PS4's Nov. 15th launch vs Xbox One's Nov. 22nd launch: Who has the advantage?

Gimme Gimme Games debates whether the Xbox One releasing one week earlier than the PS4 in Europe will give it any advantages or whether the PS4 will benefit from releasing a week earlier than Xbox One in America.

The fact is not that the extra week will change day 1 sales, as all launch consoles are locked up by filling pre-orders.

Sony is clearly allocated more consoles for launch, so even if they were a week back, they would be leading.

Where Sony having a week advantage plays key is the fact that they have 2 weeks to restock stores for black friday, not to mention having that cheaper price tag. Microsoft only has 5 days to get stores stocked for black friday shoppers, which is near to impossible to fill. (5 days because Thursday is Thanksgiving, therefore stores would need to receive shipment on Wednesday to have it stocked for BF).

Sony has the advantage in the initial sales outlook for sure.

Not all of the launch sales will be pre-orders for Sony. I cannot speak for MS because I do not have the information but IMO they will have some "shelf" systems available as well. Sony has specifically stated that they will have systems available to those that do not pre-order. This is where the chaos will most likely originate from in the form of long lines and some altercations.

I agree with you on the advantage Sony will have as far as the restock of systems before Black Friday. It will be more difficult for MS to do the same unless they purposely hold back systems for BF. I will assume that Sony will hold back some systems as well, and it is possible that they will have more to sell aside from those that are going to be most likely held back.

IMO, the worst case scenario for MS would be for Sony to sell 1-2 million systems in that 1st week. Though even that will not be that big of a deal.

Game consoles release in 3 week intervals. Neither will have restock available before Black Friday. The only units that will be available are launch units. Most retailers will allocate some for Black Friday, but the goal is to sell through, not store systems. With less pre-orders, Microsoft should have more units available throughout the first 3 weeks.

The only way Sony could have more available is if they were storing them now. That would be extremely unconventional though since warehousing units cuts into the already slim profit margin.

I think that it's a good idea to go first. The reason that Nintendo didn't do better when going first was because they didn't, and still don't, have a very good library of games for the Wii-U. Hopefully that'll change this holiday. But back to Sony and micro$oft, I think they're both going hard after the other guy's turf. In the battling regions (the ones Microsoft and Sony are both releasing) Neither. A week either way is nothing (pre-irders selling out and limited stock in stores anyway. Most consoles sell out at launch because there is enough die hard fans). The regions where one console is releasing way before the other, yes the PS4 does have the advantage there (i.e just those regions).

There is no real advantage to either. It comes down to who can excite buyers the most. There are many ways to accomplish that.

If M$ has one last big unannounced feature left in them, they could hold it for that last week advertising and deny Sony a chance to have it at their launch. But that would have to be a really huge feature to have an effect.

When everyone constantly complains about the gameplay every single day and they try to address those concerns and try to fix the gameplay for the fans over and over again, it's going to be a mess. Crytek has a strange way of "fixing". They said people didnt like to have icons displayed and changed to have glowing outlines around the enemies. So it's QTE just presented different and failing the QTE has little impact.

The game was always going to end up as a mess as it was originally a Kinect game. The dumped the motion controlls but basically retained the same gameplay and adapted it for controllers. Crytek isn't good at game design. I liked Far Cry 1 and Crysis 1, but Crysis 2 and 3 was more like a playable tech demo to show off their engine that had most of the good things removed that made their first two games enjoyable.

Why didn't you excluded Indy's for PS4? Because Sony is announcing more Indies?

Sony has said that their 1st party studios are developing 30 games and 20 of them are coming this PS4's 1st year. What about Xbox One? If you have excluded Indie, Only-Kincet games and games that are on PC(Like Titanfall and Project Spark) they are just 15. Not to mention all we know for those 30 Sony games are Knack, Order:1886, KZ:SF, Infaous:SS and DriveClub that's it for now, as for Xbox One more than half of 15 games are already announced.

Also if you have included games for exclusive, multiplats and indies for PS4 and Xbox One in development, PS4 has 180+ games in development while Xbox One are just 100+.

It was actually Nov 17th 2006 for the PS3. And MS had a clear advantage launching with a year head start and a price point $200 below the top end PS3... machine.

This time however, It Sony. Sure MS launches in 13 markets on day one, but in the US, PS4 statistically is out pacing the Xbox One by 2-1 margins, in NA, that covers Canada, US and parts of Latin America. They've got larger stock allocations already. And will have been on the market 2 weeks prior to black Friday so they'll have time to re-stock.

The Xbox one comes out a week later and at $100 more, sure it'll have a small lead givin it's a week before Europe in launch, The PS4 still launches in 19 markets more than the Xbox one on the 29th. So what ever MS gains will quickly be negated due to the larger stock allocations and also still being €100/£100 cheaper...

Both Consoles will have a very successful launch, make no mistake, they'll both sell out, and both will be pleased, but Sony Will likely be trumpeting figures before MS will and that's due to demand and shear popularity and positive consumer and media buzz of the PS4, OH and the fact that it's cheaper.

