Sony Offers Cryptic Statement on PS4 Voice Commands

Sony last night addressed whether the PS4 features voice command capabilities through the PlayStation camera, but the company's statement may not reveal as much as it initially seems.

Majin-vegeta3882d ago

Mehh i could care less but if it does do it.Good for it.I just prefer to turn my console on with my remote.

buynit3882d ago

Well how much less can you care? I would like the option of both, im not scared of moving forward..

scott1823882d ago

The thing has voice recognition, meaning they can add any number of features they want using voice. If there is not a feature for voice navigation at the moment like Kotaku is suggesting there may not be, they could add it at any time using firmware. I would be surprised if there weren't any voice navigation features currently though.

abzdine3882d ago (Edited 3882d ago )

great video! the crowd sounds excited for some greatness.

ShinMaster3882d ago

Moving forward...?

Anyway. The technology is there. Sony can apply it if they want to and if the demand is high enough.

Voice commands have been around for a while now and has more to do with the software than the hardware. So the camera is more than capable.

malokevi3882d ago

Voice recognition? Yeah. IR blaster... I doubt it.

The best thing about Xbox's voice recognition is that you can tune it so that when you say "Xbox, On", it turns on your TV, your receiver, your Xbox, and anything else that you want. Basically, it activates your whole media setup, which is amazing.

Voice commands are nifty, but as far as functionality I think Kinect takes the cake. Not to mention that it's fully supported, designed from the ground up, and comes standard with every console.

I definitely won't be getting a camera for my PS4.

NewMonday3882d ago

Kotaku on the weed again

what is the point of "voice recognition" without voice commands?

it is like saying a console has online but not MP.

scott1823882d ago

Sony fully supports the playstation eye obviously, but it's not forced on the user, it is an option if they want that experience. We didn't even know that it had voice recognition until just recently, how can anyone say it doesn't offer as much functionality? Sure there may be a few bells and whistles the Kinect has and the eye does not, but as far as being good usable tech for any number of things it appears great. Plus it is functionally very practical for gaming with the move controller, and extremely fun. One of my favorite games of last gen was move sports 2, just because the move controller worked so amazingly well for sports games. I will definitely be getting the new improved camera with the system.

wsoutlaw873882d ago

@malokevi. Turning on my ps3 already does that. My tv kicks on and switches to ps3 input.

ShwankyShpanky3881d ago

Poor Malokevi has never heard of HDMI-CEC, which is already supported by the PS3.

But IR control is way more advanced than HDMI-CEC, right?

As an owner of a Harmony remote, it can be obnoxious when one of the components goes "out of sync" with the rest of the system, like if someone walks in front of the entertainment center while everything's turning on and blocks the signal to one component. And of course you'll need to be sure that your setup allows your AV receiver to effectively receive IR signals being emitted outward from above or below the TV. Won't work so hot for anyone that keeps their AV equipment in a closed cabinet or closet.

@newmonday: My thoughts exactly.

andrewsqual3881d ago

Then go back to 2002 and use it on Windows XP. What's that? That's crazy? Exactly.

NateCole3881d ago

Wasting breath and voice to turn on the console is moving forward?.

sincitysir13881d ago (Edited 3881d ago )

My goodness the comparisons between kinect and the eye are ridiculous. They do similar shit the only difference is that kinect does it "better." U all seem to forget the eye is still extremely capable being HALF THE PRICE OF THE KINECT!!! S I X T Y D O L L A R S vs O N E H U N D R E D & F I F T Y D O L L A R S

YodaCracker3881d ago

@sincitysir1

Exactly! Which is why it is beyond me why anyone would expect the PSEye to come anywhere close to the features and performance of Kinect 2.

sonarus3881d ago

@buynit
Scared of moving forward. You are only fooling yourself if you believe saying "XBOX ON" is moving forward compared to just pushing your button.

Oh ps ms force kinnect on us so it can make all games better. Motion control is obviously the only path to moving forward

Axe993881d ago

Moving forward? We've had voice commands in games since the early 2000s - voice control isn't 'moving forward' as much as refining something we already had. I agree it's a nice add-on, but as someone who runs a 'silent' system (gaming with headphones so as not to disturb those around me) voice commands aren't the add-on I'm looking for.

thisismyaccount3881d ago

If talking to a electronic device is going forward in "times"... i´d rather stay where i am right now.

