PS4 Cross-Game Chat Confirmed to Support 8 Players

"As Sony's 'Perfect Day' (11/15/13) nears, more facts are coming out about the PlayStation 4 before it's highly anticipated launch day.

A recent comment by Sid Shuman, the manager of Social Media at Sony Computer Entertainment, on the very popular PlayStation Blog, confirms that the PlayStation 4 (PS4) will support up to 8 participants in a cross-game party chat."

Personally I barely ever used cross chat on the 360 but that's just me. I've always been in the camp of not being needed. When I'm gaming, I'm gaming. I don't want to be bothered by cross chat, private messages, texting or talking of any kind unless it's online with team mates. That's why my main gaming room is in the basement. To get away from people so I can have total immersion.

Oh and BTW. Don't play the "it suddenly matters card". That is the epitome of hypocrisy of MS only fans. I could write a lengthy list of things that didn't matter when the 360 didn't have them but eventually implemented them and NOW they matter. The most recent one now being exclusives. They didn't matter when MS had few and far between the last few years on the 360 but now with the XBOX ONE? THEY DO MATTER. Just look at all the exclusives MS has for the X1. /S

I have never heard Xbox Fanboys even using that. They just took it up the arse when PS fans rightfully stated the Ps3 had more games. What I have seen on a constant basis, was Ps fanboys saying Cross game chat doesn't matter. If that's the way you play games then fine. What I do when I game is do exactly what you do...when i'm in the mood. However I also have the option to chat to friends if I want, or get in a private party with them when playing the same game. The point is I can do it the way I want. If I didn't want to use X Game chat at a certain time I simply didn't. However I found that most of the time I would use X game chat.

That's because you weren't on gaming forums at all back in 2005-2008 when the x360 fanboys ran rampant on every site. "PS3 haz no gamez" and "waitstation" and "delaystation" and "only a BD-player" were the slogans if you will back then. PSN's biggest advantage was free online multiplayer.. period.. now that that's gone, how many PS4 buyers are going to NOT play the online portions of the games they purchase when the only hurdle is a paltry $50 a year?.. the answer is "very few".. and that being said, what's to brag about when it's the exact same end result when compared to XBL Gold subscribers?..

PS games are a lot more story driven that Xbox games. There are tons of people that don't play online, period. MS has always had a heavy focus on the online aspect of their games so people would feel they needed that gold subscription. PS+ is not the same thing at all.

I do agree/believe the majority will have PS+ now but Sony has many single player IPs and a lot of games worth playing for their story alone, most recently The Last of Us and Beyond two souls, well before that we had the rpg ni no kuni which had no multiplayer.Even though Ascension had multiplayer the God of War games have always been story driven as well so don't make it out like PS+ is now necessary for everyone or as if nobody would buy a PS4 without PS+.

For those people it is a great thing that Sony isn't blockading all the other cool features.

Microsoft had the option of integrating HD-DVD into their system to use for games. They chose not to do so, which some would say, led to the fall of HD-DVD. Microsoft ended up making alot of hardware modification with their later releases (wifi), don't see why incorporating an HD-DVD drive was so far-fetched. They wanted to remain cheaper at the cost of losing the format war.

Cross Game Chat on PS3 wasn't possible because Sony had already allocated much of the system RAM to game development. Even if they add it today, all games release prior to it wouldn't work. It would require the OS to use more RAM than what was originally allocated. This would have led to game freezes and crashing.

To compare that they are features added to each is true, but still apple and oranges. If you wanted to compare cross game chat with another online feature would be more suitable. My comment for not comparing them was not based on architecture, OS, etc, but more based on the fact that many on this site are going tit-for-tat....MS has this....well Sony has that times 2...but....MS has that times 3...and so on.

This is one of the features of the XB360 that i was glad that the PS3 did NOT have.

Playing a game while listening to seven people playing other games and shouting at their team-mates in unison, whom every time they actually say something purposeful to the people in the conference call they'll also disturb the people playing on the server. What a great idea.

