Xbox One's Top Marketer Brags to Advertisers About Kinect's Abilities

Kotaku: Microsoft's top marketer tossed a juicy hunk of red meat to his kind of people yesterday. While Xbox One isn't selling the stuff Kinect collects from your living room to marketers right out of the box, the capacity is there, and it could be the kind of game-changer that makes ad buyers swoon.

allformats3844d ago

And this has been Microsoft's intentions all along. Not games, but grabbing as much data from people who play Xbox One as it can, so it could sell to potential firms who care nothing about our privacy.

Spurg3844d ago

How about you back your statements...I would love read anything that shows the Kinect is 'grabbing data from people'.

iamnsuperman3844d ago (Edited 3844d ago )

But that is what the linked article is about. Advertising Age apparently said the "Xbox One can essentially work like TV that watches you, bringing marketers a huge new trove of data,". It doesn't explicitly say we are going to sell your data/habbits to the highest bidder but it does talk about how advertises learn our behaviour through watching us and adapt accordingly.

Drewidian3844d ago

Its no different than what Google and Hulu do today, yet millions of people seem to like to use their products and don't have a problem with this.

stuna13844d ago

The thing is a person can be surrounded by red flags up the wazzoo even under their noses, but yet they choose to remain blind to facts! Sadly it's the way of the world.

People act like they've never heard the saying "Right under their nose!"

DragonKnight3844d ago

@Drewidian: So you're telling me that Google and Hulu can actually watch your face and see your reactions in real time, monitor your heart rate, and know exactly who you are, where you live, and what you look like?

ShwankyShpanky3844d ago

"I would love to read anything that shows the Kinect is 'grabbing data from people'."

Well, you could start by reading the current XBL/Kinect EULA.

ShwankyShpanky3844d ago

C'mon DragonKnight... let them have their false equivalencies. Without them, they have nothing.

Trekster_Gamer3844d ago

Exactly, just another Sony Troll full of crap and nothing to backup their bullsheeeeeet claims.

JokesOnYou3844d ago (Edited 3844d ago )

I'm seriously trying to understand where the bad news is here:

"Kinect's ability to distinguish voices in a living room, notice if people are watching the screen or not, and even pick up their heart rate, is well known. Worst-case speculation had it, back in the late spring, that these capabilities could be usef for things like tiered pricing in streaming movie rentals. More folks in the room, the more the movie costs." -Kotaku

hmmm,

-"distinguish voices in a living room"=
So a console that operates with voice commands and has announced games with voice controls is even better by recognizing multiple voices but yet its ONLY for advertising????

-"notice if people are watching the screen or not"=
uhm so what? First of all the extra movie cost scenario was never true and since now you can turn off/unplug Kinect while playing games and watching movies it sounds even more silly. More importantly they have shown that the camera is used to recognize each individual playing games so that in a game like Killer Instinct during a tournament the console will adjust each individual user controls/setup on the fly, just by handing another player the controller. Yeah but who cares how innovative that is FOR GAMES lets just talk about advertising. lol, So let me get this straight if I watch/take notice of the screen MORE when there is something I specifically like/am interested in is being shown on the screen, Kinect will actually notice this, then there is some sort of feedback to Microsoft, which therefore tells advertisers how to better cater/customize MY experience based on MY habits/preferences, this is somehow bad?????

-"even pick up their heart rate"=
Yet they have talked about and released trailers showcasing how Kinect will use the heart beat sensor to monitor fitness during workout games like Xbox Fitness.
http://www.forbes.com/sites...

-Again a lot of overdramatic speculation yet for every example micro has showcased practical use for X1 games and console functionality but of course ALL that gets overlooked and dismissed just because a few conspiracy nuts think Kinect is the devil.

malokevi3844d ago (Edited 3844d ago )

This seems like a silly thing to fight about. In fact, pretty much the whole us vs. you thing is ridiculous, but I digress. Gaming... playing video games.... everything else aside. So what if MS IS pandering to corporate interests. That's part of what they do as a multi-billion dollar company.

At the end of the day, great games are coming to the console, and it will be a breeze to use. Same goes for the alternatives.

GrandTheftZamboni3844d ago

Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they are NOT watching me.

P0werVR3844d ago (Edited 3844d ago )

^

I swear. While you fellas/gals were worrying about important things. I still am pondering whether he was bragging about Kinect's abilities at spying on people or sensing your heart rate...hhhmmmmm, porn!

rainslacker3844d ago

You can re-watch the reveal event. They said it there, plain as day with no PR spin. Tried to make it sound like a good thing.

If it weren't for the DRM being such a hot issue, I'm sure it would have gotten more notice in the press. I noticed it immediately, and while watching it I thought it was going to blow up to be their disaster. Lucky for them, everyone was distracted by their other forms of incompetence. I even mentioned it many times during those first couple weeks, and wondered why no one seemed to care that MS was going to be mining data and focusing advertising on the user. I even went so far as to say that was the real reason MS mandated the Kinect.

