PS4 Players Upset with ‘Dedicated Servers’ on Killzone Shadow Fall

Last week, all of the major publications ran articles titled “Killzone Shadow Fall has Dedicated Servers.” PS4 fans immediately took to the comment sections of these articles to praise this bit of news. But while most readers seemed to only catch the headline and decided to run with it, there was another group of PS4 fans who were upset by the news.

Bit late to the party but okay......

Those forums were not the only ones. If you go down the comment list on that N4G article others, who actually read the article and source material, picked up on that

nukeitall3841d ago (Edited 3841d ago )

Basically KillZone has P2P multiplayer. All the other stuff on dedicated servers is how it is run normally, on all P2P games.

So much for all the praise which turned out to be a dud!

I really thought Sony was going to put the pedal to the metal since it is first party game.

corvusmd3841d ago

It looks like their "dedicated servers" for COD are going to be the same thing being as Mark Rubin said that it would be a mix of dedicated servers and P2P for PS4

NewMonday3841d ago

@nukeitall
there you go again not having any idea about what your talking about

the servers are "dedicated" to the task of "forwarding network traffic from one player in game to all other players in game. This allows people with a slower connection or strict firewall settings to play without issues"

the bottom line is no host advantage and game stability is not dependent on a single player

ABeastNamedTariq3841d ago

"Killzone Shadow Fall has dedicated servers hosted in various regions around the world. These servers do not run the logic of the game – they only act as a hub between the clients, forwarding network traffic from one player in game to all other players in game. This allows people with a slower connection or strict firewall settings to play without issues. Almost all logic relating to you (e.g. moving, shooting and taking damage) runs on your local PS4, with only a very small portion of the game logic (i.e. mission/scoring logic) running on the ‘session master’, one PS4 in the game selected for its connection quality."

Sounds to me like traffic is handled through the servers, which allows people with slow connections to play without bogging others down.

And like other commenters said, don't a lot of games use this form of dedicated servers? What's the issue here?

As long as everything is smooth, I don't see the problem. I might be missing something.

Gozer3841d ago

Sony just doesn't have the server farms to support their games. COD:Ghosts will not have dedicated servers for the ps4 either. To hear sony fans around the web talk, you would think sony would atleast have dedicated servers for their 1st party games, I guess not. Ill be picking up an X1 and a lot of that decision has to do with MS offering every developer dedicated servers for every online game at a near free cost.Looks like Live will continue to be the best service for online MP.And that's another thing, you would think since sony will be charging for MP next-gen, they could set up some servers, atleast for their first party.

GTgamer3841d ago (Edited 3841d ago )

Riggggggggght Gozer u were defiantly gonna buy a PS4 how many people call bullshit on that i do. The MP has dedicated servers where it should really counts like every game that says they have dedicated servers and other devs would rather say that they have dedicated servers other than go into detail like GG has been doing allot so what are you going on about so far you haven't played the MP so you don't know even know how it runs smh.

MasterCornholio3841d ago

You do know that dedicated servers won't be available for all Xbox One games right?

Shows how little you know about online infrastructure with consoles.

Nexus 7 2013

loulou3841d ago

lots of times playing kz2 the game stopped because the "host quit".

i could never understand why n4g was always raving about dedicated servers on kz, when infact there wasn't any

andrewsqual3841d ago

@Gozer And yet you have no idea what you are talking about because next gen Microsoft still won't be letting all users of Xbox Live download 100gbs of games and then 30gbs every following month. They still haven't confirmed if Arcade games can finally be released over the size of the pitiful 2gb limit. Also there is a reason why Planetside isn't coming to Xbox Live. What Xbox game ever let you play online with over 50 players the last 8 years?
When all these things are matched, then please compare Xbox Live to PSN. Some people really need to open their eyes sometimes.

Mystogan3841d ago (Edited 3841d ago )

I thought Sony said they have actual dedicated servers. I guess they must have lied then if they can't even do it on one of their most successful franchise.

