So, what? We're supposed to call for the heads of anyone who mentions "misogyny" in relation to GTA5? Because, I hate to break it to everyone..but that word is cropping up a fair bit in reviews I've read for GTA5. And as reviews are opinions, if the level of misogyny in the game was something that turned a reviewer off, I think it's their duty as a reviewer to explain this and review accordingly. That's what reviews are for.

Jim Sterling didn't give a perfect score for the game either because he found the main characters somewhat unlikable. That's his opinion. I don't agree with every review I read so what I do is find a reviewer who's opinions generally line up with my own and then those of the reviewers I tend to lend weight to when deciding which game to buy. It's not rocket science.

If someone reviews a racing game and bashes it for not having a story, guess what...chances are I'm not going to put much stock in their reviewers. It doesn't make their opinion somehow invalid. Opinions are opinions. You agree with them or you don't.

If she found the sexism a problem in the game, I'm glad she mentioned it because that's what game reviewers are about, the reviewers opinion. If the level of sexism bothered a reviewer of a movie I'd expect them to mention it too. She seemed more bothered by the character inconsistency, but all in all she seemed to really like the game. I don't understand what the big deal is here.

It's days like this where the level of stupidity on display by so called "gamers" just leaves me shaking my head, just like the Diablo 3 petitions, just like the Mass Effect 3 nonsense. Just play the goddamned game.

There should be a strategic scale based on Do's and Dont's for each genre, with each topic scaled from 1 to 10, from graphics, to performance, to quality and quantity, not directly compared to ANY previous games, but just to its own identity.

I am surprised there is not a single reviewer out there who follows the same system for ANY game, based on the same criteria that makes up his complete strategy for reviewing.

There should be someone like this, more simply, a go to reviewer that throws all opinion out the window and bases the game on what it is.

The treatment of characters IS part of the game. Anyone suggesting otherwise is lying to themselves. For this game to pretty much treat women as objects, that WILL turn people off. To the people that would turn off, this review would speak to them. The game is said to be 35 hours long just in story, if someone would be bothered by sexism, then they would want to know that it's in there.

If reviewers listened to half of you, there would be literally no reason for more than 1 game site to review a game, because they would all say almost the exact same thing. Reviews shouldn't, and never will be, objective. To review it subjectively would make reviews nearly pointless.

There is a backlash over this for the simple fact that people have, over time, been conditioned to look at reviews as a form of "cheerleading," when in reality, they exist solely to present perspective.

A woman playing a game that contains violence towards women may very well be more sensitive to that sort of thing than a man. While we, as men, don't necessarily have to agree with or relate to that sentiment, it still presents us with a perspective that we would otherwise never have considered.

If you want completely objective articles and media, you need to look to previews, screenshots and videos wherein there is no subjective input, but in a perfect world, people should be able to read and consider dissenting opinion without going into fits of nerd rage in the first place.

The problem is, she's inserting her feminazi view of a game targeted towards a largely male audience. It's like someone giving Battlefield 4 or Call of Duty Ghosts a bad review complaining that it's racist towards middle eastern people, because you happen to be fighting people in the middle east. It's politically correct bullshit, and these people need to stop waving their PC wands around, forcing their opinions on everyone else. It doesn't belong in an objective review where discussions about gameplay, graphics, mechanics etc should take first priority over whether a particular reviewer's personal taste matches up with the taste of the creators.

This is art, and art is not meant to be inoffensive. Art is not supposed to be safe, and PC, protecting any and all sensitivities of any personal group who might get offended. Sometimes art is meant to be offensive, and make you think about things. Sometimes the characters in art are meant to be racists, or misogynists, they are imperfect as we are all imperfect. This is what makes GTA so compelling, the characters are all imperfect going through their own struggles like we all are, they're not perfect superheroes with a moral compass that's higher than the rest of us.

This is art, don't shit on it because you don't like some of the characters or their decisions.

The whole point of a review is its someone perspective on a game and you read it to get an idea of what the game may be like. From what I can see she had her complaints but overall rated it 9/10, which you can hardly say is docking points for her femminist viewpoint is it? Not exactly. IVanSpinal never said 10 hours in 1 sitting and might just be someone who has a review copy that has to play more than 20 minutes to do said review accurately.

GTA IV has a 98/100 on Metacritic, yet it isn't uncommon to see people saying it wasn't that good on N4G / forums. Believe it or not, there is a point where ANYTHING no matter how good, can become overrated by people constantly enforcing the idea that it's the best thing in the known universe to you.

See 50 outlets give it a perfect score and your expectations are high. Have everyone you know tell you it's the best game ever and your expectations are even higher. To put it another way, go read all the praise for Breaking Bad and then rewatch the first episode blocking out all the information you know (if any) of the series after that point. Most likely you won't think it's the greatest thing in the history of man kind and even after a few episodes you might not be hooked because the bar is set so high.

The opposite is also true, but I won't get into that.

Others have pointed out that a point was NOT deducted for this reason, so that doesn't seem to be the case.

How is she in the wrong? The game came in conflicts with her beliefs, and journalistic integrity dictates that you need to mention that when you review something. A review is all opinion, and something like this falls under that umbrella. By their very nature, reviews are meant to be disagreed with. If you don't like her style, go the fuck to another one of the million gaming websites out there.

GTA games are a satire of contemporary American pop culture, apparently GTAV nails it perfectly, it's pop culture in general which portrays women in this light.

Reading the review, I didn't for a second feel that she was shoving her attitudes of political correctness on us though. She commented on it, as many other reviewers have, and she thought it was a bit much and didn't serve the story or satirical nature of the game. IGN mentioned something similar, but they felt it was serving the game's satirical nature. I don't think she went about it in a manner that was "in your face" at all.

