Metacritic: PS4 Wins Against Xbox One Thanks to High Quality Indie, Microsoft Wins on AAA Exclusives

The Xbox One finally releases at midnight, and the review embargo on most launch games for both Microsoft's new console and the PS4 is no more. It's time to do some math and see who, between the two first parties battling for next generation supremacy, got the best results on what ultimately matters the most: the games.

Almost as interesting as Xbox One's most hyped exclusive, Ryse, getting 4's and 5's out of 10.

A year from now, or even months from now, when Sony's bigger AAA games start pouring out to no end, this launch will be long forgotten.

Naughty Dog (Uncharted already announced, what's next? The Last of Us 2? Savage Starlight?), Sony Santa Monica (2-3 projects already), Sony Bend (action/adventure title), Media Molecule (who knows), Ready At Dawn (The Order), Quantic Dream (2 new IPs), and others, are still waiting to show their guns.

VGAs almost here. The first glimpse into the PS4 future is upon us.

PS4 is more powerful and able to achieve the 1080p benchmark more often than X1. Also Multiplats are going PS4's way as well.

As far as AAA titles, Sony has not even pulled out the Big Dogs yet and I don't hear a soul saying how much better MS' launch exclusives are anymore. That was just as we all thought, the MS hype train.

I had high hopes for Ryse. We have all had high hopes for the exclusive launch games on all our respective consoles of choice. I don't think it sets a precedent that we were let down in some cases.

I'm still happy as a clam, today! Nothing can shake my excitement :) This generation is going to kick ass! And, for once, I wont miss out on any of the exclusives.

Sony obviously has amazing games on the way. Microsoft obviously has amazing games on the way. Everyone will be happy at the end of the day, mark my words!

What AAA titles?
I don't see any exclusive game (indie or retail) getting an averaging rating over 9 / 90. Not even a single multiplat on either console rated that high.

Okay my bad. I just took a quick glance at metacritic. Flower received a 92. Never played it. But every other titles overall rating is below a 9 / 90 average. I think it's safe to say we are going to have to wait a bit for AAA titles. Unless of course we are changing the definition for this generation.

Look at PS1,2,3 history of games to understand.

When i bought my PS4 in full in June i knew that my PS4 will still get AAA games 7 years later like it was the case with PS1,2,3.

if the GT7 rumors are true (next year release), one console and one game will not be shat on quicker and harder than what the ps4 and gt7 is about to drop on forza and xbox1. in the mean time, ps4 will sell like crack in Baltimore with its exclusives, superior hardware, indies, many PC games making the jump, non-subscription free games, "free" PSplus games and cheaper price point. It will also have Insomniac's Sunset Overdrive and Remedy's Quantum Break further down the line.

Either side can claim the better games. Unfortunately, the only objective way to judge is to take a collection of subjective opinions, average them together and see what the result is. I agree with you about scores being eliminated, but implying Metacritic is only used by grandmas to pick out a gift, well… that's just empty sarcasm. Grandmas are hardly the target audience of that site and I'd bet any amount of money that they aren't the most frequent users there.

The subjective nature of reviews isn't the issue, and neither is comparing two mostly dissimilar games. The issue is that some people want to define "games" as AAA only, which is completely ridiculous. Any old school gamer will say that these smaller titles are very reminiscent of the early days of gaming. Asteroids was a game then, and Super Stardust is a game now. I saw someone compare Resogun to Defender. They're all games, and anyone who says otherwise has an agenda.

Conclusion:-

Xbox One clearly has won the launch. Even though next gen games have been average and some medicore. Xbox One has a larger variety of launch games to play exclusives to its console. PS4 launch was extremely weak and limited amount of choice with the delay of Drive Club only lead to two launch games available and both poorly received. However PS4 faired better in downloadable games with Resogun and port of the great and memorizing flower game compared to lacklustre Lococycle and Crimson Dragon.

A worthy note is at the moment third party games have taken the limelight. You have Battlefield 4,AC4, NFS Rivals to play and have scored well and better then launch exclusives. Not forgetting the outstanding Super Mario 3D World for the Wii U is the best game at the moment.

Xbox One has more games at the moment PS4 has no games. With Titan Fall, Halo, Quantum Break , Project Spark in the horizon compared to only Infamous second son. PS4 could easily be known and be labelled as a "no games system" as Uncharted might be a long time till we see it. Perhaps 2015?

What is wrong with indies? Gamers always complain about how X doesn't innovate and games are stagnate. Indies are the complete opposite to that. The always innovate and try new things otherwise they fail. They are cheap and sometimes do not last as long as a full retail release but they are priced accordingly.

Give it 6-8 months. The launch of the PS4 and XBO will be a distant memory.
I'm not getting a PS4 at launch, because I'm waiting until the really good stuff comes out. KZSF and stuff look pretty cool, but for me personally, it's not enough to get a console at launch (not getting the XBO). I'll be getting a PS4 next year, guaranteed.

In some opinions MS has the better AAA launch lineup for Xbox One, but you have to take in account that Sony is still supporting 3 devices. Just look at the total number of exclusives Sony has released this year and compare that to what MS has. Why in Lord's name do they both need patches at Day One and how hard is it going to screw consumers who haven't done their research? Why the hell Sony wasn't smart enough to have a 3-5% over stock to make up for the failure rate at release? Why should launch titles even have DLC in the first place when they are what's going to make or break sales at release?

I know a lot of people are going to say that online should be the new norm by now but there are other gamers who just cant afford due to location and other factors so it's our job as a gaming community to look out for the little guys instead of having elitism.

Maybe I am getting too old for gaming now-a-days.......

Day 1 patch for PS is optional you could still play games without it. You just couldn't access some apps that's all.

I feel as though reviewers have been rather harsh for both sides. There are certain games I feel deserve a much better score for both systems (granted I haven't played Xbox 1). I think the huge expectations of games to be next gen perfection have been causing some lower scores on otherwise great games!