GTgamer3841d ago

@Mystogan how did Sony lie -_-, notice how u have a problem with lying but your console of Choice is the Xone made by the MS king of lying right now is that all you do go on PS article and try to downplay the Sony so if KZSF came out and ran beautifully with no lag will you go back to edolas.

HeavenlySnipes3841d ago

@loulou

Actually, when the session master leaves, the game actually says on screen "session master has left"

Then a new one is picked (I assume because the game doesn't stop and everything proceeds as normally)

MizTv3841d ago

as much as i like kz it looks like bf will be my go to fps

black0o3841d ago (Edited 3841d ago )

what do u hve to say about this http://www.internetsociety....

Exactly! And:
XBOX ONE has 300,000 servers around the world waiting on November 22nd @ XBOX Live.

NewMonday3841d ago

so much for those 300k so called "dedicated" servers

hutness3841d ago

Gamingcapacity3841d ago

I think GG need to clear this up. To me it sounds like the traffic is managed by the dedi. The stuff that isn't affected by connection speeds is ran locally. Isn't the traffic the most and main important thing to run through the dedi?

If it runs smoothly like KZ3 then what are people complaining about?

Does anybody know how the X1 dedis will handle multiplayer?

iamnsuperman3841d ago (Edited 3841d ago )

To be honest I don't think they need to. Multiplayer is multiplayer and it doesn't matter if it uses P2P, dedicated servers, magic..... at this stage. People don't buy multiplayer games based on that fact alone but by how it plays (though dedicated servers means no host advantage which makes things easier for playability). If GG are confident in their product they don't need to say anything. It will come up in the reviews if there are issues with their choice (remember, unless there is a specific issue, reviews come out before the release of a game)

I have experienced no issues in some games which use P2P. They have explained what they will use and a lot of us will never understand it. We will wait to see if it was the right choice

GTgamer3841d ago

Can we all play judge and executioner when the game comes damn if the game runs smoothly then why complain now but to my understanding KZSF has dedicated servers that are targeted at the traffic which should insure no lags shows up, i think @abusador explained it the best.

Outside_ofthe_Box3841d ago

***"If it runs smoothly like KZ3 then what are people complaining about?"***

It's mainly the competitive players. Nobody wants the opposing team having host advantage especially during clan matches and KZ:SF will most likely have one of the better clan systems assuming that they go back to KZ2's system. So a lot of people are going to want to play it, but if the opposing team has host advantage it kinda ruins the point of clan matches.

Interesting enough a lot of people on that forum are the same people that praise KZ2 and how much fun they had during both clan and public matches despite it not having true dedicated servers.

Muerte24943841d ago (Edited 3841d ago )

Guerilla has already cleared this up. I don't know if Iamsuperman is saying this is P2P or not but it isn't.
Here ya go.
http://www.neogaf.com/forum...

and a better explanation
http://www.neogaf.com/forum...

Pretty much every game uses this in some shape or form even TitanFall is doing this.
http://www.neogaf.com/forum...

Guerilla could have left it as "we'll have dedicated servers...", but they actually took out the time to explain it to people. To get mad about this kind of transparency blows my mind, especially when other devs just say "dedicated servers". This is no such thing as "true dedicated servers." These server are acting as hosts to mitigate "host advantage". But as with any server, the person closest to it with the lowest ping will experience less lag. This is opposed to the person who is furthest away for the server and ping is extremely high. So in short as long as you're not playing on a server like in Europe when you're in Chicago, you'll be fine.

yarbie10003841d ago

Here is how KZ uses dedicated servers and P2P

Bigpappy3841d ago (Edited 3841d ago )

@Muerte2494: Just wanted to clarify that the way KZ uses servers like a router with buffers, is not the way Titan Falls uses the cloud. They are two totally different uses of servers. Titan falls actually HOST parts of the game ON the SERVERS. There is non of that with Kill Zone. The servers are just buffers to stop slower connections from bogging down the game.

