Unless tens of thousands of people are having issues then it looks like just isolated problems, bad luck for those gamers though.

xPhearR3dx3806d ago

Mine will be delivered here shorty. Here's hoping for the best. So far there's the HDMI issues, this Red Light thing, and it sounding like a jet engine. I hope to experience none of those.

Eonjay3806d ago (Edited 3806d ago )

The problem is, the hundreds of thousands of people with no issue wont make the news. People only publish the small percentage of Mishaps. .4 isn't even 1/2 of 1 percent. That is phenomenal.

By the same token, next week when Xbox launches, we will have to suffer through every instance of every malfunction. There is 0% chance that every unit will be perfect.

mp12893806d ago

@neonridr. i know what you mean, i was one of the unlucky ylod people. my luck cant be this bad with the ps4 though...hopefully

Ezz20133806d ago (Edited 3806d ago )

don't worry
those news of few people is just overblown don't mind it
i have the console and have no problem what so ever so far
hope you enjoy yours :)

but you know,it gonna be very interesting next week when xbox one launch and get it own problems like every console at launch

let's see how fanboys from both sides act then

EDIT:@GGJ
i'm sorry if you didn't understand my point
what i'm saying is that
both consoles will have their own problems like every console at launch
but fanboys will overblown them and act like it's the end of microsoft or sony

fanboys from both sides will show how much hypocrite they are
got my point now ?

PoSTedUP3806d ago

sony said 0.4 and thats a pretty low %. it most definatly will be higher than that. im sure its not there yet, but it will be, and it will surpass that. i bet they are having issues with the ones they had the chinese (japanese?) students build.

Evil_Abed3806d ago

The way you phrased that Ezz, implies you are distancing yourself from fan boyish behavior and yet here in a ps4 RLoD article you feel it necessary to divert attention towards the Xbox and make that the focus.

The ole spin and redirect.

jebabcock3806d ago

The word for that is being polite and considerate while still voicing your opinion. try it. Outside of n4g alot of people having meaningful debates in such manner. Everyone has an opinion. What I don't understand is why an xbox fan would be commenting on here unless they wanted to flame....

Dehnus3806d ago

OY! sounding like a Jet Engine is just cool :). So don't even pretend that that isn't awesome!

Just turn up the volume on your TV, as it is only when you play a game. Or get an aviation scarf and goggles and sit in front of your PV for total win. :D

Now I still like the Wii U a lot more, but I must admit the sound thing was to be expected with that set up. And it isn't a big deal.

It has to do with chip yields. Since Sony needed so many units to supply everybody (I said so before but got a lot of disagrees regarding why there where so few demo units, they need them for preorders!). Some people just get a lesser quality chip, closer to the edge of the wafer then others.

The chip just functions normally, it just gets a bit hooter then the one's in the centre. That is why some PS4's just sound "COOL LIKE A JET ENGINE!".

It is one of the things an early adaptor just has to accept as a risk. The console is fine, just makes a bit more noise then some others.

shoddy3806d ago

At least it's not 33% failure rate

ZeroX98763806d ago

played today, worked fine. connecting online can get you some errors at first (server overload probably?).

Saw my PS4 light change various colors, but no failure as of now.

shoddy3806d ago

Why worry when it's still under warranty.

Go trade it in until you get a working one

darthv723806d ago

Greatness Awaits....by your command (cylon voice)

http://cdn.makeagif.com/med...

Freedomland3806d ago

Why only this site is getting news about overheating again.

FamilyGuy3806d ago

"overheating"?

My ass, I left mine on all night (downloading the free stuff) and my room is pretty warm because of the heater, the PS4 on the other hand has been fine this whole time.

paul-p19883806d ago

If i remember rightly the red line is just an indicator of it being hot and will shut down. I'm sure i read it on here about a month ago, so it shouldn't be a console death...

ThanatosDMC3806d ago

If Vita had a restore option, then i doubt this will be a problem. Sony would be smart enough to add the same functionality.

Sono4213806d ago

I'm doing fine?... So are my 3 friends that got the system.. our experience has been flawless and that's all I really care about XD

mikeslemonade3806d ago

Those guys should stand up the system. My launch PS3 and 4 year old 360 still work because I have them standing up vertically ever since I got them.

xXxSeTTriPxXx3806d ago

My ps4 doesn't make a sound and runs great atm.everything works fine accept for them damn promotion ps+ codes I don't think they stack if your a ps+ member already.

