Polygon Caught Lying About PS4 on Their Xbox One Stream

Jeremy Conrad writes: This morning, gaming site Polygon is doing a twelve-hour live stream showing off the Xbox One. Right before the comical demo of Dead Rising 3, where most of the voice commands didn’t seem to work and they couldn’t even snap Internet Explorer correctly, a panel of editors discussed the system that the site seems to be carrying so much water for. During this panel, site Editor-in-Chief Chris Grant stated a couple times that one advantage the Xbox One has over the PS4 is that the Xbox One supports remote controls and the PS4 does not. He even used the example that grandma would want to use the Xbox One over the PS4 because she wouldn’t want to use the Dual Shock 4 to watch a movie. Later, he used the example of Netflix on how the Xbox One is a superior choice over the PS4 for Netflix because of remote support. The problem with these statements is that they are lies.

Polygon is biased?

I would never have guessed! /s

For "professionals", many people in this industry can be extremely petty. I expect it amongst the general gaming population....but not industry professionals.

Never cared for Polygon anyway.......Now i will actively avoid them.

-Foxtrot3806d ago (Edited 3806d ago )

So despite the problems...they give it an 8 while the PS4 got a 7.5

Hmmmmmmm

I'm sorry but I wish some higher ups in the games industry would call them out. This is ridiculous.

Hell they even blocked the guy for pointing this out lol

xHeavYx3806d ago

Lies! Polygon is the most unbiased website ever, they never got almost $1M from MS... /s

blitz06233806d ago

Wow he blocked Jeremy. How unprofessional can you get?

ZodTheRipper3806d ago

After seeing HipHopGamer being banned it hurts my soul seeing Polygon and Adam Sessler articles on this site ...does N4G really need more proof that these guys are the worst examples of gaming journalism that's out there right now? I mean even Kotaku is acceptable compared to them.

SpringHeeledJack3806d ago

If HHG can get banned from this site then so should polygon with their lies and trolling. If the mods are truly unbiased on here then polygon will be banned from n4g after this.

JhawkFootball063806d ago (Edited 3806d ago )

@Foxtrot

Wait so since they rated the Xbox One higher, you are wanting higher ups in the game industry to call them out as frauds? I hate fanboyism but is it seriously getting to this degree??

Kryptix3806d ago

I have said it since many months now, why can people still post Polygon articles on N4G when they are heavily biased to the point where they spread misinformation?

Polygon are the cancer of gaming journalism. I mean, we all have our preferences but that site only has a bunch of people with only one preference when it should be almost even on both sides. They know where they stand, as a bunch of shills, disagreeing with an unfair review or false statement gets you banned there.

scott1823806d ago

@JhawkFootball06

It's not because it got rated higher at all, that is not what this is about. They lied about the remote control not working on it! Are you seriously defending them? This has nothing to do with fanboyism and everything to do with giving consumers false knowledge about a piece of hardware.

Statix3806d ago (Edited 3806d ago )

I really am surprised that journalists from other more "reputable" gaming sites (I use that term loosely), like Gamespot, IGN, or Giantbomb, never call Polygon out for their blatant bias and conflicts of interest. Are they all part of a media pact to not insult each other, or what?

After Jeff Gerstmann got fired because an advertiser got mad at him, you would think he'd be the first guy in line to lambaste Polygon and their shill antics.

badboy7763806d ago

Let's Ban Polygon from N4G!!!

abc12333806d ago

@JhawkFootball06: I'm guessing they were separate points. The amount of questionable activity from Polygon has been endless, especially with Gies.

ziggurcat3806d ago

@ jhawk:

"@Foxtrot

Wait so since they rated the Xbox One higher, you are wanting higher ups in the game industry to call them out as frauds?"

polygon repeatedly rates anything sony lower than anything MS-related. it's because MS lines their pockets.

-Foxtrot3806d ago (Edited 3806d ago )

@JhawkFootball06

Fanboyism...it's not about fanboyism, it's about right and wrong.

They lied in their live stream when they tried to make it look like the Xbox One had one over the PS4 when it didn't and despite the problems it's having on the live stream they gave it a better score. Sorry but I wouldn't really give that an 8.

It's not about being a fanboy, yeah I prefer the PS4...AT THE MINUTE because Sony actually give a crap about the core community and gamers in general. What Microsoft this gen has shown us is once they have your money the support will be minimum because they will get to save as much money as they can.

Oh and when I said I wanted them called out...it was for their bad journalism in general and how unprofessional they are. The guy got blocked for pointing something out

DragonKnight3806d ago

Guys, HHG didn't get banned for flamebait articles/titles or for being a fanboy. He was banned for plagiarism.