This seems to be a good setup to give good MP experiences, but that host connection is still sharing bandwidth for all in the game. So it can not match dedicated severs.

HeavenlySnipes3841d ago

Game logic is handled on your console and sent to the server. The sessions master is simply the person with the best connection to the server.

Along with sending their own game data (ie where they are positioned on the map, when and where they are shooting etc) they also send game score data to the server (makes sense, as they are the ones with the best connection, they have the most up to date scores).

Since everyone is connected to the server separately, if someone is lagging, no one will notice it except them. (For example in KZ2, you will know you are lagging because people on the map will look like they are skipping around and on their screen, you're just standing there like an idiot)

Unlike a regular P2P game like COD, your connection matters. In a regular P2P game, if the host lags, or has bad internet, the game will lag for everyone in the match (except for them because they are hosting the game)

thechosenone3841d ago (Edited 3841d ago )

A proxy server is still a server this is not P2P. Somethings are done on the server and others locally on your PS4, that does not make this a P2P system! Hit detection will be fine, no lag, no host migration. The above blog spam info is old and provides no new additional info and is simply finishing for hits.

How the f*** did this blog spam get approved? o.O

COD:Ghost will use the same type of servers but you don't see these people creating videos/articles to inform consumers about it now do you.

been posted and talked about already on N4G.

This website and the guy in the video they have some kind of agenda towards Sony and Ps4 because lately they are publishing videos which are based on nothing and he is quoting from different articles and comments without reference to the context, it means he is intentionally doing this, who is this guy anyways?
Like he is trying very hard to find something negative out of nothing.

KILLZONE 2 has dedicated server idk about KZ3 but I'm going to guess it did.
Killzone Shadow Fall has dedicated server's.

GG are wasting their time giving technical details to the ignorant people online.

They say 60fps but it may deep if something specific happen and people choose to be ignorant and call KZSF a soft 60fps. Like if no other game having the same situation will not suffer from it when we all know they will.

Please let's appreciate what GG does, they go into technical details about their games without fear so anyone can understand a little more about games. What other devs does that? Not many or any.

I'm glad I can learn about technical sides of the games thanks to GG been honest and open to anyone. We should appreciate it.

Chupa-Chupa3841d ago

I think it's fine. I doubt that they will ever have the amount of players that other shooting games have online at one time i.e. COD. It looks like they will mix up ping quality (the server would manage that portion) so not just one game has a great connection while other games only have poor connections. Makes sense.

4Sh0w3841d ago (Edited 3841d ago )

Only "Scoring running on the session master"??? Well what he quoted is pretty much how P2P works, 1 player connection acts as the host for all the game logic within a match.

Its not terrible news the game will still be fun, but dedicated servers just helps for no host advantage which improves the online experience of course I just think its ironic with so much said towards the competition that some of that passion isn't directed at actually not settling for this result, again its not a huge deal but I'd just like to know from sony why not?, instead of well its "fine". You'd think gamers would at least be asking sony why no dedicated servers for what is sonys biggest next gen launch title.

NewMonday3841d ago (Edited 3841d ago )

@4Sh0w
"Well what he quoted is pretty much how P2P works, 1 player connection acts as the host for ALL the game logic within a match"

your statement is false, the truth is..

GG:"Almost all logic relating to you (e.g. moving, shooting and taking damage) runs on your local PS4, with only a very small portion of the game logic (i.e. mission/scoring logic) running on the ‘session master’"

4Sh0w3841d ago (Edited 3841d ago )

Well that's why I said "pretty much" which means "very similar to" but not exactly as you can see right before my quote I note that
Only "Scoring running on the session master"??? with those question marks I'm wondering why something so simple like scoring is running on a "session master" instead of the whole and more importantly game logic that tends to bogg down connection=host advantage. Read carefully newmonday.

AceBlazer133841d ago

Lol Majin.
OT as far as i read connections aren't gonna be a problem which is the main reason for dedicated servers as far as i'm concerned.

