PlayStation Network Announcement

SCEE Blog:

''We are aware that users are experiencing some disruption to the PSN service. To minimise the inconvenience we have suspended the “redeem voucher” functionality whilst we investigate further. Unfortunately this means that money cards, product vouchers, PlayStation Plus vouchers, PS3-PS4 upgrade vouchers and any other vouchers for digital content are not redeemable at this stage. Other PSN features such as log-in, online multi-player gaming, PlayStation Plus trial, PS Store (excluding voucher redemption), trophies, messages, friends etc. are all available.''

Too many dang people buyin up PS4s all over the world. This is your fault, sony. Making PS4 so appealing--WHAT WERE YOU THINKING

MizTv3798d ago

Still sounds like it's working better than the us governments health care web sights

tenacious_b3798d ago

Web sights? Please tell me you're kidding.

KwietStorm_BLM3797d ago

Is that some kind of new age ADS reticle?

Evil_Abed3798d ago

Really? So the network was able to handle the 80 million plus users but suddenly an extra million users(which consists mostly existing users) is causing problems? Help me reconcile my logic with your nonsense.

curtis923798d ago

Your logic isn't working right. 80 million weren't on PSN all at once for starters. And secondly, when a service gets flooded, it goes down. That's freaking internet 101 man.

Evil_Abed3798d ago

So you are saying PSN has never had more than a million people log in at the same time? Must have not heard of a little game called Call of Duty.

This is just a spin to try hide Sony's incompetence. Every time there is a downtime on psn, PS fans claim it is because of new users or some free download or whatever. Me, I call it like it is. Incompetence.

Ju3798d ago (Edited 3798d ago )

^^ Of course it spiked with a new console release, Captn Obvious.

LordMaim3798d ago

Considering the last time this happened was November 15th for a few hours, I don't think its a stretch to see its about the EU launch. A couple million users downloading updates and free games all at once is gonna cause some congestion.

curtis923798d ago (Edited 3798d ago )

@Evil_Abed What's your point in all this? Just pissed the PS4 is doing well? Feel like arguing for the sake of arguing? Regardless of your opinion of the matter, PSN is having troubles no doubt due to the massive spike in activity. Whether you accept that or not is irrelevant.

rainslacker3798d ago

It's basically like a DOS attack on the servers, although it's with legitimate users. You'd be surprised how little it takes to take down any server. Usually much less than 1 million concurrent hits/downloads. Very few companies have the infrastructure to handle that load.

DeadlyFire3797d ago (Edited 3797d ago )

80 million PS plus users? Noooooo. 80 million PSN users yes/maybe. At most 5-10 Million could ever be concurrent online at the same time on average its much less than that, but I am giving a guesstimate of a max. I suspect 1-5 million of the 80 million users ever play online daily.

PS+ members are a fraction of the 80 million and not all users ever log on at the same time. PS4 requires + for online play so server status will spike as so many flood to get it. This often causes gridlock. It happens every single time. Every DRM game is a great example of this. They are unplayable for a week. Then things are fine.

Delive3797d ago

No one is taking into account that 80 million sold does not mean 80 million colsoles owned concurrently. Consoles died, were sold, stolen, upgraded, handed down or even swapped for a competitor.

mgeezy3133797d ago

Man, you really sound like you have it all figured out... You must have an awesome console that you released for your multi-billion dollar company. Congratulations on making a better network than PS4, know-it-all.

Salooh3798d ago

I bought Killzone SF, Battlefield 4 and AC black flag at the same time. It's like spending a fortune XD . It would be annoying like hell to download 100gb in ps3 but ps4 is another story :) .

MYDEATH213798d ago

I was saddened and i lmao this morning when I called every store within 60 mile radius trying to get a ps4, they were all sold out and almost every one of them told me they still had some xbones still available. Sony is killin it ;)

Angrymorgan3797d ago

Dude my situation is no better, got my ps4 yesterday, set it all up only to find that it has a power fault......my local game cant exchange it because they sold out so I have to wait untill next week to get my replacement from sony......its killing me, sitting here looking at it... £450 paper weight.

miDnIghtEr20C_SfF3797d ago

Oh is that the problem? Too many people buying a PS4? LMAO.. PSN sucks compared to Live, they couldn't handle their launch, and now players can't do stuff online.

