First Forza Motorsport 5 Japanese Preview from TGS Laments Severe Visual Degradation from E3 Build

Forza Motorsport 5 was exhibited at Tokyo Game Show, exposed to the Japanese press, and it's known that the Japanese are big petrolheads. They love their car games.

Unfortunately the first Japanese preview ran by popular site Game Watch lamented a severe visual degradation from the E3 build of the game.

That's a REALLY eye-catching title, I literally said "Whaaaaaa!?" out loud when I read it.
DualShockers really knows how to get N4G readers attention, it's starting to remind me of all those old HipHopGsmer articles. Hopefully they don't go too far and get down-voted off the site like his site did.

That said, please don't get me wrong, this is a legitimate story. Maybe they were finally REALLY showing the game on X1 hardware and had been using "similarly spec'd PC hardware" in an X1 case up until this point? Or it could just be some small technical problem with the new build that will be ironed out before launch. Not a good thing to hear about MS flagship launch title but I doubt it's a deal breaker for fans either way. He still praises the technical specs in the end.

It'd be nice to know more about what was wrong.

The comparison was with the E3 build and the TGS build though, not Gamescon.

Please do not try and claim that there was no degradation. The MS rep acknowledged that something was wrong and being worked on. That is LITERALLY confirmation that something didn't look as good between the two builds.

Best to just hope that it gets back to its former glory before the game is shipped and move on.

You seem to be playing the lines here. I agree that there seems to be some kind of degradation as this TGS demo and people should not be so quick to claim bias. That is just one side though.

This is also being played on the PS side as some kind of revelation of the Xbox being a flawed design that can not run Forza the way M$ said it could. This is the side you seem to have no problem with.

It could not have been a problem with a new build of the game that got sent to the show in error (happened before)? Could not have been a bad set of HDMI cable that do not fully support the output X1 is using or that were poorly made?

May be you might want to tell you boys to stop jumping to conclusions before they have a single fact as to what the problem was. If there is a problem withX1 running its games properly, that is not something that can be swept under the rug. I mean you can hide horrible graphics in a game, right? It will be seen day one and the X1 will be sitting on store shelves across the world. I would think M$ knows this. We have no idea what the problem was, unless MS responds to it in detail we will remain in the dark on the subject. I'm not going to act like I know what it was because it could have been any number of possibilities.

I'm not about to defend MS either, it could be "anything" as in something small or something big. That includes those claims of MS doing something underhanded as well as something as small as a technical problem with the tv display, HDMI, bringing the wrong game build, a new build that still needs refinement etc.

All I'm saying and all I've been saying on any topic like this that has no concrete details is to wait and see and hope for the best.

Just checking. The compression in those gamespot videos is so awful that they can barely prove that the game actually runs. They're hardly a testimony of its graphical quality.

If you want to try and prove him wrong (not that you really can with video off youtube, mind you), you may want to at least use something that hasn't been compressed with a shovel.

You can't asses the true graphical quality of a game from a youtube video, even more so if heavily compressed. They'll ALWAYS have jaggies, because the compression creates them whether the original has them or not.

Nothing to counter? I made it abundantly clear this is the first person I've heard...from E3 until now..who's stated there has been any degradation in the Forza builds.

Then I asked if I should take his opinion as gospel when, out of the MANY people who have had hands on, he's the only one who's reported this..including at TGS.

I think that's counter enough...him against the months of expos and other hands and no report of this. If that isn't enough counter for you then so be it.

He's a respected journalist in his field, and one that has always very fairly (and most times enthusiastically) reported on the forza series at the very least since Forza 2 (which is the earliest article of his on the franchise I could find). So yes. he's credible.

If more and more reports come out stating the same things then so be it...if you can confirm what he saw was a different booth than what IGN posted then I'd like that info.

In all your yrars of game development, how many times were you running unsigned code on retail units? How is it you think PS4 games ar running on retail PS4's? Take a peek at their FCC filings and you will see the PS4 test units or debug units look like retail ones. That doesn't mean all tests and demos are done on the "retail" test units. Some are done on dev units which is very uncommon and some are done on the debug units that were much more common before the final debug units. Those look just like PC's.

Prior to the 360's release, games were running on modified Apple G5's. You are making a big deal out of something that is supposed to be happening and is normal.

I work as a video game journalist... I knoooow they use PCs at trade shows :P Take the time to read my comment next time because that wasn't the issue I brought up.