Played from 12:40am to around 3:30am then woke around 10:00am and haven't turned it off since np.

Perjoss3806d ago

"So far there's the HDMI issues, this Red Light thing, and it sounding like a jet engine"

The next Ace Combat is going to be so realistic on the PS4!

redwin3806d ago

Well, I can't sign in to the network ... This sucks. First they tell me that we will have a # of launch titles and then when they get the preorder number they cancel a few before launch. And now this, I can't sigh in to the network. Ahhh

JasonKCK3806d ago

Well I hope they get the problem fixed fast for those gamers. Gamers without games kinda sucks. I had problems with my PC when I first got it. Had to have the power supply replaced 3 times.

BattleAxe3806d ago

Xbox and Nintendo fans can't stand the idea of another PS2 era of domination, so every time a console fails, they'll be all over it like white on rice.

Pogmathoin3806d ago (Edited 3806d ago )

Well said Ezz.... Have had issues with most consoles... PS1, 2, the laser thing, 2 360's..... Had my original Xbox stolen in burglary, so far PS3 are fine.... And somehow these things happened around time of a great game.... Halo 3.... Orange box.... Gta3.... I tell you, it's horrible..... Hope this happens to no one..... Anyone hoping for this shit to happen to someone else, regardless of Sony, MS, deserves a good size 9 boot in the nuts.... So far PS4 is fine.... Only had issues with server earlier.....
Edit, jebbacock, most Xbox articles are swamped by PS fanboys.... Take it as tit for tat.... Nature of N4G....

PS3n3603806d ago

Breakness Awaits! joking joking. Good luck.

nukeitall3806d ago

I find it odd that so many people are having problems with their PS4 on launch day.

I expect some percentage of failure, but that is over longer period of time, not over 6-12 hours!

Crazy Larry3806d ago

I was gonna chalk this up to Xbox fanboys being idiots and making fake posts, but these are Amazon VERIFIED buyers. There's a LOT of unhappy PS4 buyers out there.
http://www.amazon.com/PlayS...

tiffac0083806d ago (Edited 3806d ago )

Guys, relax this is expected. Don't forget there are millions of PS4 that are in the wild now. Tens of thousands PS4 with issues will happen at this early stage. It would be impossible not to.

As I have explained before when the shipment constraints are met and the manufacturing matures, we will see less and less of this.

As long as its not RRoD failure rate numbers then everything should be fine.

rainslacker3806d ago

The only problem I've had so far is that the OS randomly goes back to the home screen from time to time when starting an application. Dunno if this is a bug, or I'm doing something that I'm not supposed to be doing, and admittedly I didn't spend a lot of time perusing the OS. Resogun ended up taking up most of my night.

Anyhow, the system fan is pretty quiet, and you have to listen hard when your sitting on the couch to hear it. The hard drive and laser can make some noise, but nothing bad when you have an actual game running with the sound on. It seemed to run pretty cool, and there wasn't even a lot of hot air being blown out the back.

Have 3 friends that got a PS4 last night, and not a single one of them had a problem. Seems like the broken systems are just normal percentages of failed units off the production line. It sucks, and while we should demand better, it is just the nature of electronics today.

@nuke
You aren't surprised at all. You just want a reason to say that the PS4 has a high fail rate. The people with problems are more likely to say something, but I'm sure you'll ignore the much larger number of people that will say they have had no problems. Here's a thought. The people that have working consoles are spending time basking in the glory of a new generation and not hauling ass to the internet to say how their system works. The second someone has a problem, the first thing they do is Google it, then bitch about it, so DOA console numbers are skewed.

I'm sure you won't be surprised at all when the X1 is going to be getting just as many reports of DOA consoles.

Triella3806d ago (Edited 3806d ago )

All I've seen is people reporting a pulsing blue light. Yesterday I saw it happened live while watching the videogamesawsome live stream when Netflix crashed the PS4. Fraser (the host) tried to reboot the console by pushing and holding the power button for 7 seconds... on his third try after a good 30 seconds of pushing it worked, the console rebooted and everything was pretty fine after that.

DOMination-3806d ago

Its all very well saying its in warranty but when are you gonna get a new one? Theres not going to be much in the way of free stock in stores to swap out for your faulty one.

pixelsword3806d ago (Edited 3806d ago )

m'kay.

