Xbox exec: ‘We have a more complete value proposition than our competitors’

If you’re a gamer, it’s hard not to be really freakin’ excited for this November when two new consoles — the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One — finally hit store shelves.

But which one will you snag? Trying to save a few bucks with the $399 PS4? Love Halo so much that you’re dedicated to the Xbox? Or will you pass and keep on playing the Wii U while staying true to your Nintendo roots?

A $100 is not a few bucks. There is a reason why the PS4 is selling millions of pre orders. We are in the 4th Qtr of the game here. The consoles come out in 2 months. We seen a lot of flip flops, copy type marketing and Exec quit/fired/replaced over there at MS. They should fix themselves before worrying about Sony. Whom are in full command at this stage of the game.

Btw, I think people who love XBox are not all going to jump ship. More so now that MS has gone back on all their restrictions. We see the X1 pre-orders in games starting to go up (COD). So their ship is not sunk. It was just drifting for a long time.

Thank you for pointing this out. The price difference is much more than $100 since just about every feature of Xbox One requires a Gold subscription. Basically, if you don't get Gold, all you have is a console that will play SP games and BR movies. Meanwhile, the only thing Sony has behind the PS+ paywall is online gaming and free games. You can do just about everything else that MS advertises but without paying a yearly subscription.

I can see some real problems once the casual gaming audience realizes this. They buy an Xbox One because of all these promises of what it can do, then plug it in and find out that it won't do any of those things without paying MS an additional $60 a year. Say the lifespan is 7 years, that's an additional $420 on top of the $100 price difference. Casual gamers and mom/dads who buy this thing for the "all in one entertainment device" are going to be in for quite a bit of sticker shock.

I think so but for the record me and my kids liked using Kinect on 360, it had its problems but it was still enjoyable experience for a change of pace between traditional gaming. I think my excitement comes from anticipation of seeing how they can improve on kinect to add to all types of gaming experiences.

A $100 difference would not sway my decision on a console I will be using for the next 6+ years. However I'm sure there are a lot of people out there who's decision will be made because of that price difference.

If the PS4 was $100 more then the XB1 my decision would still be the PS4 just because the PS3 was able to provide me with a catalog of exclusives that I preferred over what the 360 offered.

Yes for us, early adopters price is of little concern but no doubt for many its the most important factor, but I do think longterm its going to be more of a value proposition because there are many more expensive products that sell better than a cheaper competitor simply because consumers do often gravitate to products they see value in or popularity...of course that value has to be proven, so we'll see.

I hate kinnect. I hate motion gaming in general. The only reason Xbox is more expensive is because of this useless peripheral i already have from 360. Sure they claim its going to be better and it will change the game but they made the same claims for original kinnect and its still a piece of shit. All these gimmicks aren't necessary. I honestly just want a console that allows me to play excellent games. A good 90% of motion games are crap at their core foundations. Why would i want to pay more to play crap games?

When microsoft releases a version without kinnect hopefully before titanfall comes out i will be the first to get that shit. Until then no thanks. Both essentially say "to me price doesn't matter, I want my console of choice".

The difference is that one of them is Pro PS4 and one is Pro XB1.

As of right now, the pro PS4 post has 28 agrees and 0 disagrees, because it was a nice fair non-fanboy statement, and even the Xbox fans approve of what he said.

JokesOnYou, however, with his pro XB1 post, has 7 agrees and 18 disagrees. Which means all the Sony trolls are just hitting disagree because he likes the Xbox.

Now, on the topic of the article, I'm definitely getting both consoles at launch. But at this point I don't see anything on the PS4 that I want to play until inFAMOUS comes out.

I've never cared for Killzone, Knack doesn't appeal to me, etc... All the multiplatform titles I play will be on Xbox, just because I like the controller better, and I like Xbox LIVE better than PSN.

It's going to be a repeat of last gen for me. I'll play games on PS4 that I can't get anywhere else, and that's it. Everything else will be on XB1.

Much like his quote in the article, I believe that Xbox offers a better package. More features, better online service, better games. That's just my opinion of course.

See this is what I don't get about the whole console wars argument. I don't "fear" anything, and no matter what happens, I won't "suffer defeat".

I don't care which console sells more. I'm buying them both. I'll use my Xbox 100 times more, but I couldn't give two craps about sales figures.

Here is how I look at it. Xbox One is in no way going to fail so bad that MS decides to just quit. Even if they are outsold 5 to 1, all that is going to do is have them try harder to make up for it.

Maybe we'll start seeing new features and better deals to get people on their side, or maybe next gen they will release a better console to try harder to make up lost ground.

I just don't see any option where I as a gamer can "suffer defeat" in this scenario. I'm not a stockholder at MS, I don't have a personal stake in this fight.

There are two competing products, I like both of them enough to buy them, end of story. Just because I use one more than the other doesn't mean I would gloat over a victory, or cry over a defeat.

Honestly, if sales numbers weren't plastered all over game sites, I wouldn't know who was "winning", because I would never go looking for them myself.

No real "Gamer" has "suffered defeat" since the days of the Atari 2600.

