Sony's Shuhei Yoshida admits Disappointment with PS4 First Party Title Review Scores

We are recently hearing of the growing mixed reviews of some of PS4's launch games specifically Killzone Shadow Fall and Knack. While Resogun ultimately got positive scores, Yoshida-san admits great dissatisfaction with the scores of the flagship titles Killzone and Knack. Yoshida says that, despite this, it should not affect PS4's launch that much. The following article probes on Yoshida-san's interview with GamesIndustry International.

Even on N4G the xbox camp talks more about Forza and Ryse in comparison to Titanfall. If I was getting a X1 I'd get Titanfall over anything.

I think Xbox One has a killer launch lineup, and Titanfalls in March next year, it is something to really look forward to.

KZ Shadowfall is the only game I'm interrested in on PS4 of all games shown, and that turned out to be a dud as evident by the poor metacritic score of 74%:

You must be living under a rock to not understand that titanfall got more than half of those awards, and it's not even an exclusive, if you actually took away titanfall awards ps4 launch exclusives actually got 3 more awards. Sony exclusives also usually get rated higher, top 50 to 30 exclusives is highest on PS3 compared to 360 and wii.

US media is biased, I know it sounds imature but is really the case.
I like how they try to place PS4 as if it has no games. Ignore multiplatform games, focus on exclusives.
The point is, buying PS4 now or 1 years from now is the same, price won't change, maybe 50 bucks, but is it worth it. 50 bucks to skip on PS4 for a year? Don't think so.
Play multiplatform games for now (if you don't like exclusives) then get ready for huge exclusives from Jan going forward.

The reason media outlets are mentioning exclusives is because those are the games that are going to drive people to want to take the jump to next gen on day 1. Sure, there's all the sports games and COD/BF. But you can play those on 360/PS3. So at launch those exclusives are what differentiates the Xbox One and PS4.

People like me, I don't really care, I like being a first adopter. So I'm waiting for my PS4 to be delivered tomorrow. As a media outlet though, you have to look at all the angels and ask yourself. Is spending 400-500 dollars REALLY worth playing Killzone and Knack, or Forza and Dead Rising.

If not, as you suggested, it might be better to wait until January or even a little after that to make the jump to next-gen consoles.

Polygon are extremely biased, MS could have no exclusives at launch and polygon would say they have better exclusives. However, regardless...MS have had the better launch lineup for months, especially after DriveClub got delayed. Deal with it. Don't deny it. We all know Sony has a better lineup next year. i've been saying Knack looks like crap for months, why? Because it looks like a poor, slow paced action adventure. Uninspired gameplay. It deserves those score. Ryse is confirmed to play like crap. Killzone is falling apart, they didn't know what to put in new, so they stuck in Slow mo and see through walls? Really? Dead rising, I never liked them for various reasons involving boring and repetitive. Now, Forza has always been a good racer, not as good as GT. But still good. Killer instinct just looks awesome. KZ has always had it rough. Halo games comes out with very meh graphics that play like every generic shooter ever made: "10!!!". Killzone games come out with amazing graphics and have an unmistakable feel to them: "There's nothing unique about it...7". I don't get it. Well I DO get it...it's payola...but I don't get why gamers are so easily fooled by it.

My dirty secret: I personally don't really like Halo OR Killzone. But I have played both series and Killzone has always had more going for it IMO. Halo...even the new ones...looks and plays like PC shooters from the 1990s.

Two sensible points I'd like to make:

1.) These are launch titles. They're nothing more than slightly optimized versions of things we've already seen this generation. In two years PS4 games will be blowing our friggin' minds, once devs have a full picture of where they can really go with the hardware

2.) When a game or franchise you like gets a lower review score than you expected, It shouldnt hinder your enjoyment of said game. And If seeing your favorite game or console exclusive get a low score gives you the same feeling that you get when Your team makes it all the way to the championship and loses, then you are playing games for all the wrong reasons.