Majin-vegeta3841d ago

Yo I am youtube famous now :D.

OT:People already explained how this works.Just grasping at straws.

Bigpappy3841d ago

So no real dedicated servers. Still better than straight ptp. But not as lag free as dedicated servers.

abusador3841d ago (Edited 3841d ago )

Learn how to read, this dedicated server model is used in most games that have dedicated servers and htf isn't IT "real" dedicated servers? Thy are paid servers handling network traffic, Smh Lol Host in p2p handles network traffic so htf is this p2p when dedis are handling network traffic between players and it is not reliant on crappy host ISP. Problem is some if you fanboys don't know that most games with dedis do stuff locally an server side just like this its just devs never talk about it lol

Bigpappy3841d ago

The servers are just for traffic control. Stop being so emotional over it. "Dedicated Sever", as is by most gamers, host the multiplayer games. These KZ games will be hosted by which ever PS4 in that game has the strongest connection. So it is a better P2p (PtP)

n4rc3840d ago

I find it absolutely hilarious how people try to spin p2p as the same as dedicated servers...

Way to make my morning.. Lol

arbitor3653841d ago

i have never had lag on a killzone game. dedicated servers or not, it is still going to be the best FPS at launch

Killzone After a Decade in Hibernation

It's been 10 years since Killzone: Shadow Fall arrived for PlayStation 4 early adopters, and there's no sign of another sequel.

Obscure_Observer155d ago

Sadly it was dumped by Guerrilla to focus on Horizon games only. Mainline, VR and Multiplayer.

Vengeance1138155d ago

lmao sadly? Are you pretending to have actually played the series lol Sorry bud, no Killzone on Xbox.

Cacabunga155d ago

Notellin154d ago (Edited 154d ago )

What a low-functioning reply here typical of the fanboy N4G community.

Rimeskeem155d ago

“Dumped”

I think it’s called moving on.

Barlos154d ago (Edited 154d ago )

They brought out 4 main games and 2 spin offs: one on PSP and one on Vita. That's a decent run for any series. I also understand that Shadow Fall wasn't a success commercially despite it coming out at PS4 launch, and as a big Killzone fan even I couldn't get into it, so I think Sony/Guerrilla could see it was time to move on.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love another Killzone game in the vein of KZ2 but it's just not happening. Hell, I'd even take a remake or remaster of the first 3 games.

I'd hardly say it was "dumped" though, it spanned 3 console generations and 2 handheld generations.

1Victor154d ago

@obscured:”Sadly it was dumped by Guerrilla to focus on Horizon games only. Mainline, VR and Multiplayer”

Happily it was dumped by Guerrilla to focus on Horizon games only. Mainline, VR and Multiplayer( edited to reflect the writer true feelings and allegiance)
Kill zone was a FPS far ahead of its glitched competitors with nauseating bad camera angles, 10 years old screaming curses like a drunk sailor and bot aiming assist.

ChasterMies154d ago

“Sadly”?

The Horizon games were among the best games of all time. Killzone Shadowfail wasn’t.

Shane Kim154d ago

True, but damn the memories of KZ2 multiplayer. Still no MP as fun as that to this date.

Mr_cheese154d ago

Dumped and shelved are two different things

Tacoboto154d ago

I loved the KZ2+3 campaigns and MP in 2. There could be so much more done with the franchise. Horizon although good, I wish they'd go back to this wonderful IP. Take a break from Horizon please.

Flawlessmic154d ago

Agreed dude, I would absolutely love a reboot of the series, one can only hope that either resistance or killzone makes a return.

Have nothing but great memories, especially of the first 3 games, but all 4 were show stoppers graphically.

blackbeld154d ago

To making it a successful reboot they have to change that buttons layout! Make it playable like the cod button layout. Otherwise I’ll skipping it again.

Rynxie154d ago

And that's the reason why many fps games failed. Instead of being original and catering to it's fans, they tried to make it like cod. No, kz doesn't need cod button layout. It needs to be like it was on kz2 or balanced liked kz3.