Seriously... someone at Sony thought... SHEET! M$ is doing what we are doing right now, first they remove the DRM, then the 24 IP check, used games policy.. then the one for Indie devs.. and apparently there is no need for KINECT!

They keep telling you, there won´t be a kinectless (btw. they got this Name from a PS2 Eye Toy game : Kinetic)... and more hot air, now there are idiots spreading rumours that the bone has 2x gpu, total powa for 10 Teraflops...

At Sony. stop it! WE don´t need anything M$ has.. seriously. noone gives a fuck about the Eye Toy, it was fun back with the PS2.. THE END!

Ritsujun3881d ago

LOL@BN's "not scared of moving forward". Try harder, brat.

SilentNegotiator3881d ago

"Hello? Is anybody out there?"

That's probably what the Ps4 camera is going to be saying when playstation gamers vote with their wallets against buying a camera.

RyuCloudStrife3881d ago (Edited 3881d ago )

Nobody cares about saying ON to a console. If they want me to buy the camera its simple... make a good game that utilizes it.

PERIOD!

killcycle3881d ago (Edited 3881d ago )

If the command for turning your PS4 on is "Ps4 ON"

Then what happens if say i'm having a conversation with a friend in my living room where the ps4 would be and i say something like
"today i went to turn the PS4 ON to charge the controller"
will it accidentally turn on every time because that would piss me off!

Ryto3881d ago (Edited 3881d ago )

I can't think of anything worse than shouting at my console to do things for me, one of the reasons I have never cared for kinect. Genuinely do not have, and will never have any interest in features like this.

But. If its there, I'm sure some people with enjoy screaming at inanimate objects, so lets do it sony!

Truth, I don't care about voice control. Its good to have the option.

mark134uk3882d ago

i dont want voice control - i have kids :)

scott1823882d ago

That's what I am hoping for....

gta28003881d ago

That bundle would be fuckin sweet for that price. Im wondering if I should wait and see if this bundle gets announced for the U.S.

Insomnia_843882d ago (Edited 3882d ago )

In this issue of PLAYSTATION: The Official Magazine, in an interview with the person who made the PSEYE, he said: " in a near future you could turn on/off the PS3 just by saying "PS3 ON". This was 2007, they just never decided to do it but it could. Microsoft now is trying to make this look like their own invention and innovation same with the "no controller needed" crap with kinect, everything Kinect related is a copy from the PSEYE, what kinect does, the PSEYE can do too, but we already know MS, they hype a fart and try to convince you their fart is special like none other and makes a CLOUD with INCREDIBLE POWER that somehow will make your life better.

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/w...

Tuviejacalata3882d ago

Lol. They could, they should... They still didn't do crap... They could have done online in the ps2 too.. . Didn't push for anything...
Good, that now, they want to follow xbox initiatives so that little fanboys like you can also enjoy the experience.

AngelicIceDiamond3881d ago (Edited 3881d ago )

@Insomnia So far MS is ahead of Sony when it comes to "motion control" just look at Kinect I and how much it sold.

"Microsoft now is trying to make this look like their own invention and innovation same with the "no controller needed" crap with kinect, everything Kinect related is a copy from the PSEYE,"

Wow, all MS is doing is expanding on an idea that was brought in by Nintendo a long time ago http://en.wikipedia.org/wik... 1989 to be exact.

Sony wasn't the grand creator of motion tech in games. Sony and MS are expanding on old idea's MS just got it right as well as Sony with Move.

"makes a CLOUD with INCREDIBLE POWER that somehow will make your life better."

I got no comment for that. Just your typical everyday run of the mill fanboy statement there.

AngelicIceDiamond3881d ago

Disagree with no argument? I guess I win this debate. I win you lose

And I'll keep winning.

DragonKnight3881d ago

@AgelicIceDiamond: "just look at Kinect I and how much it sold."

Due to bundles, not on its own.

Hicken3881d ago

@Angelic: Kinect sold because, for a while at least, you couldn't even find a 360 without one. That aside, sales doesn't equate to the best offering. The Move is far more precise than the Wii, even with Motion+, but it hasn't sold anywhere near as much as the Wii. Battlefield and Killzone both display better tech than Call of Duty, but... well, need I say more there?

Sony didn't create it, but the EyeToy was a more serious effort than the Power Glove. Less ambitious, more focused, and better support. And the Kinect is nothing like the Power Glove, and EVERYTHING like the EyeToy. If anything, the Wii and Move are more in line with the Power Glove, due simply to their concepts: physical controls along with motion controls(Power Glove= Wii, Move), versus full motion controls(EyeToy=Kinect). I know you don't want to admit it, but in this respect, MS copied Sony.

