Today in History: November 21st, 1995: Wipeout Glides onto Playstation One Showing Off 3D Gaming

Triverse writes, "When Sony launched the Playstation One (back when it was simply Playstation) they had a hell of a challenge ahead of them. Sega was coming off of a series of failed add-ons for their first succesful console, the Sega Genesis, and Nintendo was touting "SGI this" and "SGI that" where ever they could. Sony was the underdog to say the least in this trio, they were the second to launch thanks to Sega making a HUGE mistake in launching the Saturn six months early without telling anyone- um, Sega, it is called marketing- you did it so well in the later years of the Genesis, what the hell happened?"

Playstation One? no it's just Playstation or PSX or PS1. Do you call it Playstation Two? No you do not. Yes, they eventually brought out the slim version and called it PSOne but no one uses that name.

I wish i was there to see how angry you was when the third Xbox was named Xbox One

That's all you took away from this? the referencing of the "name"...?

I'd ask if it really mattered seeing as pretty much anyone can tell what the article was about but you might get upset at that too.

On topic, i just recently got the original long box edition of this game. had it years ago and traded it away but i was on a retro byuing kick and was looking for the original releases from the old playstation (one) days.

Really fun game still to this day. And it works great with the namco negcon.

I had this game early on, it was just so different and as I mentioned in the article, Sega was left with nothing really comparable to show. Daytona USA was simply not in the same league.

I would really like a new Wipeout for PS4 but didn't the company that made wipeout close down? I can't remember.

triverse3805d ago

Sony bought Psygnosis (makers of Wipeout) and eventually closed the studio and moved assets internally (personnel, properties, etc).

Sad really.

imo, wipeout took the futuristic racer batton from f-zero and ran with it into another dimension.
it culminated with the creatively fervent 2097. that was for me the perfection of wipeouts vision. the later versions played with new modes and tracks but the series hasn't really blown me away since back then in the 90's.

KONG22925d ago

Amazing poster and one of the best racing franchises in the games industry - Period
No game give you the speed and rush like WipEout and the music is a key component to the game
Must make lots more WipEout's

RedDevils924d ago

I love trance and wipeout has one of the best tracks in it.

dbcoops925d ago

Sony been getting that fake outrage since '94. lol.

Inverno924d ago

mourne for that late 90s and 00s swag. All the cool stuff never known by dumb child me, curses!

PCgamer98924d ago

This is pretty tame actually when compared to other posters in the 90s/00s.

I agree absolutely with Ridge Racer, but would prefer what Namco did with Ridge Racers on the PSP. Basically pull Ridge Racer 1-5 together, make it all about drifting and create new tracks with the same oldskool Arcade Feel. Wipeout however? Redout and Ballistic NG replaced it for me. I miss Rock N Roll Racing in this list

darthv721162d ago

RR 6 & 7 were both good on the 7th gen but it is surprising there wasnt an 8th gen RR8. Ace Combat got a release on 8th gen but not RR of all things (unless you count the stripped down vita version).

I'd love to see the return of PGR and Tokyo Extreme Racer.

Terry_B1162d ago

Yeah..PGR was awesome...RIP Bizarre Creations

CYALTR1162d ago

I would love to see Rockstar put another Midnight Club out. I remember that game fondly, the customization was top notch at the time. It had a nice arcady feel to the driving, but looking at the cars was the main point.

Wreckfest is solid and a good alternative to Destruction Derby.

Gardenia1162d ago

It's a good game, but nothing like Destruction Derby.
