Digital Foundry- Face-Off: Battlefield 4

EG:Just what kind of graphical leap is the upcoming generation really bringing us? Of course, years lie ahead for studios to tap into the fullest potential of the PS4 and Xbox One, but right now, launch window titles like Battlefield 4 give us the clearest barometer of where technical progress is being made. A cutting edge shooter that presses the 360 and PS3 formats harder than most with sandbox-style maps and destruction physics, it's inevitable that the next generation versions deliver more than just resolution and frame-rate boosts. Indeed, the overhaul is remarkable at points, though DICE still plays to the older hardware's strengths to deliver impressive results.

Once again the PS3 recomended over the xbox 360

ZodTheRipper3816d ago

Not surprising since most developers are pretty familiar with the PS3 by now.

FamilyGuy3816d ago (Edited 3816d ago )

What are those lines appearing on the right side of the 360 video? Is that a df f up in video capturing or are those really on the 360 version? They're all along the right side of the above video, they streak out and it's most noticeable when they go over the gun.

LonDonE3816d ago (Edited 3816d ago )

@FamilyGuy
the lines are to show when the 360 version is tearing, so whenever the game has any screen tearing the lines appear so its easy to see!

Also in the bars at the bottom you see lines to signify the screen tearing!

Its amazing that the PS3 version doesn't tear and still has a better frame rate!
Its one of my pet peeves with 360, the god awful screen tearing on most games is terrible!
PS3 first party games don't tear for the most part since they triple buffer them.
Either way the PS3 has come into its own the last few years for multi plats.

I have always preferred my PS3 over the 360!
Its just a shame most third party devs were lazy early on and so gave PS3 lazy ports!
Skyrim on PS3 was just criminal!!!

FamilyGuy3816d ago

Lol oh ok, that's funny, their lines are distracting me from the actual imperfection (screen tearing).

I don't watch enough of these to know they that, thanks LonDone +b for being Helpful

mewhy323816d ago

Well this is to be expected. I mean the PS3 version of the BF3 was better too. Now that DICE has a grip on the CELL they are better able to take advantage of it's power and aid in the graphics functions. Xbox is weaker in the CPU area and can't really rely on these resources.

UltimateMaster3816d ago

There isn't much of a difference between them, unlike the PS4 Vs X1. Now you see a huge difference on third party games as well (Not just first party).

vigilante_man3816d ago

Oh dear. Wish I had not downloaded the XB1 and PS4 videos yesterday before watching this. Both look awful in comparison. It is also harder when both versions are on the screen at the same time.

I never noticed much difference here.

What surprised me was the huge difference between PS4 and XB1. It is very stark. I am used to 360 fans bragging about extra 2% performance boost or PS3 fans bragging about exclusives. The PS4 does stand out so much more.

But both XB1 and PS4 are worlds above the 360/PS3 versions.

It took 6 1/2 years tho lmfao.

vigilante_man3816d ago

Whereas this time it took 6 1/2 seconds!!

angelsx3816d ago (Edited 3816d ago )

Anyone notice input lag on ps3 or just me?

ABeastNamedTariq3816d ago

How can you see input lag if you can't see the controller?

angelsx3816d ago

AbeastNamed it's not just me professor.Check this http://m.youtube.com/watch?...

Ju3816d ago

Ha ha ha! You serious? Who ever made the video solves the "lag" by switching to 480p??? Wow...what a joker. LOL

wishingW3L3816d ago

most likely the Vsync's the one causing the input lag.

Ju3816d ago (Edited 3816d ago )

First...I can't notice it...an what causes it, is the additional frame which comes with using triple buffering. So, latency is 1/3rd higher than double buffering. About 30ms. Nothing what you can do about it unless the game can predict input 60ms in advance.

SilentNegotiator3816d ago

@angelsx

Do explain to the professor how he was supposed to know that you were talking about a completely unrelated video...

ALLWRONG3816d ago

"Once again" Don't you mean finally? Because most multiplats have looked better on the 360 this entire gen.

mrmarx3816d ago

if only the 360 had cloud power

aquamala3816d ago

Yes if you ignore the other platform that's also part of this faceoff

FunkMacNasty3815d ago

Regardless of which console flag people wnat to fly, if we're arguing about which CURRENT GEN conlsole BF4 looks better on, you're all grasping at straws.

BF4 looks like a dried turd on the ps3 and 360, simply put. I'm not all that upset about it, because Battlefield has been my prefered online shooter this gen, but graphically speaking it looks like a launch title, graphically.

It would make more sense to compare the ps4/XB1 versions where there is a clear resolution difference.

There's no one-upsmanship to be accomplished comparing the current gen console versions of BF4 -- it's like saying "my awful looking turd looks better than your awful looking turd"

After Bioshock Infinite, Tomb Raider and GTA V comes Battlefield 4 recommended on PS3 :D

Best year for PS3 indeed.

Agent20093816d ago

Except that GTA V performs better on Xbox 360.

DeadManV3816d ago

What shit are you smoking?

Agent20093816d ago

Fanboys being fanboys, I reckon.

From the Eurogamer article: "The 360 does command a minor advantage in frame-rate during synchronised play".

But I guess it's easier to simply bash my post, all because I'm stating a fact that's denying the advantage of a PlayStation console. Right?

