Watch Our Exclusive Teardown of the PlayStation 4

You can’t have a PlayStation 4 until the middle of November. But you can take a peek inside.

In the video above, Sony engineering director Yasuhiro Ootori tears down the PS4, Sony’s effort to reclaim its spot at the top of the home gaming world. In the world of consumer computing — and game consoles in particular — the teardown is a coming-out party of sorts, and this needed the full treatment, including two cameras and an interpreter to translate Ootori’s commentary into English.

Finally we gonna see what is inside this beast of a machine :)

Edit: just finished watching the video...An engineering masterpiece.

I can't think of many companies that would show you how to open their hardware let alone before launch. This is one reason I love Sony they make it very easy to open their equipment.

@Eonjay I only see one fan? he states it is 85mm which is small for a fan. The smaller the fan the more noise (usually) BUT with the processor only clocked at 1.6ghz paired with efficient voltage control I am sure the thing is near silent.

Love the 16 modules of 512MB GDDR5 memory. This machine was amazingly designed.

Also, looking at the size of those fans, and heat-sinks... I think its safe to say that this thing won't be overheating on anyone.

After seeing the space that the power supply occupies, I can't help but wonder what is in the XBOX that makes it that large.

mewhy323821d ago

Wow. what an ingenious design. Simple, powerful, no powerbrick. Awesome.

@Thevariance

Not only that, what completely baffles me after watching this video is how the heck is sony able to fit all that tech in such a small case and be 30% smaller, 50% more powerful and $100 cheaper than the xbox one????

What the heck does sony know that microsoft doesn't?

Moz3821d ago

It's quite a deep fan so should be ok. They've also got things in the right order blowing the air through the main heat sink and then the power supply.

The only concern re the over heating that has been hinted at is that spec sheet shows an operating temp of 5 - 35 degree (for anyone who still confused by this that's the range of room temps it can operate in not the CPU temp) which seems a little low, so you definitely don't want to have this in a confined space. And summer time in countries with a warm climate could be interesting. But in most situations it should be fine.

if there's one area where Sony knows their sh!t, it's console hardware design.

Looks like the PS4 is no exception.

Can't wait to see later iterations of it. The slim versions will be interesting to see :P

ZodTheRipper3820d ago

^No surprise after 4 console generations and hundreds of different models and prototypes :D

It's really a technical masterpiece and everyone responsible for it can be proud of that.

I agree. One hell of a machine.

Now what I need are reviews of various HDD/SDDs to see if there any difference in load speeds. I want to upgrade my computer SDD to the Samsung EVO drives and drop a Pro in the PS4. If it's worth it ofcourse. 20-30% load increases are worth it imo.

Does this post needs an NSFW warning? :P

majiebeast3821d ago (Edited 3821d ago )

Yeah its console porn.

obliteratorx13821d ago (Edited 3821d ago )

Amazing design. Awesome. This is how you design a beast of a console. Hats off to Sony.

quarkist3821d ago

Oh boy, it is lovely to watch all the real hardware inside :-). I like the fact that the power supply is built in, and elegant cooling system. Five stars!
