couch it misses you.

agreed but they did get tales of vesperia.. One of my all time favs Asbel.. After a few yrs of nothing from them, i sold mine.. Had PS3 from the beginning & knew what i wanted in February & got it 11-15-13

Dont talk bad about xbox fans on here.. They will attack in swarms til your bubbles are completely gone.. Its plain & simple to make a decision.. If u are more interested in GAMING, go with PS4.. If u are more interested in media options, go with xbox.. Both consoles will do both things but will focus more in one area than the other

if microsofts focus is to win in the media area why would they charge there users gold subs to utilize all the media functions when the other competitor consoles and pc doesn't? Netflix and hulu was the most utilized services out of all the last gen consoles on the PS3. More people would buy the X1 if the media functions was free. It really turns consumers off when they boot up the console and are prompted to go gold just to utilize the apps they are already paying for. Some casuals barely game and buy consoles soley for media functions alone so why should they be forced to go gold to utilize any media function? on PS4, Wii U and PC you can watch your netflix for free. Please don't bring kinect into the equation because everyone doesn't care to utilize kinect and long before kinect was introduced to xbox microsoft still had these bs policies.

I think it's clear from this article that there is a group of impassioned, hardcore Xbox gamers who are fighting to get back features on Xbox One that were important to the hardcore gamers, e.g., centralized access to core features such as friends lists, achievements and system settings.

It's also clear that Microsoft's broader focus to enter the tablet market and dominate the living room is having a detrimental effect to the Xbox OS with respect to the hardcore gamer user experience. By pushing Window 8's metro interface as a unified user experience over all platforms (desktop, laptop, mobile phones, tablets and now the Xbox One) they inevitably are diluting the previously extraordinarily well crafted Xbox feature set that served hardcore gamers so well.

I think that is the primary driver for the creation of XboxFeedback.com website. I think there is a good side to this story in that it shows that the impassioned, hardcore Xbox gamers, which helped propel Xbox 360 to such great heights are still impassioned about the Xbox and willing to go to extraordinary efforts to help Microsoft provide the features that will keep these gamers.
