Many people have said "consoles are dead". With increasing fragmentation (steam, PC gaming, mobile games, Ouya...), and the apparently unstoppable demise of Nintendo, it was clear to some that "dedicated gaming machines" were a thing of the past.

They were apparently wrong.

The article compares the sales of several generations of consoles in the US, and how the PS4 is setting a new record.

Those are really good numbers, but XB1 will get around the same amount sold the first day. Launch doesnt tell you everything because everyone who pre-ordered the PS4 got it day one.

Black Friday is going to be huge for gaming consoles, especially the Wii U. I can see PS4 selling more than Wii U short term but there arent many exclusives for it. It may go through the same drought the Wii U went through.

In early 2014, one of the few games coming out for PS4 is Watch Dogs. Wii U has around 5 games announced for 2014 that are Exclusives only. With exclusion of Miyamotos new IP and SMTxFE and Zelda U.

I am a Nintendo and Playstation gamer, so dont be offended when i say: PS4 is doing great, Wii U will pick up, and both will pass the XB1 in sales. hahahaha

Some people say that mobiles will 'dwarf' the PS4 and XBO in terms of power, but Iphones cost more than the PS4 and the XBO (when they first come out). Could you imagine how expensive that crap would be? It's barely possible anyway, as you would need to develop quantum physics for the damn phone to match the PS4/XBO. You can only make chips and processors so small before they fry like a chicken.

well to be fair that's because there were very few ps3's manufactured at first. it was a b*tch to find one for christmas and stuff.
i would say the ps4 is the first console launch ever that at least slightly meets high consumer demand in terms of numbers shipped.
the xbox one will likely not be far from PS4 at launch, just because i think MS also wanted to have tons of consoles available at launch. if numbers weren't a problem at the launch of last gen, the wii 360 and ps3 would all be much higher.

More than a million people picked up COD:Ghost, Battlefield and AC4 on launch day. And probably close to 900k picked up Killzone:Shadow Fall.

The software attach rate must be extremely high since most everyone purchased over 3 games at launch! I'm sure Fifa and Need for Speed are up there!

Either way it doesn't matter because SHIPPED = SOLD. Sony doesn't do consignment. Once the units leave their distributor they go into Sony's book as sold. In layman's term Sony already made their bank.

Not only is every website sold out of PS4's right now, along with every store in my area, but a couple stores I've been to are wiped out of games and barely has any accessories. Especially every Target with the 3 for 2 deal they offered all week long that ended yesterday. I was going to pick up another 3 games. You snooze you lose.

One last time because people need to get this through their head once and for all and let's put this to rest. SHIPPED = SOLD by the manufacturer or publisher of said product.

These companies don't do consignment. You have to pay Sony for the consoles to get them into your store or online site. Once they leave Sony's distributor? Sony already marks them as sold because they made their bank.

Fastest selling console of ALL time is really frustrating for some I guess. You would think if they were really gamers they would be happy regardless. This means console gaming is NOT dying off, it's growing and in higher demand than ever before.

Congrats to Sony...I had one preordered but canceled when Watch_Dogs and DriveClub got pushed. I decided to wait out the inevitable teething issues every console has at launch, but I'll be there to purchase on 3/21/14 when the Infamous Second Son bundle is available. I will certainly miss Killzone and Resogun, but I've got a decent backlog of Ps3 and to a lesser extent 360 gaming to work through. I'm really looking forward to Infamous, Destiny, The Division, The Witcher 3, MGSV, The Order:1886, Watch_Dogs, and now Uncharted. I'm wondering what Sony's other stellar first party devs are working on and I'm certain there will be many other amazing games that will be added to that list of killers soon enough.

I note that there are thousands of PS4s on offer on Ebay at the moment. I also note that the pricing is relatively low for a new console ($500 range - I expected more price gouging), which means there is more supply in the market than being absorbed.

While I'm more a Wii U fan at the moment (it has games), I'm hoping PS4 does well, but I'm suspicious that downtrend we saw in Wii U as Xmas sales dried up, units were returned, and games failed to quickly materialize, will happen to PS4 too.

let me put this in perspective, the PS4 has done more than 2x the Wiiu's first week sales in a day (which is actually really good ostensibly). And we know games are third party,first party and exclusive are coming as earlier as winter next year. The Wiiu didn't get any thing to until pikmin 3 arguably. No games, things dried up on the wiiu for a while. Don't think that'll be the case for the ps4.

There are TONS of people who bought them with the intention to sell them ... Yes sony makes all the money from the sales and dont care who buys them... But if a large part of that million is going to stay in boxes and not attach any software to them it could hurt them in the long run ...

Some machines have failed which is unfortunate. But how is that different from literally any other system launch? As for a library, the thing is less than 3 days old, give it a break. The exclusive titles aren't as strong as one would hope, but hey man launch games.

At least all the 3rd party games are great, which usually isn't the case, wasn't even the case with the most console launch being the wiiu. I would say that on paper, the X1 has better launch exclusives, well potentially at least. But you don't buy a system based on its launch. If that was the case no one would have ever bought the ps2 or ps3.

They aren't breaking down. The fault rate is actually better than usual and most of the issues are corrected by the user. There are dead units to be sure, but nowhere near a level to upset the success of the launch.
