Killer Instinct Hands-on - "terrific way to show off the Xbox One’s power" | Player Effort

Microsoft’s presence wasn’t going to be ignored at Fan Expo 2013. They showed up with their new next generation console, the Xbox One, along with six demos to try out. I managed to get my hands on the Killer Instinct, the remake of the Rareware classic fighting game under the same name.

"Waiting for the final roster of characters is going to be difficult because what I’ve seen so far is nothing short of brilliant. The videos I had seen of the game don’t do it justice but, in person the game is completely different beast."

can't wait to download this game and start playing.

Ultraaaaaaaaaaa Combooooooo haha I still remember playing this game on my Nintendo Console should be fun times

Enemy3877d ago (Edited 3877d ago )

Terrific? Hardly. It's 720p doing 60fps, exactly what every fighting game did this gen.

I'm just saying, fighting games are hardly a terrific way. Neither are games like Forza, which don't model environments in 3D. The tracks in Forza are completely static. If the frame rate was any lower than 60fps, it'd be a pure embarrassment.

Also, people putting their faith in Double Helix should have a quick look at their past games.

XB1_PS43877d ago (Edited 3877d ago )

@enemy Yeah their past games are pretty shit. Still have my fingers crossed. Too much nostalgia for me not to get excited for a KI game.

From what I see now, it looks great. Who knows, they could very well turn into a good dev company. They're still Indie as of now.

@ enemy

SHow me another 20 dollar games that looks that good..

UltimateMaster3877d ago

@4logpc

Tekken Revolution, which is free.
Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Mortal Combat, Tekken Hybrid, pretty much any Tekken/Soul Calibur Games after a few months are at 20$ or lower than 20$.

What? You wanted an answer, right?

Killer Instincts does look good, btw.

creatchee3877d ago

@UltimateMaster

I disagreed with you because you spelled Mortal Kombat with a "C". Unforgivable for a gamer. :)

With all due respect to Double Helix, I think that while KI will look good on Xbox, I don't think it will really show the power of the system. Forza 5 has way more going on and runs at 1080P 60FPS, while KI is at 720P right now. I believe that other projects will show way more potential than these launch titles.

WrAiTh Sp3cTr33877d ago

It's free to play so the budget may be slight. The way they've talked about it though, it seem it may evolve...

specialguest3877d ago

He had a flat top hairstyle back then, and if they plan to modernize him, they can still keep the same flat top. It's actually back in style for the young hip black guys.

ma1asiah3877d ago (Edited 3877d ago )

I know people have been complaining about the lack of characters at launch. Even though this is a digital only XBL arcade title not a fullblown retail game for the X1.

Yet come on it's KI, it maybe nostalgia but there is seriously nothing anyone can say that is going to stop me from getting KI.

If its available at launch I will be getting the ultra pack.

- the one that gives you the starting 6 charaters plus the other 2 characters releasing at some stage a little while afterwards, all the alternate costumes etc and the original KI game.

Not sure when they will let us buy the season 2 pass for the other 8 characters that will be available this time next year....but will be getting that as well.

What can I say if it plays like I remember, or as good as it looks, then this will be my number one go to fighting game for a very long time.

I will be rolling Spinal just wish they would show some gameplay footage but if the ones revealed so far are anything to go by it will be worth the wait.

Mystogan3877d ago

Damn straight. And we don't even have to pay for the full game right away. I can see this become THE fighting game on Xbox.

ma1asiah3877d ago

Plus the characters will be on rotation for those who want to try them all before any kind of monetary commitment.

So it remains free or you can just buy whatever charaters you want or get the whole lot etc.

don't see any negatives.

"This fighting game displays the console's true power," said no one ever.

Gah just give me KI already!

Mario183877d ago

Lol a fighter game is a really bad example to show what a console or pc can do Just saying...

Lovable3877d ago

Haha My sentiments exactly...

Scatpants3877d ago

Everything I've seen of it looks like it could be on Xbox360

Mkai283877d ago (Edited 3877d ago )

Hmm.. You "gamers" need to really stop. It just shows that you are not supportive to the gaming industry..

I feel like those screenshots solidify his statement. That looks like a current generation game.

HugoDrax3877d ago (Edited 3877d ago )

@Mkai28

Damn! That 2nd image looks amazing!

@WeAreLegion

Really? I beg to differ, all I see on this site from gamers is "LOOKS this, and LOOKS that" Damn! Just play games, and stop whining about visuals. If gamers complained about visuals in the 80's, the industry would have never produced the classics it already has.

I'm just saying, as a professional graphic designer I don't base my choice of games on visuals alone. Yes I love appealing aesthetics, but gameplay is the most important determining factor for me.

Scatpants3876d ago

The article is about how the game shows off the power of the xbox one. If they arent talking about looks then what do you think theyre talking about, how it smells?

KonsoruMasuta3877d ago

Not really. It just depends on the game.

I mean, seriously. Think of a true next gen fighter. One that's 60 fps and 1080p. One with fluid character movement and detailed enviorments that you can interact with. One with fully destructible stages.

I drool at the thought.

buynit3877d ago

What are you saying?? You dont play fighting games, you play specs?! Lol

Hicken3877d ago

I think he's saying that fighting games rarely-if ever- push a console to its limits. And considering there's apparently been some issues with framerate and/or resolution for KI, this statement must be questioned.

MASTER_RAIDEN3877d ago

meh...its really starting to get annoying to see all these people talk about showing off a consoles "power". you know they say it just to get quoted.
if i were buying an x1, and killer instict was a retail game, it would be my very first purchase. that said though, lets be honest- the game doesnt look that much better than the now ancient sf4. sure it runs without hiccups and has an interesting art style, but its definitely not a display of the xbox ones potential by any means.

nothing against the xbox one or KI. i just really dislike how every single piece of software nowadays "shows off the consoles power" in some obscure way thats not really there.

DaGR8JIBRALTAR3877d ago (Edited 3877d ago )

spoken like a man with intelligence...because if this is a representation of x1's power...we're all FUKCED!

Barlos141d ago

I'll have to get this! Been a big fan of KI since the very first one.

Petebloodyonion141d ago (Edited 141d ago )

I love KI (still play the old arcade version) but feel like the Xbox version is like a big intimidating chessboard with no easy way to instruct you to play chess.
The game is so deep in terms of little things to do that it makes Smash Bros melee look like a casual experience.
Honestly, doing a combo Breaker is punish/reward by itself but hey you can add a counterbreaker.
Here's what you also need to know
Breaking Shadow-linker
Instincts
Shadow counter
Auto double,
linker, manual
ender
etc,

There isn't going to be any chance of this being played at tournaments unless it appears on all platforms like all fighting games.

SPEAKxTHExTRUTH145d ago

SF5 didn’t appear on all consoles and was still played at Tournaments. I’ve seen KI tournaments recently so I don’t think your opinion is accurate.

Killer Instinct: Worth Another Look at 10 Years Old

A free-to-play fighting game? This was unheard of at the time, but Killer Instinct has proven it's not only doable, but enjoyable!