Maybe that was their plan all along so no one would notice.

BallsEye3844d ago

You will not win with tinfoil hats on the internet man. Just move along. BTW I'm wathing all of you now using your cellphone, your pc cam, or car dash cam and also the camera outside of your house..I'm also standing behind you always when you look in the mirror.

Volkama3844d ago (Edited 3844d ago )

I think DragonKnight says it best when he says "Kinect is amazing". I'm paraphrasing, but that's what I took from his comment :)

On-topic, advertising sucks and I am dreading the day that it interferes with gaming (Boss fight coming right up after this commercial break!).

Targetted advertising sucks a little less than blanket advertising, so I have no problem with Kinect letting MS and co know what I'm interested in seeing.

N4g_null3843d ago (Edited 3843d ago )

You guys do know your cell phones can keep recording after a call is made and any one can hack your phone camera, or laptop cam, vita, ps4, smart tv, etc camera right?

Being paranoid is not healthy. That is all and dont let that be the marketing reason you dont get some thing. If you are not doing any thing wrong why bother? Or you could live like the Amish.

Never mind guys this topic is usless. I didnt know that data mining was such a hot topic with gamers, who are data mined even going to this web site. It started with subcriptions to magazines. Companies do need feed back though.

Yet carry on with the great xbone smear campaign.

BG115793843d ago

So MS just has invented the greatess pub-machine in history...
So they don't need to sell games to make money, they only need for people to watch anything with the Xbone with the kinect on...

denawayne3843d ago

Once again. An Xbox article filled with Sony fanboys. I can't figure out who loves the system more.

the funny thing about Xbox One this has a better launch lineup then PS4.

Bring on the Disagree..

TechMech23844d ago

Sorry. I'm buying an Xbox one first, but I gotta say Killzone sf looks pretty awesome

kenmid3844d ago

@TechMech2, I agree I think looks very good.

lnvisibleMan3844d ago (Edited 3844d ago )

@ Kenmid
Even do i agree that Xbox one has a stronger 2013 lineup you shouldnt declare opinion as a fact. Secondly that doesn't have anything to with the article above.

ON topic I think that Microsoft shouldnt force Kinect on the consumer as it will discourage a lot of people from getting an Xbox one.

Sadly if they continue down this path I fear that they are going to find out the hard way who there most important stakeholders are, and it ain't the advertisers.

candoa3844d ago

I agree and btw killzone series has never being a good game that game barely sells. It just a hyped up game that nobody buys.

kenmid3844d ago

@Invisman, i was talking to @allformats for saying Microsoft is not focusing on games.

redwin3843d ago

I think this is good news. If they know I'm not watching the stupid commercials then maybe they'll stop playing them. Good!

TechMech23844d ago

Ha ha ha. You're one of those crazy conspiracy theorists. I believe the NSA would be collecting info on people, but the Xbox one was not built just to spy on people. That's why there is actually games for it.

DragonKnight3844d ago

So you're admitting that it was built to spy on people, but that it covers that with games.

TechMech23844d ago

No company would spend billions of dollars on a entertainment system JUST to spy on people. Microsoft has had two consoles previously, and they didn't release the Xbox one just to spy on the public.

Kujii3844d ago (Edited 3844d ago )

Also a company would not spend millions of dollars on an entertainment system and not have a strategy to make money off it.

I think its a bit of a stretch to say there will be someone watching a monitor with your direct kinect video feed 24/7

But MS like any other company wants to make money. New Advertising Technology = Money

MasterCornholio3844d ago (Edited 3844d ago )

After what Microsoft did with Skype there is a reason to worry.

Doesn't the Xbox one use Skype?

rainslacker3844d ago (Edited 3844d ago )

There really is a difference between spying and data mining. Data mining is just a collection of statistics that can be used to determine what is effective or not. If robust enough it can also be used to isolate individuals and use that data for whatever a company may need to do...such as target advertising. Facebook is really nothing more than a huge data mining website. Just because millions of people are willing to let every facet of their life be available to others and corporate entities doesn't mean that there aren't just as many, if not more, that don't want such things in their lives.

Spying infers that the data being collected is meant to be private(which could be the case in data mining), but that the information could also be used in ways that the user may not have knowledge of.

I really doubt the NSA or MS would be there spying on any one individual, and most people don't really do much wrong. It's highly unlikely that the police are going to bust down anyone's door if spying were going on, because it would mean the jig would be up, and everyone would know that spying was going on.