UltimateMaster3806d ago

A lot of them could be jealous trolls.
So far, no one that I know of nor that got online had any troubles with theirs.

Neonridr3806d ago

Agreed it looks to be isolated. But I bet you wouldn't care if it's isolated or not if you were one of the unlucky souls in these videos..

Shame, hopefully they get replacement ones ASAP.

tiremfej3806d ago

Shouldn't we expect a 0% failure rate? It's not like $399 is a toss in the bucket. I would expect the same from MS as well. Society as a whole has become complacent on being jacked around by companies...it's not right.

Neonridr3806d ago (Edited 3806d ago )

@tiremfej - I could hope for 0% but realistically there are so many parts inside a video game console that you have to figure sooner or later something will break in it. Same goes with a car, you just end up with a bad part somewhere. These things happen and it's unfortunate.

You never want to see things like this happen, but you pray to god that if it is going to happen, that it happens to the guy standing in front or behind you in the lineup.. ;)

tiremfej3806d ago

@Neon I get it. However, those working parts should not be failing the first day. Cars have many working parts...you don't see them breaking down 1st day out. Obviously over time, not first day.

I understand error is something that happens. Humans make errors, even robots that make the consoles...however we should not just accept it.

gaffyh3806d ago

@tiremfej - There is no such thing as a 0% failure rate for electronics. Even 3-4% is considered normal, which is why it is incomprehensible to expect a 0% failure rate.

oONinjavitiSOo3806d ago

My ps4 is working phenomenally! Sorry to hear some are having issues. I hope nobody has to deal with any issues on ps4 or xboxone. Well back to the games I didn't take the day off to be on n4g.com lol. Have fun everybody!

static52453806d ago

@Tiremfej

Actually cars have a failure rate too. Haven't you ever watched Fight Club? Those jobs actually exist where someone from Car companies go around where cars fail and figure if it actually deserves a recall or not. Cars fail a lot, even on day one off the floor.

Everything has a failure rate. Items are built by humans, Humans are not perfect, hence nothing you buy has a 100% guarantee of working perfectly. Thats why there are guarantees if it breaks you get a new one

rainslacker3806d ago

I feel really bad for the people that have this happen to them. It happened to me way back when when I got the Turbo-CD attachment and it didn't work. It's a really crappy feeling.

I just hope that they are easily replaced at retailers, or that Sony expedites the process of replacing them by sending out a new console along with a return box for the old one...kinda like western digital does with hard drives.

Angels37853806d ago

All I have to say is.....04%....had mine since tuesday.....and nothing wrong.

XB1_PS43806d ago (Edited 3806d ago )

0.4%. Not .04%

Here, from Gameinformer:

Update: Sony has reached out to us to clarify the number of units that could be subject to failure. According to a representative, the .04 percent number we were provided is incorrect by a magnitude of ten. The correct anticipated percentage of units that will suffer from problems is .4 percent. Based on a projection of five million units sold by end of fiscal year (March 31, 2014), that accounts for approximately 20,000 units with hardware problems.

Palaven3806d ago (Edited 3806d ago )

I guess that's 20,000 people who are going to be "Awaiting Greatness" until they get a replacement console. I wonder what they are gonna think about the people who are saying 0.4% is acceptable.

Angels37853806d ago (Edited 3806d ago )

Literally a typo sorry guys but still...its less than one percent

VENOMACR12273806d ago

That .4% I read this morning. Who know's what the number is now that the system has been out for roughly 16 hours. It's only going to go up.

Why is red the universal sign for your F'd? Xbox with the red ring and now PS4 with the red line. Wonder if the X1 has red too for your F'd.

MysticStrummer3806d ago

@Palaven - "I wonder what they are gonna think about the people who are saying 0.4% is acceptable."

Historically speaking, 0.4% isn't just acceptable, it's outstanding.

Crazy Larry3806d ago (Edited 3806d ago )

LOADS of the reviews on Amazon are stating they are having problems. As I said in my post above, I thought it was idiot Xbox fanboys trolling the reviews, but these are VERIFIED Amazon buyers. http://www.amazon.com/PlayS...

3806d ago
rainslacker3806d ago

"I wonder what they are gonna think about the people who are saying 0.4% is acceptable."

Depends on how Sony, or the retailer the person purchased from resolves the issue. A bad thing can be made good again if the company involved takes the time to provide good customer service.