Way to spin it though. Funny when everyone and their Mom bought a 360 that one Year, and Live was down here and there for some people and Xbox fans were pissed and yelling out that too many people bought Live and MS wasn't ready for it, that was a problem.

But when this happens to Sony it's not a problem for their fans. So we have Sony fans with no 360's saying it was a huge problem and unacceptable for Live to go down for some during Christmas one year when lot's of new people bought 360's,.. and now we have Sony fans who have bought PS4's and they're talking about how this is no problem and that too many people have bought a PS4.

Ha ha ha... You have to love it.

wooferine3797d ago

A large reason for the uproar when Xbox Live went down was because it is a paid service and extended over 2 weeks if I recall correctly. People do expect some issues during launch periods but only for a short period of time. Otherwise they get impatient.

dboyman3797d ago

I think this why Sony is now requiring PS plus for online play for PS4. They need the money for more servers, as well as improve PSN Infrastructure...

Makes sense while the network is under strain with so many new PS4 owners logging in,

Evil_Abed3798d ago

What about the 80 million users before? How was it able to handle them?

Utalkin2me3798d ago (Edited 3798d ago )

Dude you seriously are not going to let that "80 million " comment go are you. Do you think all 80,000,000 sign in at one time? You have 3 platforms to deal with hear now. Ps3/Ps4/Vita and they are all cross platform and most stuff carry over to each.

Orbilator3798d ago

yaaaaawwwwwwwnnnnnn.Really you need someone to explain ? 80 million users but not all put high demand on servers at same time. Psn is a crawl when psn store gets updated every week. Its all about demand

amiga-man3798d ago

Evil_Abed
What about the 80 million users before? How was it able to handle them?

I'm no expert on networks but it isn't rocket science to figure the new Playstation4 owners hammering the network is causing the problems, once they have their systems up and running things will settle down.

B1663r3798d ago (Edited 3798d ago )

Dude, PSN was never able to handle 80 million people. PSN goes down 2x a week from some error or another like clock work.

This is just confirming what we already knew... Sony's PSN is assy. Always has been, always will be. The difference is that now they have to pay for it...

The truth of the term PS3.5 continues unabated.

Evil_Abed3798d ago

Yeah PS4 does not have as many users as a single version of CoD has had on PS3 alone. Millions log on to psn during CoD launches, many times more than the current PS4 base. So I call BS on the new user excuse.
PSN is just an unstable network. Plain and Simple.

Utalkin2me3798d ago

@Evil_Abed

You do realize COD does not have dedicated servers right? Its a peer to peer system, so there is not near as much traffic on PSN playing COD as saying MAG or something that has dedicated servers.

Actually i really dont know what you're blabbing about considering the only thing wrong with PSN is not being able to redeem voucher codes? Is that such a big deal? Another person to add to ignore list.

LordMaim3798d ago

B1663r says "PSN goes down 2x a week from some error or another like clock work."

Spoken like someone who doesn't use PSN. That's just plain wrong. Its just launch woes, just like Xbox Live had for a few hours after their launch of the Xbox One.

Utalkin2me3798d ago

BTW, maybe you could stop making troll accounts. Could the mods purge the system sheesh.

Evil_Abed3798d ago

How is this a troll account? It is the same GGJ account, only I just changed the name.

CGI-Quality3798d ago (Edited 3798d ago )

Good thing you're out of bubbles because one gets tired of hearing utter nonsense. In fact, this topic seems to have attracted a lot of trolls. Haven't seen it this bad in a while.

OT: Anyway, I remember having slight issues the night of the North American launch. Was back up and fine the next morning. Wouldn't worry about it much.

Benchm4rk3797d ago

Not all 80 million people are connected to the PSN. Not all 80 million have internet at there house. Probably only half that 80 million go online to play.

timl2413797d ago

You're an IDIOT.

Let me break this down for you. The Xbox 360 and the PS3 sold roughly the same amount.

So far, the Xbox One and the PS4 have sold roughly the same amount.

As of right now, Xbox Live is not having any problems staying connected. And as of right now, a lot of people are having problems with PSN.