Imagine half the people on your team in BF4 or KZSF using this function with their respective friends at the same time. It'll be mute-mania. When you play a multi-player game you should focus entirely on communicating with your team-mates, not screw around with your PSN friends. Nobody wants to hear people's casual shit while playing. The chances of this happening over PSN has just increased tenfold.

Don't get me wrong. I'm a PS fan. But this function is totally useless on a gaming console. When you want to give someone a call, you don't boot up your console and hope that they're online. You call their cell since it's always on and easily accessible. This feature will end up annoying people a lot more than it will come to any good use.

You've never had the problem of your friends talking to people on the server they're playing on while you're trying to listen to what people playing on the server that you're playing on are saying? Your friends must be quite the silent folk then. Why do they even participate in a cross-game chat?

I'm an ex professional gamer and still today a competitive NS2 player, thus i communicate with head-sets in teams on a daily basis and have done so for over ten years. I know what massive amounts of information you must take in from people speaking constantly. Even in teams of six people speak at the same times commonly. Having something like cross-game chat, with the sole purpose of speaking to people while you're in different games, truly has a scary precedence.

How does maturity factor in with this? If people are in a an eight-man conference call while doing different things, how is this not going to disturb the other people in that call as well as the people having to listen in on that call on the server you're playing?

Surely you're in a conference call to talk, actively? You're not asking seven random friends to hear everything you're saying while you're gaming just to feel more social, are you? I don't see how this function can do anything that doesn't result in disturbance.

You don't get my point. OTHER people are going to use it. People on the server i'm on are going to use it, frantically i assume. Teenagers and gangs of drunken fools not giving an F about the focus of the game and just having random conversations going.

Some you could just mute. Some games don't include muting functionality on consoles though. And even if you mute certain people, that's one less person to get important updates from about the situation on the battlefield.

Cross-game chat is madness. I hope they include a feature to automatically mute all who use it. Surely they must realize what a terrible problem with chatter this can turn out to be.

Robby, you clearly have never used cross game chat. It's main usage is linking your friends from your friends list so you only hear and talk to them, and hear nothing else. It is extremely useful while loading up with a few friends while waiting for the rest to boot up. You are only ever interrupted if you have your party chat open for anyone to join, which even if you do, it's really your friends that are being pricks just joining the party if they arnt playing the game you and your team are.
Cross game chat works wonders in muting everything else, but your party members.

Let me st you straight and others who have not used cross game chat.

When you are in a party with 2-8 people you only can hear those in your party.

So say im in a party and I am playing COD etc...I wont hear the players in COD I will hear the people in my party.

Games like halo took advantage if the function. You can join MP with your party and stay together. And you could actually see if someone was in a party in the lobby.

Im very curious how sony will implement it with the PS4.

It is a very useful tool with friends.

Its simple when you need to communicate to your team switch to game chat while playing multiplayer. Not that complicated to figure out genious no need to throw hate to this feature. As an xbox gamer i mainly use party chat when im not playing multiplayer games

If you're playing a game and others in the lobby are in chat you will not hear them. Chat is a close-ended communication. The only people who can talk AND hear are those in chat. This will actually cut down on noise pollution in lobby's. The more in chat the less talking in lobby.

I get the point you made in follow-up comments, but that's not exactly the picture you painted with the original comment.

Yes, party chat (potentially) ruins multiplayer games, because people will be playing while talking to folks who are doing something else entirely. That's really bad for any sort of strategy, which is how I prefer to play my shooters, in particular(I'm a pretty good tactician).

But you wouldn't be able to hear the others in their parties. That's what being in a party is all about.

You can't be in game chat and party chat at the same time... If they are in your party, that's it... They aren't talking to people in their game too

Man, what you are describing isn't a typical use case for cross-chat. Generally, it comes in handy when trying to coordinate gaming sessions.