Polygon, much like Kotaku, is here to stay. Mods will say that these sites get more upvotes than downvotes, but one already said that Kotaku has had a massive number of downvotes, dwarfing all upvotes, and still isn't gone.

The upvote/downvote system on N4G for sites doesn't work. It's either incorrectly implemented, or completely ignored. Unfortunately, as long as people keep submitting stories from these worthless sites, we'll always see them here.

blackbeld3806d ago (Edited 3806d ago )

N4G should ban Polygon for infinity!

Bias journalism should not be allowed. They are a bunch of freaking fanboys that calls themselves journalist.

Ban them!

Kryptix3806d ago

@Foxtrot

That's what bothers me the most, when Jeremy got called a "weird dude" for pointing out a false statement they made and he even linked the video shown in the article as proof.

http://furiousfanboys.com/w...

The best thing that could of been done is admit that they were wrong in the Twitter post. Instead he banned Jeremy like the truth hurts, that's bad journalism right there. And they call themselves professional...

its_JEFF3806d ago

I think it's pretty sad, as an industry, that most of the professional "journalist" aren't very professional. A lot of them don't even adhere to journalistic practices.

It's honestly really hard to find an unbiased gaming centric site these days. That being said, I've always found GiantBomb to be one of the most unbiased sites out there.

NarooN3806d ago

So who's down to ban Polygon from N4G? The site is literally full of shills, they make it blatantly obvious and have no shame about it. They're literally worse than Kotaku.

It's interesting how people point out HHG -- HHG may have had sensationalist titles, but he wasn't nearly as bad as Polygon.

solidjun53806d ago

@its_JEFF

I really like GiantBomb. I just find them on point.

As for Polygon, I think they just want hits. Just don't give it them. I know it's hard, but I just don't read their stuff. I go to Giantbomb. I'm sure Hankmoody will say Polygon has integrity.

morganfell3806d ago

Polygon are not staffed by professionals. They are not journalists but rather reporters. The chasm that lies between those two endeavors is as wide as the sea.

abzdine3806d ago

let's ban them bit***s !!!!

ProjectVulcan3806d ago (Edited 3806d ago )

COD Ghosts has TOO MANY FRAMES on PS4. Deduct 0.5 from review!

Killzone Shadow fall has awesome grafix, but is same old

5/10

Forza 5 has decent grafix, is same old and less content

9/10

Polygon, oooohhhhhhhh yeaaaaaaaa.

gaffyh3806d ago (Edited 3806d ago )

To be fair, most of the Polygon employees are complete idiots. So I can see them not understanding how a remote control works. Also, they must really be stupid if they think Sony won't release a PS4 remote at some point, they did it for PS2 and PS3, why would they stop now.

Their entire stream was quite biased, you could tell from the tone of their talking on the PS4 stream (they went into it expecting to hate it), and with the Xbone stream, they were EXTREMELY forgiving. To the point where they said something along the lines of:

"Kinect voice commands didn't work well for me, but when they worked, they worked really well, so it must have been my room or something."

What the shit...

maddskull3806d ago

see the reviews they gave killzone 5 and most xbox games are higher than 7 and they gave forza a 9 which they dont deserve

user55757083806d ago

no idea who polygon is but i will make a point to not trust them

tiffac0083806d ago

Welcome to the new age of gaming media where they no longer check for facts.

Enemy3806d ago (Edited 3806d ago )

And they're still getting money from Microsoft. That 750k was just to get the site going. This isn't the first time Microsoft gets their own slaves caught, paying random no-name websites to fabricate utter bullsh*t about PS4.

rainslacker3806d ago

@Gaffy

Just an FYI. Sony is already releasing a blu-ray remote on 1/31/14. I'd imagine it will work for all the streaming apps like the PS3 remote did.

http://www.gamestop.com/ps4...

badz1493806d ago

yeah...it's just Polygon being Polygon!

UNPROFESSIONAL AND STUPID! so...what's new?

pixelsword3806d ago (Edited 3806d ago )

My blog doesn't sound so stupid now, eh? Find the liars, find the lies...

This is just the continuation of what's been going on in one form or another by professionals and fanboys alike.

@DragonKnight:

What did HHG plagiarize? I'll need proof on that one. If I'm not mistaken, a LOT of sites were ripping off Tor Davis, and none of them were banned, and Tor Davis could tell you that himself.

