The problem is, the hundreds of thousands of people with no issue wont make the news. People only publish the small percentage of Mishaps. .4 isn't even 1/2 of 1 percent. That is phenomenal.

By the same token, next week when Xbox launches, we will have to suffer through every instance of every malfunction. There is 0% chance that every unit will be perfect.

Now I still like the Wii U a lot more, but I must admit the sound thing was to be expected with that set up. And it isn't a big deal.

It has to do with chip yields. Since Sony needed so many units to supply everybody (I said so before but got a lot of disagrees regarding why there where so few demo units, they need them for preorders!). Some people just get a lesser quality chip, closer to the edge of the wafer then others.

The chip just functions normally, it just gets a bit hooter then the one's in the centre. That is why some PS4's just sound "COOL LIKE A JET ENGINE!".

It is one of the things an early adaptor just has to accept as a risk. The console is fine, just makes a bit more noise then some others.

Guys, relax this is expected. Don't forget there are millions of PS4 that are in the wild now. Tens of thousands PS4 with issues will happen at this early stage. It would be impossible not to.

As I have explained before when the shipment constraints are met and the manufacturing matures, we will see less and less of this.

The only problem I've had so far is that the OS randomly goes back to the home screen from time to time when starting an application. Dunno if this is a bug, or I'm doing something that I'm not supposed to be doing, and admittedly I didn't spend a lot of time perusing the OS. Resogun ended up taking up most of my night.

Anyhow, the system fan is pretty quiet, and you have to listen hard when your sitting on the couch to hear it. The hard drive and laser can make some noise, but nothing bad when you have an actual game running with the sound on. It seemed to run pretty cool, and there wasn't even a lot of hot air being blown out the back.

Have 3 friends that got a PS4 last night, and not a single one of them had a problem. Seems like the broken systems are just normal percentages of failed units off the production line. It sucks, and while we should demand better, it is just the nature of electronics today.

You aren't surprised at all. You just want a reason to say that the PS4 has a high fail rate. The people with problems are more likely to say something, but I'm sure you'll ignore the much larger number of people that will say they have had no problems. Here's a thought. The people that have working consoles are spending time basking in the glory of a new generation and not hauling ass to the internet to say how their system works. The second someone has a problem, the first thing they do is Google it, then bitch about it, so DOA console numbers are skewed.

I'm sure you won't be surprised at all when the X1 is going to be getting just as many reports of DOA consoles.

All I've seen is people reporting a pulsing blue light. Yesterday I saw it happened live while watching the videogamesawsome live stream when Netflix crashed the PS4. Fraser (the host) tried to reboot the console by pushing and holding the power button for 7 seconds... on his third try after a good 30 seconds of pushing it worked, the console rebooted and everything was pretty fine after that.

@tiremfej - I could hope for 0% but realistically there are so many parts inside a video game console that you have to figure sooner or later something will break in it. Same goes with a car, you just end up with a bad part somewhere. These things happen and it's unfortunate.

I feel really bad for the people that have this happen to them. It happened to me way back when when I got the Turbo-CD attachment and it didn't work. It's a really crappy feeling.

I just hope that they are easily replaced at retailers, or that Sony expedites the process of replacing them by sending out a new console along with a return box for the old one...kinda like western digital does with hard drives.

Depends on how Sony, or the retailer the person purchased from resolves the issue. A bad thing can be made good again if the company involved takes the time to provide good customer service.

If they do something amazing for those people, then it's just a disappointment and inconvenience. If they jerk them around, then they will rightly be pissed.

And of course there will always some people who will feel that it is the biggest injustice in the world, and rail against it for the rest of their life. Those are usually rare though, the internet just makes them look common.

Micro sold the xbox for 2 years before acknowledging the RROD and instituting a 3 year warranty program for systems that were bought after July 2007. At one time, there was just a 32% yield of one of the test production runs. 68 of every 100 test units were found to be defective. Then I'm a very luck soul because I have been playing mine all morning, with patch installed and its quiet and smooth. No major fan kicking on, no glitches or auto shutdowns.

I also have mine in a open area and always keep my living quarters on the cool side (50-60 degrees).

I have a buddy who has his heat set to 70 degrees or more, keeps all his electronics in a cramped entertainment center and smokes in his house. These are the things that can contribute to your console having problems, too.

