I rather do think a lot of Sony fanboys are insecure. Why else would they be in every Xbox article compared to the very few rabid Xbox fanboys who pop in on a small percentage of Sony articles?

Can't speak for the others Flame, but of course exposure like this is paid for. That list is huge in the holiday season, and Toy's R' Us knows it can make an extra buck by selling their ad space. In fact, 90% of the ads you see from best buy, GameStop, Target, etc for electronics is paid for by the manufacturer subsidizing the cost of the ad through rebates on those products. Hell, half the stuff advertised for grocery stores is subsidized by the manufacturers. It's all a money game.

If this stuff was based on actual demand, no one on here can reasonably deny that the PS4 warrants a place on there if the X1 does.

Maybe Sony didn't feel the need to spend that much money on it, or Toy's R' Us knows that there will be short supply, so why not sell what they KNOW they will have available. They surely know by now what their allotment of each will be.

All of you who are claiming that this is some sort of conspiracy where Microsoft "paid off" Toys R Us and many other similar accusations what is commonly referred to as "a special kind of stupid".

Why?

Because it is against the law to engage in such blatantly anti-competitive behavior and if there were even a shred of evidence showing Microsoft, or Sony for that matter, are engaging in these tactics, the legal ramifications are MASSIVE.

A few years ago, AMD took legal action against Intel with claims they made anti-competitive deals with Dell which prevented AMD from competing. AMD won and was awarded $1.2 Billion if i recall correctly.

And I'm not denying M$ has spent a ton of money in this fight. In fact, what they've done is completely legal. The almost billion dollars spent has been on marketing, game development incentives, and other forms of advertising which ALL have the purpose of helping Microsoft market and sell their new console. None of these actions are anti-competitive or illegal in the slightest, and more importantly are all being used by Sony as well. And again, anyone who says Sony is not doing the exact same has completely lost their mind.

Either Microsoft used some of their advertising dollars which is what companies typically do or Toys R Us is sold out of PS4's and wants to use their advertising dollars to advertise something they can actually sell since it is still available. My guess is it is a combination of both.

To be honest, I don't think Microsoft payed them though it is possible like how they payed Polygon to give PS3 and Vita exclusives unfair scores. It has more to do with the lack of knowledge that the 360 was a success in the US that they think that the Xbox One will bring equal sales thoughout the year and after.

M$ paid $50 million to get GTA4 timed exclusive content to try to help sell their console. It's also rumored they paid an extra $25 million for Rockstar to make the 360 version the lead platform and releases day and date with the PS3 version.

M$ paid $1 million (Euro) to silence a female employee who was unfairly overlooked for a managing director position.

M$ shuts down the comment section on the Xbox One YouTube reveal page, because they didn't like the negative backlash.

Once again most of what I posted has been proven. FACT M$ paid $75 million for GTA4 in total. FACT M$ screwed a female employee over, and paid her to stay quiet. Congrats on pulling one piece of information from an entire list of FACTS, to try and use in your argument. That's what people do when they can't stand on their own. Of course Sony pays developers/publishers for their games on to be on PS+, and it's possible they pay for exclusive and timed exclusive DLC. However, more often then not when it comes to DLC, Sony generally aids the developers on making the game optimized for the PlayStation hardware, co-develop the game, or develop the game in full (I think Sony is actually funding the PS Vita port of Borderlands). So yes that's good business; however, y've never heard of Sony spending $75 to make a game multiplat and better for their console. They'd rather make their own exclusive for that money.

Unlike @Gozer would have you believe I actually enjoyed the Xbox brand. I liked the Xbox original, and enjoyed the 360. M$ lost me with the sheer greed and stunts they tried to pull, and I'll get a Xbox one at some point because I love games, but you can guarantee the console will be bought used and I'll spread that word to everyone I know. It's humbling and a good lesson for them to learn, just like Sony learned a hard lesson for pricing the PS3 at $600.

Yeah Toys R Us is the last place I'd go to buy a game or console. I used to get their gift cards every once in awhile for Christmas or birthday, and I hated them because Toys R Us prices were just a little higher than everyone else. I'd end up having to pay a little extra. I finally got all my relatives to go with Best Buy or GameStop cards instead.