If they do something amazing for those people, then it's just a disappointment and inconvenience. If they jerk them around, then they will rightly be pissed.

And of course there will always some people who will feel that it is the biggest injustice in the world, and rail against it for the rest of their life. Those are usually rare though, the internet just makes them look common.

BallsEye3806d ago (Edited 3806d ago )

0.04% is bulls!t. How they can know the number before people even picked up their ps4? Or they intentionally sold broken ones since they know exactly how many are broken?

http://community.us.playsta...

You guys will believe in anything sony tells you.

http://community.us.playsta...

just look at topic names on official sony forums

insomnium23806d ago

@raptar

"Since people seem to believe what Sony says as 100% truth, does that same courtesy extend to whatever MS says as well? "

MS has a track record of out right lying to people. Things like "you know, things break" and "well within industry standards" come to mind when talking about X360.

You can't compare the two so yeah people are more prone to believing what Sony says to be true.....until they lie straight to our faces

HammerKong3806d ago

hey buudy go and check out again it to be reported 50% of buyers from amazon and still all of them have not recieved their console and it happened so soon it is more curios case than rod(ring of death) from xb360 because it was an software problem and this is having heavy hardware problems and also rod and new beast bod(blue line of death) and may noise and over heating problems and more buyiers from other sites are also same problems in mass and what about buiers who had byied from the shops they are also have not been reported this is the most weakest and hardest launch ever happened in lifetime ,what about me i was also having freezing and servers problem at least they can maintain their severs but that was too having problems,it is always like sony products always have saw'n poor internet services ,this also happened with ps3 and is again happening with ps4 ,xb1 is doing right for bring dedicated servers for us dedicated servers never saw these problems and people will see dedicated servers for every game coming on xb1 not like ps3 and ps4 getting dedicated serevers from only some selected 1 or 2 games in a year.

warczar3806d ago

every one needs to stop regurgitating the .4% number that Shu pulled from his ass. How could they possibly know what the percentage of failed units are at this early stage? the answer is they don't know yet. I feel bad for all those people who paid 500 bucks to stare at the outside of a little black box but that is what you get when you rush out to become an unpaid beta tester.

araman3806d ago (Edited 3806d ago )

Exactly. Name one console that had a 0% failure rate, you can't. Nitpicking on one because of a few reported incidents is confirmation bias. There's also a fun little thing that comes with all these boxes called a "warranty" that means these will get handled, yet some people are acting like everyone that has these issues is SOL.

iamnsuperman3806d ago

The problem is how we all use the Internet now. Think back to 06 and how many shared videos online. Nowadays everything can record a video which means these isolated incidents will get more attention

admiralvic3806d ago

The problem is that we live in a world where you typically only hear the bad.

I go 200+ days at my job without a single report being filed against me and I get one complaint because I made a "rude" comment and my boss gave me a 10 minute long speech about how he has to be able to trust me.

The PlayStation 4 and I assume Xbox One will be the same thing. Very few people are going to say "I got mine and it worked", since thats exactly what every single last buyer expects. We all expect it to come and we expect it to work. So we see a lot of people reporting these issues and it starts to seem like a big deal.

tiremfej3806d ago

@admiralvic Sounds like you're working for the wrong boss...or he/she is young?

Evil_Abed3806d ago

Shhh, let's not report negative news because it is unfair and biased. All of you afflicted with RLoD kindly suffer in silence and darkness because you are upsetting araman.

araman3806d ago

@GGJ, that's not what I meant and you know it. I'm talking about people hearing about a few isolated incidents like this and then blowing it up to say it's widespread. Look up confirmation bias.

T23806d ago

.4% is phenomenal, and people have reported walking into shops buying ps4s today... so there will be lots to replace. This is literally a non issue, wake me up if a failure rate of 10% or more occurs.

3806d ago
ChrisW3806d ago

@admiralvic,

You should try my line of work. My customers complain quite often about me and I don't get one word from my employer about it. I know my customers complain because I hear about it from my other customers.

The biggest reasons for the complaints are; I give too much homework, the curriculum is a bit too difficult, and I'm sometimes too strict. All of which, if ever I'm told of, is assumed that I'm doing a great job by my employer.

warczar3806d ago

@raptar

Micro sold the xbox for 2 years before acknowledging the RROD and instituting a 3 year warranty program for systems that were bought after July 2007. At one time, there was just a 32% yield of one of the test production runs. 68 of every 100 test units were found to be defective. Microsoft knew they were selling us a highly breakable piece of shit, lets hope that Sony isn't doing the same thing right now.

