New Videos Show PS4 and its UI Action, Mention that it Runs Cool After Several Hours of Operation

There have been a couple reports about PS4 demo units overheating under stress, but these are on the opposite end of the spectrum.

Two new videos surfaced from the Gamer’s Day 2013 event held in the capital of Saudi Arabia Riyadh and they show PS4 demo units in action, including a few glimpses on their UI, some bonus Driveclub footage and more.

What's more relevant is that both videos go out of their way to mention that the console ran very cool after several hours of operation in the hot environment of Saudi Arabia.

The days are going by slower than normal...PS4 will be my first time getting a console on launch day.

thrust3832d ago (Edited 3832d ago )

Dunno, articles like this do seem like damage control when it is not needed Infact they are doing more damage IMO making me think why!

Both consoles will runn great because both company's seen how it affected the 360.

Lalanana3832d ago

That light on the controller seems annoying. I hope it does not reflect on some tvs

Abriael3832d ago

debunking overblown rumors =/= damage control

thrust3832d ago

If you game close to a tv it will reflex, you can cover it it up tho but some games in the future may need it for a feature!

sevilha823832d ago

It´s not damage control when no one screwd up,it´s a valid way to put end to a rumor created by someone that is the oposite of the term "gamer"gamers love ,eat and breath videogames dispise the sistem they prefer,is it playstation, xbox or pc we should unite and discuss valid points like mature and racional people that have one love in common,videogames...

The rumor was created by a hater,an individual with a narrowminded capability, someone that was most problably not loved as a child, hope he sees the video and hate even more for that rumor just turned to sheds.

this new gen will be full of awsomeness,i´m sure their will be bad things as well but not since the mid nineties did a videogame genaration seemed so full of potencial,so lets all do what we love and end all the hate.

Peace

Bigpappy3832d ago

This is actually a video about nothing. Should submit some news on upcoming games or at least features. This is a waste of space.

Ezz20133832d ago

Damage control about what ?!
false rumors ?! -__-

do you guys even try any more ?!

AngryTypingGuy3831d ago

It kinda helps when it's not enclosed in a plastic case with no ventilation. :-/

B1663r3831d ago

It wasn't in a plastic case in this video...

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

When it overheated and crashed while trying to play Knack.

Ezz20133831d ago (Edited 3831d ago )

@B1663r

1. your video didn't show any Red light

2. your video also show that was game bug
as you can see in your video who is playing was able to go back to xbl very fast and very normal and restart the game again
the console didn't shut off

so what the point of that video again ?!

AngryTypingGuy3831d ago

One YouTube poster said, "I'm french, they say "Does the console feel hot?" in which they reply "No, must just be the game". Take it for what you will.

I'm sure both consoles have been thoroughly tested after MS's billion dollar RROD lesson.

gaffyh3831d ago

@thrust - I don't see what damage control there is in these vids??? This is just a video that the guys from Saudi have posted up, and they actually say "It feels cold", when they touch the top of the console (not in English). They also mention that the light on the PS4 is white and can change colours. The title is basically just stating what the guys said.

BallsEye3831d ago

Great but why they even mention that it runs cool after many hours just now after reports of it overheating? If It would be XO article "DAMAGE CONTROL" would be in every 2nd comment.

ShinMaster3831d ago (Edited 3831d ago )

HERE ARE SOME FACTS:

* No PS4 has actually died yet. Therefore there is no such thing as a red line "of death".

* In some instances, the PS4 was enclosed in a plastic case with poor ventilation.

* That Knack video shows a game bug, NOT the PS4 itself overheating or dying. There was NO red light and the PS4 continued to function normally.

* The PS4 does in fact run cooler than the PS3 as stated by multiple official reports including the FCC one.

* In some previews were the controller's blue light is seen on screen, the player was sitting up close to a TV which was set lower than the player's eye level and the camera was capturing this at a higher angle. So of course you're gonna see the light and everything else that you wouldn't normally see.
Even the Move controllers weren't very noticeable and you actually had to point those directly at the screen.

Besides, the light bar is cool and the only people complaining are the ones with an obvious bias.

Nothing but trolls desperately grasping at straws, devoid of all common sense.

Magicite3831d ago

yet one console will run better, and most likely its not the ONE you think of.

