What Some Big-Time Developers Think Of the PlayStation 4

Those who have had a chance to play around with Sony's latest console, the PS4, have been sharing their experiences and what they think about Sony's latest big black box with those of us who have not. But what about the developers? Those who are involved in making the software for us to enjoy — What do they think?

gaelic_laoch3879d ago (Edited 3879d ago )

I see the the PS4 is a big black box ready to be filled with their creative juices!!! The PS4 cant come quick enough for me!

Yea, but the way he says "big black box ready to be filled with their creative juices" it sounds soo pornstarish.

I hope developers keep coming with more and more creativity for the PS4. It will be my first next-gen console, might be my only next-gen platform.

"You have an idea, you try it out, and if it's good, you keep it, if it's not, you think of something else. By shortening this cycle, I believe PS4 games can be richer." -Mark Cerny

As for Shinji Mikami, he seems a little scared by the prospect of ps4! :D

In the words of Cerny easy to learn hard to master, and that's how you make a console stay relevant.

PS4 i buy you when you show me some good games like Titanfall, KZ looks good but not to buy a console, Infamous I never like them I wont risk it, KZ 2 and KZ3 controller aim sucks IDK if this one will be the same, right now X1 has a better line up, X1 Day One. But PS drones dont see it they been programmed.

Ps4 is a video game console & not a cable box..

Death3879d ago

Except for Netflix that doesn't require a gaming subscription. Not to mention the Blu-ray player for movies or the big Viacom deal Sony recently announced. http://www.forbes.com/sites...

So yeah, you're wrong.

Highlife3879d ago

He said "cable box"
err umm you know the useless feature of watching tv on your tv with a cable box and a cable box i mean console.

jXales3879d ago

Well, Ps4, doesn't have cable now does it?

netflix and blu ray are more on demand services. Cable is cable.

Death3879d ago

You guys are so crazy with your double speak. Neither the Xbox360 or Xbox one are a "cable box". They do allow users that subscribe to Time Warner to stream live tv via an app though at no extra charge. This is the very same technology as Sony will be using for their Viacom deal they announced. Instead of having a cable box, Viacom subscribers will be able to download the app and get tv content via their PS4 just like the Xbox360 and Xbox One do with Time Warner.

Wasn't that easy to understand when I walked you through it instead of having to click the link I provided?

Hicken3879d ago

You talk double speak when you're using false equivalencies?

Go figure.

A car isn't an air conditioner because it has that feature. It's still a car. And when you advertise it, you advertise it as a car.

Microsoft advertised their car as an A/C unit first, and a car second.

Sony did not.

No double speak needed. Just some common sense and general comprehension.

Highlife3879d ago (Edited 3879d ago )

@death
You do know that they showed the xbone hooked up to a cable box to show that you can watch live tv. Hence "cable box". You hook up your dvr to the xbone and get less from it as you can't watch your recorded shows or start a recording. So really what is the point just change inputs and have a full functioning dvr. The only thing that looks ok is the fantasy football stuff while watching tv but I have a phone app and a tablet for that anyway. The streaming apps are something completely different.

So I guess I will hold your hand now seeing as you are walking blind.

Death3879d ago (Edited 3879d ago )

@Hicken,

If your common sense is telling you that Microsoft is selling the XboxOne as an air conditioner and not a car...

Microsoft never advertised the XboxOne as a cable box. They announced their partnership with Time Warner the same as Sony announced theirs with Viacom.

@Highlife

The XboxOne has an HDMI in port. You can hook your cablebox, Xbox360, or PS4 to it if you like. That doesn't make the XboxOne a cablebox, 360, PS4 or for some people with common sense, an air conditioner. It simply gives you the ability to stay connected with your friends and still watch tv or play any device with an HDMI out through it.

I'm really not sure how this feature can be spun as being bad.

MysticStrummer3879d ago

"I'm really not sure how this feature can be spun as being bad."

Losing features when you run certain devices through the XB1 is bad.