OT - Obviously this is a fishy deal. Even if Toys R Us is only in the US (I'm not sure), PS4 would still be at least on their list, and preorder numbers would argue that PS4 is the "hotter" of the two consoles.

It has nothing to do with area. I was of course speaking in broad generalities, but Toy's R' Us is packed here on Black Friday weekend, and all the weeks throughout the holiday. It may be irrelevant to us gamers, but they sell plenty of video games, and whether they sell a lot compared to others is besides the point of the fact that almost every parent out there will know of this list, and Toy's R' Us, if their kids are between the ages of 1-15. Whether they actually buy at Toy's R' Us is of no concern to MS, the fact that this is a huge boost to visibility is.

But yeah, I'm sure your buying habits are indicative of the mass majority, so in your relating to the kids vernacular there blowing off my argument, my bad.

I go to TRU often for collectibles and right up front they have a big sign saying to pre-order the Xbox1 with $20 down. No mention of the PS4. Out of curiosity I asked if they were accepting PS4 pre-orders, they weren't because they sold out.....so hahaha. and then stated that they have people calling them all the time about when they will get more preorders in. and they have plenty of xbox1's to preorder. so im guessing they will not put something in there ad they cant guaranty .

Toy's R' Us' Hot list each holiday season is a pretty big thing here in the US. Supposedly they are the biggest representation of what will be hot that holiday season, so parent clamor to get things that make it onto their lists.

PS4 is on the list too, just not the top 15(used to be 10). Wii U was also in the fab 15 last year, and we all know how well that went. This list is just a marketing thing going to either the highest bidder, or whoever buys the space first(not sure which). While it's usually fairly accurate, look at some of the things on that list, and tell me kids would be dying to have half of them in such numbers to even be considered to the list.

As far as some of those other things on that list, keep in mind that these toys(or things) are for a large demographic of kids, which is why you see a broad range of items that cater to different age groups and genders.

Toy's R' Us claims it's based on metrics on demand they see leading up to the holiday season, but anyone with half a brain can see that the PS4 is wildly more popular, even among the "regular" gamers.

It is important for MS though, as it's easy exposure in something that any parent is likely to see between now and Christmas day. That kind of exposure is brought, and rarely earned.

Pre-order is not 100 percent of their stock that will be distributed to gamers on launch day. Nor represents any of the subsequent restocks.

Because of the low allotment of consoles, even though PS4 is crushing Xbox One pre-orders, aren't they basically in the same position? So why would that mean the Xbox One (which WILL have the SMALLEST number of units btw) is in a position to be on this list and PS4 isn't?

At first, I thought it had to do with availability, but I saw an ad (I think 2 weeks ago) advertising both (xbox one and ps4) for purchase come November in a Walmart flyer. And I remember reading an article awhile back about PS4s being held back so they can be "instock" for holiday purchase off the shelf beyond just preorders which I found shocking. I thought it would be difficult to get a system this year unless you preordered.

Anyways, maybe it has to do with xbox one packing in the kiddie-friendly Kinect although there doesn't seem to be too many relatively kiddie friendly(Knack?,Drive Club?, OctoDad? on PS4 or Forza 5? on xbox one) choices on either console. And the lack of a pure kinect game (kinect sports rivals got delayed til 2014) hurts the casual crowd.

At least ps4 owners get that playroom game free- they just have to buy the ps4 camera.

M$ is quite about Kinect games for the most part, and is leaving it up to developers to promote their own games. But Just Dance; Zoo Tycoon; a Disney game; The Fighter within; and I am sure there are more that I missed.

Despite what you've heard from various PR campaigns ("Amazon!" "Millions of pre-orders!") the PS4 is still the under dog in the US, especially among retailers.

Now the rest of the world is a different story.

So yeah, the massive hate campaign and witch hunt ("Xbone!" "Marketer!") that came after E3 had little or no effect on the outside world. I would even say that it backfired on those behind the whole effort.

Note: There are almost 900 TRU stores in the US, not including hundreds of "seasonal stores" that open in malls just for the holidays.

Here's a little bit of a tip: instead of needing explicit proof, smart people are able to draw rather accurate inferences based on the information given to them.

If the internet and preorder numbers didn't matter, Microsoft wouldn't have changed anything. If one of that mattered, less "hardcore" people than us wouldn't have known about MS's policies until they went to buy the system. The witch hunt, as you call it, was effective enough that there's no longer a need to have you XB1 online every 24 hours. It's the reason they fixed that horrible trade-in policy they were gonna have.