And do you know why? I'm gonna say something that is gonna get laughed at. But it's because of the cloud. 300,000 servers for the Xbox One. Do you know how many the PS4 has? Neither do I because they haven't announced it yet.

I'm happy I've payed for Xbox Live for the past 8 years. Microsoft paid us back with the 300,000 servers. I'll gladly pay for no lag.

Maybe Sony will smarten up next gen. Maybe.

Just remember, you get what you pay for.

caseh3798d ago (Edited 3798d ago )

Hah, I called this about 2-3 days back and got tons of disagrees! Suck it, SUCK IT!

I shouldn't be so happy though, as my PS4 is sat there and I can't do anything with it really. :)

* Keep the disagrees coming, if you really thought the PSN wouldn't go down considering the amount of people expected to hit the network at once you're either naïve or stupid, actually...both.

caseh3798d ago (Edited 3798d ago )

Well i'm in work tonight so its no big deal. PS4 came with Knack, selling that tomorrow and I was hoping to get my hands on the F2P games like Blacklight but expected the PSN network to be screwed on day one.

I didn't get a PS4 to play the usual suspects (COD/AC/FIFA etc).

Utalkin2me3798d ago (Edited 3798d ago )

@caseh

" PSN features such as log-in, online multi-player gaming, PlayStation Plus trial, PS Store (excluding voucher redemption), trophies, messages, friends etc. are all available.''"

So the only thing you can't do on PSN is voucher redemption and you called that and you're telling everyone to suck it? I don't think you actually read it and just jumped to conclusions.

caseh3798d ago (Edited 3798d ago )

Look at SniperControls post below:

'Got mine last night, PSN was working like a dream, from about 3pm onwards, nothing "PSN is undergoing maintenance" '

Clearly not available across the board is it.

And while you're at it, take a look at the first comment on the link. ta-daaa

Utalkin2me3798d ago (Edited 3798d ago )

Well ta daa mine has been perfect since after the day of launch. I would assume Uk have some issues just as the first 12 hours in the US. Its ok just go back to playing your games in 720p. And another person to add to ignore list.

caseh3798d ago

Well duh, this is affecting EU users hence the URL - blog.eu.playstation.com

Another person to add to the wtf you talking about list.

jerethdagryphon3797d ago

its not the number hitting the network at the same time its that same number hitting the network for exactly the same thing they ll want to activate ps+ dl the updates and such , its like the initial surge at the end of a sporting event everyone trys to go to the doors.

give it a bit of time and things will go back to normal , as for psn going down, ive rarely had it go down for any reason thats ot announced maintenance, and when it does its hours at most,

In other words everything is normal in PSN land...

Hicken3798d ago

Is this really happening? Are you really trolling this hard?

Let's see how long it takes for your comments to get marked, IF they get marked.

DOMination-3797d ago

My ps4 may as well be bricked. I enter my log in details, see "please wait" for five mins then go througg the set up only to wait another 5 mins for a message to tell me "communication error" then takes me back to the start where it doesn't even remember my email address and I have to type it in again.

IRetrouk3797d ago

I had that yesterday, i left it for an hour and tried again and it let me recover my profile, i think its pot luck at the min mate.

Bethesda Needs to Reduce the Gaps Between New Fallout and Elder Scrolls Releases

Waiting a decade for new instalments in franchises as massive as Fallout and Elder Scrolls feels like a waste.

Microsoft have Obsidian but I feel it's Bethesda who just don't want to play ball as they've always said they want to do it themselves.

Once MS bought Zenimax in 2020 they should have put the Outer Worlds 2 on the back burner, allow Bethesda to finish off its own Space RPG with Starfield (despite totally different tone why have two in your first party portfolio with two developers who's gameplay is a tad similar) and got Obsidian for one of their projects to make a spiritual successor to New Vegas.

When the Elder Scrolls VI is finished Bethesda can then onto the main numbered Fallout 5 themselves.

The Outer Worlds 2 started development in 2019 so putting it on the back burner wouldn't have been the end of the world, they'd have always come back to it once Fallout was done and it would have been nicely spaced out from Starfields release once they had most likely stopped supporting it and all the expansions were released.

