Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z is a bloody mess | Polygon

Polygon: "The Ninja Gaiden spin-off being developed by Team Ninja, Spark Unlimited and Comcept, action game Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z, shares little resemblance to the rest of the series. It's a cel-shaded, comedically gory hack-and-slash that, based on the Tokyo Game Show demo, trades high-speed action and finesse for ease of play."

After the faithful and totally amazing job they did on Lost Planet 3, I am completely surprised to see they would screw this game up. *

* Sadly... I feel the need to note I am being sarcastic.

Aleithian3867d ago

Maybe rather than faulting it for it's ease of play, it would be better to say that it is a casual or arcade version of NG. The series doesn't have to be bloody hard in every incarnation.

admiralvic3867d ago (Edited 3867d ago )

No, but it also doesn't have to be a Ninja Gaiden game either.

I don't see why it's bad to get angry when an IP you like changes, but write off the developers / publishers for trying to cash in on the name. This game, much like Lost Planet 3, could very easily be their own games without any ties to either franchise. Like the only thing LP 3 had that related to Lost Planet was the use of the term "Snow Pirate", the company Nevec, T-Eng, an anchor was used, the bugs were called Akrid and some akrid came from previous games. Beyond that it could have been its own game and done fine. I assume the same is probably true here, so why does that make it right?

Hicken3867d ago

True, though I guess the worry is that, like many other franchises, it will start to lose its identity.

Aleithian3867d ago

I can see the concern if this is a sign of things to come. There's plenty franchises that have lost their identity in this sense. I objected to dragon age 2 on this basis, because it destroyed what was special and unique about DA 1. So the question is: is this a sign of where the series is going?

Hicken3867d ago

That is the question, indeed. Like you, I wasn't too enthused with Dragon Age 2. Decent game, but it had nothing on the original. It seems the next Dragon Age won't be in the footsteps of DA2, but whether or not it will be more like Origins remains to be seen.

As for this game, it remains to be seen if it's the new direction for the franchise, or just a one-shot.

Wow! I seriously loved the first one. Don't know why it was reviewed poorly, it was fun as hell and the humor was great.

I seriously hope they make a sequel in the same style as the first.

isarai1933d ago

Everyone loved the concept, just gameplay wise it fell a bit flat compared to the previous games. I myself never played it but am really excited to hear they are doing another in the spinoff series. I've always had an interest in it, but just never pulled the trigger on actually buying it, might go back and actually play the first one now though.

gangsta_red1933d ago

The gameplay was very fast arcade type action that I felt was just as challenging as the regular Ninja Gaiden series.

What made the game great was the fact you played as a villain oit for revenge...from what I remember, it's been a long time. It was such a great concept going through levels trying to get revenge on Ryu.

Definitely give it a shot if you ever come across it, I don't remember the reviews for the game but I definitely had a blast when I played it.

Sm00thNinja1933d ago

Easily the worst Ninja Gaiden game.... Well maybe 3. 3 was pretty bad

Smokehouse1933d ago

I had the first on 360, the art style was awesome.

Prubar1933d ago

Finally got around to playing this one this year. I understand why it got bashed in the reviews but I still enjoyed it as a whole. The combat combos were solid and the traversal prompts looked sweet.

syphon321933d ago

Me too, but I had fun playing it, with the quirky insane combos and the hackneyed story.. It wasn't meant to be taken seriously, just enjoy whacky beat em up nonsense

Imortus_san1933d ago

Resurrect the worst Ninja Gaiden game ever, WTFF?

Ugh. I really miss good Ninja Garden games

Rimeskeem2626d ago

Aye, the soil was always fertile and the plants grew fast!

bouzebbal2625d ago (Edited 2625d ago )

Nioh is just one more of the great franchises made by Koei Tecmo

CorndogBurglar2625d ago

Ninja Gaiden is a totally different type of game than Nioh. Its a fast-paced, incredibly technical action game. It has its own place and should not mirror the Nioh/Dark Souls/Bloodborne formula. They too have their own place.

IamTylerDurden12625d ago

But Nioh clearly has Ninja Gaiden combat elements infused into it.

IamTylerDurden12625d ago

Nioh is the future of Team Ninja.

chrisx2626d ago

Nioh is the Beginning of the Nioh Franchise, the latest amazing Playstation exclusive

UCForce2625d ago

Man, this game is just good.

PhoenixUp2626d ago

I sure hope not. Ninja Gaiden has its own unique identity

starchild2625d ago

I agree. Nioh is awesome in my book. But Ninja Gaiden in its heyday was outstanding as well. It had it's own mechanics and its own flavor. I hope we one day see another Ninja Gaiden game.

Team Ninja: "[Ninja Gaiden] Needs to be in the Shadows for a While"

Team Ninja creative director discusses the whereabouts of the iconic action franchise, says Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z "wasn't the right move" for the series.

Gaming4Life19812653d ago

I am a die hard fan but ninja gaiden 3 sucked so make it more like 1 and 2 or not at all.

spicelicka2653d ago

Yes! Specially the physics of NG2, still my favourite hack n slash game.

Movefasta19932653d ago (Edited 2653d ago )

ng2 has great physics, the combos felt great to land. The 360 version was insane, the gore and the ultra aggressive enemies .Miss the game :(

thatguyhayat2653d ago

They dumbed it down soo much. But luckily these guys listen to fans so hopefully they learnt their lesson

blitz06232653d ago

I would totally buy a 1-2 HD remaster. Hell, throw in 3 there too

DarXyde2653d ago

Ninja Gaiden was always HD.

darthv722653d ago

You do know Ninja Gaiden Sigma was an HD remaster of Ninja Gaiden 1/Black right? you could say the same about NG Sigma 2 as it relates to NG2.

Gaming4Life19812653d ago

Agreed. I loved ninja gaiden 1 but ninja gaiden 2 is my favorite and i would do anything for a ninja gaiden 1 & 2 remaster.

They should have known better than to make Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z. That didn't look or feel like a Ninja Gaiden game at all. They need to make another one like Ninja Gaiden Sigma that came out on PS3. That was good.

Seraphim2653d ago

Agreed. They never should have put the NG name on that product. While I see why they wanted to do something different they should have left the game sell on it's own merit, or lack thereof in this case. The idea was pretty good but the execution was poor. Furthermore they could have sold it as in the NG realm w/o calling it NG. At the end of the day it had absolutely no business having NG in it's name.

Anyway, while I have faith in the team I think they might not have the vision to recreate NG as we saw it in 1 and 2 nor are they sure how to improve upon it or where to go now. That was proof in 3 when Itagaki was out & it was up to the remainder of Team Ninja to create 3. In Ni-Oh, if successful I can see Team Ninja focusing on a sequel and not coming back to NG for some time. Which is a shame.

CrimsonWing692653d ago

or why don't you redeem yourself and make a seriously good ninja gaiden game instead of making fans wait.

Xb1ps42653d ago

Ninja gaiden... loved that game and remember those great moment on the Xbox.. I'm not much of a fan of remasters but I would buy a pro or Scorpio remaster of ninja gaiden day one...
