Gran Turismo 6 vs Forza Motorsport 5 vs Driveclub: a Screenshot Comparison Across Two Generations

The tail end of 2013 is going to be a great time for racing game fans, with Driveclub, Forza Motorsport 5 and Gran Turismo 6 hitting the shelves in close sequence.

All three games look great in their own right, but let’s take a closer look at some of their screenshots to see if it's possible to crown a clear winner, and if Gran Turismo 6 manages to keep up with its younger cousins.

GT6 looks good in the bull shots but then you see the first 'off screen' picture from a race and it's current gen roots are obvious. There's hardly any track detail and the shot is unflattering. The next gen games will clearly be better in graphical fidelity.

OrangePowerz3843d ago

It`s offline rendering used for the screenshots like other games do as well, not exactly bullshots.

Chris123843d ago

The point I was making is that they are not shots from driving the car and therefore hardly a good measure of graphical prowess. The important part is what the game looks like in motion during a race.

Abriael3843d ago

the "hardly any track detail" is because it's Silverstone. That's how silverstone is. Barren.

UltimateMaster3843d ago

Can't believe GT6 looks that great on current gen PS3.

MadSientist893843d ago

thank god someone gets it... nicely said chris

MWong3843d ago

It's amazing how good GT6 looks, it pretty much looks like a next-gen game. Which is shocking since it's a current gen title versus next-gen titles. If they ever made a PS4 HD update for GT6 it would be AMAZING.

OrangePowerz3843d ago

But the same applies to DriveClub and Forza 5 that use offline rendering to make replays look better.

ABizzel13843d ago

@Chris12

Agreed, in-game matter most to me, GT6 looks great, but in-game it looks like a really amazing PS3. The off-screen footage and the dashboard footage look great, but Forza and DriveClub are noticeably better in the dashboard screen TECHNICALLY (GT6 has AA issues on the dash).

That being said the dash on DriveClub is absolutely amazing, and GT6 is great as well, Forza actually looks the worst which is surprising. Rearview mirror places DriveClub in first again, with GT being a bit pixeled, and Forza being washed out with no real detail.

If anything these screens show that DriveClub has had another graphics jump since it's Gamescon outing, and hopefully we'll get one more boost before release and 1080p @ 60fps.

ShinMaster3843d ago (Edited 3843d ago )

Same thing with Forza 5. It doesn't looks as good in the in-game shots as it does on photo mode or replays. Forza has a history of doing this: http://i.imgur.com/MzBjk6J....

Not sure if bullshot or just baked, cause shadows don't even match: http://i.imgur.com/GvQi88v....

Also, Forza 5 uses an excessive amount of lens flares and god rays as if there was always fog in the game. I guess that means "next-gen" to Turn10.

thechosenone3843d ago

Forza with it's dull lighting. lol

morganfell3843d ago

"The point I was making is that they are not shots from driving the car and therefore hardly a good measure of graphical prowess."

Then that is what you should have said except you didn't. You called them bullshots which means they were photoshopped. So you see, that isn't the point you were making.

Gamingcapacity3843d ago

Not bullshots Chris. Bullshots are fake in-game images trying to be passed off as in-game images.

Chris123843d ago

Apologies guys, I hadn't understood the term bull shots correctly. I was trying to make the point that the only shots that should be compared are in game driving shots.

humbleopinion3843d ago (Edited 3843d ago )

GT6 doesn't only have it's roots in the current gen, but everything else from stem to leaves. It is simply a current cent game.

Infact, if you try hard even Forza and Driveclub show some current gen roots, but once you actually hit the actual gameplay the difference between them and GT6 is indeed a generation gap:

(and that's on compressed JPEGs with artifacts. Actual gameplay difference is even bigger)

Really disappointing to see that Forza doesn't have night time racing. Driving on a track as the sun slowly disappears and your headlights come on is really an incredible experience.

abusador3843d ago

Its even an incredible, awesome feeling in GTA5 and that isnt even a racer lol Ppl that minimize that feature in a racing game are only fooling themselves.

WorldGamer3843d ago

So Forza doesn't have real time, dynamic lighting? This is news to me, how can they not have night driving?

Does Forza have weather?