If they did this back in 2020 when they bought Zenimax and the game had a good, steady 4 - 5 years development, you might have seen it release in 2025.

We are literally going to be waiting until 2030 at the very earliest for Fallout 5 and all they seem bothered about is pushing Fallout 76.

RaidenBlack8h ago(Edited 8h ago)

Its not just only Todd not playing ball.
Obsidian have made a name for themselves in delivering stellar RPGs, but most famous once have always been sequels/spin-offs to borrowed IPs like KOTOR 2, Neverwinter Nights 2, Fallout: New Vegas, Stick of Truth etc.
Obsidian wants to invest more in their own original IPs like Outer Worlds or Pillars of Eternity with Avowed.
Similar to what Bluepoint & inXile wants to do or Kojima is doing (i.e not involving anymore in Konami's IPs).
So yea, even if New Vegas has the most votes from 3D Fallout fans, Obsidian just wants to do their own thing, like any aspiring dev studio and MS is likely currently respecting that.
But a future Fallout game from Obsidian will surely happen. Founder Feargus Urquhart has already stated an year ago that they're eager to make a new Fallout game with Bethesda, New Vegas 2 or otherwise. Urquhart was the director of the very first 1995's Fallout game after all.
And don't forget Brian Fargo and his studio inXile, as Brian Fargo was the director of Fallout's 1988 predecessor: Wasteland

KyRo4h ago(Edited 4h ago)

Obsidian should take over the FO IP. They're do far better with it than Bethesda who hasn't made a great game for almost 15 years

Duke194h ago(Edited 4h ago)

I disagree. Part of these games is the support for the mod community. If they move to releasing a "next game" every 2 or 3 years, the modding support plummets and the franchises turn into just another run of the mill RPG.

Make the games good enough to withstand the test of time, to keep people coming back to them and expanding on them with mod support.

--Onilink--1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

I dont think anyone is saying they need to come out every 2 years (not to mention almost no game is released that quickly anymore)

By the time Fallout 5 comes out, it will be more than 15 years since Fallout 4 came out (same with ES6 coming out 15 years after Skyrim). Even if you want to use F76 as the metric for the most recent release, that one came out in 2018. It will be a miracle if F5 comes out before 2030

The point is that for a studio that doesnt seem to operate with multiple teams doing several projects at once, that their projects normally take 4-5 years as a minimum, and that now they even added Starfield to the rotation, it becomes a 15+ years waiting period between releases for each series, which doesnt make sense. Imagine that Nintendo only released a mainline Mario or Zelda game every 15 years…

They either need to start developing more than 1 project at a time, let someone else take a crack at one of the IPs or significantly reduce their development times

Duke1927m ago(Edited 24m ago)

Why should someone else take a crack at one of the IPs? Look at what happened to Final Fantasy as a recent example - there is pretty clear FF fatigue setting in because they are now pumping out titles in the franchise every few years. Pumping out more games faster doesn't always make a series better.

There are plenty of options to make new games, not just create more titles in the same universe at a faster pace.

mandf1h ago

Yeah I’m going to say it, who cares about the modding community when making a game? Half the time developers only tolerate modders because they fix there game for them.

Skuletor3h ago

Yeah, let's all advocate for smaller gaps between series' releases, then we'll probably get headlines about how the series have dropped in quality and they could have benefited from more time in the oven. Let them cook.

SimpleSlave2h ago

"how the series have dropped in quality and they could have benefited from more time in the oven" So every Bethesda game then? Got it.

Listen, I would agree if this was about From Software or something, but Bethesda?

🤣

C'mon now. What timeline are you from?

Skuletor21m ago

Think about it, they're already bug filled messes on their current schedule, can you imagine how much worse it would be if they rushed things?

Duke1926m ago

I mean you aren't wrong. People are going to complain about anything

isarai2h ago

Hows about you focus on quality, just a thought 🤷‍♂️

Sciurus_vulgaris1h ago

Bethesda [or Microsoft] would have to reallocate internal and external studios towards fallout and elder scrolls titles. Bethesda has the issue of developing 2 big IPs that are large RPGs on rotation. If you want more Fallout and Elder Scrolls, development will have to be outsourced.
