Reports of PlayStation 4′s not working surfacing already

There are a few reports coming out from customers who have already gotten their hands on a PlayStation 4 of their consoles malfunctioning, and one not even working at all via Reddit and NeoGAF.

Also, as consumers, we need to keep in mind that there is about a 11% failure rate in electronic devices. I always think of the Templar Knight from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade saying "Choose wisely" when I grab any electronic device from a shelf.

Boot up PS4 without Hard Drive.
Turn off PS4.
Put hard drive back in
Boot up hard drive
Automatically installs firmware

the tacobell guys may have the wrong update since the final updates went live just after they received their console. anyhow if one of the journalist who got a free ps4 has his/hers break down knowing what gaming journalist are like you can bet they will talk about. if that does happen that's when alarm bells will be ringing imo they got their copy after the final update was out

Hardware failures happen at launch, buying an XB1, I expect a few dodgy units when Microsoft launches too.

Immediate hardware failure rates are huge on all consumer electronics, launch or old. The only time we talk about it is at launch or if failure rates past launch are beyond the norm, such as was the case with the Xbox 360.

The average failure rate for the first four years of use is actually 15%. You read that right, 15%. Most failures tend to happen closer to acquisition, which is another reason people freak out at console launches. Mass, simultaneous acquisition, makes it seem like "almost everybody" is having a problem.

Cross your fingers when you buy, not just at launch, but always. About 1 in 7 of us end up shaking our fists at the heavens screaming "WHY?!?"

You're right to an extent but it's because of how many people had to get multiple replacements for their 360s. The average number of replacements for the people I know
is 3-4. People don't forget so quickly and yeah, that will lead to an exaggerated reaction to launch issues with the Xb1. ESPECIALLY, if the issues are heat management related.

As I said in my post, motherboard failure rates are about 15%. I've worked in that industry and I can guarantee that average is real. Both systems will have tons of failed machines as always, hopefully not at the height of 360's reportly as high as 50% failure rate though. If that happens, give up on reading about anything else for awhile.

It appears this is due to a faulty HDMI port that didn't allow a stable connection of the cable to the console.

I know everyone is excited to be getting their PS4 (or any new in demand electronics ) but I can see people trying to hurry and connect their PS4 in and start playing. While being in such a hurry, jam the HDMI cable upside down and mess up the port in the process.

I am not saying this is the case here, but it is possible, nobody knows, so let us just wait and see? Haven't seen any videos for proof that it happened so I'll be optimistic.

Hardware faults happen but it's not particularly welcome when it happens to you. You spend a substantial amount of money on a piece of hardware and you should expect it to work out of the box.

Meh go by the youtube reviewers. All of them love the ps4. And most of us are going to love it. As for failure rates it can happen to you. But be smart and get it from the right retailer. I went with amazon because anything I've ever gotten from them be it kindle fires, or normal products if something werid happened with them. I call them and they send me a new one or issue a refund after asking a few simple questions any re re can answer. You simply send your messed up item back and that's that. I know when you buy at launch there's a risk of that..we all know. So if some of them fail...don't wine about it.. It happens. No machine or human is perfect. It's how you handle your broken item and who you deal with that makes it up to you.

Here is my issue. The person post it then the person who wrote The article states their ps4 didn't work either. This is not by chance. Now if it doesn't work at all then big problem but if it can't load the update then tomorrow it'll be fine. But I swear everyone was saying the ps4 didn't need an update to work. Last year Samsung shipped me a TV that didnt work. I sent it back and got another. Millions of units have been produced. Some probably got damaged in shipping. Some probably left the factory defective. Why is this news? Consumer electronics are among the most unreliable products on the planet.

so far there has been reports of one console doa the rest are hdmi issues. About a hand full of reports all together out of the thousands who already have there consoles early. I aint got no worries. This is to be expected when you buy a launch console. I had my ps3 since launch and survived the early hiccups other people was reporting and hopefully its the same with my PS4. You will see reports of faulty consoles when the X1 launches too.

According to IGN their EARLY ACCESS PS4 has some technical issues as well as a Guy named Aaron who got his PS4 early.

What's happening right now with PS4 is no different from what has happened at every other system launch in the history of video games. The only difference is that social media has blown it up to make it seem like it's WAY worse than it really is. I believe 8% is considered the standard "acceptable" failure rate for new consumer electronic devices. Based on the number of PS4's that have gone out thus far and the number of reported problems, I believe that percentage right now is around 4%! If you're going to be an early adopter, you have to accept the risks. Just buy an extended warranty and protect your investment. Otherwise don't be an early adopter.