There.

See how easy that was?

Death3879d ago

You guys and your bias are awesome.

When you run any device through the PS4 you lose all the features. What you are saying is having no HDMI in on the PS4 is better so you can either be on your PS4 or something else. With PS4 it's 100% games only no matter how many deals Sony makes with content providers or how many Netflix and Hulu's you put on it. It's all about games. It's beyond hypocrisy how you can say the PS4 is better since there is no paywall for Netflix and then say Sony focus's on games only. The "other" content is not behind a paywall, but the gaming is.

Want to watch tv without an app and still be connected to your friends so you can get an invite on screen? You are only doing it on one console. Being connected so you can game more is not better for gamers? You Sony faithfull are a fickle bunch.

Maybe N4G has really skewered my impression of Playstation gamers. The way I see it, the Xbox is a console for gamers. The Playstation is a console for Playstation fans.

XTGamers3879d ago

Except if you live outside the US, please dont fail to mention that, as you're so commited to explain the benefits of a cable box connected to XOne

JamieL3879d ago

Death man I'm with you 100%. These fools are on such a MS hate campaign they aren't even capable of understanding your simple point. They are convinced that because the XBone has an HDMI in and the PS4 doesn't, it automatically makes it a "stupid thing no REAL GAMER would want", the fact that the XBone can do something the PS4 can't really must really eat them up bad, which is weird because they say “keep that $hit out of my PS4”. Especially when it's for a feature (cable) they claim to have absolutely no interest in what so ever, but just can't stop themselves from coming into every article about a console they will never own, to bash a feature they don't want anyway. He was simple calling the attitude of “Less is better” on PS4, when it comes to this feature anyway. I agree with him, any bias that can make your opinion and arguments look this stupid, can’t be healthy.

ABeastNamedTariq3879d ago (Edited 3879d ago )

Looks like developers are starting to use that extra power already. That's a good thing.

EDIT:

"By increasing the memory, the freedom of design and expression increases. Characters and maps can be displayed in high quality. The SHARE button, the remote play capabilities, and the companion apps all allow for more freedom. It feels like the PS4 is saying to us, 'I've prepared an amusement park for you. Yes but can we actually see one being used by gamers please.

I've yet to find a video of one being used at either Gamescom or PAX by Joe Public. Please prove me wrong somebody. MS had loads of boxes lined up for the public and they even had them in a retail store being demoed.

I've not seen a PS4 yet working/loading/playing or whatever. All ive found is a guy playing driveclub at Gamescom and you cant see the console only the eye and DS4.

Gamefan123879d ago

then you didn't look well. It is there

Animal Mutha 763879d ago (Edited 3879d ago )

Can you or another member of this thread provide me a link then please.

I don't claim to be an expert at youtube but a few searches have not turned up what I seek. An actual physical PS4 in use and plain to see by gamers at one of the shows running games. All I can see is off screen footage where the DS4 is plugged into an unseen box. Even the killzone booth at pax didnt appear to have any live working consoles.

8 and counting disagrees but not one link. I'm happy to be proven wrong! I'm asking for help, not to show Sony up. What gives? does the thing exist?

Kayant3879d ago

^ Xbox retail units double up as devkits even if the function is not going to be available at launch they still here. Devkit functionality was switched on before running forza so it was running on a devkit atm.

JohnWayne_3879d ago

Heres a youtube video showing a ps4 hooked to a sony tv playing KZSF.

http://youtu.be/mH_MHfhm5ng

Animal Mutha 763879d ago (Edited 3879d ago )

Thanks very much for the link. Yes the camera shots are a lot closer in than the other vid I had seen.

It's a shame you cannot see more of the unit and proof that it is actually on and working with connections etc. They have really buried it in that large box and it's hard to see it. Not to start anything but was this all legit? I had read a rumour that some demos were on pcs and that the boxes shown were dummy display cases hence them being so concealed. I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt but the display did seem odd.

Thanks again for helping.

