Destructoid- Preview: Dark Souls II feels slightly easier, but still on point

DT:I have a pretty interesting history with the Souls series. When Demon's Souls was released and I wrote up my review, many readers didn't believe that I had actually completed the game -- I had to provide photographic evidence of my character and the credits.

They said a while back they wanted to make it feel accessible for a broader audience (something along those lines) so I'm not surprised.

Hope Sony make Demon Souls 2 in the future.

It seems to depend on the player. I would expect it to be easier since I've put in 60 some hours with the original. I think I understand the mechanics now.

Other previews are still talking about how hard it is. My guess is these writers never bothered to complete the original, so of course it seems just as hard.

I hope when they said it was going to be more accessible it was more a design approach and not a pussification of the difficulty.

Other previews have said the game was harder. The beta was obviously a part of the game that wasn't harder. Honestly there is little to no chance of this dev going exclusive again. Don't expect Demons souls 2 ever. Although I personally don't know know why you want one, Dark souls 2 is the successor to this series. If it was called 'demons souls 2' it wouldn't make a difference. Whatever the devs decide to do with the series will make it's way into the game regardless of the name.

Also, the hardest part of Demons souls was getting used to the challenging gameplay, once you are used to it, it's not that hard. Imo Dark souls was harder, because it featured harder challenges for skilled players. I wonder if Dark souls 2 will go back to Demons souls or Dark souls level of challenge.

I've put 70 hours into Demons souls and 80 into Dark souls, I was very used to the Dark souls 2 beta as soon as I played it. Second nature. I noticed the rolling vulnerability too and agree about the gemstones with the author. Should be less, hope there is less in the final game

Who says they have to make it, you do know Sony owns the Demon Souls IP.

Coming from someone that as put many, many, many hours into both Demons Souls and Dark Souls I would say the game is only easier because the prebuilt characters seem a bit overpowered. On top of that, they made it so like 10k souls would get you to level 40+, if not higher. So they definitely have the pvm difficulty lowered for this Network test. I am almost certain enemies will be doing more damage per attack.

I bet it will seem easier to me than when I began dark souls. For me ng+ was much easier than ng simply b/c I had grasped the gameplay and environment. Dark Souls 2 will feel familiar to me...I am sure...but I can't wait. Also, Dark Souls isn't very hard. It just demands patience, intelligence, and fortitude. Most games do not anymore.

I played the beta and let's be honest, it was fairly easy. I'm not a Dark souls pro-player by any means and I beat first miniboss on first try alone with the warrior. I don't know if it was intended or not, but the fact is that for me and many more players the beta wasn't really challenging.

The game isn't good though.

DS2 was fine. While there was a bit of recycling assets or ideas for bosses, it was a bigger more open Dark Souls. The Fume knight boss is one of the hardest bosses in the series until Sekiro and Elden Ring were released.

The problem with Dark Souls 2 was the same problem when a different director takes over for a sequel to an outstanding movie. It typically (there are exceptions) doesn’t have the feel and vision of the previous movie.

I wouldn’t say Dark Souls 2 is terrible. Had Dark Souls 1 never been a thing and we got this, I think it would have been praised more. The problem is it didn’t have the Miyazaki touch to it and felt pretty derivative. The soundtrack is a banger though.

And it will happen in the future when he doesn’t touch them as he is planning on.

I like DS 2, might even be my favorite of the 3. But it's a hard sell, there's so many obscure things you need to do to make it an enjoyable experience. So always find it hard to recommend, but it is worth the trouble.

All the bosses are only from Dark Souls. No Bloodborne, Sekiro, Elden Ring, or Demon Souls