Mine is working like a dream. Downloading all the plus stuff now. Had an extra rubber circle thing so no wobble. Didn't sound like a jet engine when I played shadow fall. Same thing was happening with RROD on 360. I had 6 xboxes 360 in lifetime (was selling and buying due to region change, new versions etc) none of them ever had RROD. I stilll use my launch system from 2006, works perfectly fine. None of my mates had the issue as well, yet everyone (especiallt n4g) were bragging about how huge the issue was. With that being said..trust me, if it will be your unit that will not work out of the box, you will change your mind, that issue is not big.

The same thing did not happen with rrod. The rrod issue was present in a huge amount of units. Whether the rld will affect the console to the scale is hard to tell at this point and we'd be better off waiting till after the eu release to see if this is big or small in terms of scale

A 4% failure rate is considered a success in this industry when launching a new hardware to the mass.

So with 1-2 millions PS4 launching this year, expect 40000-80000 defective PS4.

That's bad luck when it happens to you but that's not the end of the world. Your PS4 is under warranty

The long / short of it is, Sony is giving a number that has some sort of logic behind it. There are ways to estimate how many would have a problem, though people need to understand that this is an estimated number and not a straight up fact.

They will never release the actual numbers or real percentage. I have no idea how they can even say they expect .4% or 20,000 of the expected 5 million sold by years end to be defective. The only possible answer is they had .4% of the 4000 Taco Bell consoles and the additional consoles given to media reported as defective. That would be a total of approx 16 consoles reported the day before launch. At best, the .4% represents the percentage of consoles they expect to die on day 1. They have no idea how time will impact these numbers. The only way we will know if this is a design issue or quaity control issue is to wait and see. Once again though, we will never know the actual numbers.

admiralvic- That's a bunch of crap. Squaretrade did a survey of 16,000 xbox 360 owners and the failure rate was 23.7%. Only 12% were RROD failures and the other 11% were due to other problems like the E74 error. I'm not saying these are good numbers, considering the 360 was 2x as likely to fail as the PS3, but the throwing around of bogus numbers which rely on small sample groups along with questions like "do you know anyone who had their 360 fail", which greatly skews the numbers because of statistical overlap.

The .4 is probably derived from the internal expected number of units to be faulty off the production line. These are numbers they estimate ahead of time based on quality of the production facility, and type/amount of quality control checks put into the production pipeline.

There are always some faulty units that fall through the cracks since testing is done on a sapling pool from a lot of machines made. They randomly test units, and if a certain percentage comes back faulty, they test them all. If not, they are all sent out.

It is highly impractical to do a full test on every single unit off the production line. It's not even practical to do a partial test on every single unit. This is particularly true the more complicated the electronics device gets, and becomes exponentially harder as higher number of units are produced.

On top of that, while the components in these electronics are made by machines, they are assembled by humans. The human factor can lead to defects. It's even possible that an entire batch of faulty chips could be sent out due to the nature of silicon. No matter how precise the machine making these parts is, there will always be faulty units that make it through. This is where the rumored yield production issues came from on the X1. It implied that a good number of the chips made, just didn't meet standard.

Otherwise, the difference between this, and what MS did with releasing faulty units, is that there was a known defect in the design of the 360 which caused the RROD. What Sony is doing is pretty standard in the industry.

It really does suck for those that get a faulty system, and I feel for them. I just hope it gets solved quickly, and to their satisfaction.

I really do think it's WAY too early to tell if this is a widespread problem though. It's pretty obvious that the people that have problems early are going to go straight to the internet and try to solve them, which means sharing their problem, which makes the problem look massive when compared to the numbers that are actually using the system and not on the internet.

The day before launch the only systems out were the 4000 Taco Bell consoles and the ones given to media outlets for New York preview. We may have had around 4100 in peoples hands. If we take .4% of those, we have 16 defective consoles out the gate. That would be reasonable if we knew of 7 or 8 that were reported leaving 8 defects that didn't make it to the various media outlets.

If they expect to deliver 5 million by years end, that would mean there is a potential 20,000 defective units that will be deliverd if it holds to .4% which is way below industry standards. Keep in mind these numbers are taken from defects before day 1. We have no idea if the number will remain very low at .4% since it can change over time.

Anyway you look at it, there is nothing to indicate a mass problem at this point. Time will tell if there is an issue outside the norm.

If it happened to me, I wouldn't brush it off. I would be trying to resolve the problem to my satisfaction. That seems to be what a majority of the people want from telling their stories. In the Sony forums, it seems to be people are trying to find a resolution, with the occasional person being uppity about it.