By the time I get to try PS4 at Eurogamer in London no doubt the hardware displays will be beyond doubt.

Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami has established a new company

Veteran video game developer Shinji Mikami has established a new company.

That’s according to a bio of the developer on the new Shadows of the Damned Hella Remastered website, which claims that Mikami has recently founded ‘Kamuy Inc’.

No details further details on the company have been shared. There is also no indication of what the company will do.

Shinji should never stop making games. Kinda crazy he left the funding of M$ though.

ApocalypseShadow26d ago

It's the enjoyment of independence since leaving Capcom that he probably likes. Your company, your rules.

Also, I don't think it's Microsoft's money that would have kept him around. The problem is their culture. We've seen more than once where individuals or teams wanted to leave Microsoft because of how they run things.

I don't think I've ever seen a developer at Nintendo or Sony that bought themselves out from being controlled. But we've seen it at Microsoft. Should be interesting what he decides to do next.

Chocoburger25d ago

I remember when it was announced that he was leaving Tango, someone on N4G claimed that he was old and it was time for him to retire.

I couldn't help but laugh at the ignorance. Mikami (like most Japanese people), do not want to work for Microsoft, they want their games to be played by their fellow citizens, which means Switch, Playstation, and PC. But this fool couldn't comprehend that. 🤣

Was waiting for his return announcement, glad to see that he's back! Please don't make mobile games.

-Foxtrot25d ago

I hope it's still survival horror

They should build on what they did with Evil Within for a new IP and take notes from the Evil Within sequel with those open hub areas.

Wouldn't mind if it was like Resident Evil but with a vampire virus instead.

Naoki Yoshida Discusses Who Should Direct Final Fantasy 17 and The Kind of Game He Wants to Do Next

Final Fantasy XIV and XVI Producer Naoki Yoshida discusses who could direct Final Fantasy XVII, which advice he'd give them, and what he'd like to do in the future.

Terry_B97d ago

Yup, someone else should direct the next Final Fantasy main series game.

Eonjay96d ago (Edited 96d ago )

During the interview he states that Final Fantasy is a series where each subsequent release is a intended to be be different than the one before it. I think that is an amazing and refreshing approach. The goal for each director is to make something they would enjoy.

Mtgames96d ago

As someone who played both Final Fantasy XIV and Final Fantasy XVI both games suffered from Yoshi P being siphoned back and forth. Endwalker is the weakest expansion compared to it others (but still grear on its own) and Final Fantasy XVI had WAY too many fetch quests which is lazy design.

On a positive note Final Fantasy XIV's new expansion has everything players wanted to come back and more. I am confident that no one was dissappointed. And the Final Fantasy XVI dlc has a different director giving players what we wanted. More lore on The Fallen and whats the deal woth Leviathan the Lost.

And no one got hurt.

Abriael96d ago (Edited 96d ago )

Lost me at "lazy."

Literally, the least appropriate (and most disrespectful) word to apply to game development is "lazy."

Also sorry, but I have to laugh at Endwalker being the "weakest" expansion. Only the whiniest FFXIV "influencers" really think that. And they're dead wrong. 😂

F0XHOUND96d ago (Edited 96d ago )

Endwalker, specifically 6.0 at least, was probably the greatest phase for the MSQ over the entire XIV story and was the perfect finale. This is also where Endwalker as a whole suffers for me, I felt the story ended perfect, and I just haven't been able to play beyond 6.1 and beyond due to lack of interest, it just felt like a great ending point to a story we have followed for years now. It was beautiful.

As for the content outside of MSQ, again, nothing new. Some interesting additions, island sanctuary etc and a stronger ultimate expansion than prior... the relic questline has been far too boring and streamlined. ALso, crafting as a whole since the merging of DC's to allow travel between servers has really killed any interest I had in that, purely my opinion of course.

