Why is the PlayStation 4 more compact and lighter, and yet still has more power than the Xbox One

ItProportal spent a lot of time comparing the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in terms of hardware specs, software, and games, but one thing we haven’t discussed is the engineering side – the form and design of these consoles. Physically, the Xbox One and PS4 are very different consoles: While the Xbox is huge and boxy (aptly enough), the PS4 is much slimmer and lighter.

I'd have to slightly disagree. Personally, and at first site, I think both system's UIs were a bit uncomfortable for me to look at. I'm just not that big a fan of the tile style.

I think both can learn from each other in that regard. With that said, I do think the PS4's UI is all-around quicker and easier to navigate.

As for the hardware, it's obvious. Sony has been making exceptionally high quality hardware for many years. The only solid piece of hardware I've seen MS make was the first Xbox. And even then, that was only because it worked as designed. The box itself was ugly imo.

Also, UI wise, the Xbox One is basically an altered version of Windows 8. Now if you like that you probably also like hammering nails into your cheeks. It has features that look nice but pile on top of each other and make it feel disjointed (much like Windows 8). They have taken one of the worst facets of 8 (app integration) and included it here. It is bloody messy to look at and the snap function is the most pointless thing I have ever encountered on a console.

It is also useless with regards to voice commands. It does what you want maybe half the time. Although I was laughing trying to get it to do what I wanted it to do. I don't have a regional accent by the way. To many I would be considered to speak normal English.

I've spent about 4 hours with one now and Ryse is pretty but shallow and that is about the most positive thing I can say. I'm just glad it isn't mine.

Dead Rising is also the most pitiful excuse for a next gen game I have ever seen. Did Capcom Vancouver actually bother to play it before they released. It handles so badly. One of the most disappointing games I have played in a while. The only thing it has going for it is loads of zombies but it doesn't make much difference.

I'm going to get hate for the above but i'm just giving my opinion. Overall everything surrounding the user experience (the most important part of hardware) is an unnecessary faf.

From my personal experience with the Xbox one it is bad so far. Kinect is annoying and does not work without complete silence, YouTube constantly crashes, the YouTube app doesn't have a voice search option and the worst screen keyboard I have ever used, the ui is not intuitive as in its not. Set up in an easy to navigate way we had to look up how to get into settings, it's slow at streaming stuff especially YouTube, the install times are very slow.

However I did enjoy forza was not blown away by graphics though I think I was expecting too much from microsofts bullshit videos.

Edit, I do not know if it is better in the USA or not but so far it's been frustrating. Hopefully the ps4 is better.

It's basically Windows 8. Which is an awful UI, for a desktop at least. Works quite a bit better for the Xbox in my opinion.

Still I don't like the let's put shit randomly all over the place theme Microsoft has going on with Windows 8.

Likewise I don't like the auto arrange setup the PS4 has, and it's going to become unwieldy as soon as there are people with like 50 items on their bar. Hopefully that will evolve to allow pinning, maybe custom grouping as well.

Personally, everyone out there is struggling in my opinion as far as coming up with a "next generation" UI. When you look at things like Windows 8, Ubuntu, Mac OS, OS7, all of them have their faults and none of them have ever been perfect. Some are outright awful.

I think the UI of the Xbox One resembles way too much that of Windows 8.

One thing I do like about the Xbox One is the second window for apps that can appear in the right corner, but that's pretty much it.

Everything else, I prefer the PS4 since it's much faster, easier to access, unique and it's built for gaming.

It doesn't matter. They hire the best in the business available to them to handle all sides. It was just design choices. I don't think the size of the X1 is so huge it is a problem.

But I will say I was surprised at just how small and light my PS4 was when I opened it up and found out there was not even a power-brick involved.

I knew the new consoles were basically modified gaming laptops but it never sunk in until I opened my PS4 and held it in my hands.

Not so sure about that. Sony is not known for their processors, Ram, graphicscards and so on. They produce cameras, TVs Smartphones. You can say, they might be better in putting stuff together.

I am actually really interested to see, which one will come out as the winner in a year from now, cuz I am planning to get one of these to add to my current plattforms, Wii U and gamer PC.

I couldnt care less about graphics, all I want is a good system, one that runs without many hiccups und maybe it will be a good Smartdevice for the TV, I mean, what can be better, than a Smart TV box? Its not as simple as that... Saying that MS are a Software company is just lazy... MS have enough money to hire the best hardware designers in the world and make something to rival the PS4 design.

Also MS's machine is built from off the shelf parts wile the PS4's hardware is custom designed for the unit, so of course the hardware is going to be more sleek and streamlined.

It's like comparing a Mac to a PC. Only except while the Mac is sleeker and better built, the PC is 'cheaper' because it uses off the shelf parts and also more customizable.

Which really doesn't say much for the Xbox One's higher price.

The only issue I have with the PS UI is that when a specific even occurs (like a message or someone signing in) and you press the PS button, it doesn't have the option to go directly to that event.

The only thing I liked about my xbox was when someone sent me a message, I pressed the xbox button and it went directly to the message if I caught the popup in time. I wish PS4 would impliment that.

On a side note guys, I had to call Sony to day to send my system out for repair (extremely sad but the ethernet port stopped working for me) but the rep stated that not only is MP3 support coming, but also bluetooth headset compatibility as well. THANK GOD! I want to use my PS5 headset with the PS4.

