"After the NVIDIA Shield and the Ouya I think it’s about time we called it quits on Android consoles being “the future” and even being in the future."
From systems that could keep your beer cool, to oddities trying to get in on the popularity of VHS and laserdisc, you’ve got some very, very weird video game consoles out there.
I had the LaserActive... it was a nice collectors piece but not very practical. Especially when it came to needing recapping. I think i paid all of about $50 for the floor model from an incredible Universe back in the day. I ended up selling it many years later for $300 at the time due to it needing a new laser and the aforementioned recapping.
An honorable mention not on the list would be the VM Labs Nuon. It basically looked like any regular DVD player but it had ports on it for controllers to play specific games. one of which is still exclusive to it with Tempest 3000. It also offered nuon enhanced DVD movies with extra content not accessible by regular players.
Starting in mid-February, a planned update to the NVIDIA Games app will begin rolling out to SHIELD owners. With this update, the GameStream feature will no longer be available. SHIELD users can continue to use GameStream until that time.
For sometime, I'd been contemplating getting a Shield to replce my Steam Link hw as the Shield is a more capable 4K/60 device for streaming. Happy they notified us before I finally decided to pull the trigger on getting one.
The firmware update 8.2.2 for Nvidia Shield with some interesting changes is now available for download. It is now possible to use the controllers of the PS5 and Xbox Series X on the device. Further details can be found in the message.
It's nice to have the support. But without the unique functions of the DualSense I wouldn't go for it unless you already have a PS5 laying around. As there are many other controllers compatible with the system that will also cost much less.
Just ordered my Shield T.V (new tube looking one), coming tomorrow, it should pair nice with my pc. This is great news as I have both PS5 and Xbox controllers no need to buy another controller.
Its hard to get a console going when the users don't actually buy games.
Were there any good games for these consoles?
Will there be any good games for these consoles?
ouya would be nice for like a party thing. i guess. but when PS4 and X1 come out it sells will be non existent
They were really hoping for a niche market to carry this. The reason that phone and tablet games are so popular is because they are on the go and they are a nice, cheap way of spending a couple of unoccupied minutes.
The biggest games on those devices are rarely played for more than bite sized chunks of time. Having a platform that asks you to dedicate more than that to them is kind of silly.
Getting developers to actually dedicate themselves to the system seems to be a real issue as well, as it should be. In the days of Steam, where just getting your game on the service markets it to millions every day for free . . .
The only future I ever saw for this was for those looking for a cheap, small emulator player for the living room or bedroom.