The fact is, the game is starting to show its age, we have done raid mechanics a million times in different fights, they look epic, sure... but we need something fresh now. I do believe 7.x will start to attempt to fix this though. We have become far too greedy in expecting banger after banger per expansion... maybe endwalker as a whole can't stand alongside Heavensward, or Shadowbringers.... but for 6.0 alone, it's still one of the strongest additions to the Final Fantasy franchise as a whole, easily.

edit - I should probably finish endwalker tbf, before truly judging it. A somewhat new beginning will need time to feel more appealing compared to what 1.x - 6.0 felt like.

Mtgames95d ago

Fetch quests are peak lazy design.

Mtgames95d ago (Edited 95d ago )

CONSTANT fetch quests are peak lazy design. Out of all 76 of them only 6 were good and half of those were the "endings" of sidequests related to each other. Some of my favorite ones was getting access to areas only accessable via sidequests which there was a few of or when we got more lore; also few. Im my opinion we should have gotten half but more condesned. I do like the hunts. I took a screenshot after every beaten one.

And when it comes to Endwalker. It is the weakest expac COMPARED TO THE OTHERS IN FFXIV especially post content. Island Sactuary had potential but failed overall admit it. Crtiereon Dungeon should have came A LONG time ago now holding only special interest and the dev team doesnt know how to make it more popular. And as much influncers cen be total shills or haters they are right that the lack of midcore content in Endwalker is very distastful. Dont get me started on relic.

Speaking of lazy design
Give en example pleez if it exists to you.

Abriael95d ago (Edited 95d ago )

@Mtgames: Thanks for proving that you have been influenced by FFXIV's "influencers", which are pretty much some of the whiniest and most falsely entitled in the industry.

No, they're not right. They are in fact ludicrously wrong. The only reason that drives them is that they're constantly hungry for stuff to show, but they're completely detached by the needs to actual players, who have *plenty* of content to enjoy

Watchable and enjoyable are very different things. FFXIV influencers don't want enjoyable content. They want watchable content. They don't get enough, so they cry.

shinoff218396d ago

Mentions he doesn't want to pick a fight with the older games. Makes sense cause ff still don't hold up to what it used to. They haven't touched the greatness in new ff games that were there with 6 through 9(add 10 if you must).

CrimsonWing6996d ago (Edited 96d ago )

Man, I absolutely agree. I do think FF7 Remake has done a good transition from classic to modern.

What pisses me off is I look at games like Lost Odyssey, Persona, and Yakuza and clearly turn-based can still be done in modern times and can be quite successful.

I’d love to just see a classic turn-based FF game pushing visual fidelity and story telling to the limit with current-gen tech.

I hate this whole “we need to appeal to people who don’t like turn-based or Final Fantasy.” You alienate fans and you don’t rake in enough new fans.

shinoff218396d ago (Edited 96d ago )

Ff7 remake did a pretty good job for sure. I'm with you on that, a real old school ff experience with today's graphics would be so dope. Their ditching some of their audience chasing the young. It's been like that for years. These days I get more excited for squares re releases, remasters, and remakes then I do new stuff. Besides octopath.

MontyeKristo96d ago

Honestly. I haven't bought a FF game since.. idk 10 I think. I really dislike how they got a way from Turn Based battles. I'd much rather they do an alternate game using live action combat. Do something like FF: Tactics but call it FF: Freeform or something.

I enjoyed FF as a turn based game, I don't need the combat system they have in it now. Sigh.

-Foxtrot96d ago

Crazy to me that FFVII Remake has a battle system which feels like a modern approach to Final Fantasy yet they don't want to use something similar for the main title games.

Like you said Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Persona, Like a Dragon can do turn based and they are fantastic games so why can't FF? It will still sell regardless

Do they think people will see turn based combat and go "Ew. Not buying"

Adrian_v0195d ago

It's highly subjective. The last great FF to many was FF XII. I personally hated FF IX even tho I'm an old school fan

CrimsonWing6996d ago

I honestly think the FF7 Remake team should do the next FF game. I was not a fan of 16 and hope to god that isn’t going to be the template for 17 to move forward with.