Ezz20133816d ago

"""Fanboys being fanboys, I reckon."""

true you are shown how being a fanboy can blind you from the truth

""The 360 does command a minor advantage in frame-rate during synchronised play, but for shoot-outs and high-speed hurtles down the city streets, the PS3 can sometimes pull ahead in these metrics - though the difference is rarely perceptible either way. Since all else is identical across the board, the PS3 version is recommended on the grounds of image quality if you have the option""

***the PS3 can sometimes pull ahead in these metrics - though the difference is rarely perceptible either way. Since all else is identical across the board, the PS3 version is recommended on the grounds of image quality if you have the option***

Skips3816d ago

lmao! Agent2009 just got owned. XD

According to Digital Foundry. There are just more advantages when it comes to the PS3 version than just a slight "minor advantage in framerate".

"it's apparent that the PS3 version has an undeniable advantage in one area: even to the naked eye, ground textures on 360 are blurred as a result of what appears to be unoptimised asset streaming. Glitch or not, this basically amounts to concrete and grass textures appearing fuzzier beneath the feet of Trevor, Michael or Franklin, while the PS3 version's remain crystal clear."

"but for shoot-outs and high-speed hurtles down the city streets, the PS3 can sometimes pull ahead in these metrics - though the difference is rarely perceptible either way."

"the PS3 version is recommended on the grounds of image quality if you have the option"

"It's close, but PlayStation 3 is our preferred platform for this game."

starchild3816d ago

Guys, he said GTAV "performs better" on the 360 which refers to frame rate and is backed up by the Digital Foundry analysis you guys are quoting. He didn't say 'looks' better.

"The 360 does command a minor advantage in frame-rate during synchronised play".

What he said was technically correct.

MysticStrummer3816d ago

Wow Agent. Calling someone a fanboy, then resorting to selective quotes and having the nerve to make a sarcastic comment about facts. Classic.

FamilyGuy3816d ago

Didn't the 360 version have extra frills on the palm trees in GTA 5? PS3 won that?

Haven't really been following that game as far as performance and visual comparisons go but I do recall the PS3 version was missing some small stuff in a couple screen shots.

DarkLordMalik3816d ago

PS3 wasn't missing anything. Just the palm trees were of slightly lower quality on PS3 but its not like you will be notice that much. Digital Foundry gave the nod to PS3 in the end.

Software_Lover3816d ago

You guys/gals can see a difference between the two versions?

MasterCornholio3816d ago

Theres barely any difference between these two versions. On the other hand theres more difference between the XBOX One and PS4 version especially when it comes to the sharpness of the image and the jaggies.

pixlz3816d ago

aside from minor lighting differences i see, the frame rate holds just a little steadier on the PS3.

Really though, if you have both systems and are playing multiplayer, is there any doubt people will get the 360 version?
Cross Game Chat is the winner for this generation. Has nothing to do with visuals.

Next Gen on the other hand...

MasterCornholio3816d ago (Edited 3816d ago )

I completely agree with you. Between current gen systems there´s barely any difference however between the XBOX One version and the PS4 version there´s a bigger difference.

Cueil3816d ago

are they using the HD packs? That looks horrible

BTBuck13816d ago

that 360 version is stuttering like an epileptic

Hufandpuf3816d ago

I honestly see no difference.

Battlefield 1, Hardline, BF4 Servers Are Being Taken Offline by Cheaters; EA Silent on Issue

Cheaters & hackers have been causing grief on Battlefield 1, Hardline & BF4 servers, with nonstop DDoS attacks among other things. Unfortunately, EA has remained silent about it.

-Foxtrot749d ago

Course they are silent, they are hoping people flock to 2042

gamesftw250748d ago

Maybe it was a inside job then haha.

jeromeface747d ago

wouldnt be the first time, titanfall 1+2 anyone?

PapaBop748d ago

Not even if they paid me.. EA always do this with old games with less money potential, if this was Ultimate Team, they'd address and sort it faster than stories could spread. Why invest time in their products when they will just dump it in the following years? Then again EA never could see the forest for the trees.

Inverno748d ago

I imagine after those games were given out for free a couple months back through Amazon, anything that makes people go to 2042 is a plus for them

XiNatsuDragnel749d ago

They want people to go on 2042. My theory

excaliburps748d ago

Nah. I think they can't do anything about it or they want to sink money into fixing it.

Pudge102888748d ago (Edited 748d ago )

EA owns all BF servers so yes, they can do something about it but they refuse to because they dont want ppl playing their old games instead of the new one. Its EA we’re talking about here

pr33k33748d ago

if this happened in 2042, they'd have something to say. which is weird, considering battlefield 1 has more players on steam right now.

Pudge102888748d ago

Its so obvious that EA is doing this or hired ppl to mess up the games so that we’d be forced to have just 1 Battlefield working.

FPS_D3TH748d ago

Honestly it’s probably the devs themselves. They did an update to bf4 way back that kinda made assault rifles doo doo in hopes that people would flock to BF1 cuz BF4 was too perfect

There's a bunch of great shooters on gamepass; both legacy and new.

A recommendation I have is a work in progress preview title called Anacrusis. It's a lot of fun, and has a cool aesthetic.