As for the cloud, admit it: Microsoft touted it as a wonderdrug, of sorts, for the XB1. Yet as time goes on, we find it's doing nothing particularly new in gaming. And that's whenever they decide to divulge some info about the cloud. Somehow, despite all the evidence to the contrary, you fanboys STILL think the cloud will boost the XB1's power; you STILL think that Azure- which is designed for businesses and is already being used for that purpose- will be for the exclusive use of the XB1. You keep running with the "300,000 servers" line, oblivious to the fact that no one's been told whether they're all physical, or virtual, and that there IS a difference between them.

The FANBOY thing is to blindly believe what ANY company says without solid evidence to back their words up.

Which is what you do.

Sony folks... well, there's plenty of evidence to back up any claim Sony makes.

So who's a fanboy?

AngelicIceDiamond3881d ago (Edited 3881d ago )

@Dragon Your partially right.

But

http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

"24 million units of the Kinect sensor had been shipped by February 2013.[1] Having sold 8 million units in its first 60 days on the market, Kinect has claimed the Guinness World Record of being the "fastest selling consumer electronics device".[18][19][20][141] According to Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter, Kinect bundles accounted for about half of all Xbox 360 console sales in December 2010 and for more than two-thirds in February 2011.[142][143] More than 750,000 Kinect units were sold during the week of Black Friday 2011."

Kinect sold 8 million on its own.

You are correct allot of People bought the bundled Xbox with Kinect. Its funny to see you down play one thing, but mistakenly uplift another. It looks like there is a audience who will buy X1 and have no problem with Kinect. Since allot of those 360 sales were from Kinect bundled.

Sounds like a win win to me. And its obvious MS looked into the bundled sales.

Now.

More than 750,000 Kinect units were sold during the week of Black Friday 2011."

And that was by itself.

Anything else? Because I still won.

EDIT: @Hicken "Sony didn't create it, but the EyeToy was a more serious effort than the Power Glove. Less ambitious, more focused, and better support. And the Kinect is nothing like the Power Glove, and EVERYTHING like the EyeToy."

It doesn't matter how serious and more ambitious it was. The fact of the matter is Nintendo created motion gaming all together. I'm not comparing Kinect to Power Glove or anything like that. All I'm saying is Nintendo created "motion gaming don't spin the facts.

"MS, they hype a fart and try to convince you their fart is special like none other and makes a CLOUD with INCREDIBLE POWER that somehow will make your life better."

So you don't find this comment immature, trolling and fanboyatic?

Ok, I feel sorry for you then.

Dedicated servers so far is a proven. COD, Titanfall, Drivetar Forza. MS talked about cloud support for Crackdown.

http://news.softpedia.com/n...

Do the math. Am I saying its real and will happen? I certainly hope its real but it remains to be seen.

Making worlds persistent worlds, biggger worlds and better AI is yet to be seen. There is such as thing as hyping up something that falls flat and that happens in every sequel of a game, or a new console release whatever. Its a wait and see approach.

According to you Im a fanboy because I'm excited for something that COULD make games better and excited about it? If this cloud stuff was available on all plats you wouldn't be complaining.

You can't down play something that's right in front of you. And is happening in some compacity.

Its funny to see you generalize me like that. 300,000 servers super powers XBOX blah, blah yeah nice try.

trafalger3881d ago (Edited 3881d ago )

dragonknight,

"Due to bundles, not on its own."

and not all x360's had kinect only bundles. in fact sony also had the move bundled on there system as well.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Son...

of course the big difference is kinect bundles sold better. if move bundles sold well we would still be seeing them. you aslo have to realize that if move sold really well they would be pushing it too. 3d was also met with lukewarm response on the ps3, which is why sony now rarely talks about it. they even sold tv bundles with 3d tv's (and a ps3 exclusive) that could display a different image to each gamer instead of split-screen. that soon had a major fire sale because again nobody bought it.

m$ aggressive marketing made kinect a success. now they will have to try and sell a $500 system with kinect on the xbone. having kinect in every xbone also distinguishes it from the ps4 which to me is a good thing. why have two systems that are almost identical? at least now fanboys have something legit to argue about.