I use my Bing points to get free monthly cards for Xbox live. I pay nothing and play all MS games online for free because of services MS provides to me. Can you say anything like that about PS+? The controllers I don't need to hold to know which one I will like better because Sony is still putting the left stick in the wrong place. So that's a no brainer for me.

As for the online service, I'm kind of going on two different things, there. One being the fact that XBL blows PSN out of the water right now, so I'm just assuming it will stay in the lead.

The other thing being that all of my friends are XBL players and plan to stay that way, so buying multiplatform games on PS would just be intentionally taking away the option to play with my friends.

You can cry and moan about that $100 all you want, but when that online game you are playing on P2P is lagging out, you wished you had dedicated servers like the Xbox One does.

That is 300,000 servers. MS ranks in the top 3 for number of servers in the world at over a million.

Agreed. The main sticking point now for many people is Kinect. Most people didn't want a camera on 360 or PS3, but now One is more expensive because the camera is included. We'll see how much that impacts sales.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. If you're not a diehard for either company, yes, the PS4 will look attractive because of the price but that will be the only reason (for a casual). It won't be because of the hardware performance (the only real thing the PS4 has going for it. The Xbox One will sell systems to the casual (the majority of consumers) by word of mouth. I know you diehards don't care too much for Kinect, Skype, snapping, and other non hardcore gaming features but when a casual walks into a friend's house and experiences those things, it's game on for MS. I'm excited for those casual features as well as DD where you can switch between games without getting up to change the disc.

You can disagree with me all you want but if you're any way into technology, you have to admit the Xbox One has some cool stuff that it can do. Ok, now here comes the "PS4 can do everything the Xbox One can do". To that I say No, No it can't.

I never said that anyone has wanted or is going to want a camera. All I am saying is that the Xbox One experience is what is going to sell the Xbox One. I know it's hard to believe, especially for hardcore gamers, which this site is the majority of. I'm trying to say that if some casual family member or friend walks into a house and experiences the PS4, they'll mostly experience games and not much else. Not because the PS4 doesn't do other things. It's just not a seamless experience going through all the features. But if they walk into a house with Xbox One, the first thing that will impress is when the owner turns everything on by voice. Then the owner tunes into TV only to snap the internet on the side (all by voice). Then they turn on a video game for a while only to snap the football game on side to see what the score is. Then a Skype call comes in from a friend so they snap to that (all while the video game is still on, probably paused for Skype). Then the owner is done with Skype and decides to play a different game. He doesn't need to get up to change the disc. He switches to a 2 player game like football. He asks his brother to come in and play. The brother walks in and Kinect recognizes him and signs him in before he grabs a controller.

Think the casual guest is impressed yet? If you say no and hit disagree, you're either not into cool tech or are so against MS that you won't admit it's cool no matter what.

I can care less if nobody else wants this experience. I know I do and that's all that matters.

To everyone thinking kinect is an unneeded gimmick you should see what guys at project spark did with it. You can mo-cap characters there using kinect. Record your own full body animations, facial expressions and voice (and then change the voice for exmaple on troll voice), put it into the game and share it. Now that is awesome. If you had you would have known that the launching a game without putting a disc in was fully demonstrated on stage.. it was flawless, seamless, and loaded in seconds... Secondly Sony confirmed facial recognition/profile sign in and voice controls with the PS Eye.. There is literally almost nothing ONE can do that PS4 cannot..

$100 isn't going to make a difference to the diehard fan. To the moderate gamer that just wants to play games, it might, but they will likely go where their friends go, and it's safe to assume that most people would prefer to pay less if they can. This is particularly true for popular multi-plat players.

I also don't believe the gold sub is going to make a difference, at least not for anyone that currently owns a 360.

And no, people don't buy these devices to watch Netflix or DVR their games, but if they are interested in those features, then having them behind a pay wall that some may not want to pay can deter them from purchasing it when the competition offers the same thing without the pay wall.

This article is about "value proposition", and it's pretty easy to see that the less expensive console, that does not have a recurring fee to get at all of the systems value, is a better value proposition for those interested in those things.

As a all-in-one device, the Xbox falls short for the sole reason of everything is behind a pay wall. The all-in-one mantra is there to mostly attract the casual to moderate gamer who wants convenience. However, when that convenience is more expensive, many people will take the cheaper option, particularly if they are comparable.

Also, dunno where you've been these past few years, but the whole "MS puts all it's features behind a paywall" argument has been going on here for quite some time. It's really the same argument as used before, it's just modified now to include Sony, saying that Sony has value behind it's subscription, whereas MS value is less due to those features being free everywhere else...including sub $100 blu-ray players.

The reason people dont complain about Sony subscription is its a better value 100%. You're not simply paying for the privlidge of multiplayer you also get a kicking catalog of FREE GAMES!!!. MiicoSoft tries to fool you that is worth it with Facebook,Netflix,Party Chat, but in the end your paying to play your games online. So no I'm not mad because the value is there. Ohh and BTW all that other stuff is still usuable on PS4 even if your not a Plus member. So I choose to support a company that is pro games not pro lemme steal your monies.

