Battlefield 4: Which is better - Xbox One or PS4?

Videogamer: One of my main criticisms of Battlefield 4’s campaign was that it did little to make the player feel as if they were a part of a much bigger war. But in reality, they are: simply by coming along for the ride, every Battlefield 4 player is a combatant in a far more significant battle. And with the console war heating up as we edge closer to the next-gen launch, DICE’s shooter may end up being a key factor in the war between Microsoft and Sony, with the PlayStation 4 version displaying a clear advantage over the Xbox One.

XB1 has the worse resolution at 720p, but the inferiority doesn't stop here, the jaggies make small objects look horrible also the lighting is #@$%d up.

PS4 has a smoother images because of the higher resolution, also better AA and lighting engine, and according to multiple previews today this version is close to high end PC settings.

Xbox loses all detail in the shadows. It's way too dark due to the increase in contrast.
PS4 matches the PC version more closely in this regard. It also has better AA, ambient occlusion and runs at a higher resolution.

They probably had to a little bit from 1080p to 900p which is a big shame. Dice should have utilised all that ps4 power and not worry about parity at all.

Looks like this gen PS4 is going to be multiplatform king, which for me is pretty damn ideal considering some shocking ps3 ports this gen. PS4 holds up the frame rate the best and at a higher res.

If 900p still isn't acceptable....there's always Guerrilla ;P.

People acting like its PS4 compared to XBOX 360. Yea, I could see some minor differences but the game was still beautiful on both systems. That alone wouldn't deter me or anyone from buying an X1. Some of these comments are just ridiculous. If you didn't see the compare and just saw the X1 version, everyone would be saying how amazing it looks. I'll admit I noticed the differences, but when the screen was cut in half and you saw both systems side by side, it was tough to see the difference until they slowed it down and took snap shots comparing the two images. Lets stop acting like it was this huge, insane, ridiculous difference.

I can't speak for decrypt but I can comment on price of my rig I built nearly 2 years ago. It ran me around $3k. I didn't even look into how it can run Battlefield 4 since I prefer console gaming (plug and play) to PC gaming. I just built a gaming rig on a whim cause I wanted to play iRacing on my FFB rig.

I would be surprised if my rig (dual GTX 590's) can run BF4 at 1080p on max settings. I should download the demo and test it just to see. But again I rarely even use my gaming rig and have no interest in playing BF4 on it. I only power it up when Steam is having ridiculous sales on games I've already played on the consoles. I like to compare them just out of curiosity.

I'm getting the PS4 version, but I honestly didn't see that much of a difference. I guess it's due to the compression and them uploading in 720p. This will be one of those things you have to go to a Best Buy or Gamestop to see the games side by side to really appreciate. Regardless, both versions look fine.

Superior would suggest the difference is large, like a Corvette is superior compared to a Mustang. But to suggest the PS4 is superior based on some minor details, I don't think you know what the word means. PS4 compared to Xbox 360, superior. The PS4 version seems to be a downgraded version of the PC build yet the X1 is entirely different in more ways than one.

The Digital Foundry videos comparing the X1 and PS4 versions to the PC are worth a watch. It will open a lot of peoples eyes because some on here would type that the X1 version looks better than the PC version based on their logic.

They did say they wanted to delay the game so they could polish it but decided against it, instead they are patching the xb1 version at launch to fix the AO and some other things which they couldn't comment on yet.

This one better proves my point, the Xbox One version used post processing to boost the contrast and sharpness to compensate for it being 720p. They did the same techniques with the PS4 to have a better comparison. After those tweaks, it's easier to see that the PS4 is the better version, but that does not take away from the fact that the Xbox One version looks great as well.

Dude, high contrast does not equal "crisp".

PS4 preserves more detail in shaded areas, much like the PC version. Whereas on XBO, that detail is gone, it's just black.

No dude. Digital foundry use some picture correction ( sharpening filter ).
Dark10x (who another poster said works for DF) has surmised that DF used their own capture device but didn't have time to really configure it properly for the new systems, while the other outlets all used the same Elgato capture device that DICE provided. That's why DF's [comparison] is the only one that looks massively different.

This what happen when you don't compress the video capture so heavily as YouTube does. PS4 has a sharper image, better frame-rate keep, higher resolution(which results in less jaggies), AO and AF use. Overall it's just a better game on PS4.