However, on here, some people are making it into a major thing, and trying to imply that it may be a widespread problem, which at this point it certainly isn't.

I believe a vast majority of people do understand that things like this aren't perfect. They understand that electronics manufacturing isn't 100% perfect. While I'm sure those people are disappointed, if they say it's because Sony sucks or the hardware itself sucks(implying design flaws), then it's really hard to take them seriously.

The worst part, at the moment, is that the people with faulty consoles may have trouble replacing them as, unless I'm wrong(haven't checked), because there isn't enough retail stock to facilitate exchanges. That means sending the machine directly to Sony, which obviously takes time, and it is the weekend.

Sadly my PS4 sounds like a Jet when ever I play KillZone. It reminds me of my original fat xbox360 it is really loud. I am sorry I would rather have a fatter uglier unit that is not disturbing I am not a happy camper, and I really looked forward to the PS4. These cases don't seem to have anything to do with overheating but to do with messed up firmware updating as two videos out of three show the updating prompt before the blinking red line beings.

I have not seen one comment on here saying the 360 did not have issues. I had two that ended up with RROD. The first ran for 2 years and I got replaced under warrantee and the replacement crapped out about 2 years after that. It was also replaced under warrantee. I have not had a problem since. It sucked and I was pissed but such is life.

The point @Hartsy is making is that he decided to go for an Xbox One because he felt the close confines of the PS4 design made him think there may be overheating issues. He felt safer going with the Xbox One for now as cooling was a major factor in the design of it. He is getting a PS4 next year when hopefully they have these issues resolved.

Been saying it for weeks and i have got lots of disagrees from Sony fans. The PS4 casing is very small, so most of the heat is been funnelled inside, the console and, it could lead to issues over time.

Often it could take weeks or months, for systems to fail. But, this very quick, quicker than i assumed.

There is a reason the XB1 is much bigger than the PS4, it wasn't a design choice, it was to make sure the heat got properly ventilated out and not repeat the 360 launch mistakes.

There's no rumours here everyone. You have to look at the article for what it is. These are videos of people who have had issues. This isn't made up BS by XB1 fanboys or anything like that. Nobody said that this will be a problem across the board, nobody said that the success rate of the PS4 isn't amazing (although I expect that number to climb to a lot higher than .04% - those were early numbers, most people didn't have their consoles by then yet).

But to jump up and down and claim that this is all false and BS is just crazy. The videos are there to back up the claims. If yours failed, you'd be pissed too, I highly doubt any of you would stand back and say, "Electronics do fail, so I guess I should appreciate that fact". You would be madder than hell. Sony will fix the issue for these players, but it doesn't change the fact that they are now without their PS4 for some time.

Mines been fine, and I love the PS4 but I'm going to be realistic here. I knew I was rolling the dice buying a launch console. Reason being I know there was a massive push to ready as many of these as possible, as fast as possible, and at a Foxconn facility.

Remember the article about some Chinese university forcing their students to work at Foxconn for credits assembling PS4's?

All those defective iPhones that happen at launch are also a direct result of massive manufacturing load in substandard Foxconn factories.

The sad reality of all electronics, is they all are manufactured in slave labor level sweatshops and have high failure rates. Add in the push of trying to make a few million in a short span for a launch and well, you're going to have defects.

The thing to remember is the Xbox one is being made in the same place, and has practically the same components. Unfortunately all of us who are early adopters are rolling the dice.

NO problems here. My PS4 was pretty loud and I could hear the game making alot of noise the first five minutes I played KZ. But after a few minutes it went away and its been running smoothly. Its still louder than my PS3, but I don't know if thats a problem. How loud are your PS4s compared to the PS3 slims?? Any feedback helps, because I may send it back for a replacement if its supposed to be quieter.

For those of you that's saying this seems to be an isolated HDMI issue, that's partially correct, that's really not a real issue. Don't focus so much on that and overlook the RED LINE OF DEATH that the article you are committing on is talking about. Don't look over the 747 jet engine noise problem that some people are having. These reports are coming NOT from xbox fanboys, but from people who have PS4's with issues. I read that you guys should not put any pressure on top of your PS consoles because the heat sink is right on top of the chip and it is burning the chip when people put pressure trying to change the HHD in some cases. It said let the unit cool down 40 min before changing the HHD after the console has been turned on. I'm scared SH**less that my Xbox1 is going to have something wrong with it when it gets here. I would not wish this on anyone.