With all that though, the fact that it can be used for such purposes, makes people uneasy. The fact that the NSA does blind searches for keywords on massive amounts of data against it's own citizens, and those abroad, is concerning to others. It would likely never affect them, but the complete trampling of ethics on the principles of our right to privacy is repulsive in every way possible. Because of this, no one who cares about their privacy, or the principles of the right to privacy, should welcome a device such as this which has the capacity to do such a thing into their lives.

DragonKnight3844d ago

@rainslacker: The jig is already up. The NSA doesn't care that people know they are being spied on. Read the stuff in this link.

http://www.zerohedge.com/co...

"NSA whistleblowers say that the NSA collects all of our conversations word-for-word."

Everyone knows this, just like everyone knows that Microsoft designed NSA backdoors into people's computers so they had full access to your computer. There's also this...

"The information gained through spying is shared with federal, state and local agencies, and they are using that information to prosecute petty crimes such as drugs and taxes."

So if you're talking to your friend on the phone about the weed you smoked and how much you have, they know and can arrest you.

"And it's not only governments. Private contractors can also view all of your data (and the government isn’t keeping track of which contractors see your data and which don’t). And because background checks regarding some contractors are falsified, it is hard to know the types of people that might have your information. Indeed, private contractors are involved in spying on behalf of governments world-wide."

This one is a little much for me, but it highlights some possibilities, and a mandatory camera with facial recognition and a heart rate monitor from a company with a history of giving the NSA all the spy tools they could ever hope for is definitely a possibility.

"It's not just your computer and your phone. It is well-documented that the government may be spying on us through cars and buses, streetlights, at airports and on the street, via mobile scanners and drones, through our smart meters, and in many other ways"

The NSA and Obama do not care. They don't have anything better to do, and they don't care if you don't like it.

nypifisel3843d ago

It's not just to spy on people, It's bringing technology to households which have the ability to. The MS NSA debacle doesn't really say that MS would give the NSA access what it does say is that MS got no problem with giving out your personal information. To sell this information to advertisers is lucrative to say the least.

flunkers3843d ago

It's a games console. I'm.sure the NSA have better things to do than watch people sitting in a room with controller in their hands.

"Oh look. There's someone playing a game. And a another. And another. My god - there all at it. Send the feds round!!!!

Seriously.

Get serious!

christocolus3844d ago

really? i shouldnt be replying your comments at all but just for the benefit of a doubt besides kinect functionality and tv services.what makes the ps4 different from the xbx one? last time i checked they both had games as their primary function with ms even backing up games development with over a billion dollars...so if the xbx one (an unreleased console)is the worst console in history i would like to know the criteria used for awarding it with that title...

Insomnia_843844d ago

@Christocolus

MICROSOFT! That pretty much summarizes everything that's wrong with the Xbox One.

I see that you are new around here. You may not know much about how Microsoft treats its costumers. Maybe you don't know about their screwed up practices, their lies etc. If what's happened since the Xbox One reveal is not enough for you to give them the middle finger, what happened with the 360 won't be enough either. It's always a f*ck-the-consumer way with MS and what they tried to pull with the XBone is on an another level, now they are making people LIKE YOU believe that everything is ok, like nothing happened and trying to convince people to get their spy cam in their homes by doing and saying ecerything Sony does and says and that's why you think they are not different when they really are. Stop believing everything Microsoft says and do your own research, stop being a tool, stop being controlled, understand things.

robotgargoyle3844d ago

Idk. Phillips 3DO and Nintendo Virtual Boy were pretty bad.

JokesOnYou3844d ago (Edited 3844d ago )

chris bro I wouldn't waste my time with comments like his, while he's certainly entitled to his opinion if he's not going to bother explaining why then thats always a good sign responding with logic is pointless or it just invites more one sided point of view....plus its n4g you gotta just have thick skin, if you're expecting fair open minded conversation then you are on the wrong site, the internet for the most part doesnt usually work that way and n4g is by far one of the worst places to look for this. It is however a great place to find lots of up to date news from many different sources and of course if you decide to dare comment be ready to take some shots, fire some shots, and if you're lucky read some reasonable comments from some reasonable folks from time to time.

rainslacker3844d ago (Edited 3844d ago )

@Robot

Please. 3DO was an ambitious project. It was the first of it's kind to use a licensed hardware principle so any company that wanted to get into the industry could do so with a low R&D cost. The 3DO at it's time was a very innovative idea that sought to open up gaming and break the monopolistic control that Sega and Nintendo had on the industry.

It was terribly expensive, and lacked developer support, but it did try something that would theoretically have been very good for the consumer.

I was never a big fan of it myself...being pretty young and broke...but please...don't lump them into the same category as MS.

let me break this down when you accept the terms of agreement on the xbox one when you turn it on you won't pay attention you will just accept it without reading it giving MS the right to do wtf they want with your information because you agreed do you not know this by now.
http://www.youtube.com/watc... funny scenario but this is basically what will happen i love south park.
or if your really worried you can give it a read day one http://www.youtube.com/watc...