As I mentioned before, if a movie used sexism to the point that it the reviewer deemed it over the top and did nothing to serve the story or themes of the movie, I would expect them to mention that because that's what I want when I read a review...the honest opinion of the reviewer.

What I find interesting about all this is the problem seems to be this opinion is coming from a woman. I don't see anyone having a problem with the other reviewers who caution the game is a bit over the top with it's misogyny, and there are a number of reviews out there that mention this. I think if the reviewer believes that an element of the game is overdone to the point that it's a needless distraction, they owe it to their readers to mention it. Doesn't matter if it's over the top sexism or heavy reliance of QTE's. If it has an impact on how much they enjoyed the game, it should be mentioned.

In the end, she seemed no more concerned about this than she was with the inconsistency of the characters at time and still highly recommended the title.

Screw that. It's not scored criminally low and a majority of us haven't even played it to voice an opinion against her. I wouldn't say anything negative about someone scoring TLOU 9/10 or even if they scored it 9.8 etc. Generally speaking, an amazing games score doesn't matter too much as long as it is above a 9. The .2's or the .5s are not really as important because we all know (generally speaking) it's a big free for all as far as quality games are concerned as to which ones are the best. A game scores a 9.2 and another gets 9.6. In this day and age we can realistically expect that the 9.2 game has a shot at being better anyway. 9 out of 10 is not a low score. It's up there.

(I'm not saying an 8/10 game can't be seen as better than a 9.3 game either... I'm just talking generally as far as these big games are concerned).

If you were offended by the rape of an underage girl in RapeLay, then of course you're going to mention it in a review. That would be something that readers might want to know about. I know that's a pretty extreme example, but the point still stands.

Hell, Destructioud's own Jim Sterling was offended by one of the ending levels of Duke Nukem Forever because he interpreted it as a rape analogy, but nobody really batted an eyelid at that. Grand Theft Auto is a satire of modern America, in modern America it has to be said that a lot of people who aren't white males are treated like shit. The America that GTA games portray is meant to be biting satire, but people rarely come away from it realising the message that the game was trying to convey. Just like in this. I got the game early and I've played most of the story at this stage and it isn't too different from previous GTA games when it comes to its portrayal of women. Firstly, playing as a female character would not be very believable as the majority of people who perform criminal acts such as heists and car theft happen to be male. Secondly, what's the moral difference between killing prostitutes and killing any other npc in the game, male or female? Thirdly, the game does not mock females more than it does males. Misogyny, and content in general is very subjective. It may not be to the taste of some, but others may like its presence.
The game should not be docked on what moral stances it takes (would you dock the Witcher for "misogyny"? One man might hat the cards, but others have loved them), it should be judged on the more objective parts of it.
Graphics, gameplay, customisability, overall strength of the writing (even if the game was professing the merits of serial killing, this writing should be judged objecvtively) and other things.

I'm not sure if this woman should be sacked, but she should be, without a doubt forced to rescore the game not taking into account what she perceives as misogyny.

The fact she mentions it, and that it is not to her taste is fine, but as a personal opinion, it should not affect the objective overall score she gives the title.

Omg stop. Violence is a part of human nature. I've been playing violent games and watching violent movies and content my whole life and in the real world I can't stand violence. People are violent because we treat eachother like shit and push eachother down just to get ahead. Humans are naturally competitive, which invokes hate. I certainly don't think those criticisms have a place in a professional review meant to inform the average gamer of the strengths and weaknesses of the game, but I don't feel very strongly about it.

The rest of the points beyond the one opinionated about politics and misogyny bit are valid and the score is something I honestly believe gamers shouldn't give the slightest thought to. I'll take those relevant points for what they are and ignore the rest. Critics say stupid things like this all the time, though it typically passes the notice of mainstream attention.

Of course people get upset when all reviewers give it 95 and above. Low scores actually lower the total score of the game and it isn't fair in this case where literally EVERYBODY gave the game a top score.

GTAIV was not worth a total of 98 on Metacritic (my opinion) but GTAV definitely is a 98/100 game and this hag might've ruined it.

You should never let a review affect your game playing pleasures. If your interested in a game play it who cares if it receives poor reviews or great reviews. The only thing that matters is if you like it or not. Don't ever let someone else tell you what games to play and what to avoid, b/c you may miss some hidden gems based on some review written by a person you don't even know.

Everyone also has to take into account this is from a woman's perspective. The obvious mysogeny in the game will affect her and other females more the "guys". This review might help female gamers decide if this is a game that they might want. Also, why should she or any other reviewer just gloss over the moral issues of a game just because it's called GTA? It's not a reviewers job to say "I didn't like something but others might so I will give it a 10." A reviewer must give their opinion of the game. If there was something that detracted from his/her enjoyment they need to be vocal about it, so others are aware of what might be an issue for them as well. I thought it was an excellent reviews.

Oh no, it ONLY got a 9/10. Quick call the police. Who cares, should any game really deserve a 10 anyways? A game that gets a 10 states that it's the best game ever created. No game should ever be awarded that, or if it is, then no game again should receive a 10. 10 means perfection in every way. As an African American it feels really embarrassing to here the 'N' word over and over and over. Especially when you know the game was made by white people and is going to be played by millions of white people. This game is a reflection of just how a lot of white people view black people it's downright sick and embarrassing. All of the white characters can speak complete sentences that are not laced with cuss words. I don't know, hard pill to swallow. I suppose it's easy to digest if you are not Black. Got this game some hours ago and so far I'm having a blast. This game is not only well-crafted and fun but also hilarious, and they don't need dildo-swords for that!
But I agree with her, all the women I've seen in this game (for now) are portrayed as whining and/or trouble-making b*tches.