Have you seen the inside of an Xb1? I have, it has an absolutely huge fan that sits on top of the CPU/GPU. There also appears to be some sort of copper heat pipe system beneath the humongous fan.

It seems to me that the last thing that MS wants is a repeat of last gens disaster. I'm not saying that the system will be perfect, but for the people wishing for similar heating issues with the Xb1 just so they feel better about the PS4 overheating woes; don't bet on it! Something else to consider is that the Xb1 was built to stay on 24/7 in a low power state.

I got my PS4 last night and the only issue I have had is getting on PSN. Today I have been able to get on PSN and have played my console pretty much all day. I have played Killzone ,Assassins Creed,Nba2k14 and Battlefield and have had no fan issues at all there were a few times where I honestly had to put my ear near the machine to hear anything and this is while playing the game. Also the unit produces little to no heat what so ever.

I am sure there are cases of machine failure and I feel very sorry for whomever it happens to. Thankfully it "seems" to be a small minority of systems and not a large number of units. Also there is a one year warranty.... if the % is truly as low as it appears the chances of you getting several defective units should be minimal.

I am actually pretty amazed by how well this first run console is put together. cannot wait on my XB1 hope it fares as well.

Been playing my PS4 all night installed 5 games while playing killzone and upgraded the HDD to a 1TB. Live streamed it all night. Only game that crashed for me was BF4 . The console is whisper quiet and the temps in my room are about 83℉ and the PS4 operating at around 94℉ while doing all that. I have no issues as of yet. I am sorry for those who do.

People need to remember that Sony isn't doing final assembly of the PS4, it is Foxconn and a couple other Chinese final assembly and testing plants. If you have bought Chinese products, the quality control is still really poor. This HDMI connector problem sounds like it might have happened in an early production build. A lot of times, it isn't the best to get the first off-the-line production units. Still, if these assembly problems are showing up, one of the plants is slipping up on final inspection.

I'm pretty sure that the 0.4% that every one keeps quoting is the figure that sony gave on Wednesday after the early release units arrived. I haven't seen sony restate that figure today anywhere. the fact that probably a million or so units were turned on today is enough to suggest that number has changed. especially since Wednesday there were only 2 fatal issues, the metal in hdmi port, and blue pulsating light. now that there are at least 5 fatal issues that number has surely changed. if there was a sony press release today that I'm missing will someone please comment with link that would be appreciated. if the number is .4 that is by all means an extremely good percentage for a new technology release. I work warranty repair for hp and they like to keep there failure percentage above 96% just to give some contrast

He didn't get the console and he gave 1 star. Nice try, idiot (like every other idiot that just wants to undermine the console). I know there are failing units, even after 1-2 years, i had friend getting a failing PS3 slim/Xbox 360 slim in this period, i imagine during launch is worse.
If people need to do fake reviews just because they're rotten fanboys (speaking in general, not only in this case, about all the companies) it means they're really scared/jealous. It's very sad tho... Oh, and "ratings" from people like this one?

Well of course there is disagree because yes you are right there are a lot of people who are not verified purchase on Amazon but thats goes for the 5-Star and 1-Star reviews. But for both it is fact that there are way more verified purchase than non-verified purchase for the reviews so your comment is biased as in somehow making it seem as if only the 1-stars only have non-verified purchases with reviews when in fact the 5-star has just as many (regardless if this was your intent or not). Yet either way as I said the verified purchase for both far out weigh the non-ver.

So yes it is a good system because it allows people to decide for themselves if they should take a certain review serious or not because of the simple fact that they show who purchased the item or not.

I was really bummed I couldn't find a system in any store. Now I feel kinda lucky I didn't get one yet this seems to be more widespread than some of you think, I feel really bad for all of you having problems, as for those of you with working systems don't brag or be cocky and downplay the complaints, just because your console is working now doesn't mean it won't blow a gasket at any moment (hope it don't) but good luck to all of you!

Something to keep in mind here re:Amazon complaints. With Amazon selling around 300,000-400,000 units in one day, only 300 complaints is not a statistically significant number,. The majority of people who got good PS4(like myself) are not gonna bother posting how great the thing is on Amazon. On the other hand, if it is broke, I think there is a better than 50% chance that you will post a complaint.