To those of you thinking that Xbox One looks better because" it's darker and PS4 looks washed out" then you obviously don't know what high gamma levels and crushed blacks mean. Just to prove my point clearly, go compare Xbox One version to PC. Clearly the difference remains the same, with Xbox One having just some ugly, crushed blacks levels compared to the softer, more accurate colors and contrast. Yes, it looks "darker" but that doesn't make it better. Not even close; the Xbox 360 did the same thing with it's gamma levels when scaling. Some of you are in denial so hard it's almost sad but you really need to step-up and face the music people. You have the weaker console, accept it and move. You still have Halo, still got Ryse and if you like Gears you might have that soon, too. Don't forget Forza as well. Just enjoy your console for what it is and quit worrying about how it compares to PS4. The best you'll be getting is parity if you're lucky.

these video players aren't even 60 frames and have low bit-rate, so of-course they'll look similar. Even comparing it to PS3 it would look almost the same too. But the resolution differences are pretty big and not to mention the AA which the XB1's version has none.

If the XB1 can't run a cross-gen title at the same quality as the PS4's, things are not gonna get better from here. That's for sure.

To be fair we are not seeing the game in motion, but I do know the aa and framerate is better on ps4. They say the resolution is 900p on ps4 and 720p on X1.(EA never confirmed the resolution only DF) By those pics it doesn't seem that way, but for now on how it runs from what I hear I will agree that the PS4 is the better version..

Moreover the textures in the X1 version looks sharp, the lighting is better to. May have to do with DX 11.X. That's the only way they could do it.

Dark10x (who another poster said works for DF) has surmised that DF used their own capture device but didn't have time to really configure it properly for the new systems, while the other outlets all used the same Elgato capture device that DICE provided. That's why DF's [comparison] is the only one that looks massively different.

this is the stuff that makes me laugh. zooming in on hair nap to see the diffs. there is no denying ps4 has the edge this gen, shit they pretty much had it last gen but just for 1st party. anyway, my point is the same one ive been making for a while now...that at least in the case of multiplat, the diff is one you will need to sort of "nit pick" to really find. Most people wont have them side by side and its not gonna be that serious. Now 1st parties will deff have a much clearer advantage, but that wont matter since those games have only one home. also the xbone will deff have some sexy ass 1st parties as well. think gears vs uncharted....both were sick graphically speaking but uncharted was deff a little more stunning overall. bottom line, my way of thinking leaves me no choice but to own the both, no way im missing out on quality titles from either side.

I think any games my friends play i will play on xbone, but any games my friends arent playing or that are single player will deff be played on ps4. simply put, ps4 is more powerful and it already shows...

You do get what you pay for. Resolution in games is hardly the reason I and many others, decide on buying a console. Functionality, services, exclusives, controller, OS design, social functions, etc. these are just some of the reasons people choose one console over the other.

Here's a scenario for you:

Say PS4 was released with specs lower than the WiiU, but there was confirmation that all the great exclusives such as TLOU, Uncharted, Infamous, KZ, etc. would still be developed for the system. or let's say the online services were going to remain free. Would you pass it up because it's not pumping out pretty enough games for you?

The point is that there is more to a console than the graphic fidelity of it's games. I am getting an X1, and I am getting what I pay for. I'm paying for an online service I prefer over the competition. I'm paying for the ability to play and socialize with my friends, since they are all getting X1's as well. I'm paying for a console that comes with an accessory that despite being laughed at and labeled as "gimmicky" or "useless" by many in the community, I am looking forward to using. I'm paying for a controller that I find vastly superior compared to the alternative, and I'm paying for a console who's aesthetic design overall, is much more pleasing to my eyes.

You can have your 900p vs 720p and even 1080p vs 720p and laugh all you want, because at the end of the day, I have a gaming rig that put's both consoles to shame. If it's graphics you want, then you really should be on PC, otherwise you're just beating your chest and gloating about coming in second place, and you know what they say about the person who comes in second place...

I don't buy a console strictly for games. I buy them for the social aspect of gaming, whether it's playing solo and joining a friend later, forming a party and playing together, or simply talking to each other, this is why I play console, and in this regard, X1 simply offers a better experience for me over PS4.