Foliage3831d ago (Edited 3831d ago )

The controller light is angled downward; controllers have had LEDs for some time; no one ever complained about them.

Heck, doesn't the big arse xbox logo on the xbox one controller light up?

XisThatKid3831d ago

yea how the 360 affected it, give 360 3X the amount of sales

gamer78043831d ago

@Lalanana i dunno why people disagree and vote you down, unfortunately there have been some previews where the camera angle shows the light being reflected easily and covering up part of the speedometer on drive club. I can't believe there isn't an off switch, especially when playing in the evening with not much lighting in the room its easily seen unfortunately. I might make some removable sticker to put in front of it...

ShinMaster3831d ago (Edited 3831d ago )

When a TV is set lower than the player's eye level and the player is sitting up close and the camera is capturing this at a higher angle like in some of those previews, then of course you'll see the light, just like everything else in the room that you wouldn't normally see.

Even Move controllers weren't very noticeable and you actually had to point those at the screen.

Geez, you guys lack common sense.

Abriael3832d ago

Blue light is the best :D My whole PC is lighted up with blue and it looks great :D

FamilyGuy3832d ago

Damn dude, do you speak 7 languages or something? You seem to always be the first with new news, especially from foreign or non-english speaking outlets.

The controller light is a lot brighter than I initially thought. Both looked really bright in this video though so it might just have to do with the rooms lighting or the camera taking this video.

Abriael3832d ago

@FamilyGuy: just 4, but I have a lot of very international friends :D

FamilyGuy3832d ago

xKugo3832d ago

There is nothing special about Abriael, lmao. He works for and writes articles for Dualshockers, which is why he always has the news from that site reported first on n4g. Nothing special about that, he simply knows the news before it's actually reported.

JunkieJedi3832d ago

On the controller or on the console itself?

DAS6923831d ago

The lens on the camera's exposure is set to accommodate for low light, and it seems to be locked. The lens captures MORE light to see in dark areas. (Just like the human eye) So looking at the lights on the console and the controller SEEM to be brighter, but in actuality, it's probably not that bright at all.

Heisenburger3832d ago

Nice story Abe.

Very much appreciated.

Abriael3832d ago (Edited 3832d ago )

My pleasure. I'd say if it runs cool in Saudi Arabia, all the whole "Oh my god the PS4 overheats!" hubbub is just a FUD bubble.

n4rc3832d ago (Edited 3832d ago )

Did it not overheat on video tho?

I understand some will try to spin it like the world is ending.. But you can't act like it was some made up rumor... It happened plain and simple...

Did people overreact? Probably... But its not completely unfounded like some of the bs that goes through this site ...

And on topic... Who cares where they are? Its called air conditioning.. Lol.. Its not like its sitting outside in the sun

Abriael3832d ago (Edited 3832d ago )

n4rc: the ambient temperature was speciefied to be between 35 and 38 degrees celsius. The fact that air conditioning exists doesn't mean that they have it on there.

The fact that one console that is locked into a non ventilated case and/or is used and abused during events, moved and whatnot overheats simply tells nothing, as those consoles are used in the worst possible conditions. People/sites that tried to make it into a widespread problem were disingenuous and trying to spread FUD. that's all there's to it.

BBBirdistheWord3832d ago (Edited 3832d ago )

@ abriael.

Why are we automatically assuming that this location in Saudi Arabia is hot?

It looks like this marketing event is held in a mall or public hall of some sort, which is almost certainly air conditioned.

Here's some pertinent information regarding a/c installations in Saudi Arabia:
https://www.bsria.co.uk/new...
Quote:
"Although there are some regional differences, air-conditioning products are considered a necessity and are installed in almost all buildings throughout the country."

I guess under these circumstances, the factual conclusions we can draw from this article are somewhat limited. Despite being in Saudi Arabia, we simply cannot conclude that the location was hot.

The devil is in the detail. Not saying you are wrong about the PS4 remaining cool, however, it is wrong to say that the location was hot.

As for the youtube description, can we trust it? It was obviously an amateur video made by a PS4 fan who posted it, so...

ajames3473832d ago (Edited 3832d ago )

BBBirdistheWord: "Why are we automatically assuming that this location in Saudi Arabia is hot?"

Because the dude that made the video says so. Seems pretty simple to me.

