Is The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt maxing out next-gen consoles already?

The Witcher 3 developer CD Projekt RED has previously claimed that the RPG maxes out PS4 and Xbox One tech already. Ray Willmot checks out the game’s latest build and quizzes the studio to see if it’s true.

Whahahaha...that was a good one. The ONLY developers that will EVER max out the ps4 is ND.

hankmoody3879d ago

Um, no. There are plenty of capable developers out there who can use their talents. That's not to knock Naughty Dog at all, by the way.

ooquis3879d ago (Edited 3879d ago )

Lets wait and c ND first game.

mewhy323879d ago

LOL well I'm sure they're pushing the pitiful bone to the max but that'll leave them plenty of breathing room on the PS4. Hopefully they'll take full advantage of the PS4 and not be held back by the inferior bone.

thisismyaccount3878d ago

First party developers usually get the best "pipelines, tools etc.." for their project. Everyone else below that list, gets updated PS3 tools (using same library more or less)or "basic" PS4 ones (not optimized at all).

EA and Co. will have to spent some time on their own for a new engine.

starchild3878d ago

The Witcher 3 looks utterly amazing and it is no wonder that it is maxing out the capabilities of the consoles.

I'll be playing it on the PC where I will be able to transfer over my saves and enjoy the highest quality graphics. Nvidia is working with CD Projekt Red to bring exclusive graphical features to the PC version. It will be great on any platform in any case.

What a misguided and idiotic statement.

Back on topic here, I'd say No they haven't maxed them out yet. Not even close. What they MAY have done is max out their current capabilities/knowledge of developing for the systems. As we all know, launch titles vs what comes out 2-5yrs down the road are infinitely prettier and more robust because they learn how to do things better as time goes on.

malokevi3879d ago

Lol. The fanatical devotion to Naughty Dog on this website is unbelievable. Yes, they make good single player cinematic experiences. No, they aren't the only capable developer on the planet.

It's a matter of optimization. Any developer can max out the system. It's a matter of maxing it out while using every bit of processing power to its fullest potential. As new toolsets emerge, developers will improve optimization and consequently visual fidelity will improve.

Not to say that the Witcher isn't the prettiest next gen game I've seen. Because it is.

Axonometri3879d ago (Edited 3879d ago )

No. They can do this. It's all in the scaling. If they keep assets really high level... It would likely max out the new consoles. Look to Mid level PC right now. Keep options high and resolution high and newer engines cripple mid level PC.

That is what new consoles are looking at. The great thing about this is it brings out superior optimizations and techniques.

Naughty Dog is also a top Tier developer. Giving them the headroom over the PS3 with new console will unlock their talents.

In PS3 Crysis 3 looks better than all exclusives games from Naughty dog. Anyways, it's is really too soon for say PS4 is already maxed out.

Not this again...

Sure you can "max out" the cpu and gpu loads but that doesn't mean you have full optimization of a system.

Devs claiming to max out a system within even the first three years of a consoles live cycle is idiotic.

Fergusonxplainsall3879d ago

I agree , the more time developers get to work on the new systems and get to optimize graphics settings to the fullest will be further down the road.

Games grow just as much as anything else. So expect shaders, textures and lighting to get optimized even more in the next three years as new ways to utilize these features will be expanded. You will see advanced GFX that utilize less resources in time.

GiggMan3879d ago

Yep.... Until the next game makes the same claim lol.

Irishguy953879d ago

Here come the fanboys to talk about stuff they know nothing about. The Ps4 and X1 are PC's(with an APU design). It will not take years for them to figure out how they work properly. Optimization will have minimal effect this gen. Deal with it.

Now in saying that, better game engines and coding are always gonna pop up. And up there to ND claims, Crytek and DICE are the ones who push hardware. I guess you don't know the difference between performance and which game has better graphics though right?

The 7 Best Western RPGs: Immersive Adventures

RPGs are often huge, sprawling endeavours. With limited playtime, we have to choose wisely, so here's the best western RPGs available today.

SimpleSlave13d ago

"I started playing games yesterday" the List... Meh!

How about a few RPGs that deserve some love instead?
1 - Alpha Protocol - Now on GOG
2 - else Heart.Break()
3 - Shadowrun Trilogy
4 - Wasteland 2
5 - UnderRail
6 - Tyranny
7 - Torment: Tides of Numenera

And for a bonus game that flew under the radar:
8 - Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

DustMan13d ago

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.

Infinite but not the first two games? Witcher 3 but not the first two games?? GTA V but not literally any of the games before it??? Portal 2 but not the first? Also if you're going to play Shadow of The Colossus play the remaster and not the remake. Can't say I disagree with the list but my man it's all over the place.

Name Last Name37d ago

I mean some sequels are objectively better and you don’t need to play the whole series.

Inverno37d ago

But most of these games have a story to follow, sure you can catch up with a YouTube vid but where's the fun in that?

LucasRuinedChildhood37d ago (Edited 37d ago )

A list like this isn't telling you not to play the previous games if you want to. It's just giving you legendary games to play.

But tbh, you don't always have to force yourself to play every entry in a franchise to get to the better ones.

- The vast majority of Witcher 3 players never played the first 2 and had a great time. The first 2 games aren't in the same league.
- The GTA games are self-contained with the odd fun reference. You can easily jump into any of them.
- The Shadow Of The Colossus remake looks and controls better than the original (plus it has a 60fps option while the remaster is just 30fps). New players will enjoy it more.
- Portal 2 is a lot better than Portal 1 and takes the concept much further gameplay-wise. Storywise, Portal 1 is fairly light too. Not that you shouldn't play it but realistically ... you'd love Portal 2 whether you play it or not (at lot of Portal 2 players have never played 1).

Bioshock 1 is the only one I agree with you on simply because it's one the best games of all time and arguably better than Infinite. No other setting like Rapture.

Looking at the list, I'd recommend playing Uncharted 1 before 2 but no doubt, 2 is the legendary one you have to play.

Inverno37d ago

I get it, but that's just my opinion on his opinion. I just think that before you play a sequel you should still play what came before it. Maybe it's just me but i find it fascinating playing through the first game in a series and seeing how it has evolved through its sequels. Like I said I don't disagree with the list, other than SoTC which I strongly believe the remaster of the original should be played above the remake.

AuraAbjure37d ago

Awesome list! Hot take on Fear (and it's hard af expansion Persaus Mandate!) Bioshock Infinite is stellar, so is the Witcher 3 and you nailed it by having Ocarina of Time. So many fantastic games! Gotta play 'em all! Next one on my list is Prey after I beat Dead Space 2 and Splinter Cell Conviction.
