No Fanboyism is not the same as no competition. If every person made an educated decision on what console to buy based on their personal preferences, one would still outsell the other. This can exist without spineless online arguments and insulting that result from the insecurity that goes along with being a loyalist. I would argue that adding fanboyism holds gaming back more than it has helped it move forward.

The fanboyism that really needs to stop is haters getting on other systems threads and being like "nintendo is for babies, wii u is dead", or "xbone isnt up to par with ps4 graphically, no one wants kinect", or "ps4 makes you pay, their system was hacked, hurr durr"...I tell you straight out I am a Nintendo fanboy, for more reasons than I really feel like listing right now, but I don't go into xbox and ps threads telling people "duh, er you shouldnt like your system because its a, um, er, crap and because my system is like so much more better"...which is rather absurd all things considered, bc if its so much better, why are you whining about other systems and not playing games?!? People need to grow up.

I agree about about the over abundance of the negativity towards Xbox 1. Every article about the console is destroyed by PlayStation fanboys. I swear they scour the internet for anything Xbox related so they can trash it. Are all Sony fans like this? No most of them aren't. But the obnoxious few ruin it & it sets a bad example for all PlayStation fans.

I disagree. And I point to how fanboys of everything else in the world are not only accepted but understood as necessary, and then I ask why gaming is treated differently.

You don't see folks in the auto world complaining that people need to stop being passionate about their love for Ferrari instead of Lamborghini. Star Wars and Star Trek fanboys (mostly) coexist.

But let the subject come to gaming, and suddenly it's a huge deal.

Well personally I feel a person shouldn't ever be pushed so far that they call someone a retard over any medium. But it just seems that in the other forums I have been in for politics, sports, music , movies and others, I see the same unnecessary aggression. I think any excess towards gaming may be simply because you see more gaming related aggression from a vocal minority or that is where you spend most of your time because I assure you it happens across anything that two people can disagree on, and it is never necessary in my opinion.

Well, I've never noticed it in the car or movie arena, and book fans (whether of particular series, or specific authors) tend to be rather respectful, on the whole. But with that said, you'd think that it would be easy to look at other mediums, other interests, and see how fanboyism exists there, and not go, "Oh, it just needs to go away."

Yes, a lot of the hostility could definitely do with being toned down, but I'd prefer it if fanboys stuck around, honestly speaking. Even if we're on different sides of the same argument.

yeah it seems we have different definitions because I don't consider people who people who prefer a specific brand to be fanboys, but just fans. Only people who lash out at others either verbally or physically to defend their choice or put down another brand to be fanboys.

The term "fanboy" didn't arrive until Microsoft came onto the seen, with the Xbox360. With the online presence of Rep.Mangers. They are the ones that started the attack on Nintendo, as a kiddie counsel. and the illusionary Hard Core Halo Gamer.