You are wrong Most people in general do not make reviews for items regardless if the item is having issues or not. There are currently 467 reviews for the PS4 on Amazon. 231 with 5-Star rating and 198 with 1-Star rating. That right there alone disproves your poin though you are right more people will complain about issues people without issues but either way most people do not make reviews on sites for items they buy regardless.

I myself will admit to being an xbox fanboy but i think its a bit unfair for most of the comments towards Sony, i mean its the FIRST time we get to play with these badboys in our home, but shit happens its a part of life, i fully expect the Xbox One to have defective hardware at launch, like a lot of the users are saying no console is going to have a 0% failure rate, it saddens me really that the people who spent their hard earned money and their product isnt working the way it should. Im sure Sony will jump on it asap, they say they listen to the gamers well hopefully you few who have this issue get it resolved because i know if it happened to me, id be pissed too.

Looks like Sony took the shortcut with PS4.Even 360 didn't break like this at launch,it took about 2 weeks for first mass complaints.Most of the units lasted a year or so...I was there,meh

It will be interesting to see how Sony handles this,numbers wont help them here.Lots of angry folks around for sure.Kinda funny how quickly internet stopped hating Xbone though...lol

Hi,guys. Not that my opinion is anymore valid than yours, but it's generally accepted that a 3-4% failure rate is within tolerance for complex electrical/electronic devices. Also, it's worth noting that most electrical appliances are expected to fail within a very short period of time from new -if they're going to fail, or at the end of their anticipated lifetime. That's assuming of course, that there isn't a definite design fault as with the 360.Based on that premise, I would expect to see the failure rate over the first six months be representative of the overall quality. Sony usually manufacture high quality hardware -it's what they do, right? I know it's no consolation if you're one of the small percentage, but let's keep thing in proportion at this early stage. Obviously MS will be expecting the same 3-4% early failures - that's life.

I played mine for almost 12 hours straight yesterday. It's silent and does not overheat at all. My PS3 and laptop run much hotter than that. No red line of death so far :p The only thing I can say is I had trouble gettng it online for about 10 minutes or so on its first boot. I rebooted it and it connected fine.

To be fair, no one is going to admit the console has over heating issues, it would impact pre-orders, the fact it has an over heating indicator suggests the console can over heat and has done during development and testing, otherwise it wouldn't be there. Anyway, enjoy the console chaps, I may well pick one up myself next year when the system is more stable and the price has come down a bit. Best wishes

I am currently on a PS4 BF4 binge .... 7 hours in no heating issues no blue light or red light of death.... no jet engine.... nothing but good fun gaming. I will wait on OFFICIAL numbers to come out as a lot of this seems like propaganda and lies. I have 14 friends who all have a PS4 and out of them all 14 have worked since the midnight launch with no issues. Does that mean the PS4 works at a 100% clip? No and it would be foolish to assume so. But a lot of this is just a certain vocal group of people seeking attention. It really is pretty sad, Side note if you have a PS4 give Resogun and Trine 2 a go they are fun as all hell.

Here is two problems I had with ps4 on day one
1st was and still is when you go in and out of bf4 (idk about other games) to try voicw chat or invite friend to my server it will start game round where you cant press any button so you cant play-you can only press ps button and close application and start it back again
2nd I only had this error one time when I was downloading bf4 update and simply browsing through the menus ps4 just turn off for me....the light in the middle turned off, the video turned off on tv but the fans were still running so I figured it just restarts itself since its an update but it never did it just sat there and I could not press any button to turn it off either (power button didnt do anything and disc would not eject) so I just jacked the power cord out of it and after that it booted up saying dont do this or you might loose your data and sit worked perfect since that time

Ignoring all the fanboy wars, here is what concerns me. Some people who have had problems have been told there aren't any replacement systems available for them. Normally a manufacturer holds back a certain number of their product just for such situations so I'm a little worried Sony isn't as prepared as they should be. I'm also very skeptical of any posts giving a percentage of defective units. One, it's too early to tell and two, manufacturers are not required to give that number so they are most likely manipulating it.

I hope the people having problems get a relatively quick fix. Sucks to spend all that money and not be able to use it.

The large majority of reported PS4 problems have come from the first ones handed out for free to review sites (IGN, Kotaku, etc.) and contest winners. These were probably first off the line and all production lines have start up problems. A day after launch, if there was some major defect, there would be thousands and thousands of reports. Ain't happening. If there was some kind of assembly quality problems, looks like they were corrected for the full production run.