Now say this happens: 2 companies come out with similar systems but one is more powerful and the other is easier to develop for. At one time Sony was stupid enough to think Cell would act as a cpu and a gpu at the same time. Developers hated the idea and therefore they added a Nvidia gpu to make it easier to make games for. The idea was to get 3rd party devs to make games for the PS3 and not have enough time or want to spend the effort to make games for the 360. This obviously back fired. All the 3rd party devs wanted to work with the 360 because it was much easier to work with. In the end, PS3 was more powerful, more expensive, and more of a pain in the ass to make games with. Microsoft got a hold of the market (partially if you count the many, many systems Nintendo sold). However, Sony seems to have their ducks in a row this time, and they've listened to what developers want, as well as listened to gamers. My point being is I am a gamer. I don't want to have to deal with inconsistencies on PC with gamers having different hardware than me and that having an outcome on the game online. I don't want to have to deal with cheaters who mod the games. The fact that Microsoft has all ready admitted they did not aim to get the highest performing graphics for their system shows me they are more concerned about other things than games. The social aspect is there for PS4 as well so theres no difference. If games can look like a medium spec'd PC, off great online services like Gaikai, and attract all the 3rd party developers to make great games, PS4 is going to be the superior system this time around! Kinect is pretty useless BTW. Who the hell plays games on that thing unless your dancing like an idiot in front of the TV?!

I have seen multiple comparison vids and screen captures, and I have yet to see a definitive winner. At some parts PS4 looks better, at others X1 does, the whole time the differences being subtle. Largely, which version looks "better" comes down to personal preference.

There is one constant I have seen though, and others have agreed in articles as well, that the XO version is the one with the crisper visuals. You say the PS4 version looks sharper, yet it has been stated quite a lot the the PS4 version looks "blurrier" or "softer." I have even seen some say it looks as though the X1 version is sporting some type of rendering technique to ramp up the sharpness, which leads to crisper visuals but also makes aliasing more noticeable.

There's also the recent news that the XO version of BF4 in the comparison vids, was lacking AO (ambient occlusion) and it will be added in a day one patch.

So even in terms of strictly visuals, based on comparisons, people still are getting what they pay for, especially considering that a bulk (if not all) of the increased price does not have to do with beefier hardware over the competition, but with the inclusion of the Kinect, a device that has absolutely no effect on graphics fidelity.

The reason some people think the Xbox ONE looks better is because the PS4 uses a cheap post processing AA like "FXAA" that makes things blurry to get rid of aliasing but makes objects lose detail in the process.

Also the XBOX ONE has it's contrast blown up so it looks like it may look better but in all actuality it's an oversaturated hot mess that makes the shadows looks unreal and not natural like the PS$ plus the PS4 has ambient occlusion which makes things look realer!

okay I just finished watching the comparison video 6 times, here are the differences I saw:

-The Xbox One contrast levels and lighting effects looked a lot more pronounced than the PS4, causing the Xbox One version to look crisper in some areas. Although if you concentrate closely you'll notice that there is more detail in dark objects and shadows on the PS4 due to the more subtle lighting effects.

-There were a few more Jaggies on the Xbox One version compared to the PS4 version as well. I literally only noticed one part in particular in the scene outside that had a caravan @4:43, there were definitely more jaggies on it in the Xbox One version. Other than that (in my opinion) the difference was negligible.

-If there is indeed a resolution difference you could've fooled me because I didn't see any.

Was there some type of blowout between the two consoles? no.

Would anyone care or even notice these small details themselves if they were at home playing the games instead of obsessing over minute details? no.

Obviously because these guys are playing side by side they can tell, but how many of us are going to buy both consoles and two copies of battlefield just so we can play them next to each other? Unless you are really just a graphics whore or someone with waaay to much time on your hands you will not know the difference. At this point these comparisons are the equivalent of a d**k measuring contest.

Despite whatever this video showed I doubt it's gonna sway many people to change their purchase. We should be buying consoles for the complete experience of the systems, not just for better lighting here or less jaggies there. Whether you are an Xbox One or PS4 enthusiast I just really hope you have something else to look forward to in life besides some type of weird enjoyment of "na na na na na I told you so" over a video game console. All I know is that when I'm home actually enjoying this game, a comparison video is gonna be the last thing on my mind.

My friends and I do all our MP gaming on xbox. Actually none of my friends own a PS3. Damn shame to be honest. Some of the best games were on PS3. GOW3, Heavy Rain, Uncharted and TLOU are all great. Ok im a lil confused here... at first i viewed the article on the iphone 5s then i opened it on my desktop. The contrast at times seemed a lil dark in the pics during the comparison but when they showed the video, oddly it did not seem that dark.

But in the animated gifs, the XO seemed much sharper. I see some pointed to more pixel count as the reason. I would think it works the other way around. Even when you look at the grass, smoke etc.. it looks soft. All this was also pointed out in that article

In a real world setting on a large (40+") TV an upscaled 720p image is going to look ass compared to a 900p one. Thats a big increase in ppi. Anyone will be able to percieve the difference, not like these pokey compressed videos.