For example, I use it in gta online all the time. I might come online and see that I have 2friends playing GTA single player, 2 playing GTA online, and 1 playing Nba2k14 We'll all jump in a group chat, and decide that when one of unlocks a 6 player mission, we'll join each other. After a few minutes, I unlock one, and with a single button press, send an invite to all members of the cross-chat.

It's a very useful feature. And really never plays out the way you described it. Sounds like you've never experienced it. If it wasn't proven to be useful, Sony wouldn't be implementing it.

As far as it ruining multiplayer experiences, or having to mute people that are using it, that's just not true. If I'm playing COD and one of my teammates is using party chat, I can't hear him. From my perspective, it's as if he's already muted. So I'm never forced to listen to anyone else's side conversations. As far as others ruining party chat, that doesn't happen either, as most are only open to friends or via invite.

I can see the complaint but you pick the party, so that says a lot. I would have 3 or 4 friends in a Chat, TOPS, and realistically we'd all be playing the same game because that's really the only time I want to be talking to these guys all at once. Otherwise, we're all just a phone call away.

I see this as being a far better tool to optimize voice chat for companies that seam to have issues with it in the first place. Terraria...buggy as hell on PS3 where their internal voice-chat is concerned. Defiance? Same deal, often requiring multiple sign-off/sign-on attempts simply to get it running. Sony is simply creating a backdoor for ease and I'm all for it.

When you're in party chat, you can't talk to the people on the server, only people in the party.. So no, I've never been bothered by the people in my party talking to people outside of the party, because they're not stupid. They talk to me, or others in the party.. And when I'm competitively gaming, I leave the party. That's an option that I have.

I am not forced to sit in a party that I do not want to be in. It's hard to admit when you're wrong, so I don't expect you to reply in an agreeing manner.

Never liked cross game chat, It's dumb and pointless... I hope Sony lets me block or turn it off, IF you're not in my multiplayer game why do I need to talk to Somebody? And like I wanna be disturbed with mindless chatter while playing a single player game? Well sorry i like chatting with my friends and family. using a phone while gaming sucks ass, and i don't want to completely stop playing just to talk to someone. i game quite a bit, so people calling me to chat while i'm in the middle of a game is common, i'm not going to hang up on them or stop my game completely just to talk to them, this just makes it simpler

Also...if you are playing a game that you need to talk with people in that game...at least on the 360...you can leave and join back to a party at any time. For you since you think the feature is pointless then you wont have to worry as you WONT be using it.

Rarely is it mindless chatter, it's mostly used to create a clear channel for you and your teammates (cut out the brats, racists, etc), or in between games to coordinate gaming sessions between people who are playing different games...

Which I do all the time via Hangouts on Google+. Only difference is that Hangouts supports more people at the same time AND you get video as well.

Yea I should be playing in clans or what ever but if I'm playing by my self and hop in a TDM or more complex objective based game and half my team is in cross chats will I still be able to communicate with them? As them with me? if so we will still have to hear half the other convo going on or they are completely cut off damned if you do damned if you don't kind of thing. But I do want it in our community for the people that thirst for it but I can't help but to feel I'm going to suffer from it. At some point I'm sure I can enjoy it as well but communication is very big with me in my team based games especially Killzone hopefully proxy chat will return.

If you're playing a serious objective based game, your teammates probably won't be in a cross chat. If they are, it will be one exclusive to you and your teammates, which is useful for cutting out banter from the opposing team.

In the rare event that you have a teammate who is in a cross-chat, you will not hear his conversation. It will appear to you that he is muted, or doesn't have a mic.

Over 80 million 360s have been sold yet there are only 30 million Xbox Live accounts.

Obviously there are some people who have silver. Just like there will be some PlayStation 4 owners who won't have PlayStation plus. The fact that cross game chat isn't behind a paywall means that we will be able to chat with these people.

Uhh does anybody realize that PS4 has Skype an works exactly the same as Xbox 1's Skype. Sony is more focused on actual Gaming features not bs apps that the current 9 million different smartphones or pcs have had for years.