Lightning77155d ago

I think Kill Zone would do great in Sony's LS push. As well as MAG reboot and bring back Resistance into LS.

Sharky231154d ago

@Lightning77

I think WarHawk would have been a great Live service game.

thorstein155d ago

Killzone games were so polished. The gameplay was just simple joy. MP was one of the best experiences.

I remember KZ3, just staring at how awesome they animated the water and then getting wasted because of it.

Guerrilla Announces Shutdown of Servers for Killzone: Shadow Fall and More

In August, online servers for several PlayStation games will shut down, leaving their multiplayer functions unplayable.

purple101636d ago

whrere on earth is the next killzone, im soooOOO thirsty for some proper weighted, (but still fast when running/sprinting) fps gamplay, it felt sooso so good on ps3, with that, lets be honest, very small, quite uncomfortable sixaxis dualshock controller, that was just too small for western sized hands, ok for japanese kids i suppose was the point>??

now with PS5 controller, it would be totally masterfull.

ClayRules2012636d ago

I hear you. I want some NEW Killzone, especially on PS5, with the PS5 DualSense controller with that ever so impressive DualSense of an experience Haptic feedback!

Knowing how far Guerrilla has come since Horizon: Zero Dawn, Killzone can only benefit greatly from their ever growing talent!!

Bobertt635d ago

I think Sony has given up on their exclusive shooters. They haven't released a remaster for the Resistance series or a new SOCOM game either. I don't think Guerilla is in a rush to make Killzone since they have Horizon now too :(.

636d ago
Outside_ofthe_Box636d ago

All I want is for them to build Killzone 2 with multiplayer included from the ground up, keep the gameplay the same, and I'll be happy.

GG with KZ3 and Shafowfall haven't been able to match KZ2 so I don't really have faith in another sequel.

Unfortunate that KZ2 came out during COD era where every game that didn't pay like Modern Warfare was deemed garbage. KZ2's multiplayer is definitely an all time great.

Michiel1989636d ago

since when was kz2 deemed garbage?

MizHDTV636d ago

Right on dude
KZ2 was just a special game to me

sinspirit636d ago

I'd love KZ2 multiplayer again. I also think they could easily incorporate a mode to compete with Battlefield style game modes

Seraphim636d ago

KZ2 was one of maybe a handful of games I actually put time into online. What a blast!! And the campaign was excellent as well. I certainly miss that dark world. Still ashamed I never buttoned up that Platinum.

Storm23636d ago

A remake of Killzone 2 with the same grittiness and feel on PS5 would be f*cking incredible. The SP and MP were just perfect. I played the sh*t out of that game. Would happily pay a lot of money for that.

DarXyde636d ago

Honestly, I don't like FPS games. They're not for me, but I do agree that there was something about KZ2 multiplayer that even someone like me enjoyed.

Sony really needs to get better about tearing down servers. I don't like that they shut them down.

shadowT635d ago

agree, KZ2 was a masterpiece

Muigi635d ago

KZ3 multiplayer was better imo.

Outside_ofthe_Box635d ago (Edited 635d ago )

@Michiel1989
"since when was kz2 deemed garbage?"

As with anything, things don't get the appreciation it deserves until way after it's release.

KZ2 got a lot of flak for it's weighty controls that many mistook for input lag. People didn't like that it wasn't a twitch shooter like CoD. You also had people saying things like "it feels like you're controlling a midget", "enemies take too long to die" (you can't pray and spray in kz2. You have to shoot in bursts for your shots to be more accurate), people complained about the sniping, etc.

This led to a lot of changes in KZ3 that turned the vets off like reducing the amount of variables for bullet damage, getting rid of spawn grenades, etc.

BISHOP-BRASIL635d ago

@DarXyde

I don't think there's much Sony or any other company in that position can do much different about it... Keeping servers running simply cost money, these gomes don't generate none anymore, so eventually they need to pull the plug.