If the same thing would happen to Xbox One next week, you and other won't be this calm and forgiving.

Nykamari3806d ago

No because MS hid the RROD for 2 years before they did anything about it. All launch 360 were bad. It's had a rate of 54% not 33%. Still loved the system though. Last gen had its UPS and downs early but both got a Hell of a lot better in their 4th year on.

n4rc3806d ago

Its hilarious to me how some of you keep exaggerating the rrod numbers... Jesus, your up to 54% now?

It was low to mid 20s... And ps3 sat around 10%

And "rrod" is known for one specific defect... 2 years and thousands of hours later and your console dies isnt the same issue..

overrated443806d ago

Yeah, it's crazy that he's saying 54% because...you know...it was 54%. http://www.ign.com/articles...

Rocky53805d ago

@overrated44

Ok dude your deluded, you do realise your basing your hole argument on 5000 people, right? Thoughts are not the full numbers nor are they from MS.

Just like n4rc said it is hilarious.

I saw a xbox fanboy in Florida destroy a ps4 with a baseball bat just to show how far they will go to put Microsoft in the lead thats just sad really if Sony isn't around you all would be stuck with a big fat DRM snake in you're heads right now but keep acting like that we shall see how far its going to put you guys but don't take my word for it cuz has soon has you speak the truth youre a Sony fanboy all console need to do well real talk

iiwii3806d ago

But it wont put Micrsoft in the lead... It will cancel out next week when an XBox 1 gets smashed in the streets. It happens at every console release. I personally think that those people have a strong mental problem and should be admitted for treatment.

Jeedai Infidel3806d ago

People that act that violently based off of emotions should definitely be monitored closely; hopefully that dude doesn't have children.

reaperofsouls3806d ago

watched ur link, it's insane why would anyone spend $500 on a ps4 then smash it up

Childprod1gy3806d ago

I love how people are saying it's isolated when people are having problems with hard drives, how loud the fans are and the fact that some aren't putting out video. I'm waiting to get mine. This doesn't sound isolated a lot of people are having problems.

DeadMansHand3806d ago (Edited 3806d ago )

Then I'm a very luck soul because I have been playing mine all morning, with patch installed and its quiet and smooth. No major fan kicking on, no glitches or auto shutdowns.

ACBF looks phenomenal.

I also have mine in a open area and always keep my living quarters on the cool side (50-60 degrees).

I have a buddy who has his heat set to 70 degrees or more, keeps all his electronics in a cramped entertainment center and smokes in his house. These are the things that can contribute to your console having problems, too.

1OddWorld3806d ago

I have the PS4 and Have experienced non of these issues. PSN being bogged down is the only issue to be honest. The system is amazing and I would be playing Resogun right now if I wasn't stuck at work.

reaperofsouls3806d ago

A few isolated incidents which are being over-sensationalized by biased gaming websites and Xbot zealots. Every console launch has teething problems remember the problems with DVD play back on ps2 and don't get me started on RROD on the 360 i had to personally buy 3 over a period of 2 years.

n4rc3806d ago

Its not being sensationalized.. These videos and reports are coming from Ps4 owners..

It seems more like some want to sweep it under the rug like it isn't happening... Its a fact of life, some x1s will have issues too.. Its why we ha e warranties..

But trying to downplay it isnt helping anyone

reaperofsouls3806d ago

@ n4rc
a few report of faultly ps4 is insignificant considering how many actually been sold this launch. Many of these reports will also be fabrications from Xbots. PS4bots will do the same at the xbox launch also distorting any true figures.

AndrewLB3806d ago

I suggest you go check out the official Sony support fourms. These are not isolated incidents it seems. http://community.us.playsta...

N7KIRK3806d ago

Haha, not that I care. Though if this was the Xbox, you can bet our opinions wouldn't be so forgiving.

"0.4%?!? Blashphemy!"