3843d ago
TechMech23843d ago

Forza has never really been the technical game...more of an arcade style collect your cars, sell your cars, and paint your cars. I didn't love gt5, but driveclub looks great and Forza 5 looks beautiful, but not too innovative

FunkMacNasty3842d ago (Edited 3842d ago )

TechMech2 can now be added to the (very long) list of people on N4G that think they are so smart in putting down a game they've never played

Your comment makes you look pretty dumn. Forza is a simulation. Maybe it doesn't have night racing or alll the different styles of motorsports that GT has, but it is DEFINITLEY WAAAAAAAY MORE COMPLEX than "more of an arcade style collect your cars, sell your cars, and paint your cars".

abusador3843d ago

They all look good but from what i see Gt6 got this in most regards, except DC has more lush backgrounds. Forza seems to be using a super high gloss for their cars, GT6 Semi gloss and DC flat matte paint lol and in that lies the differences.

Godmars2903843d ago

And article comparing GT6, Forza 5 and Drive Club?

Knew it was only a matter of time, but still:

DistroyerOfFanbums3843d ago (Edited 3843d ago )

GT6 looks amazing compared to next gen. To be fair, they have mastered the PS3 architexture whereas, the devs on next gen consoles will have issues the first 2 years of development. All these games look amazing.

60FPS on PS5: Unofficial PS5 'FPS Boost' mods are radically improving PS4 back compat

Digital Foundry : Whether it's via FPS Boost or bespoke software upgrades, backwards compatibility on the current-gen consoles delivered an unexpected delight - the ability to liberate older console games from their 30fps limits, running them at 60 frames per second or even higher. FPS Boost did the business for Xbox Series consoles on an impressive range of titles, but there was always the sense that PS5 could do more. It's a hunch that checks out as a range of frame-rate unlocks are available for PS5, covering many must-have games - the major caveat being that only exploitable consoles running on older firmwares are invited to the party.

you love to see new life being breathed into older titles but damn the process to get there. It should be automatic that these work for everyone... not just those who exploit their systems. Really wish Sony and MS would keep this program going officially.

Psychonaut8594d ago

Damn this sucks. I want this shit so bad, but I’m not jailbreaking my console. And frankly I shouldn’t have to. I’m not a tech person, but is it really that hard for developers to unlock the framerate? Or would that have to be a large patch?

dveio94d ago (Edited 94d ago )

"but is it really that hard for developers to unlock the framerate?"

I guess it's not.

But it has become a profitable business if you do so.

So no one would pay for only the framerate patched to being unlocked. So studios need to offer more than that.

But this would take more time, polishing and would cost more money. So they shy away, but won't unlock the framerate, either.

That's just my personal assumption. But from what I can comprehend technically, it shouldn't be difficult to unlock framerates via a patch for older games.

... if it hadn't became a business.

RaidenBlack94d ago (Edited 94d ago )

frame-rate unlock should be free ...
We've seen many devs offer free patches and updates to pretty old PC titles, even bonuses ... so why can't devs offer the frame unlock patch for free (in consultation with the platform-producers) for a title from just a generation earlier?

Einhander197294d ago

RaidenBlack

"frame-rate unlock should be free ..."

Obviously the result of that thinking is that developers aren't even going to do it.

If they had been allowed to charge $5-10 you would see incentivized developers doing it way more often.

People just always want everything for free, but it's not free to make the patch, people have to code it then other people have to test it, and there will always be other costs involved.

If people want dollar store gaming then expect to get what you pay for.

shinoff218393d ago (Edited 93d ago )

Raiden I might be wrong but last I thought it cost money to put patches out on consoles.

As far as me paying for it, I'm not all that interested tbh. Not enough to pay for it with older games, and newer games have been pretty decent about it for the most part.

dumahim94d ago

Sounds like the modder has to go in to make changes to unlock it on a game by game basis. "Simple" enough to do it unofficially, but to have it done officially, they need someone to go in a make that change, put out a patch and put it through certification, which I believe is not necessarily a cheap thing to do. It's questionable if going through this would then give them enough sales to make it worthwhile.