The youtube description holds more credibility than someone that wasn't there and just bring a generic article that doesn't talk about the specific place and time.

Looks like you really really want to disbelieve it, which seems to indicate that you have an agenda.

hazardman3831d ago

I dont get the whole run cooler thing in Saudi Arabia. You make seem as if they were playing the PS4 outside in the desert. Saudi Arabia one of the richest spots known.

60FPS on PS5: Unofficial PS5 'FPS Boost' mods are radically improving PS4 back compat

Digital Foundry : Whether it's via FPS Boost or bespoke software upgrades, backwards compatibility on the current-gen consoles delivered an unexpected delight - the ability to liberate older console games from their 30fps limits, running them at 60 frames per second or even higher. FPS Boost did the business for Xbox Series consoles on an impressive range of titles, but there was always the sense that PS5 could do more. It's a hunch that checks out as a range of frame-rate unlocks are available for PS5, covering many must-have games - the major caveat being that only exploitable consoles running on older firmwares are invited to the party.

darthv7294d ago

you love to see new life being breathed into older titles but damn the process to get there. It should be automatic that these work for everyone... not just those who exploit their systems. Really wish Sony and MS would keep this program going officially.

Psychonaut8594d ago

Damn this sucks. I want this shit so bad, but I’m not jailbreaking my console. And frankly I shouldn’t have to. I’m not a tech person, but is it really that hard for developers to unlock the framerate? Or would that have to be a large patch?

dveio94d ago (Edited 94d ago )

"but is it really that hard for developers to unlock the framerate?"

I guess it's not.

But it has become a profitable business if you do so.

So no one would pay for only the framerate patched to being unlocked. So studios need to offer more than that.

But this would take more time, polishing and would cost more money. So they shy away, but won't unlock the framerate, either.

That's just my personal assumption. But from what I can comprehend technically, it shouldn't be difficult to unlock framerates via a patch for older games.

... if it hadn't became a business.

RaidenBlack94d ago (Edited 94d ago )

frame-rate unlock should be free ...
We've seen many devs offer free patches and updates to pretty old PC titles, even bonuses ... so why can't devs offer the frame unlock patch for free (in consultation with the platform-producers) for a title from just a generation earlier?

Einhander197294d ago

RaidenBlack

"frame-rate unlock should be free ..."

Obviously the result of that thinking is that developers aren't even going to do it.

If they had been allowed to charge $5-10 you would see incentivized developers doing it way more often.

People just always want everything for free, but it's not free to make the patch, people have to code it then other people have to test it, and there will always be other costs involved.

If people want dollar store gaming then expect to get what you pay for.

shinoff218393d ago (Edited 93d ago )

Raiden I might be wrong but last I thought it cost money to put patches out on consoles.

As far as me paying for it, I'm not all that interested tbh. Not enough to pay for it with older games, and newer games have been pretty decent about it for the most part.

dumahim94d ago

Sounds like the modder has to go in to make changes to unlock it on a game by game basis. "Simple" enough to do it unofficially, but to have it done officially, they need someone to go in a make that change, put out a patch and put it through certification, which I believe is not necessarily a cheap thing to do. It's questionable if going through this would then give them enough sales to make it worthwhile.

Inverno94d ago

Many games still have physics tied to framerate, i think it's cause they wouldn't want to go in and do anything extra. Then there's the 10 dollar upgrades they rather charge. The problem is that there's no compromise, cause if I could mod my PS4 and all I'd lose is online play then id jailbreak it immediately. Mods have done so much for PC games and they could do the same for consoles, but manufacturers hafto be willing to compromise.

shinoff218393d ago

It's not to hard to do and there's youtube videos that break it down really well. ANyway most of us here arent able to break are console anyway due to being up to date on firmware from playing

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 93d ago
Chocoburger94d ago

Yep, this sucks having to require a jailbreak for something that should be standard in our industry by now. I learned my lesson when PS4 was jailbroken and I didn't keep a console on low firmware for years, but now I'm holding onto two low firmware PS5s specifically because there are features I'll be able to do that you can't do on official firmware, so this will pay off for me soon enough.

Jin_Sakai94d ago

It should be a sin to let these games sit and be stuck at 30fps.

EazyC94d ago

RDR 2 not getting a 60FPS patch for PS5 was a crime.
