I was just watching a Rev3Games Casual Friday video that asked the question: What games do you suck at? It got me thinking about that question myself and the answer for me was obvious.
The genre of games I completely suck at are pretty much anything that's first person based, but mostly first person shooters. It's odd because I can play some games that allow for a toggling of first person to third person (i.e. Skyrim) and do many actions pretty well, and I can play Borderlands 2 with better success than a military based shooter, but for the life of me I can't do well playing most first person shooters. Part of the reason is that I personally find the first person view to be highly limiting and it doesn't add any immersion for me. Another reason is that my introduction to FPS games were the originals like Wolfenstein, and Doom (good games that I enjoy), Duke Nukem 3D (I like it) and then nothing until Medal of Honor 1 and 2 for the PS1.
Those games belonged to a friend of mine who didn't want to play anything but those games and so it really turned me off of the genre early on. What's odd also though is that I enjoy being a sniper in games that I can be. I can't say I'm excellent at the role, but I'm decent enough. I guess I don't mind shooters if I can take my time.
I'm also not so great at racing games, especially games like Gran Turismo. Doesn't help that I get bored of them pretty quickly.
Games that I'm not good at but enjoy would probably be fighters. I like super moves and that's been the sole reason I've bought fighters before despite being trounced in them easily (save for Soul Calibur, I seem to be pretty decent with Cervantes) and yet still enjoyed playing them.
Genres that I'm good at are RPGs, I'm fairly decent with Action games (God of War, Dynasty Warriors, DMC), great at puzzle games, for some reason I'm pretty good with third person shooters (Last of Us for the win), and I'm good with Metroidvania's and Platformers too. My favourite by far though are stealth games. If I can play stealth in a game, that's how I will play it for the whole game until I can't.
I haven't been able to figure out why I'm no good at shooters and I don't seem to get any better no matter what games I try. Guess it's just not in the cards for me, which is a shame because I don't want to not enjoy a game or genre, but it happens.
What's your Achilles Heel genre? Something you stay away from no matter what and probably could never enjoy?
Duuro says: "I think the idea behind the movement is cool, but on the other hand, the execution and clear limitation of the platform somewhat undermine the whole thing."
"The Wakefield-based (the UK) indie games publisher and developer Team 17 and indie games developer Ernestas Norvaišas, are today very proud and excited to announce that the full version (v1.0) of their train-led city builder “Sweet Transit”, is now available for PC via Steam and EGS." - Jonas Ek, TGG.
Review - If you are a fan of intrigue in your stories then The Mildew Children on Xbox will be well up your street.
I honestly can't think of any genres I "suck at" but if I had to pick one. Sports games, I can't stand most of them and that's probably one reason why I'm pretty crap at playing them, or at least the ones I've bothered playing in the past.
I suck at fighting games and racing so I stay away from them. Fps and action are where I am the most adept.
Racers for me. Mostly due to me finding them utterly boring. I'm just not willing to put the time in. But ya, Racers.
racing and sports just boring to me. Unless its Mario Kart.
I can't seem to get good at RTS's. I like watching the action too much. You have to constantly be micro managing this and that all the time, and I end up failing because I want to watch my armies demolish towns.