Inverno94d ago

Many games still have physics tied to framerate, i think it's cause they wouldn't want to go in and do anything extra. Then there's the 10 dollar upgrades they rather charge. The problem is that there's no compromise, cause if I could mod my PS4 and all I'd lose is online play then id jailbreak it immediately. Mods have done so much for PC games and they could do the same for consoles, but manufacturers hafto be willing to compromise.

shinoff218393d ago

It's not to hard to do and there's youtube videos that break it down really well. ANyway most of us here arent able to break are console anyway due to being up to date on firmware from playing

Chocoburger94d ago

Yep, this sucks having to require a jailbreak for something that should be standard in our industry by now. I learned my lesson when PS4 was jailbroken and I didn't keep a console on low firmware for years, but now I'm holding onto two low firmware PS5s specifically because there are features I'll be able to do that you can't do on official firmware, so this will pay off for me soon enough.

Jin_Sakai94d ago

It should be a sin to let these games sit and be stuck at 30fps.

EazyC94d ago

RDR 2 not getting a 60FPS patch for PS5 was a crime.

Comparing the New Grand Valley in Gran Turismo 7 to the Original

A detailed look at Gran Turismo 7's new track Grand Valley, judging its evolution from its former design and layout in Gran Turismo 6, side by side.

SullysCigar419d ago (Edited 419d ago )

Wow, crazy isn't it? The draw distance is vastly improved, the background textures too and there's ZERO shimmer now. And the replays are night and day!

EIDT: @below, Haha I didn't notice that!

IRetrouk419d ago

Yeah, theres a massive improvment all round, Looks amazing with the time of day transitions too, me and a couple online buddies jumped on earlier to try it out lol, did you notice the beach full of seals?

closed_account419d ago

That coastline looks amazing and I can only imagine it in VR! Looks like an entirely new course as far as scenery goes.

IRetrouk419d ago

Yeah, those views are going to be crazy when we are "there" can't wait!

PureBlood419d ago

Just got confirmation my PSVR2 is shipping by 24 hour courier, so I should have it tomorrow! I know nobody else cares, but I had to tell someone lol

GT7 will be my first game, as I want to test out my wheel - so excited - it's going to be awesome!

Deathdeliverer419d ago

I got my confirmation and date (22nd) showing for the charging station. The headset itself has been in “shipped-processing” status since last Friday. I’m like dang can I see the date? I was in the first round of preorders. Whenever it does get here, I’m ready. Going to go update everything and try to get over this cold.

PureBlood419d ago

Wish you better, bud, fingers crossed for your order too.

@S2Killinit - Thank you!

IRetrouk419d ago

I care👊🏻, mine is still saying prep for shipping😔

PureBlood419d ago

Thanks man 👊

Word of advice: be ready for the impromptu jig that happens when that email drops, it can be embarrassing..

DaReapa419d ago

Just got my second shipping confirmation email as well.

Man i caant wait. One day left!

Flawlessmic419d ago

I know you and a lot of people are excited for VR but dont sleep on sophy, sophy is the real game changer here!

After giving sophy a run last night, i can safely say the actual racing in future GT's is going to be Fu***** amazing!!!

even on intermediate on some tracks the AI was coming back at me on my waiting for me to slip, attacking the space if i left the door open for them, honestly felt like i was racing against people and not some very limited AI that once i passed them they may as well have been eliminated from the race like GT ai normally is.

pump it up to expert and its a real challenge to stay ahead, the next level up from expert man the AI kicked my ass, like badly.

i remember when sophy was first annouced all the nay sayers said its a pipe dream and we will never see it implemented and here we are a yr later and sophy is being tested in game for us to try out and is every good as whats been promised.

VR plus racing against sophy and wowww your not gonna feal like your actually racing for real anywhere else outside of gt.

sophy will change the game in gt8

S2Killinit419d ago

Hm I didnt realize it was like that. I didnt even know why there was so much hype about it. But thanknyou for explaining that. I mean I get it now.

But I’ll be seeing it in action tomorrow! Woot woot.

Flawlessmic419d ago

It's only for a limited time and only has 4 races but I encourage you and everyone else try it and see the difference compared to the normal Ai.

Sophy has slipped completely under the radar in this latest uodate
