The Upgrade or Wait Dilemma of Next-Gen Gaming

If we can learn anything from the phenomenal crowds at the Eurogamer Expo each year, it would seem that gamers will travel far and wide to get their hands on a game before anyone else. Even if it means a three hour journey and a one hour queue to play the latest must-have AAA title, then so be it.

With this is mind, I cannot help but think that the UK release date of the PS4 on November 29th is a slight misstep by Sony. Nearly every AAA release such as Watch Dogs, Call of Duty: Ghosts, FIFA 4, Assassin’s Creed 4 and Battlefield 4 can be enjoyed on your current console. As customers, we pre-order and purchase our favourite games as soon as they are released, so if the average gamer has their hands on the year’s big releases and the behemoth that is known as GTA V comes online in October, what incentive is there for you to upgrade to next-gen gaming?

The majority of gamers that I have had the pleasure of conversing with have echoed the same sentiments and when asked the question about PS4 or Xbox One, their replies seem to consist of “I’m going to wait; there’s no point in upgrading yet.”

I understand the caution some people have when new consoles release but i just can't see myself being able to wait for a PS4, impatient i know but ive wanted new consoles for a few years now. I'm ready for next gen.

black0o3886d ago

We waited 7 years .. cant wait any longer

negative3886d ago

I'm excited for two new consoles but am not sure what to do. I still love my PS3 and 360 - and have a ton of games to get to!!!

Cancel or keep preorders??? UGH!

KwietStorm_BLM3886d ago (Edited 3886d ago )

Exactly. This particular calendar year has an outstanding lineup, but thus argument is silly, as you could say it any time you want, and you could justify it with enough evidence. Like you said, we've waited long enough, and good current gen games aside, we have to move on at some point. It's not like you're obligated to opt in at release, but I know I am.

i wouldnt really say this is upgrading. That implies you are trading up with the intent to not go back down.

That would be something reserved for cell phones and the sort where you generally need just the one.

console gaming (and gaming in general) is more about coexistence. Meaning that even when you buy the newer you dont generally give up on the former as an automatic response.

there is plenty of room for the addition of new systems to coexist with those of past gens. i welcome the addition of a Ps4 to go along with my ps3, ps2 and ps1. same with the xb1 to compliment my 360 and xbox library.

Bring on next gen and the next one after that and the next one after that. Its all good.

Bleucrunch3886d ago

I am ready for next gen as well...I mean i can understand waiting if you don't have the cash yet. But that argument is shut down by me stating that you knew a new console was coming out and you could have scrapped and saved for it. No excuses gamers...Next Gen here we come. Oh the previous gen consoles are still good so their is no need to get rid of them just yet.

ABeastNamedTariq3886d ago

I can't wait anymore, darn it!

Also, if that current gen version of Watch Dogs doesn't scream UPGRADE I don't what does haha. I mean, it's not THAT bad, but it's still... A little yucky (to me).

Williamson3886d ago

I'll upgrade and at the same time stick with my ps3, I can't abandon my ps3 when great exclusive/multiplatform games are still coming. Also I've grown attached to my ps3 from all the great times I've had with it in the last 7 years.

Nekroo913886d ago

the only reason to not buying a console at launch is hardware failures but since the ps4 is colder than the ps3 and the bluray as quite some time i dont see anything that could break the console .

As for the X1 i have to wait to see

aLucidMind3886d ago

I know some, including myself, are holding off to see whether developers will do what they did this gen: make the games on the xbox and port to ps3. While im more a 360 gamer, I worry about constantly getting significantly inferior versions due to a game being no more than a port. Dont wanna get the short end of the stick if I decided to only get one of the two.

Nekroo913886d ago

i think its time for you to change since youre getting inferior games,360 version of dragon age will be the worst of all platforms, titanfall version on the 360 is being made by another team etc

More interested in money than giving fans what they want. Such a shame

CrimsonWing691d 21h ago

With the amount of money they generated, I just don’t understand the scrubbing of this. It would’ve been fantastic for fans.

Profchaos1d 20h ago

I really want to know who drove the decision to focus on multiplayer was it Rockstar or take two.

Because when online started taking off many of the studio leads began having falling outs and leading including a founder

Ikr mfs that greedy it's ridiculous

andy851d 18h ago

This makes me sad. Trevor was one of my favourite characters in gaming

One of the reason I believe once gta 6 release, most of us thoroughly play it, enjoy the world they crafted then after that no offline support, no dlc at all
