GameCentral talks with Sony’s European boss about having enough PS4s to go around, countering Microsoft’s FIFA 14 deal, and The Last Guardian.
As part of its plans to cut 1,900 jobs, Microsoft has reportedly shut down operations at Bethesda France, letting go roughly 15 people
Hanzla from eXputer inquires: "If Xbox can care about preserving its games and legacy, what exactly is wrong with Nintendo, trying to kill game preservation single-handedly?"
Ahh yes the good old game preservation of saving all your games to a removable hhd on the Xbox 360, taking it round your mates house, setting up multiple tvs to
Be met with “save data corrupted, please re download”
Or how about removing 360 games
From the store
, download them now or else, and, better hope to god that save data doesn’t corrupt, or it’s lost for ever
Nice one ☝️
It's better than what Nintendo and Playstation is doing. It might not be perfect but at least they are TRYING. Unlike the others.
Trying? Take off the blinders for a moment, mate.
1. A failure to preserve games is just that: a failure to preserve games. Don't try to sugarcoat it: NO ONE is doing it properly. Better than awful is nothing to write home about.
2. At the time of this comment, isn't it the case that you need an internet connection to play Xbox games even if you buy physical discs that are hardly in circulation anymore? I don't have a Series X and I can't verify, but I think that is correct. I'm fairly certain you can at least play PS5 games at version 1.0 (not much of a win really when many games require day one patches). I think Microsoft's all digital, licensing approach is by far more aggressive than anyone else's. They really try to push you to game pass where you lose your entire library by umm.... Skipping a month of payments.
I don't think anyone is doing it right whatsoever. Don't get me started on Nintendo, who goes after anyone looking to preserve their games better than they ever would with extreme litigation.
Don't be a simp for any of these companies. Get it together.
@DarX never speak on Xbox again. You lost all credibility with your internet connection comment. Smh you have 0 clue and misinformed yet speaking on something you don't no squat about.
What has Sony done exactly? You guys keep deflecting to Sony but I am not actually seeing any results, and ai am certain nothing that you can come up with even comes close to what Microsoft has done and what they have tried and failed to do, like tie all your disks to your account on xbone.
Microsoft removed their whole indie section when they moved to the xbone because they were going to only allow games on the service that came from a publisher, id@xbox started after xbone launched and it only exists because Sony embraced indie and Microsoft was forced to cancel their plans and reverse course.
And every single game that was part of games for windows live including disk games (I have gta 4 on disk that won't work) so hundreds of games that use that DRM no longer work unless the company themselves patched it out which of course very few did.
Not trying. Tried. they killed of the backcomp program years ago. They set something up again, but sounds like it's more of an attempt to save the current library on whatever they are planning next. With luck they save everything and more, but let's see. I could see them killing off parts of the OG xbox and 360 libraries. Can't imagine that they would allow us to play Forza 5-7 in the future.
With that said, I do like what they've done and really wish they could have done more.
Zeref
So killing off physical media is trying what exactly. Ms don't really give a fk if you think they do your kidding yourself.
They are not trying this team is established for forward compatability the team is. It interested in preserving Xbox or 360 games.
Just because it's digital only doesn't mean you can't preserve it. Just put it on an external and you have the exact same functionality of what a disc does.
This is just a scammy PR move to distract from the fact they are going digital only and trying to push streaming and subscriptions only.
No gaming company has pushed harder to remove ownership than Microsoft.
Without discs there is no preservation, preservation can't be done by the rights holders it can only be done by the consumers, anything else is a lie.
Anyone remember xblig which Microsoft removed their whole 360 indie section removing hundreds of games from people?
Do you know you can put your games on an external and preserve them that way? There are no benefits to discs. ZERO. Idk why some of you are still obsessed with them.
Because games like Persona 5 exist. It's STILL V1.00. On Playstation, that's a win because 1.00 is installed on the disc—no need to download anything.
If a game does not require any updates, it's all on the disc.
Extremely low bar in the modern era, of course. It's not much of a win by any stretch.
But for now, physical media does have a purpose, at least on Playstation.
That is factually not how game licensing works, try plugging your hard drive into someone else xbox, It's not going to work, and it won't work if the licensing servers ever go down.
Anyone remember games for windows live.
I have around a dozen games, some on Steam itself that will not work because Microsoft shut off the licensing servers.