FamilyGuy3806d ago

Polygon has been down voted to hell on here yet the mods allow it to still have its articles and reviews posted because they think of it as a big enough site to be above the democratic voting system.
It annoys me because they are BLATANTLY in MSs pocket, they show more bias then some Xbox-focused site. All they're doing is weighing the game journalist industry down.

minimur123806d ago (Edited 3806d ago )

To be honest I didn't know until this video showed up, it's kindof a 'backdoor' way into controlling the PS4 with a remote, so I believe them saying that it doesn't support remote control [NATIVELY]

Also, can you controll blue ray/dvd playback with the remote? (pause/start/ff/rw)

kerrak3806d ago

Not sure which one is better Lolygon or Poliesgon

NoLongerHereCBA3806d ago (Edited 3806d ago )

Why some people here get so many likes is beyond me.

@ vulcanproject. I'm not a racing fan; but comparing Forza Motorsport 5 to Killzone Shadowfall is really strange. Furthermore saying that FM5 didn't improve in anything besides the graphics just shows how biased and unrealistic you are as well as other people here.

I'm not saying that KZSF is a bad game, because I would love to play it if I had a PS4 even if it was just for the graphics alone and to see what some of my friends have been working on.

But FM5 is using the cloud (yes I dare say it) for things like AI, which is completely new. Whereas I read that the AI in KZSF is sometimes really dull. I would still rather play KZSF than FM5 though, since I prefer FPS games over driving games even if it received a lower score.

But as I said; it's difficult to compare them, since KZSF is being negatively graded due to the story etc, which is non-existent in this racing game.

Just enjoy the games you play and don't put so much faith in online reviews. If you want a game buy it and judge for yourself.

ProjectVulcan3805d ago

VaizardNL

I hope you realise that polygon's marking system is blatantly flawed if they believe KZ is a 5 and Forza 5 is a 9, based on what they said in both review.

Forza 5 is a nice title, but its NOT, NOT a step change from Forza 4 by any means, and is marked lower by most sites because it lacks so much content it feels like half a game.

Secondly the one thing you pick out as new, the cloud AI, has come under fire by multiple reviews.

Many reviewers felt it actually detracts from the game, because the AI they were racing were racing like idiots. They were racing like you would online, over aggressive and making lots of stupid mistakes causing silly accidents.

If Turn 10 intended to create the hallmarks of poor online racing for offline races, then they did it and the AI is irritating. Irritating or dumb, take it as you will.

There is no way Polygon justified Forza 5 getting a 9 in their review if you read back the Shadow fall one, and concentrate on their criticisms

Shill site gotta shill.

To be fair, it can be narrowed down to just Gies. But that whole live stream there was some serious FUD spreading without any shame.

iDadio3806d ago

Some will sadly believe the FUD to, their opinion should hold no weight to anyone personally and they should be taken off meta

EXVirtual3806d ago (Edited 3806d ago )

Polygon got 750k from MS. They'll lie about anything.
They give crappy scores to games on Playstation as well. Even though the PS4's CODG stutter issue was because the PS4 was exceeding 60fps, Polygon won't make an update to their review.
A lot of gaming journalists do what they do because they get money. Why do you think IGN gives COD 9's (8.8 for COD Ghosts) every year?

@-Foxtrot, fair enough.

-Foxtrot3806d ago

True

But they only do it when a Sony game threaterns a game which is made by MS coming out in the same month

Take State of Decay and The Last of Us...they both came out the same month

However

Beyond Two Souls got a solid 8...but nothing from MS was coming out in October.

It only happens when it NEEDS to happen as I've noticed.

N2NOther3806d ago

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say they gave that score because they liked it. I would give every COD outside of Ghosts anywhere between a 9 (Black Ops, WAW, COD 3, MW3) and 10 (Call of Duty 4, MW2, COD 2, Black Ops 2) and I don't get paid to do so. Weird, huh?

NoLongerHereCBA3806d ago (Edited 3806d ago )

A stutter that seems like a framedrop is still a stutter. Doesn't matter whether it is due to more FPS or less. If it makes a game less playable, it should be counted as such.

Not updating the review depends on whether the patch came before the release of the console and game or after. Games rarely to never get updated depending on patches after release. Don't expect people to alter reviews simply because it makes you feel better.

If the patch came pre-release, then I would expect them to update it. But I don't know if that was/is the case.

BABY-JEDI3806d ago

I'm actually seeing Polygon as being intentionally more critical towards Sony while showing adverts for the XB1. As for KZ review. The reviewer had already went on the record as not liking the series. This is clearly not impartial & unprofessional.

CryofSilence3806d ago

No one takes them seriously anyway. Even fanboys should be cautious about what they say because they will deceive you too.

