Quietly Rocking the Boat: Metal Gear Solid V and Controversy in Gaming Culture

Eric from GamR Mag Writes: "There have been quite a few contesting opinions over these images from both gamers and developers from other studios. This is to be somewhat expected as the gaming world has become somewhat explosive when it comes to the portrayal of women in games with the controversy over the Cyberpunk 2077 trailer and its depiction of a scantly clad woman on her knees being shot at, Adam Sessler’s criticism over a trophy title in the most recent God of War title, and Anita Sarkeesian’s series of videos analyzing the role of women in various games."

I have absolutely no problem with this character model ...that's why we love Kojima in the first place, isn't it? He goes beyond those borders that others wouldn't even touch with a stick and he already said that we'll see a lot of this stuff in the game.
And up to now I think that all MGS characters, no matter how they looked or behaved, fit into the story quite well and didn't make it feel "cheap".

cleft53880d ago (Edited 3880d ago )

The real problem is that people are judging a character, a game, and a country based solely off of an image. We have no context for these images, we have no understanding of what they mean, yet a ton of "well respected" people are screaming that this is just more sexist smut.

The core basis of almost every Disney movie or moral story is not to judge someone based on an image along. Despite this people have leaped up in droves to talk about how sexist MGSV is without knowing a thing about it. In what way is that ever okay? Or is it different because you are prejudging a sexy female character model as oppose to someone that is a minority or not good looking. People really need to think about the things they say before they jump to these wild conclusion that only serve to hurt people who really are going through something that is sexist or racist.

Roccetarius3880d ago (Edited 3880d ago )

What i find ridiculous, is how he mentioned the character in relation to Cosplay and Figurine sales. No update can remove that from the internet, and it shows what his thinking originally was.

The recent article about Bayonetta being sexier is different, because it's not blatantly used like Kojima is doing.

Maddens Raiders3880d ago (Edited 3880d ago )

Now we know why her ass isn't bigger and jucier. Good thinking Kojima.

dark-hollow3880d ago

If kojima hadn't teased the character model by showing us a shot of her ass only, nobody would be outraged.

Quiet design is very tame compared to other video games characters who nobody complained about.

Pancit_Canton3880d ago

They should have put Sunny(Grown up legal age of course) instead of her. *Puts on sunglasses* YEAH!!!

GrandpaSnake3880d ago

quiet is very cool imo. She really captures the essence of stephanie, i like her and kojimas choice was great. I think she looks sexier than sniper wolf and looks the right sexy, at least she didnt look like the girl in dragons crown right!

Now we'll have to see how much the Master Collection will add to those numbers.

Number1TailzFan172d ago

Too bad it was a lazy release. They could've updated the visuals and everything. Missed opportunity.

Stanjara172d ago

...and yet, they couldn't give more respect and effort into the collection.
What a terrible company.

Minute Man 721172d ago (Edited 172d ago )

Are they counting every game?

Edit: they did

Nyxus172d ago

Yes, these are total lifetime sales of the entire series.

ApocalypseShadow172d ago

.... mostly with the help of PlayStation.

Yea I don’t get why they’re allowing old reviews to be posted here. Someone did one on Soul Reaver and I got so excited thinking there was some stealth release of an HD Remaster, but no… it’s just someone who had a slow day posted an old review…

Cacabunga188d ago

I liked the game but for me it felt somehow like a military simulator rather than a proper MGS.. i got bored of that

micdagoat19188d ago

I do wish they would remaster all the soul reavers

micdagoat19188d ago

it was done this morning though

goldwyncq188d ago

The author was in a coma for 9 years and didn't get to play the game when it released.

Chocoburger188d ago

This review arrived just in time for launch. Perfect timing!

RupeeHoarder188d ago

Amazing how bad this game looks already. We keep acting like this gen doesn't feel like an update but I think we're starting to see it.

YourMommySpoils188d ago

Looks better than Starfield, Cyberpunk and most recent games out. Still fine.

RupeeHoarder188d ago

It most certainly does not lol.

andy85188d ago

Have you player Cyberpunk since the first day? It's absolutely stunning now

One of the worst games ever made. Absolute overhyped trash!

Snowb420188d ago

The gameplay was great. It was the tacked on open world and repetitive missions that messed the game up.

Shane Kim188d ago

The game started really strong in that hospital, but after a couple of hours I wondered if it was even an mgs game I was playing.

KyRo187d ago

The hospital section was the only bit that felt like a MGS game.

MGS4 was the ending for me. I totally ignore the fact 5 exists. It didn't need to exist tbh