30fps youtube vids are awful for comparisons - if you listen to the people IN the videos theyre all saying how much better the ps4 (and pc) builds look.

Saying that, the x1 version is still pretty.

The amount of PS4 chest pounding in here is ridiculous. The biggest difference I can see, in both the vid in the article and the vid posted in #1.1.17, is that X1 seems to be much darker, which likely can be addressed through in game settings and/or the settings on your TV. Overall, the games look largely the same, with subtleties here and there.

At certain times throughout the gameplay, either console looked better than the other, and I do not see X1 or PS4 as a clear, undisputed winner here, especially considering framerate and features (game modes, player count, etc.) are the same on both versions. If these vids are evidence of the benefits of "50% more power" for the PS4, I'm not impressed.

That being said, this is also a launch title, so the "nail in the coffin" attitude coming from the PS4 crowd, seems largely uncalled for and inappropriate.

its not about textures, just artificial sharpening with a lot of prominent jaggies in 720p = no good and not a chance for the xbone to compete with the IQ of the PS4 version.

anyone can turn their sharpness up on the TV to get almost the same result in sharpness on the PS4 but still has less jaggies because the higher native resolution on the PS4.

PS4 colours seem to be more prominent and a bit more of a gloss on it when outside, i wonder if the users settings that were touched up at the start affected the outcome more.

If people don't compare just the opening movie, and compare the MP, the difference is obvious. The PS4 still retains lighting effects while the XBone suddenly looks more dull with flat shadow shading. And there are jaggies everywhere. The draw distance is shorter.

Both IGN and Digital Foundary "comparison" videos are generally worthless though. Look at the text. There is all kinds of compression artifacting going on and anybody that has played a battlefield game knows the graphics can be kind of sketchy, but the text is never that blurry unless somebody is playing it on a SDTV CRT, LOL!

I am seeing lot of comments on other sites that are stating the Xbox One version looks better. However, I think they are completely ignoring what the guys a euro-gamer said. The PS4 does not seem a clear in stills, but in motion the game looks better than the Xbox One version. There have also been some reports stating the Xbox One version is using some sort of image sharpening technique. These techniques often make the image pop more, but they only go so far to improve image quality and in some ways degrade the original image. The foreground on the Xbox One looks a little sharper, but the distance on PS4 looks clearer. Again though, it really matters more what the image looks like in motion and eurogamer is claiming the PS4 looks better in that area.

My opinion is that BF4 was likely rushed to make launch on these systems and is not the definite answer to which system has better graphics. Even so, I have to say the PS4 seems to have the edge. One interesting question I would have for DICE, one I'm sure they would not answer, is which system did they spend the most time on to get to the quality that is shown? They have 5 versions of this game to produce so you know that if one system was easier to port the game too, it likely got less attention. This is just pure speculation, but I bet it actually took a lot longer to get the Xbox One version looking like it does compared to getting the PS4 version to the visuals seen here. I wonder if possibly the PS4 version might have been able to hit 1080p if they had been able to spend more time with it. Again, just purely speculation, but they had to cut some development corners to get all 5 versions out in less than a month. And we have heard from other developers that the Xbox One is lagging behind.

I agree, in motion...where there are small objects (ie telephone lines) the PS$ version will probably look better. However most of the game will have large object closer to you. I think that sort of thing is where the XO seems to shine. The textures seem to be clearer and less flat on the XO. However the power lines seem to disappear.

heres my take on this right now for its resolution the xbox one appears to have better graphics because microsoft has mastered how to output graphics at 720p and the xbox one res on most games anyway are at 720p and the ps4 most of there are above 720p 900-1080p on most ps4 titles. but heres the deal though sony doesn't know how at least yet how to output a high fidelity of graphics at a higher resolution this is why some xbox one titles appear to look better than ps4 titles because microsoft has mastered 720p graphic fidelity and it is showing at it's maximum on the xbox one but this doesn't change the fact that ps4 is more powerful in reality it is if you notice most games at 720p have alot of jaggies around it's edges. in my graphics arts class if you have jaggies on your image thats points deducted so not having jaggies is the most important not high fidelity colors or textures that will come but jaggies is a major no no. so to finish this ps4 is actually much more powerful than people perceive but sony has not mastered how to output a higher fidelity of textures or color to there higher res images this is why I can't wait for santa monica or naughty dog to put out there titles because you will see high fidelity textures and color with a higher res that could go up against some pc games even but time will tell.