Battlefieldlover3806d ago

Mine is working like a dream. Downloading all the plus stuff now. Had an extra rubber circle thing so no wobble. Didn't sound like a jet engine when I played shadow fall. I guess I'm lucky or the vocal minority are making a mountain out of a mole hill. I don't mean to sound insensitive but electronics fail and reading the one star reviews on amazon (where I got mine) you'd swear sony murdered there parents and worse half are from "non verified" purchases.

kreate3806d ago

the first video was a obvious troll video.
however the other 3 videos look more real.

i wonder if this red line of death is really true.
or if its just a fluke between EA titles and ps4, or a firmware update issue with millions of people logging in.

it doesnt look like a over-heating issue. how can a console overheat in 1 day?
looks more like software issue.

if red line of death is true, i can only blame sony for this retarded situation.

Seraphim3806d ago

aside from having a hard time signing into my PSN and a few HDMI hiccups at first I have no complaints....

I have to agree with everyone though. The internet blows these small percentage issues out of proportion. Like another member pointed out, there's 0% chance there will be 0% issues with any of these consoles. Same can be said for any electronics in general. Shits going to happen and that's simply the fact of the matter.

Go check the reviews on amazon. I would venture and say about 50% of them are none functioning PS4s. For all the greatness the PS4 is it only gets 3 stars on amazon.

BallsEye3806d ago (Edited 3806d ago )

Same thing was happening with RROD on 360. I had 6 xboxes 360 in lifetime (was selling and buying due to region change, new versions etc) none of them ever had RROD. I stilll use my launch system from 2006, works perfectly fine. None of my mates had the issue as well, yet everyone (especiallt n4g) were bragging about how huge the issue was. With that being said..trust me, if it will be your unit that will not work out of the box, you will change your mind, that issue is not big.

resi53806d ago

The same thing did not happen with rrod. The rrod issue was present in a huge amount of units. Whether the rld will affect the console to the scale is hard to tell at this point and we'd be better off waiting till after the eu release to see if this is big or small in terms of scale

Sweep143806d ago

A 4% failure rate is considered a success in this industry when launching a new hardware to the mass.

So with 1-2 millions PS4 launching this year, expect 40000-80000 defective PS4.

That's bad luck when it happens to you but that's not the end of the world. Your PS4 is under warranty

dlocsta3805d ago

You are 100% wrong. Sony uses six sigma for quality which means only 3.4 bad units out of every 1 million produced. Yes it is true, I worked for Sony so I kind of know what I am talking about. This is a catastrophic failure according to six sigma.

Fox2M3806d ago

It's all over reddit so you can expect a response from sony soon.

Sayai jin3806d ago

No Red Line for me. I am enjoying my PS4! I had some trouble logging in to PSN launch night, but it was expected though...everyone was eagerly turning on their beast. The only issue I have had is that the system has locked up 5 times so far and had to reboot in safe mode. I am sure there is a patch incoming.

HammerKong3806d ago

man i'am ripped apart by my ps4 i got it early and first time my ps4 showed problem day before yeastarday when my ps4 freeze and crashed while playing battlefield 4 and when it start working just afrer whole server was broken and it reported that connection is lost and i checked my internet it was perfectly working but not psu and its services whole server broke down and i first get to notice the problems ,so it dont seems like these are software problems because software is have nothing to do with servers and hardware problems causes crashes and over heating and it was very hot while then and also crashed ,these problems use to last while the end of this gen same happened with xb360 last gen ,while then software problems like rod wher solved they never was able to solve over heating isseues .So it seems like it will last throught the gen because for solving this they will have to bring lot of variatons in hardware ,which is not possible at big scale ,same happened with xb360 because they cant't change the whole desigh and configurations of machine but can only reduce then in updated versions and other customers on amzon are also reporting this problems at big scale and there are also other problems reported like very nosoisy like jet engiene ,return of ring of death and new kind of beast blue line of death ,also some auto ejecting out of discs and i can say one thing about ps4 wether it is doa(dead or alive) or it can be doa(dead on arival) and i dont want ps4 to be dead and with time i will get to know more problemss about my ps4.

ashcroft3806d ago

Funny how calm some sound. If this was Xbox.It would be a fan-boy parade calling it a failure.

LiQuiZoN3805d ago

System has been excellent for my brother and myself. LOVE the PS4!! Sony did an excellent job!

dlocsta3805d ago

I used to work for Sony. My team, I was the manager, produced the repair manuals for Sony TVs. Sony is a Six Sigma organization. For those who don't know Six Sigma is a quality program that means there should only be 3.4 defective parts per million. That means no more than 4 bad PS4 in the first million. Have fun with your BLD! Now is the slightly larger and very well cooled Xbox One so bad? We will find out in six days. If it goes off without a hitch Sony is in trouble and I don't mean games, I mean as a business and financially.