I expected this. So many of the titles are yearly IPs that don't even require the added hardware power. I mean you look at a review by Totalbuscuit and he's just laughing at how the game has such steep requirements for the same gameplay with horrible textures in the latest CoD.

Sooooo glad i cancelled my PS4 preorder a few weeks ago. THEY HAD ME WITH THAT PRESENTATION WITH THE LAUNCH DATE. I had my preorder with amazon seconds after they announced it. But the games here are just DISMAL. ALL YEARLY CASHGRABS and only ONE solid first party game which apparently is only a 74% or slightly below average.

I'm VERY DISAPPOINTED with the launch window they chose instead of holding back for 2014 for games like watchdogs and other first party titles. I will be waiting for a bundle deal if I'm still playing games.

I might decide to build a PC instead or just quit the hobby entirely. Leaning towards being done with it entirely. Dark Souls 2 will be a good game to go out on.

Yeah, using reviews for safeguard from actually bad games is fairly good way to go.

Many of the 60%+ Meta-score games are actually pretty good. Maybe not worth their full value, but then again very few games are.

Different situation here. You go to a site like ign and you will see GHOST 8.8 and shadowfall/BF4 8. Does that makes sense to you ?. If killzone is 8 then call of duty should be 5 for a next gen game. I'm still not convinced KZSF is only "good" and not great. Guerrilla has addressed pretty much every problem with it (aim lag, color palette, etc) yet reviewers still find something to pick at despite many saying its the best KZ yet. I don't think that any core gamer should really place too much weight on review scores.

There have been quite a few cases recently of games being reviewed lower by "journalists", but then have a great critical reception by fans.

I know that I'll be enjoying my PS4 games later this year - and I don't need a reviewer telling me I won't.

Don't worry Yoshida, it's a marathon, not a sprint. We know games from Naughty Dog and Sony Santa Monica and others are coming. Plus, with the ease of development, developers like Square Enix can no longer say "ohh, but HD Towns are too hard and costly"! If they do, we can truly label them as incompetent and lazy developers who no longer have any of the glory they had from their years as Square.

Anyways, since PS4 reviews are now dropping and Xbone reviews are coming next week, I predict at least an 8.5 for Ryse from the highly reputable and respected Polygon! Just you wait, sir Gies will be talking about how the gameplay is miles ahead of the Batman Arkham series, and how the graphics are so crisp and smooth that he says 900p is the best thing ever, and surely beats any of those ugly 1080p PS4 games. Also, Ryse > God of War in terms of setting and aesthetics.

I never buy a game based on reviews I buy what pleases me not listening to someones opinion. Like the killzone shadowfall review. They used a guy for the review who does not even like killzone at all.

Reviews have been so skewed now lately anyway. They are just trying to push out reviews for hits. I've disagreed with the majority of reviews and will find out myself when I pick up both Knack and Killzone:SH.

Reviews said Battlefield4 was GREAT, but guess what? I just returned that buggy, crashing, piece of crap for my PC. Why didn't reviews tell me that the piece of trash crashes almost every damn game? (No its not my PC)

Remember reviewers are given early access by the companies. This means the companies have to like you. Your better off getting reviews from average gamers who play the game and a month later write a review.

If Knack didn't get good scores, then it didn't get good scores. Don't make a fuss about it. People only seem to care about scores when they are low and start saying they're full of s*** and it's biased. Who cares what these reviewers have to say about the game. I am tired of hearing these people. If the game looks fun to you don't let a review sway you, play it for yourself, its the only way you will ever know.

Lets take KNACK it got horrible reviews, because its almost like a ton of games back in the day, they did not say that but they hinted at all the same things old games did. Having to react to player animations for attacks, timing attacks etc. Don't let someone else JUDGE4U!

In my opinion, the right time for buying PS4 is when Naughty Dog or Sony Santamonica announce a new game.

No one should ever rely on a review score. There have been times where i loved a game and it was seen as a "bad" game. Everyone should try games, you never know what you might find.
On a personal note however, i've chosen to wait it out on these consoles. Once i see more games i'd like to play i'll get them both, but tbh these launch linups aren't pretty. I'll stick to current gen and my PC till more games worth playing come out.