Kujii3844d ago

+1 For people needing to read the Terms and Conditions. Im pretty sure even if you "Opt Out" of the information sharing they will still have you "agree" to them sharing other parts of your account etc.

rainslacker3844d ago

TOC's are long overdue to be simplified for the user to read, not just in gaming, but software and everything else in general.

I couldn't even buy tickets from ticketmaster the other day without having to agree to a 10 page TOC. What's funny about them is that if people actually read any of them, no one would agree to anything, because they're designed in such a way to have no consumer benefit except for some token "end user rights" paragraph that makes up less than 1% of the entire thing.

Luckily 99% of the time nothing really comes from it, and most products can be used without issue, but damn I would hate to get a product that falls into that 1% category. I hate that feeling of hopelessness knowing you'll hit nothing but brick walls as customer service falls back on a TOC agreement, or worse, you have to continuously re-agree to new terms to keep using a product you already paid for.

I believe the first agreement you agree to should be binding for as long as you own that product. It's what you agreed to purchase, and it's what the company agreed to sell you. That one little clause of, "We reserve the right to change these policies at any time" should be illegal.

You can bring Google and Hulu up all you want to Drewidian but it's not the same thing.

@nick: There are no ads on the PS3 and there won't be on PS4. Show me a Pizza Hut add on the PS3.

Campy da Camper3844d ago

Its a broken model though. I shop o line quite a bit and use Google often. I have yet to have one single ad that appeals to me. I always buy music or clothes and search for things like rock n roll information, nude women, etc and I have never received an ad for half off a naked blonde or enter contest to have megadeth play my Sunday BBQ. Its always buy house insurance cheap! (I rent an apartment) or cheap airline tickets! (Haven't flown in years)

If I'm going to be data mined at least advertise things I want herp derp.

rainslacker3844d ago (Edited 3844d ago )

@Campy

If you don't have adblocker installed you may notice right here on N4G that the ads are targeted based on search history. For me, it's namely stuff I searched for or browsed on amazon. Not too long ago when I was looking for a new car, I saw many...and I mean many...different ads for cars....including a Lamborghini because I happened to go look at some Lamborghini pics around the same time.

The system isn't foolproof, but it does work. The idea behind advertising isn't always to hook you on the first go. Often times it's more about repetition. The more often you see something positive about a product, the more likely you are to purchase it.

Otherwise, I agree. The fact that MS has ads at all on a device that people pay for a service to use half it's features is just bad. Usually people pay to remove ads...so it's rather funny that MS can get people to pay to see ads.

solidjun53844d ago (Edited 3844d ago )

The easiest way to do data mining with minimal backlash, besides not doing it. Is to offer a decent compensation for your data.

Godmars2903844d ago

They'll doubtlessly offer achievement points if not cash incentives, but to what level is the question. Will MS reserve the "right" to make special offers along with additional advertising or just do it whenever? If one person in a household agrees then will the whole whole house come under scrutiny?

There's really too many questions about this, but MS in likely getting everything before anyone outside of the program knows anything about it.

infectedaztec3843d ago

I imagine they'll offer discounts for DLC based on the number of ads you watch.

For example: for discounted bf4 map packs they might get you to watch ads for upcoming EA games.

This 'data mining' has the potential to be a consumers best friend.

Drewidian3844d ago

You people are funny. No one knows how this service will work for sure, but I'll give you an idea how it might work. It could work like Hulu where if you sign up for the service you'll get a chance to interact with the type of ads that are shown during live broadcasts. You could interact where when a commercial comes on, you'll be asked if this advertisement is relevant or not. It could also offer an option to snap a web page to make a purchase or even open a dedicated app. Or it could be book marked for viewing later after the show is over. There's tons of options and people are already jumping to conclusions.

They may even be partnering with cable/satellite companies to subsidize the Xbox One for say... $99 on a 2 year contract and if you want you could agree to providing feedback or opting in to the service I mentioned above and get Xbox Live subscription for free. The bottom line is that it could be beneficial to everyone and offer a service that people could want if it gives them something back. Until we know for sure everyone should just wait and see what it will be.

OrangePowerz3844d ago

Don't know how it is in your area but here the tv box isn't free if you want the good one for HD and plenty of storage so I would pay for 2 boxes + the monthly fees unless I would go with the crappiest one they have that's for free.

brew3844d ago

I think he might be an astroturfer. neogaf is infested with these marketers that defend Xbox One. The ones defending ads seem to be using Hulu and Google a lot as justification.

ShwankyShpanky3844d ago

I didn't know Hulu was in the business of distributing cameras that were designed to analyze your heart rate and facial expression.