What ? So soon? /: cant wait to get my hands on a ps4 though.

Ma1nframe3806d ago

Not true. Only 0.04% of PS4's have had any issues, and they are with the HDMI port it seems. Yawn chock this one up to bs internet rumors.

Gemmol3806d ago

everyone post this 0.4 percent number, what if they just post that number to not bring fear to the masses. what if the number was 25 percent to 40 percent, would people avoid the system more, or would they take a chance like they did with hearing 0.4 percent

admiralvic3806d ago

Well, the Xbox 360 had a 50%+ failure rate ( http://kotaku.com/5339555/r... ), yet the generation wasn't completely dominated by the PlayStation 3.

The long / short of it is, Sony is giving a number that has some sort of logic behind it. There are ways to estimate how many would have a problem, though people need to understand that this is an estimated number and not a straight up fact.

PlanetExpressShip3806d ago

And what if hitler never died and Germany is just lying
There's probably only a .00001% chance of that happening, but what if it was 25-40 percent!?
I'm not taking a chance on that , I mean look at those numbers I made up!

Death3806d ago

They will never release the actual numbers or real percentage. I have no idea how they can even say they expect .4% or 20,000 of the expected 5 million sold by years end to be defective. The only possible answer is they had .4% of the 4000 Taco Bell consoles and the additional consoles given to media reported as defective. That would be a total of approx 16 consoles reported the day before launch. At best, the .4% represents the percentage of consoles they expect to die on day 1. They have no idea how time will impact these numbers. The only way we will know if this is a design issue or quaity control issue is to wait and see. Once again though, we will never know the actual numbers.

Saigon3806d ago

@Death,

If I am not mistaken, Sony didn't say that. It was one of the gaming sites that gave that estimation based on the first roll out numbers. Sony stated there were 7 out of the 4000 that were faulty. Those were the numbers reported and I am sure it increased. At the time I calculated .002% when that statement was made.

AndrewLB3806d ago (Edited 3806d ago )

admiralvic- That's a bunch of crap. Squaretrade did a survey of 16,000 xbox 360 owners and the failure rate was 23.7%. Only 12% were RROD failures and the other 11% were due to other problems like the E74 error. I'm not saying these are good numbers, considering the 360 was 2x as likely to fail as the PS3, but the throwing around of bogus numbers which rely on small sample groups along with questions like "do you know anyone who had their 360 fail", which greatly skews the numbers because of statistical overlap.

http://www.gamespot.com/art...

Btw... the high failure rate was due to screw-ups over at IBM who designed the processor, and they largely were the ones who ate the cost of the failures.

rainslacker3806d ago (Edited 3806d ago )

@Saigon,

Sony did say this number in response to an article that had it higher, think 2% or something.

@Death,

The .4 is probably derived from the internal expected number of units to be faulty off the production line. These are numbers they estimate ahead of time based on quality of the production facility, and type/amount of quality control checks put into the production pipeline.

There are always some faulty units that fall through the cracks since testing is done on a sapling pool from a lot of machines made. They randomly test units, and if a certain percentage comes back faulty, they test them all. If not, they are all sent out.

It is highly impractical to do a full test on every single unit off the production line. It's not even practical to do a partial test on every single unit. This is particularly true the more complicated the electronics device gets, and becomes exponentially harder as higher number of units are produced.

On top of that, while the components in these electronics are made by machines, they are assembled by humans. The human factor can lead to defects. It's even possible that an entire batch of faulty chips could be sent out due to the nature of silicon. No matter how precise the machine making these parts is, there will always be faulty units that make it through. This is where the rumored yield production issues came from on the X1. It implied that a good number of the chips made, just didn't meet standard.

Otherwise, the difference between this, and what MS did with releasing faulty units, is that there was a known defect in the design of the 360 which caused the RROD. What Sony is doing is pretty standard in the industry.

It really does suck for those that get a faulty system, and I feel for them. I just hope it gets solved quickly, and to their satisfaction.

I really do think it's WAY too early to tell if this is a widespread problem though. It's pretty obvious that the people that have problems early are going to go straight to the internet and try to solve them, which means sharing their problem, which makes the problem look massive when compared to the numbers that are actually using the system and not on the internet.