Whether you wanna say Microsoft listened to their consumers, or they saw the preorder numbers weren't looking good, the complaints that got things changed started at places like NeoGAF and, yes, N4G. The general public- the "outside world"- knew about it because we got the message to them.

If you've got some other, better explanation for why Sony has such an overwhelming lead, and why Microsoft is working so hard to improve their standing with gamers, I'd love to hear it. Like most people, though, you'll likely do as you just did and say it's all fanboys. Ironically, that would disprove your comments about the internet not affecting the outside world, but I don't expect you to let something like contradictions stop you.

Bad rap after the 32x/SegaCD & then the Saturn, mixed with first minute release (Came on stage at E3, first announcement of Dreamcast, then say suprise, it is on store shelfs now) even 90% of 3rd party devs didn't know about it til it was out, so hardly any games for it. Nobody had a chance to save up for it and everyone who did have money was already planning the money for the PS2s release. Then to top it all off, there was a near complete lack of post release advertising so unless you were at E3 when it was announced, it was 50/50 at best you even knew the thing existed until after it had already failed.

First, this ad was probably put together months ago. But more so, between PS4 and Xbox One, I'd say Xbox One would appeal more to kids. My 5 year old can play several games on Kinect, but there isn't anything she can play on PS3 other than a port of the old Spyro game. The fact that XB1 is the only console on the TrU hot list is very important. It says to parents that this console is kid friendly. From a marketing standpoint this is both good and bad.

the common conception of this generation was this

nintendo was for kids
XB360 was for tweens and teens
PS3 was for college kids and Adults

This is not just my opinion but often the sales pitch i would here in retail stores when people were trying to buy consoles. (this is not to say that those age brackets don't get crossed)

XB1 being the only console on this list says to parents buy me for your kids. There-by narrowing their target market for the holiday season. This is not a completely good sign for MS. This could mean that the exiting generations console conceptions are about to carry over to the new one.

this is not new. Every time i go any retailer i always notice almost nothing for ps3 ect ... Yet there is Giant Halo 4 sign or anything related to xbox 360. Fred myers in the state, Best buy pretty much all of them, Most store have 4 or 5 row or 360 games vs 2 for ps3 and vita together.

I worked management at TRU when i came out of college. The top 100 list is decided on a few things. Not doubting that money played a part in X1 making top 100 which most wouldn't know. But alot has to do with stock/alotment. If microsoft is guaranteeing a substantial supply of x1's, (which will most likely sell as a direct competitor to ps4), TRU stands to gain. Contrary to belief, retailers do not make a high margin on hardware... its the bundles, software, and especially accessories that bring in the BETTER margins.

Also as some mentioned on this thread, this is significant because TRU is the largest toy retailer in the world (400+ stores in US plus 200 abroad formerly. They did downsize some years ago). I can't understand why Sony didn't angle this move.

One thing that concerned me is the ability to stock the consoles by both sony & microsoft. Sony's launch a week earlier could prove a benefit to X1 because typical impatience. When PS4 sells out day one, what happens to the people who still want the next gen console who are not able to satisfy that Call of Duty and Battlefield itch? Do they move over to buying an X1? Remember retailers could give a rats ass about loyalty... whichever console is in stock will be influenced on the customer.

That is another overlooked by many of the fanboys on both sides. Who has the advantage with the suppliers? Which console has the advantage in terms of production time? The logistics of getting products from assembly line to store shelves always determines who wins the holidays. I remember ps3 and ppl waiting a month to get a system. Ppl selling systems for $1500 on craigslist. Lets see what lessons were learned.

This is why PS3 people are insecure... because Microsoft are masters of marketing. Especially in America. They use mass market partnerships. ESPN, Mountain Dew, Doritos, HBO, Toys R Us, Gamestop... combine this with constant TV ads during the fall (all those live action adds they bought in exchange for semi exclusive DLC)

And it works. Maybe not for "hardcore gamers" but on mass market joe sixpacks it works. That's a big part of why the 360 took the US by storm.

As an old school ps/nintendo fan, this is a new kinda warfare to me. I mean , 500 million to launch kinect. That's a staggering number.
