Modder Solders His Own Xbox One Headset Adapter

Third party headsets are unusable on the Xbox One until Microsoft releases an adapter, which won't be until next year. Your Trittons, your Turtle Beaches, your Astros and Afterglows, forget it. Except one audiophile, a guy with a soldering gun and a purpose, wouldn't let it go.

That's pretty freaking slick.

It's a shame it doesn't' have a 3.5mm jack on the controller though.

Only way to get 3rd party headsets/phones to work is by modding the controller.

wow

I dont even understand why MS chose to use 2.5mm jacks instead of 3.5mm jacks

FYI you don't mod the controller, you mod the MS proprietary headphone connector (the thing with the mute and volume controls).

Yout unscrew 5 screws and solder 4 cables to the board. It's really not that bad.

Although I do agree it's a shame they didn't go the PS4 route with chat and audio available via a 3.5mm jack in the controller.

Is it not obvious?

Step 1: Create Product With Obscure/Proprietary Inputs
Step 2: Create Market(Monopoly) on Input Products
Step 3: Profit

Or... it could be that a standard 3.5mm jack doesn't pass surround sound.

svoulis3795d ago

I agree Microsoft has done this with the 360 as well.

Proprietary HDD's (massively over priced)

Proprietary Wireless controllers (Only optional wireless was Rockband II equipment all other 3rd parties were NOT allowed to use wireless in their devices)

Those massively expensive memory cards 256mb for $29.99

It doesn't bother me much as I could easily do this mod, and I am sure in no time a company will release a more slick looking (not a cable hanging out) adapter. As well as Microsoft saying they are working on one too (probably massively overpriced)

I bought an Xbox One because unfortunately I can't play Ryse, Titanfall, Quantum Break on PS4 or PC (aside from Titanfall).

I am a gamer, but I can still see the wrong in the companies that own the hardware.

@ Wikkid

5.1+ surround sound passed into headphones doesn't actually matter that much. I figured this out after using a 5.1 headset for the past 4 years. The Tritton ax pros were legit with 4 speakers in each ear and a digital converter box with optical audio in.

Even so over time I realized some stereo headsets with 3.5mm connections sounded much better. I have realized any decent pair of stereo headphones is all you need (unless your a audiophile). It's all about the software pushing that audio.

For example, try this out with any regular stereo headphones..

I recently picked up a pair of SteelSeries Siberia V2 that sound much better IMO. They currently sell for $50 (pre-black friday sales. Usually sell for $75) as opposed to the Tritton ax pros that I paid $180 for, although that was 4 years ago. I think the ax pros have since been replaced by the "Pro+ 5.1" headset. It looks essentially the same with more product "flash."

Not to mention the V2s look like audio headphones, have a retractable mic, and use a 3.5mm connection. Perfect for Vita on the go or any other headphone use.

Also the bungee system that lets the headphones "free float" above your head makes the V2s one of the most comfortable headsets I have used.

But I digress. Way off topic here. :P

You do realize Apple's newest phone changed the charging connection so now you have to buy a new charging cable or an adapter to get your old one to work.

Eventually wireless headsets will come out so I don't see this being an issue. Stock X1 headset is much better than the ear bud PS4 you get.

Shows that they made the new connection just to make all old headsets useless. Increasing sales for TurtleBeach, Microsoft etc.

famoussasjohn3795d ago (Edited 3795d ago )

From what I've read, with the new connector, it allowed for more bandwidth to be transferred allowing better overall quality through the headset and also the speaker. The headset that comes with it actually does have a great overall sound.

I'm not huge on the technological spectrum of this type of stuff, but I do hate proprietary connections.

Do usb headsets still work? I have a Tritton 720+ that connected directly through the 360/ps3's optical ports and the headset itself connects through a reciever using usb.

creeping judas3794d ago

Yes I plugged in my Tritton over the weekend and worked. The only thing wont work is the chat, until they release the adapter.

Awesome, thanks for the confirmation