RAGE913806d ago (Edited 3806d ago )

So far.

Edit*

That was the percentage rate before release. As a gamer I hope Sony sort this out.

Software_Lover3806d ago

How in the hell do you know how many ps4's have been sold and how many have had problems?

People are pulling this number from the deepest regions of their arses!!!

Palaven3806d ago (Edited 3806d ago )

@Software_Lover

So your saying Shuhei Yoshida is "pulling this number from the deepest regions of his arse?" https://twitter.com/yosp/st... I suppose he could be lying, he did say the "red line of death" wasn't true a few months ago.

admiralvic3806d ago

The number comes from Sony and there are ways to estimate such figures. Also, it in no way means that only .4% will be affected, just that the failure rate should be somewhere in that range (be it higher or lower).

Long story short, it's a figure that I am certain Sony can explain if legally pressed, but means absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of things.

Gemmol3806d ago

look at my post above, if sony were to say the number is higher would you still go to the system??? there are reasons people put low numbers in the news, no one wants a bad press or image, I think the number is higher but it do not matter, they already made the sale.......@palaven

Software_Lover3806d ago

Reply to Palaven.........

The question still stands. He either.

A)knew that from manufacturing exactly how many were defective and decided to ship them anyway knowing exactly how many were defective

B)Knows exactly how many have been sold in less than 24hours and exactly how many are damaged.

So which one is it?

If neither, he is just guessing out of his arse also.

Death3806d ago

The day before launch the only systems out were the 4000 Taco Bell consoles and the ones given to media outlets for New York preview. We may have had around 4100 in peoples hands. If we take .4% of those, we have 16 defective consoles out the gate. That would be reasonable if we knew of 7 or 8 that were reported leaving 8 defects that didn't make it to the various media outlets.

If they expect to deliver 5 million by years end, that would mean there is a potential 20,000 defective units that will be deliverd if it holds to .4% which is way below industry standards. Keep in mind these numbers are taken from defects before day 1. We have no idea if the number will remain very low at .4% since it can change over time.

Anyway you look at it, there is nothing to indicate a mass problem at this point. Time will tell if there is an issue outside the norm.

I get it everyone is gonna down play this, but what if it happen to you, would you still brush it off like things happen.....next question what if it happen to you again, will you be like 360 owners who own more then 5 360s or would you give up on the console

Gemmol3806d ago

I feel you, but I always told myself if my console break, I am going to the next company, I refuse to buy same console twice, but I can see why Xbox fans did it for the 360

nick3093806d ago

Had 2 ps3's dying on me... Right after warrenty ended/:

Nocando3806d ago

What about after 90 days?

NateCole3806d ago

It means you got one of the bad ones and you use the warranty now.

It sucks but no one can seriouly expect a zero chance of getting a defective device.

T23806d ago

if you get a new system who cares... if you gotta go buy a new one then hell ya that's a problem. by the way sony has an extended warranty as well.

rainslacker3806d ago

If it happened to me, I wouldn't brush it off. I would be trying to resolve the problem to my satisfaction. That seems to be what a majority of the people want from telling their stories. In the Sony forums, it seems to be people are trying to find a resolution, with the occasional person being uppity about it.

However, on here, some people are making it into a major thing, and trying to imply that it may be a widespread problem, which at this point it certainly isn't.

I believe a vast majority of people do understand that things like this aren't perfect. They understand that electronics manufacturing isn't 100% perfect. While I'm sure those people are disappointed, if they say it's because Sony sucks or the hardware itself sucks(implying design flaws), then it's really hard to take them seriously.

The worst part, at the moment, is that the people with faulty consoles may have trouble replacing them as, unless I'm wrong(haven't checked), because there isn't enough retail stock to facilitate exchanges. That means sending the machine directly to Sony, which obviously takes time, and it is the weekend.

PositiveEmotions3806d ago

Nope my ps4 works fine but i cant play ray movies :(

Eonjay3806d ago

I think you have to enable it from setting. Don't quote me on that though... I don't get mines for a few more hours.

WitWolfy3806d ago

Downlaod that 300mb update that will enable the feature.

PositiveEmotions3806d ago

Where do i get the 300mb update?

Bgibbs3806d ago

@positive

Hit up on the UI, you should have a new notification saying that a system update is available. Assuming you have the PS4 hooked up to the internet