Astrokis635d ago

KZ2 was definitely better then KZ3, but the third one still had strong suits. It’s been many years but I remember something about Shadow Fall being made by a team at GG that did NOT do KZ2 and KZ3 multiplayer which is why it felt different. I remember when I found that out it made a lot of sense about Shadow Falls multiplayer feeling so off.

Horizon zero dawn sold more copies than all of the killzone franchise combined including spin offs on handheld. I guess that's the reason why won't see killzone from guerilla soon. There is at least one more mainline horizon coming out and their second team is working on horizon VR I believe. So it's gonna be a while unless another studio takes over.

Profchaos636d ago

I've been playing a lot of Killzone 2 on rpcs3 with a duelsense combined with the ability to remap controls to a modern standard and bump the game to 60fps it shows that we really need a remaster to probably the best killzone game to date although shadowfall technically beats it in the graphics department art style was so different that they are incomparable

Killzone went to the same place as Socom and Mag, more money in 25 hour single player games with no servers to maintain. Socom was literally the reason I bought a PS2, Resistance FOM the reason I bought a PS3, all gone now.

Killzone has never been weighted correctly, the jumping never worked.

A new properly-weighted shooter in the Killzone series would be great. More like Killzone 1 and 2 than SF.

I think the issue comes from the fact that the Helghast side is sympathetic while looking like Nazi stormtroopers. The Trump age has led artists to avoid this look entirely.

I feel something may be announced soon

The sixaxis felt fine in my hands since they're small, but the ps5 really made me feel the difference. So ergonomic.

Killzone 2 was/is so good and it still looks good today. The multiplayer was fun as well. If they make a new Killzone I hope it is the style of Killzone 2.

I wish Sony didn’t abandon Resistance and Killzone. Those are some of my favorite series on PlayStation. If they’re not gonna make anymore, then maybe a remastered collection of each could be negotiated.

DefenderOfDoom2636d ago

KILLZONE 2 was my reason for buying a PS3. If a new KILLZONE or RESISTANCE was coming out in 22 I would try to buy a PS5 immediately.

SSOD2 would be big for Sony. The only reason they would be interested in it is if they can turn it into a live service game.

In which I can see that happening.

Hauntedasylum8636d ago

Hell yeah, brother. You and me both.

VanDamme635d ago

For anyone trying to understand @Lightning77’s comment, they had a typo, this should clarify:

SOD2
Superoxide dismutase 2, mitochondrial, also known as manganese-dependent superoxide dismutase, is an enzyme which in humans is encoded by the SOD2 gene on chromosome 6.

After 5 killzone games including portable Sony felt it needed a break I wouldn't say its abandoned however I believe we may randomly get a ps5 remaster with improved lighting to test the waters and eventually a full blown new game after all you can't just leave shadowfall on that ending

Horizon is priority now its a mega franchise for them maybe after Horizon they might revisit.

Imalwaysright635d ago

I refuse to play for online play but there is one game that would make pay for it and that's Resistance Fall of Man. That's the only game that would make me throw my principles out of the window without feeling ashamed of myself.

Remember in the mid 2000’s when nearly every developer started to do FPS or linear third person? Now nearly every developer wants to do open world exclusively because it’s the easiest type of game to leave things out and then expand upon the world with DLC.

So many fond memories of both Shadowfall and Mercenaries Vita online! Shadowfall's SP may have been weak, but the MP was still a ton of fun. I had a lot of time in both, and it's especially tough seeing the Vita's best mp experience get shut down.

RIP my old friends.

In my opinion, I thought the single player games was really decent too and was treated quite harshly by the critics, but then, I think the Killzone franchise as a whole was kinda under rated by the critics. I always enjoyed the story in these games and I liked the slower, more deliberate gunplay too.

I remember getting my PS4 on day 1 and the first game I installed was Killzone Shadowfall, my workmates and I would play it for hours on end, the mode whish switched between game modes was brilliant.

A world without Killzone Online. That it’s come to this…