I do. I STILL have games (Gears of War being the big one) I cannot access because Games for Windows LIVE is total garbage and no one has held Microsoft accountable.
You don't have an Xbox apparently. Because you can 100 percent plug in your external and play games from it on any Xbox console lol. You just have to be logged in to prove ownership.
"You don't have an Xbox apparently. Because you can 100 percent plug in your external and play games from it on any Xbox console lol. You just have to be logged in to prove ownership."
Damn how many times do people got to explain your idiocy to you? You can take a copy of Persona 5 like someone used as an example and play that game on ANY console WITHOUT logging in which means I can lend the game to a friend without internet and they can play my game. Can you lend your hard drive to anyone without logging in for them to play? NOPE. That is a huge difference and if you think otherwise then sorry you're an idiot.
"No gaming company has pushed harder to remove ownership than Microsoft."
Ubisoft is literally erasing games people bought from their libraries... My PS1-3 discs are useless on modern hardware. Nintendo's re-published and resold almost their entire Wii U library, and the eShop is completely dead with no BC mechanism in the Switch software. Microsoft publishes everything they make today day one on Steam and Xbox/Windows. Sony only brings to PC the titles they think you might want some years later and Nintendo won't even design a functional long-lasting joystick.
You're absolutely trolling and not serious if you think Microsoft today is the worst offender.
Yay steam
Not everyone fks with computers though. The disc is still the best way as a console player. Period.
How do Sony and Nintendo feel about these discs from 2001-2013?
Don't be stupid, you know Xbox is the best at this today.
Nobody wants this. Sales or the lack of it in the case of XBOX is very telling. I wonder how the adorably all digital series X will fare. Adorably dismal perhaps?
Only time will tell, but for from someone like me suspecting that Xbox is trying to gracefully exit the console market, that "forward compatibility" team is trying to get Xbox games playing on Windows PCs. I mean, it's nice that they're not planning on exiting with a "enjoy your games while the hardware still works" message, so that's nice. They still have a brand to protect via Microsoft so probably feel obligated to have a better exit strategy.
That is not their plan, their plan is to transfer users accounts to the cloud.
Phil Spencer himself said as much a few months back, plans could have changed but I think people are reading way too much into one statement where Phil said he would allow Epic on xbox because he wants to be able to sell xbox games directly on other platforms. Aka, instead of selling Sea of Thives through PSN he wants to have an xbox store to sell his games on PlayStation without giving PlayStation any money.
Again, it's extremely unlikely that Phil plans to put PC on xbox and licensing would prevent them from just giving out other publishers games purchased on xbox copies of thier games on PC, Microsoft does not own their games.
The thing that doesn't align with the cloud strategy is the giving up on exclusives. You'd still need strong exclusives for cloud streaming - it's still a "platform" , just with a lower upfront hardware investment. I feel like they've learned what PS learned with PSNow long ago. We're not ready to stream games and it's only gonna lose them money to try at this point
I would love that, I'd buy up some of the Xbox games if they could run on PC, like the Rare Replay, Lost Odyssey and Dead or Alive Ultimate, probably a pipe dream though.
This is the one that nobody can argue microsoft is getting right.
The idea of moving from one gen to the next and losing all previous purchases is mind blowing.
Console should and could be like pc. Theres absolutely no excuse for it, especially in the digital age.
If you want to keep game collections forever just torrent/usenet rom collections of consoles. When you have the physical game on a drive it's yours period it will never go away.
So this is a bit misleading.
Nintendo I'd argue maintains some level of preservation consistent with Xbox as they have offered a method of playing older games since the Wii vua the virtual console and NSO they also frequently remake their older games like links adventure.
Are they perfect far from it but there's some level of reverence to the past output. They have made a lot of mis steps and frequently try to go after its own community but there's efforts being made and new games are coming to NSO frequently with games that never saw release actually getting launched like star fox 2.
Let's also not forget the fact that this Xbox preservation team and the PlayStation preservation team while we are at it because if you remember correctly PlayStation set up its own preservation team roughly two years ago now they have not done anything yet.
Xbox ended its backwards compatibility program a few years ago now and as a result no new 360 games are being brought to current generation consoles this compatibility team is established for forward compatability making sure xsx games run on Xbox series successor hardware.