There is that fighter within game and then there's the added kinect features but yea its not really showing anything. I'm hopeing that they oppen up the flood gates to modders with the kinect so they can add in features.

Fighter Within, Just dance and Zumba fitness are available at launch (I personally have no desire for the last two)and secondary features in other games will be available at launch (this the part of the Kinect that is more impressive to me, not dedicated games, but more extra things you can do with it). D4, Rivals, and Project Spark will all heavily rely on Kinect and will be in the launch window. So saying that it has no use is actually wrong. You may not care for it, but it's still there.

Played both and Ryse looks gorgeous and plays just great as does KZ. But neither came out above the other. At least Ryse isn't the standard FPS gameplay. I literally could not tell that I was playing KZ3 when compared to KZ2.

They did not have Second Son playable but sat in on a theater presentation and the game looks HOT. Minus the emo lead character who is just annoying. I'm hoping you can replace him with the original Cole but probably not.

Obviously the whole "who has what" in terms of value is completely subjective. If you like the Xbox brand, than yes, you will find that Xbox One has more "complete value".. vice versa if you prefer PlayStation. But in regards to the people who aren't leaning on either side and are just looking to buy a new gaming console.. it comes right down to the shelve price.

You can boast about specs, or what accessory comes bundled with the system all you want.. but at the end of the day it doesn't mean a whole lot to the mass casual market who is most likely buying the system to play mainstream third party games.

Now as for them "doing things not found on other platforms".. I don't see a huge gap of differences between these systems. They both PLAY GAMEES.. they both have accessories and they both do multimedia. So in the end I just don't see where Xbox One does something better than PS4 by a mile wide gap.

almost forgot what this is about by the time I got to the bottom... of course X1 is worth more. PS4 will have great games by 2015 but is basically PS3 with better graphics while X1 will have evolved gaming even further than the standard that 360 set with Kinect 2 and Cloud. Funniest thing is sony fans keep bringing up KZSF... um the first 3 games on PS3 would be considered B shooters on 360 so don't get your hopes too high. On the flip side MS better go through with their plan to focus on 1st party because when the dust settled the 360 had very few true exclusives. In a way its very true..i dont see a big difference in the hardware specs and besides kinect 2 and xbox live are totally worth it.most of my pals on live are going to be switching over too.....i do respect sony for what they have done and im def getting a ps4 later down the line but anyone who says the xbox one isnt offering a more robust set of services may not be looking at the whole picture...its a matter of opinion though..

You are right this is what is going to sell the X-one. It seems that all that sonny fan boys and girls want is a more powerful ps2/ps3, but do not like technology. The X-one I believe will actually end being more powerful and the exclusives looking better in the end like the ps3 was last gen.

If they give at least 2 years' free Xbox Live with every purchase then they might have a selling point.

Otherwise I know what the score is - I'm paying for the privilege of certain exclusives on the console for the first few years of the generation. But that's not compelling sounding enough to make the XboxOne seem like the great buy that the PS3 eventually became.

I'm having a hard time believeing it's a better value. Owning both a 360 and PS3 I get more value from PSPlus than XBLGold. Just my opinion from my experience. I have a XB1 pre-ordered but the closer we get and the fact I really only want Dead Rising 3 right now, makes me second guess it and canceling the pre-order. I'll leave it till last minute but not seeing paying for XBLGold for one game when I'm getting Watchdogs, AC4, Killzone, Driveclub pn PS4. I have more pre-ordered but losing track. Titanfall, COD and BF4 on PC so XB1 wouldn't get played too much. Decisions Decisions

Lol Sony's already been down this road. The only difference is Blu-ray was worth it, Kinect isn't. Blu-ray changed 3 or 4 industries, and people wanted it. Kinect will be dis(kinected) the second people can do it....

The Xbox could pre priced at 100 dollars and I still wouldn't buy One. The PS4 could cost 600 and I would definitely still buy it. You never know what you are going to get with M$, and you don't how long your console is going to work or get support. Plus with all the cheap parts M$ uses, the actual price to have it running like it should to match the PlayStation console will actually make the One much more expensive. Last gen the 360 was actually more expensive because of Live + battery packs + M$ points + replacement headsets + HD DVD + hard drive upgrade. All that with the console, or multiple consoles if you were stupid enough to buy more after RROD, added up to more than 600 for a PS3 which had everything already except for the headset.

Better value? Not sure about that.
Even though I will be getting both, just from a single platform only perspective - no way it has better value

Exclusives - We all know Sony/PS4 will dominate in this area as the generation goes by

Multi-platforms - All the multi-platform games on XBONE can already be played on PS4

Indie Games - Some people look at this and go BLAH! - There are a lot of great Indie games (some better then some AAA titles). It's probably the main reason PC is still somewhat relevant and people need to experience how awesome some of these Indie games are.

PS4 with better Indie support then XBONE.

Sorry but I fail to see the XBONE having better value and I haven't even brought up the fact that the XBONE is more EXPENSIVE then the PS4.