Slick smooth design doesn't offset being a gas guzzler, fuel efficient design does.

Besides, "American muscle" is one segment of the car market. It doesn't encompass every design of every car we make. Furthermore, American muscle is about big power; that doesn't fit with the XB1, who actually lags behind the PS4 in power.

American automakers are also wholly capable of slick smooth design, as evident with the Corvette over its lifetime, and the most recent Viper, in particular. And both of these are gas guzzling American muscle wielding enormous power in rather efficient housings.

Essentially, what you're doing is comparing the muscle cars of America's past with the tiny, fuel-sipping cars of Japan without context. And I don't think there's a car enthusiast out there that believes the Nissan Cube or some similar vehicle could hold a candle, performance-wise, to any successful muscle car(cuz, obviously, some of them were garbage; the same for Japan's small vehicles).

And if you ARE making this comparison, then the muscle car, purpose built for speed, far outstrips those Japanese compacts, which rarely even reach 100mph, and don't do so with any sort of urgency.

The analogy then falls apart because the PS4 is more like American muscle than the XB1 is. It just so happens that the XB1 has the SIZE of American muscle, but has NONE of the performance.

I won't be buying either console though, when Valve releases the steam os, consoles like x1 and ps4 will be obsolete. There's always room for a truly dedicated gaming machine like the wiiu though (the ps4 fails in that regard too).

I like the look and concept of the steambox. But I think between price and having a bunch of steamboxes (because any company can make one). It will be to confusing and not enough of a brand recognition to really take a chunk out of console gamers. I think it will get pc gamers support, and some of the console gamers, but not enough to make the xbox one and ps4 obsolete.

Consoles are trying to become more and more like pc's, why bother when we already have pc's? I'm not naive, I know why Sony and Microsoft do it, but as a consumer there is little point in bothering, my pc is a better gaming machine and a better multimedia device than a console could ever be.

I will miss the console exclusives for sure, but the pc has enough of it's own exclusives, ones that I prefer.

We don't know what the hardware failure rate is going to be on these yet.

MS has a larger box and a separate power brick but if they have 25 percent less failures than PS4 over the life of the device then it will mean less money wasted on returns and repairs.

MS took a bath on the RROD last generation and probably don't want to do it again.

Everything about the Xbox One is designed for profitability which has not yet been achieved in Microsoft's Xbox division.

If you haven't see the PS4 teardown video, I suggest you watch it. PS4 is so well put together that you only see one or two wires in the entire system. Everything basically clicks together to make one coherent piece. It's amazing, the engineering they did with this console.

Microsoft went with a more PC like architecture. That was probably, like the article says, designed around their fear of the red light happening all over again.

Still pretty amazing, the power of each of these consoles pack in such a small space. It's what kept the PC out of so many living rooms for so many years. The pure size of it. Now they're coming down in size and you're seeing them in more and more homes audio and video racks.

The problem is we cant judge games looking better because that is opinion , but we can use facts to prove the ps4 has more power just by looking at multiplats, less jaggies by miles , better resolution, and holds frames better, those are the things that can be used to show which console the more powerful hardware because they are factual, saying "the ps4 is weaker or the same power because i think ryse looks better" isnt a fact its an opinion.

It has been proven again and again that the ps4 can just do more in games than the xbone you need to just get over it and play your games, you might have a less stress filled life.

Many people obviously have developed rather, in my mind, pseudo-artistic tastes, originally prised from the dead hands of early 90s minimalism and, later, boring mobile phone design, as to what constitutes good design. For me, the Xbox One branding, user interface, even choice of opening line up genre of games, speaks more of 'good design'. The console itself is not a huge size and it has a rather reassuring, sturdy, industrial look to it.
The PS4's slanted look is nice in its own right and yet it also smacks a little bit of trying too hard to appear futuristic.

i agree. As a designer/architect I have to say the the xboxone is a more premium looking machine. PS4 looks like a stripped down slim model of a PS4 that never existed. The materials look cheap but the physical design is ok and the light bar is very nice. I wish they had put a little more effort into the materials/finish. Having said all that I will still buy one after xmas since at the end of the day you don't play the physical appearance of the box.

A transistor is simply a semi conductor sendng electrical signals through hardware...it could have 200000000000 transistors...would NOT impact games or performance speeds. Transistors count just gets larger as we need more power (as in ELECTRICITY) to power more efficient hardware. Microsoft is not a hardware company. They keep making loud croakings about becoming one but they keep constantly failing. They have f'd up their XBO APU with this bottleneck eSRAM. The XBO looks like a box from the last millennium. The parts are bargain bin electronics and they obviously got every part from a lowest bidder. They made the hard drive a factory service requirement and put in a warranty void location. It has a last generation GPU, not a current generation like the PS4, the triple OS is causing dev nightmares, and these top "elite" MS designers somehow spent years designing a low end home theater PC trying to be a game console as a secondary function. Only things I like my Xbox One over my PS4 are the UI, I find the PS4's to be rather boring and the fact that the Xbox One has 5 ghz WiFi unlike the PS4's only 2.4 ghz. Other than that I prefer the controller, look, and native 1080p