He never expected it to be a killer game. He actually said he expected it to score around a 70 on metacritic. I think the one he was most dissapointed with was KZ. If I was Yoshida I wouldn't sweat it. If COD outscores BF4 and KZ then you know something is broken when it comes to how journos review their games.
By the way Cerny helped create some of the best platformers in the history of console games...Don't know why you're insuating that Cerny isn't a top tier dev. I honestly think that despite what Yoshida said that Cerny had to focus his attention elsewhere, and because of that Knack suffered.

It happens, no one should take any review score seriously even if a game gets a 10, its what you think that matters. Its annoying when sites nip-pick the crap out of one game and not do it to another sure, but should that really effect your gaming experience and what you like in a game.

Looking at the grand range of reviews I'm pretty happy with my launch purchases of Knack, Killzone: Shadow Fall, Battlefield 4 and Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. Launch titles are never 10/10's.

The worst reviews have consistently been coming from Polygon, which have notoriously always given PlayStation Exclusives low scores in order to stand out while preaching a holier than art thou to everyone else.

I dont know if you seen the reviews on Ryce but it got a bad score based on the gameplay. Of course launch games will be a little lower then expected but the technology will advance and once developers get more time with the ps4 it will me a amazing system. just look at the ps3 when it launched with its games and then look at the end of the generation its a huge improvement. I will be getting Killzone and NFS when i get my hands on a PS4. But seriously looking at xbones line up im not impressed.

I never put too much into reviews. Afterall, they are just one person's opinion and we never know what might be influencing that opinion. I mean, beyond the fanboy rage, how do we know their dog didn't die the day they wrote the review? Maybe they caught their spouse sleeping around? Us readers have no idea. Plus, there are games out there that a lot of people say are amazing, like The Walking Dead, but I'm not into that kind of game, so I would say it sucks. How am I suppose to know if the reviewer is even a fan of the genre he is reviewing?

That's why I'm really liking the Twitch broadcasting feature, because I can actually see the game in action. I'm not playing it myself, but I can get a general idea if it appeals to me or not. To me, that's better than any review I could read.

Knack. I tried it out at a Best Buy. And although it is didn't seem like the greatest game ever, I did not see it belonging in the high 50's on metacritic.

The Journalist just wanted free consoles and games. Lets face it, they are human like everyone. They pick sides and favorites like everyone. They are the middle man just looking to hang around with the real people that count, the Developers. Everything they report is all both opinion and fact. I was expecting Knack to get higher and I don't understand why it didn't, it looks fun to me and I'm still getting it. Killzone got good to great scores, so can people stop acting like it's bad or average. It got mostly 8s and a couple 9s.

Why do gamers always expect a 9 or 10 all the time or otherwise they think the game isn't good enough? An 8 is a great score and is a game well worth playing. Even a 7 is a good game worth playing. We don't do this with movies. There are plenty of very good, excellent movies that get around an 8, even a 7. I'm very happy if a movie I like gets around an 8.

I think we need to start looking at 8 as a worthy score more, and even a 7, and stop demanding a 9 or 10 all the time. There's quite a few games that have received a 9 or 10 that I think shouldn't have.

Killzone is fine,

Killzone 2 was a beautiful looking game, but the gameplay wasn't too great but it was definitely more than a decent game. I skipped number 3 imo it wasn't much of an improvement over 2.

For me last gen was all about uncharted mgs, heavy rain and go3 for ps3. all of the other exclusives weren't my cup of tea.

I love my third party games so this time around im purchasing the ps4 first :) less expensive way to experience the most out of gaming.

Ok so it's not the master piece that Uncharted or TLOU are but that's still a great score for a launch title.

If was rushed to be a "day one" release and on new hardware. I think the devs should be proud.

Day one purchase for me.

Plus I've read a heap of reviews and there seems to be a huge discrepancy between scores. Everything from a 5/10 all the way to a 9.5/10 and everything in between.