Veneno3806d ago

You're wrong about that. They are on Metacritic and they have a large community that listens to what they say. People do take them seriously. and that's why this is a problem.

CryofSilence3806d ago

Correct. Addendum: No one should take them seriously.

Sevir3806d ago

They got a a start up fund from MS, so they pander to them more, the guys over there aren't a great bunch of journalists! In fact calling them journalists is false, they are just writers who biasly troll the industry we love and support, I'm glad Shu ripped one of the editors there a new one with the troll review of "The Last Of Us" they personally shouldn't be able to score interviews abd such since most of their stuff is either false or blatantly biased.

OlgerO3806d ago

Why does polygon still have credibility at all ( metacritic for example ) they have proven to be a biased unprofessional site.

AgitatedOcelot3806d ago

Calling another member of the media who is also a former IGN editor, a "creep" and blocking him on twitter for calling you out for false information is about as unprofessional as it gets.

Like parent company needs to start firing level unprofessional.

shammgod3806d ago

pivotplease3806d ago

I always preferred ps3 netflix to 360 and pc netflix, so I'm not sure where these multimedia arguments spring from. PS3 and PSP ended up having ridiculous media capabilities after a few updates, and I expect PS4 to go in the same direction.

kneon3806d ago

And that might be why PS3 is the top platform for NetFlix.

pivotplease3806d ago

Is it? I think that makes sense considering all the people I know who run netflix on their ps3. Anyone notice the new update of the user interface? I'm wishing there was a way to change the settings because the picture in the top half makes it so you can only see half the selection you previously could.

Matter of fact what the hell is goin on this year? First Adam Orth's #DealWithIt and now Chris Grant's calling people creeps?

Gaming journalism is is becoming a joke and we as gamers fanboy or no fanboy need to take control of this.

mrpsychoticstalker3806d ago

GarrusVakarian3806d ago (Edited 3806d ago )

We don't have to "find" anything bad about it, it comes in a steady stream, have you not been paying attention this past year?

hqgamez3806d ago

Honestly. Where in the world did this site even come from. I've been using n4g since 2011, but its not until this year I see news from polygon. They got a nice site, but they are trash bias fox news people to me.

Am_Ryder3806d ago

It's founded by a bunch of professionals from other sites- the founder of Kotaku Brian Crescente is one of them. So it IS a very new site indeed.

And I agree with your analysis- I love their site physically, it's really stylish and well thought out and intuitive and they do ingenious things with the layout. It's a very, very modern magazine format.

The problem is, all of the money and true talent they have seems to go into the design and web hosting area. The actual writing there is okay, and the reportage is okay, but the criticism is just... Disgustingly bad. So often off the mark and misinterpreting certain things. I try to veer away from saying sites are biased- but they definitely need to check their shit in this case!

kparks3806d ago

U guys just figured this out didn't they give TLOU a like 5 outta 10 or something stupid? There credibility has been garbage!

showtimefolks3806d ago

the way i look at it there are some gaming sites and some reviewers who i just don't trust

I know gametrailers is owned by the parent company that is owned by MS yet they are still very fair IMO

gamespot since the whole jeff firing/kane and lynch stuff has been spot on, they will point out very minor things in their reviews and are really strict but sometimes you need to find out everything and gamespot is the place

ign has few reviewers who i like on playstation team

but one thing i have noticed is how american gaming media gives MS a free pass but not to sony or nintendo, its funny and sad how MS gave up on core gamers for last 3-4 years but still got praised and some of their E3 conferences were graded higher than sony when sony showed games compared to dance central

angryjoe is also really fair

kenshiro1003806d ago

Its really disgusting to see how fanboyism gets in the way of being a true gamer these days. It's one thing to like a console, but to turn around and produce lies just to downplay the other is just pathetic.

Gamer19823806d ago

That feature of controlling with remote was on PS3 I use my Panasonic TV remote to control my PS3.

Volkama3806d ago (Edited 3806d ago )

Article is not really false. PS4 doesn't do voice controls for Netflix unless you buy an optional extra (the camera).

No, grandma wont be watching Netflix wearing that earbud it comes with.

The number of righteous fanboys reacting to this non-story is hilarious. Sadly I'm probably too late to achieve the 100+ disagrees other rational folk have been given.

They are Meta cheaters for sure.

Am_Ryder3806d ago

I do some freelance writing too- and I'd love to see what you come up with.

However, I'm pretty sure that Metacritic will take sites on board on a set of criteria, e.g. "are they an accredited site?"

Which Polygon will be- they obviously have the money to get professionally accredited and recorded as a private sector organisation.

"Do they have a high enough readership?"