Typically games are demoed on PCs that feature equivalent specs, but in the Xbox Ones case at E3 it was demoed on a PC that had specs that were roughly double that of the Xbox One :) They were running them full out too.

Visit a developer and ask to see how game development is done. Ask if they can show you the tools and programs they use. You may want to see if the tools and programs they use impact the games they are running in any way.

As a journalist, have you ever used an emulator? Do you get a performace hit when running the emulator on a PC? Do you think the PS4 or Xbox One games run natively on a PC or do you think they emulate the hardware and run in a shell?

Hicken, I don't know how to make it any more clear. Dev kits, especially ealry dev kits do not contain the same hardware as the consoles do. Even the "official" kits are not the same on the hardware level. Dev kits are more software than hardware as far as the platfor goes. Debug or test kits typically do since they are designed to be the same as the retail release, but still have the ability to run unsigned code.

In short, people complaining about devs using these ultra powerful PC's to enhance the demo's performance have absolutely no idea how the actual development process works.

Rockstar showed super hi-res shots and videos of GTA5 before release and the final release versions are full of jaggies and lower resolution.
Companies can and do try this kind of stuff to fool customers and it works most of the time. MS may have showed the game on high end PC's at E3 and now on actual hardware it may not be the same.

Blaming the monitors. That is classic. How can you set a monitor to display something that badly as he claimed, monitors have nothing to do with jaggies or it would have to be broken in some way or actually a 720p monitor but why would they use those to show off a game that runs at 1080p? What was Forza 5 running on at E3, was it a PC? What was it on at TGS?

Cause I remember them showing off Forza 5 on Jimmy Fallon and it was not on the Xbox One at the time, the had this beast of a PC hidden behind Jimmy inside the cockpit he was sitting in with a steering wheel controller. It was so obvious because the back of the cockpit was unnecessarily big, it also had all these vents in it as if that didn't make it anymore obvious. Why the hell would you need vents in the back of a freaking cockpit and a wheel controller? Oh yea that is right, you wouldn't unless there was something inside there producing a lot of heat like lets say..? A PC running Forza 5.

I have been to tons of arcades and even know people who have cockpits setup in their houses but none of them look like that one or ever have a need to have big ass vents in the back of it or such a large area behind it, that is the size of a desktop PC.

Too many Xbox One games are still running on PC. Kind of odd how that doesn't worry others it being so close to release and it seems what developers all over have said speak through right into this.

Wouldn't that be some shit if that is just how the Xbox One actually runs Forza 5.. Oh man, I can't say I wouldn't get a little enjoyment out of that with all the bullshit I have had to hear about this game and how superior it is to all racing games.

Yea that's what happens when take the game off of a fucking Intel i7 processor and NVidia GFX cards. I mean seriously, if this true what games does Xbox even have at 1080p anymore. Ryse is 900p, Killer Instinct 720p 30fps, Titanfall looks sub-hd and now this with Forza, which even before this had no visual effects within the game AT ALL. PS4 titles may not all be 60fps, but they are all 1080p, even Knack which people continue to discredit. Seems to me that only one system can be considered next-gen and it sure as hell isn't the Xbox one.

The PS3 cannot achieve Toy Story graphics.. ROFL.

So lost with all of that. I never knew of this widespread issue neither did any of my friends or family back in the days. All our PS1's and PS2's worked. PS1 was easier because the laser was exposed all you had to do is clean the lens of the laser every once in a while.

Both my PS1 and PS2 have lasted way past their life expectancy. I still have them both and they still work.

Can I just say that and I think there is a lot of truth in this..

..is that most LED/LCD, Ultra HD and 4K screens nowadays have two settings ( or maybe more that I don't know of ).

They are the factory setting for retail shops ( uses a lot of energy and the downside is life of screen is diminished ) and the other which most of us use is home setting ( less vibrant even if you try playing/setting to your desired preference, on the other hand life of screen is longer ).

So I'm thinking maybe, just maybe those screens that have been placed at the expo have been used so much.

This is really getting depressing. I have no doubt that X1 games will improve drastically as devs get more familiar with the console but every launch game seems to be running into big problems. My only hope is that this secret they're keeping is what is the problem. Kind of like how the ps3 used the cell and devs had a hard time making games with it for a while but then ND shows how to harness its power. Maybe we just need Bungie or Epic to really get things going.
