Sony Bringing Original Shows To The PlayStation Network

Earlier this year Sony registered a domain called PSNAdvertising.com, though at the time it led nowhere. However, that's changed as a little digging from our Tuffcub found that the domain redirects users to OnlineSPT.com, a site that is aimed at advertisers. However that wasn't the most interesting discovery made while looking around the site.

Should be interesting to say the least, maybe we'll get some game universe inspired ones that don't suck like game based movies.

I'm wary of their movies switch to a streaming only model. Prefer to DL them like on PS3.

I'm pretty sure that Sony can create content just as compelling if not more so than Netflix, after all, Sony is a movie and TV content creator themselves. that own many studios like Columbia and Sony pictures. also, they are already creating shows for their Crackle service that are pretty good.

Crackle is Sony's? I had never heard of it until a few days ago, when I saw it as an option on the XBox One video marketplace. "Free with adverts" it said.

Sometimes it's almost like MS and Sony don't hate each other, but you always have to remember that something sinister is afoot from whichever company you irrationally hate.

Well, if they are creating content, I sure hope it is better than Sony's last foray into original show creation. Namely, "The Tester". Man, there were some cringe-worthy moments during that show! Yet, somehow, I just couldn't turn away! *hangs head in shame*

And also introduce third party ips like assassin's creed and potential new ideas ip that if they are popular enough they could use for future games.

Alot of people forget that the PS3 is like a small scale supercomputer. From a processing standpoint, it is still up there with the next-gen systems. Graphical fidelity is of course not there due to the antiquated RSX, but most racing SIMULATORS are more heavy on processing anyway.

In any case, this is a business decision, BUT it shows heavy faith in the PS4 to be just as strong as it is now two years later. Releasing GT6 on the PS3 is a no-brainer business decision as you have a fully saturated install base on the PS3. Two years later, after fixing mistakes and building from the racing games that are capitalizing right now should make the game pretty epic.

One of the few things i liked about Xbox Live, was the "Inside Xbox" show with the 2 English hosts.

But MS closed that well over a year ago for some lame reason like it was "to redirect sources to new gaming experiences". Nothing ever replaced it (shocking, i know!).

If they brought Playstation Access more into the fold to do shows like that that'd be awesome =)

Not really reaching, this sounds like a mirror of the ideas MS pushed at the XBox reveal. The Stephen Spielberg Halo TV series and such. Aiming higher and broader than 'Inside Xbox' or 'Qore'.

Most likely this has something to do with their subscription tv service they have been working on which they will release across the Playstation line.

Oddly no one has said anything about the fact this has nothing to do with gaming. Microsoft has been crucified with their "cable box" that also plays games by Playstation fans while Sony has been working on a way to turn the Playstation into an actual portal for paid tv service.

To be fair Sony worked hard to keep games as a main focus on the Ps4 which is why gamers (gamers + games. shocking i know.) reacted positively. They're adding all this TV show stuff on the side for those who want it.

M$ on the other hand unveiled it to gamers (still with me?) as a cable box... A cable box... for gamers. And treated games a side thing. M$ might be scurrying around acting like that isn't the case but they made that pretty clear at the Xbone's unveiling.

I think Microsoft made the mistake of assuming gamers knew the Xbox One is games first. Gamers have been playing on the Xbox platform for quite some time now. I don't think it occured to anyone at Microsoft that they needed to explain the Xbox One is a games console so they focused on added features.

Sony is trying to recapture lost marketshare. They felt it was important to tell gamers that they plan on doing this by focuing on games first. The interesting thing about that is I never heard anyone claim Sony lost their focus on gaming. The only thing the PS3 lacked was RAM which is why cross chat never materialized. Other than that, the PS3 was a great console.

Now look at what each company has done. Microsoft announced they were spending 1 billion on games for Xbox One in May. http://www.gamespot.com/art... They launched with a pretty solid lineup of first party games. Somehow this has been twisted into being other than a game console.

Sony announced they were focusing on games first. Since then they have reached a deal with Viacom to release tv content on the platform. http://www.nytimes.com/2013... Then they announced VitaTV, which gamers are claiming as a gaming device, but seems just as likely to be a cheap alternative device for their streaming tv service much like a Roku or AppleTV, but also has the ability to play Vita games and stream PS4 games. We hear much more each week about Sony's media plans, yet people still claim they are focused on games first. I find it odd that none of their announcement back this up, they actually prove they are more concerned with non-gaming functions.

In short what Sony says and what is happeneing is not the same. On the other hand people claim Microsoft is focusing on non-gaming aspects, yet they are investing more than ever on gaming.

PS fans are used to original shows, as that's something we had on PS3. We also know Sony has their hands in a lot of shows and movies, like Breaking Bad and Amazing Spiderman.

Thing is- and I know how difficult this must be for you to understand- they still wouldn't be pulling a Microsoft: games will STILL be first. They won't suddenly be promoting shows more than games, splitting the resources of the PS4 to provide more multimedia functions.

But don't let reality stop you. You've gotta make this sound like hypocrisy, right? Even though you know damn well that there's a difference between providing additional content, and making that content a focus of your console.

I find it sad that Ms sacrificed their latest console to focus MAINLY on the TV viewer and created a lesser gaming console in the process.

By all means please explain the difference to those of us that don't understand that such a thing exists. Is my phone a media device that also makes calls or a phone that also plays media. The only ones I see that make the distinction are those that are unable to understand the technology that enables a game machine to also have media capabilities isn't that difficult. Since Sony "accidently" left out free DNLA streaming and MP3 playback, it is a "game machine" first. Somehow fans ignore all the media capabilities that remain that require a subscription. Since you have to pay, these features don't count? Microsoft offers free media capabilities so it is a media console first?

It's an interesting view that some have of the two machines.

Think of it this way,Think of the PS4 as a High performance sports car and Sony as an Automobile manufacturer. Sony built the PS4 to be a world class performance machine...and then added a nice audio system to it.

Now, using that same logic with Microsoft and the xbone.

So many people are saying this is cool, and while I'm not an MS fan, they panned this very same idea when MS said they were doing it.

Sony aren't keeping games as a focus. They're focusing on them just as much as MS. They both had like the same amount of launch titles (which all sucked), and will probably have roughly the same amount of games owing to multi-platform titles. There's very little difference between the Ps4 and the X1, just as there's very little difference between Sony and MS and their future plans.

Sony is a legitimate media company. They make Music, TV shows and oh yeah Movies. Y'know like the latest Spider-Man trailer that's rolling out this week. They are not new jacks to doing this. They own content and make content as well. This move has been in the works for a long time and should be of no surprise to anyone. If you didn't think they were going to bring this to PSN, then you probably don't use a PS3. Sony's Crackle video service has been around for a while now, and it's even on the Xbox360 so I don't know how some people are accusing Sony of copying.

By the way I really enjoyed "Chosen" which is a Crackle original show, and the second season is coming soon.

Not really interested in shows. I'd rather see Sony use their money on gaming content to be honest. Each show they produced in the past was basically a giant commercial. So I'll remain skeptical until proven otherwise.