Which they do- i'm pretty sure Polygon gets hundreds of thousands of views a day.

Etc. etc. I reckon Polygon are totally legit enough to get on Metacritic. Their quality is just so shit in comparison to most of the industry.

zpoc3806d ago

well, they're an offshoot of the verge, which was probably on metacritic before the bulk of their gaming news was moved to polygon. polygon also has a number of veteran game journalists which gives them some clout.

not trying to defend them, or anything - i find their game coverage pretty weak, in general.

How to recruit Lam in Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes

Lam is among the 120 characters available for recruitment in Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes. While she is one of the many straightforward recruits, a known bug may prevent players from recruiting her if certain conditions are met. Despite developers’ assurances of fixing the bug, some early access players still encounter issues with recruiting Lam despite attempting the standard method.

Tomb Raider Remastered just quietly censored one in-game detail

Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered players are ticked off by the game’s most recent patch, which censors in-game pin-up posters of Lara Croft.

This is why gaming is screwed. When people change things to fit someone’s agenda, it’s a slippery slope downhill.

Christopher9h ago(Edited 9h ago)

Even if that agenda is of the developer? Way to remove developer rights.

***One player called it a “huge problem with modern games,” saying they can now be “ruined AFTER people buy them”.***

The level of drama. Yes, I recall sitting there for more hours than I did anything else in the game. These two pinups are the core of the game, after all!

coolbeans8h ago(Edited 8h ago)

rlow1's cringe catastrophizing aside, I do think developers *ought* to strive to maintain an original work to the best of their ability. The language of a "remaster" tacitly implies that - for good or ill - what's being resold is what fans remember but better.

Profchaos8h ago

Games can be ruined after purchasing them yeah we know this not from this but from GTA IV which had half it's radio content patched out due to licensing expirations and to me that was a huge deal.

This pin up poster is a bit of nonsense but the whole argument of modern games can be ruined post launch is Absol true.

DedicatedDark6h ago(Edited 6h ago)

It's not their work to censor. They are incharge of restoration & remastering the work, not overwriting it.

Barlos5h ago

It's not the agenda of the developer though, they're pandering and trying to increase their ESG score.

Way to support censorship...

victorMaje5h ago

It’s not the end of the world for sure, but I understand the hate towards this kind of change. I believe it’s also a matter of principle.

Imagine a Picasso painting being restored & the restorer deciding there aren’t enough strokes, or some lines aren’t straight enough or curved enough…not sure it would/should sit well with people.

Have all original devs signed off on this change? Even if it’s the case, are we saying older gamers are better mentally equipped to process what was there than current gamers, hence the change?

Enough time ago the case was made that games are an art form. We’re supposed to have won that case.
So which is it? Are games art or not?

Hasn't this been happened for over a decade since remasters? I can't see that it's any worse now. Maybe if Sweet Baby starts getting their hands on remasters we will definitely have a problem.

Rebel_Scum8h ago

tbh I dont see something like this as censorship. Does anyone else not find it strange for someone to stick pin ups of themsleves in a locker room?

Now of it was a pin up of some half naked firefighters it might make sense as Lara might like that, and if they removed that I would cry censorship. But removing pin ups of the main character, yeah I get it.

Barlos5h ago(Edited 5h ago)

It's a game, and they were placed there for the audience. It's not real life. If it was, she wouldn't have fought a T-Rex now would she?

Yes, it's censorship but it's a bit less in your face. If they were in the original game, then they should have been in the remasters. It's bad enough that they have that ridiculous unnecessary warning at the start, but then they start removing things post launch. I don't care how small the change, they shouldn't be doing it. It's nothing but ESG pandering but in a subtle way.

Rebel_Scum4h ago

Look bro, if you have pictures of yourself naked on a bear skin rug up in your house let me tell you, its not normal.

jambola3h ago

It’s mentioned in the article, and it’s a point i 100% agree with, it’s the fact that they can censor a game after you buy it. That’s total bullshit.

Whilst it's an overreaction to say this has "ruined" the game, it's still problematic that this has happened post launch and for many, post-purchase.

I don't want someone to change a product for the worse after I've bought it. The same goes for implementing micro transactions after reviews.

I wonder why they did this? Nobody was kicking up a fuss as far as I'm aware.

It’s funny I’m seeing these articles about pixel remaster, and I just platinumed 1-4 within 8 days lol. I’ve been on FF5 for about a week now. Let’s just say 5 was the start of FF having content like crazy. I should have the plat within 2-3 days.

The game being an accurate represantation of the original was not a slap in the face to the fans. The 3D remasters looked like ass (visually) tbh.