YNWA963881d ago

We're all fanboys.... We're all trolls.... Hell, I am learning to argue using links only.... Like some people.... Maria... Then I top it off by saying 'do not blame me, just stating facts' with my links.... Hey, I used to own an xbox/ps... I'm cool.... I give up on this site.... Thanks to inconsistent mods, all discussions are one sided because half have 6 plus bubbles, other half have 3 or less....

Death3881d ago

I thought all of the 360 sales were the $199 core bundles which is why it sold as well as it did. There is no way Microsoft could sell anywhere near as well as Sony does at the same price point. Now it turns out Microsoft made those sales on Kinect bundles that cost more?

Cloud computing...It's incredible how people assume cloud is being sold to gamers as a GPU in the sky. Let's get it straight, Microsoft's Azure is a shit ton of servers that can be used for various things. One of them is additional storage for Xbox users, or they can be used by devs. Turn10 explained their use already for Forza. It sounds pretty cool so far. Instead of racing against AI that isn't always good, our driving style will be recorded and uploaded to Azure. From their it can be downloaded to our friends so they can race against "us" instead of AI. This frees up processing power that the AI would normally use. That power can be used as developers need. Turn 10 will also be able to use our preferances that are stored on Azure to decide what way they should tweak the game to make it better. http://www.gameranx.com/upd...

Walking into a room and saying "Xbox turn on" and having the system turn on and load my profile based on sound or images isn't cool? Seriously, grabbing the remote and powering the system on manually is better? Good news, you can still do it that way on the One if you prefer. Microsoft gives the choice. Being able to use the system without the controller is a step forward, not behind. It's amazing that all the people that couldn't find the energy to swap discs on the PS3 suddenly have all the energy in the world to not only start the system manually, but fought hard against Microsoft's proposed ability to rip all games to the HDD and not rely on discs at all.

Imo, I don't think the PS Eye is a safe bet at the moment. I will wait for further details however.

LordDhampire3881d ago

honestly why do you need to turn it on with voice, its so gimmicky, the center controller button is faster, and more responsive.

sincitysir13881d ago

Relax champ. Lets hope kinect can understand your stuttering

3-4-53881d ago

Pushing a button is just as fast, and more efficient and more reliable.

Spending millions for a nano-second increase in Powering up time is the dumbest waste of money ever.

You think the "smart" people at these companies would figure it out. I'm pretty sure Nintendo understands it very well, and I think Sony does too.

What does powering up your machine via voice ACTUALLY DO ?

Nothing!

Once you've powered it up, you play the game right? Are you voice commanding the game? No

So then why the need to power up using voice ?

It literally almost serves no purpose currently.

Heartnet3881d ago

If console powering up takes 30 seconds and controller is somewhere in room but findable in 30 seconds..

You can run in and yell Ps On or whatever and find controller as its powering up...

Saves time and its just cooler... Physical things are terrible...

3-4-53881d ago

uhh are you serious ?

Physical things are terrible ?

Your XB1/PS4 ( once you get it) is terrible ?

Your body is terrible ?

This planet is terrible ?

You must be trolling.

DigitalRaptor3881d ago (Edited 3881d ago )

"Physical things are terrible"

*chortles*

You're buying a physical console, your Kinect/Eye is a physical camera.

The house you live in is physical. The majority of the things you use on a daily basis are physical. Your phone is physical.

Your family, friends, girlfriend/boyfriend are also physical.

The air you breathe is physical. The ground you walk on is physical. The sun that keeps our solar system in orbit and our planet healthy is physical.

Fail.

Heartnet3881d ago

Not "Could Care Less".. Could care less means nothing!

kewlkat0073881d ago (Edited 3881d ago )

Sony Coy as ever...knowing the eye toy or voice commands is either sh!tty or got nothing on the kinect abilities. Microsoft is at least standing behind the kinect making sure it is part of the console so it gets support..

Add to the fact that, not many people will buy the damn thing..Sony just stop bullsh!ting. The support the Eye toy could of gotten is DOA.

I feel they are grasping at straws here. Voice recognition is crap if it doesn't do anything. Voice navigator is the first thing people do with voice recognition (looking at my android phone right now).

DeadManIV3882d ago

I think people misunderstand what you are trying to say, your comment on Kotaku makes more sense.

user74029313882d ago

voice recognition on ps4 will be good but i couldn't care less about the feature. i just want the games.