Sorry, I think you are missing my point. IF.. Sony and MS both are set to launch in November, and each has production lines running to make the maximum they possibly can deliver in November then its irrelevant as to what day you launch if all of those unit (regardless of amount) are sold out. You can't actually make any more so... lets say for argument sake... MS had a 1 million for launch day and 1 million were pre-ordered. Does it matter if they launch Nov 5 or 22nd? They are launching with as much as they physically can.

I think the more important question to ask is: Is there an advantage to going to production earlier than the competition...and that I would say a resounding YES to. I believe Sony started production in late July / early August... that gave them almost a full month ahead of MS in production time which = more units to ship for their targeted launch day.

A week won't matter much, all I am worried about is the handshake problem with hdcp with tv's and the 1.4 hdmi problem, just had to sell my ps3 because my tele decided it won't input 1080p anymore. Had my LG and ps3 for 6 yrs and all good then all of a sudden it won't display 1080p lol, it's not the age of the tv which is a problem as Samsung 8000/9000 series are having trouble too, Sony sent me a new ps3 and problem persists, type in handshake hdmi ps3 problems in Google and you will see what I mean, Xbox one may have similar problems too as it happens with blu Ray devices, some forums state ps3 super slim took some hdcp encryption stuff out to reduce price. It's really annoying as I had beyond2souls, puppeteer, splittercell, gt6 and gta5 left to play :-(

It won't sway those who were diehard and set in their choices (e.g. MS fanboys were NEVER going to go PS4 regardless of which one released first and vice versa). Those that were going to buy both are still going to buy both...

Where this is going to hit (marginally) are those that weren't sure which one they'd get - having access to one before the other (NA for PS4 and parts of EU for X1), especially to play those multiplat launch titles ASAP, very well may sway those consumers!

Many families and family members would be shelling out for Thanksgiving, not a game console. A lot of money is spent on the preparation of thanksgiving festivities and tons of traveling. A week before is a nice time to buy a product. Then you worry about the Thanksgiving preps after PS4 week, then the week after has black friday.

I see sony dominating . I live outside the US and I already see the greatness awaits commercial on tv whereas not one thing about the Xbox one.I see Microsoft losing internationally again no one who doesn't keep up with gaming news, aka casuals,outside the US even knows the Xbox one exists.

Both consoles will sell out at launch but the PS4 has a big advantage in long run because of the price and availabilty.

Sony launches in more countries that alone is the biggest advantage.
Not to mention Sony has more preorders, bigger positive buzz, cheaper retail price etc.

Come January there are gonna be be a whole lot of number spin articles and excuses as to why the X1 didn't sell as much as the PS4.

Deep down even MS fans know these early days don't look good for MS. This is the direct head to head that the PS3 and Xbox360 should've been. Sony still managed to close that gap and even surpass them.

Now imagine what will happen when they have equal time on the market. Not even talking about the negative stigma around the X1 from the reveal n E3 lets just assume all went well.

MS doesn't want an head to head with Sony evident by the list of launch countries. If it wasn't for Sony no one would care that much that they have delayed launches in so many markets.

MS is gonna swing but right now Sony is in the better place. Lets just hope they don't get over confident and fu(k it up.

The real hard truth is that Sony NEEDS PS4 to be a major success, while MS does not need the same for X1. Even if PS4 sells well, and even after the PS3 turnaround, MS is still standing on more money. This gives MS some breathing room, in terms of trying new approaches and experimentation, while Sony really needs to have their shit together.

Preorders mean jack shit, I've seen so many people walk away or cancel last minute and get a game instead. The real test is how well they actually sell at launch. Further, a week is nothing between launches. Last gen, Xbox 360 had a 12 month advantage which was significant over its competitors. This time, its just immaterial

Honestly it doesn't matter when the PS4 launches in Europe. It's Playstations main market and that's not gonna change. The PS3 was a year behind in Europe and it's sold more than the 360 there. And a week difference won't make a difference in the US, value will.

funny cause you would think that they would want to take more reserves especially X1. But im here in New York City and i went to a few retailers (Gamestop, Bestbuy etc) to reserve both systems and i can't reserve neither which kinda sucks. So worst case scenario ima have to do the long ass lines like a tard.

I think the earlier release might have a slight impact on software. For example, since ima get PS4 a week earlier, i think ima get Killzone or BF4 along with NBA 2k14. PS4 will be my cross platform machine.

X1 seems to be ontrack with more exclusives and early DLC release... So its COD and Forza at release while i wait for Titanfall, Halo 5 and The Division.

That's what im trying to say, there is allot of neutral gamers in limbo like you that will most likely go for the next gen console they can get first. Even though PS4 is beasting the xbox one on preorders the console releasing a week early is another slight notch on Sony's belt. There are more casual neutral gamers then there are hardcore gamers and that's the crowd sony and microsoft are fighting for because they already know there hardcore fans will stick with them. Allot of people who didn't even pickup the PS3 or 360 who is brand new to console gaming will buy these next gen consoles. The week head start means everything to a huge corporate buisness because every last sale will count

I wonder what would people say if GT6 was a launch title for the PS4. It's the exact equivalent of Forza 5 being a XOne launch title, except that Forza has a much higher metacritic score.

they knew the date of the ps4 launch for the last month, if they had any brains they would have launched a week or more early

the really should have launched on Oct. 29th with a special BF4 limited edition
