The Last Of Us Alt Ending Details Revealed

The post-apocalypse of Naughty Dog's survival-action game The Last of Us is a bleak and hopeless one. But one of the game's scrapped alternate endings, which took a turn for the improvised and musical, provided a swelling, romantic sense of hope (and plenty of laughter).

Still ass hurt over a 7.5/10? They give a game a score that doesn't meet the quality of the die hard hivemind and their creditably is forever in question. Get over yourself. A 7.5 isn't even bad, it's above average. Just because someone likes something doesn't mean someone else will. What's good for the goose isn't always good for the gander as they say.

Played and beaten it(PSN ID: ToUniek). I personally thought it was overrated but not a bad game, nor did the review reflect that. Someone shared a different experience, and reviewed a game based around their own opinion. If every review site gave the same reception to appease the hivemind from getting their panties in a bunch over an opinion it would make all these review sources redundant. It's as justified as any other opinion. Again, get over yourself.

Well, basically what I didn't like is that Joel basically acted for himself, not caring about the rest of the world. He just wants to stay with Ellie, probably because she reminds him of his daughter. In the last cutscene we are also brought to think that even Ellie would have wanted to sacrifice herself for that cause, but Joel gives her no choice, lying to her.

In addition to that, if you remember what Tess said to him before getting killed by the guards, she thought of this "mission" as a chance for her and Joel to be redeemed for all the bad things they had done. He screwed this up too and, we can say, Tess died just to save the two of them, while she was hoping to help saving the world.

These are the reasons that come to my mind right now, maybe I'll have more as I think about it better.

Oh yes, another thing: before getting to the hospital, if you talk to Ellie she gives you a picture of Sarah and Joel comments "One thing I learned, you cannot run from the past", now how does it harmonize with the final cutscene, when he lies to Ellie, the only person he lives for. How long does he think he'll run from that past?
She'll notice that people keep getting infected, that no one talks about a cure... I mean, it's clearly a dead end.

I agree with everything you said, but to me it sounds like you are giving me reasons why Joel fails a human being, not reasons why the game sucks.

If you cheer for Joel, you want him to get the job done and go through with the mission no matter the cost. But the truth is, he cant. Thats the beauty of the ending, it doesnt reward you with a standard "congrats, you saved the world" stupid BS ending. It just show you the dilemna and the limitation of a human being living in a world that went to shit. It shows the ambiguity of right and wrong.

It might feel like a slap to the face, but thats a slap that might be there for a reason. In the end we feel hopeless, just like Joel feels hopeless. In the end, I felt like the ending resonated with my own experience with the game.

Honestly, I didn't like it. To me, a game is about you calling the shots. It's about player agency.

In TLOU, I was mentally prepared to the painful, yet noble sacrifice of letting Ellie die for the sake of humanity. She herself was prepared to die. However, Joel's selfishness was shoved down my throat. The player had to guide him through taking away humanity's last hope, whether the player liked it or not. I tried letting the fireflies kill me for a RDR-like ending, but I was just respawned again and again, looking for a give up button and yelling at the screen "Why am I doing this?"
If you'd emphasized with Joel, more power to you. But what about the people who were ready to do the right thing, the people who choose to sacrifice themselves in Infamous 2 instead of condemning humanity? They would feel betrayed.
The problem was that you had no say in the matter at the end. The game made the final decision for you in what's supposed to be an interactive medium. I felt disconnected and betrayed by Joel

I hear you man, I felt the same way. I was like "WTF? Lets do this! How could we be back pedaling after all we've been through?"

I was ready to reach the goal. Sacrifice Ellie. Not being able to do so left a bitter taste in my mouth.

I hated how the game made the choice for me. The choice of saving Ellie. The choice of trying to find a cure, no matter how little are the chances.

But then... I realized something. This not my story. This is Joel's story. And if Joel cant let go Ellie, then I cant let go Ellie. Therefore, as Joel, as a player, there is no choice for me to make.

See, Joel has already lost his daughter. It came to the point that he denied he ever had a daughter. It took him years to "accept" the loss of his child. Now he finds himself in a new father/daughter dynamic with Ellie. He cant go throught losing a child again, even though Ellie is not his daughter by blood. They have a connection, they care for each others.

Joel didnt choose to save Ellie, he just couldnt stand losing her. He cant "not save her".

You speak about "disconnection" and "betrayal". Maybe that is exactly what we should feel. Joel and Ellie are "disconnected" now that Joel lied to her (last scene in the woods). And Joel "betrayed" his word to Tess and the Fireflies (help finding the cure).

I might be reaching a bit here. At least I find all this fascinating. This game is a masterpiece.