Hellsvacancy3882d ago (Edited 3882d ago )

I doubt i'll even bother with getting the camera, never say never of course, i've recently been "given" a PS3 camera with EyePet (for my daughter)

She didn't really like it, nor did I, too much of a pain in the ass to set it up, it just sits in the cupboard

user74029313882d ago

just old fashioned dirty badass games ftw

mac_sparrow3882d ago

Not going to disagree if that's your experience, but out of interest, what was a pain to set up?

I have eyepet and also wonderbook and all I ever do is plonk the camera in front of the tv and put the disc in.

Hellsvacancy3882d ago (Edited 3882d ago )

With the EyePet you have to adjust the camera and the mat you place on the floor/table, my daughter is only 5, so whenever she loads it up it just blinks red, she'll wake me moaning the camera won't detect the mat "it doesn't work daddy" i get at 6am

The EyePet is the ONLY game i've played with the PSEye so i'm not saying it's flawed, I packed it away, It also didn't detect my hand movements very well, I'll be wiggling my fingers in the air trying to get this dog/cat to jump and it would'nt do it as easy as it should

Scatpants3882d ago

Ill probably by the camera in a month where not much is coming out, like summertime.

Tony-A3882d ago (Edited 3882d ago )

Same. I enjoyed video chatting with my PS Eye on PS3 but it was a product I bought at my own discretion after my PSN friends suggested I get one. I'm relieved that its optional because, if I buy it, the only thing I care about is if it works properly, not by how much it can do.

I've had voice recognition for many years now, most recently in my smartphones but I find it useless. Don't care how technically complex it is or how quickly it works... like motion control, it's just another - more cumbersome way of navigating through software.

Cool, but no thanks. Maybe later.

user74029313882d ago

yeah, and they dont have killer apps for it.

pompombrum3882d ago (Edited 3882d ago )

Lol so many stealth disagrees.. ironic seeing as they are implying using your voice is a good thing.

Lets be honest though, voice commands aren't really all that practical unless you can somehow get it to recognize a certain. I can see in many households it being disabled simply because a brother or friend is going to turn off the console to annoy whoever is on it.

buynit3882d ago (Edited 3882d ago )

Are you implying that it isnt a good thing?

I guess im lucky enough... Let someone do that shit in my house while im playing... I guarantee you they wont do it again, and what a lame excuse on why to hate it anyway..

pompombrum3882d ago

I'm not hating on it at all. It's not an excuse, it's just the practical limitations of it.

buynit3882d ago

Bro, everything has a limit..

And if someone wanted to be a d!ck that bad they can just walk over and touch the button..

If you ask me its sony that is limiting the tech a long with its die hard fan base.. I mean seriously if you have a decent set up in your living room how can the ui voice and face recognition not excite you, yet a touch pad is going to revolutionise gameing amiright...

I love the idea of both controller and motion control, not so much all motion games not from what i have seen so far anyway. It just boggles my mind on the kind of hate kinect gets. Just look at you you say it has limits yet its adding another layer of emmersion to gaming yet you want games limited to just buttons, the irony! Lol

iamnsuperman3882d ago (Edited 3882d ago )

"If you ask me its sony that is limiting the tech a long with its die hard fan base.. I mean seriously if you have a decent set up in your living room how can the ui voice and face recognition not excite you, yet a touch pad is going to revolutionise gameing amiright... "

You are also paying for that luxury. Look UI voice, touch pad, face recognition is all cool but these things only become viable if the cost isn't great on the consumer. It is "cool" to control a TV with my voice but I hardly see it an advancement when I am paying a lot more than, lets say, using a remote control which is simple and a very cheap device. For things to "advance" they need to be an inexpensive way to do things and/or fundamentally make things easier. Voice commands (at the current time) does not do any of that

ShwankyShpanky3881d ago

Why exactly am I supposed to be "excited" about facial recognition? Ooh! It can log me into my account automatically! Saving me three button presses and four seconds! (and then farming me for marketing data... awesome!)

And as an aside, I don't know about "revolutionizing" gaming, but people are underestimating the touchpad. It essentially adds like a dozen buttons/sliders to the controller.

Petro3881d ago (Edited 3881d ago )

This is a serious question, does anyone actually use Siri anymore? Just like any voice recognition, its cool for few hours or possibly even few days until you realize that its just slower trying to talk to your device than pushing a button. If you even have to repeat your question or command once, it will lose all of its usability. I have very recent experience on this while I was trying to find the best voice recognition software for PC that I could use to make macros for games, there is no such thing as working voice recognition.