In short the new Xbox team isn't interested in preserving Xbox and Xbox 360 games that currently are not backwards compatible and yes that list is overwhelmingly huge with heavy hitters like the orange box becoming unplayable as of a few months back
Just a reminder: MS' marketed "backwards-compatibility& quot; is not true backwards-compatibility, save for the Xbox One generation. You must download an emulator-wrapped recompiled version of each OG and 360 game. When that authentication/download server is removed, the older games will no longer "work". The discs are only used for authentication. Moreover, only ~65 OG and ~650 360 (mostly LIVE Arcade) games are supported. The program is nowhere near as comprehensive or preservation-secure as people may have been led to believe.
Former PlayStation boss Jim Ryan has said that the PS5 is "on track" to become SIE's "most successful console ever."
Now he wants to say good things about PS after he laid off a bunch of ppl.
Real classy Jimmy.
Is that the worst you can come up with? Because if I was criticizing Microsoft I could easily list a dozen things only one of which would be the 5000+ people they have fired from their gaming divisions in the past 16 months including everyone who worked on producing physical games.
Let me remind you that PS5 is selling faster than PS4, they just had the hit live service game Helldivers, Spider-Man is still charting, they have already released Granblue Fantasy, Rise of The Ronin, and Final Fantasy Rebirth and Stellar Blade is right around the corner, they also have Silent Hill and two Kojima games in the works. They also have all the big gatcha coming out of Japan, Korea and China lined up for their consoles, which let me remind you that Genshin and Honkai Star Rail made close to a billion dollars last month alone.
They also have PlayStation Portal which is selling as fast as they can make them, and just around the corner they have a 33.5tf console coming out which don't listen to the BS is going to be awesome and supporting it is going to be easy since every game already has two modes so "quality" mode will only need to be unlocked for PS5 Pro's and existing games will be able to easily have PSSR enabled for them.
So yeah, things are looking really good for PlayStation, and the second half of the generation is going to be huge when all the PlayStation developers start releasing their PS5 Pro Enabled games.
"Is that the worst you can come up with?"
I'm. Sorry what? Its called facts. I forgot you love Jim Ryan even if he doesn't know or care about you. None of them do. The sooner you touch grass and grow up the better.
Ok cool so what's the point of saying all that? I know all that.
@Lightning
Except it wasn’t a fact. Ryan has left PlayStation already. The layoffs that we saw with every publisher recently were after Ryan. So nice try.
"Except it wasn’t a fact. Ryan has left PlayStation already. The layoffs that we saw with every publisher recently were after Ryan. So nice try."
That was all Ryan before he left clearly. He stepped down officially a few days ago. He was doing his good byes he even took a picture with the London Studio only to shut them down days later. Don't try and shift blame or change history it was all him.
I thought the layoffs were bad. It's bad when Microsoft does it and when Phil Spenser spoke about it 99% of the comments on this site were about how Xbox sucks. When someone is commenting on how Sony layoff people, you instantly find persons that run to defend Sony. This type of behavior is not good for gaming. Remain consistent in your principles no matter who is doing the wrongdoings. Stop waving your pompoms to one side because these companies don't care about you or their employees.
Omg https://en-as-com.cdn.amppr...
Not even a few days ago just yesterday he left.
Hiroki Totoki is temporarily taking Jim's spot doing Jim's work for 7 months until he was gone April 1 . Now anymore foolish deflection from you ppl?
@divine
Layoffs are bad, but we get these guys with zero credibility, who all of a sudden want to bring up layoffs because an article says something they don’t like. All the while they never bothered when MS did more than twice the layoffs after spending 68 billion to destroy multiplatform segment of gaming. The double standard SHOULD be mentioned.
I just want to see those single player first party games.. i do not like the silence from ww studios
I'm sure you also would say the same thing about Phil Spencer to be logically consistent.
You tell us, he laid of orders of magnitude more people than Sony did, and you remained silent.
Are you guy's defending Jim Ryan just because he was part of playstation?
The guy did nothing good for the industry the entire time he was head of playstation.
It's his bad decision's that got people fired .
@Frost really now? Go find the article and look through the comments and you'll see my comment mocking MS. This isn't about MS though just the usual whataboutism from you.
But cool keep making up more stories it's in your head kiddo.
Funny to see Jim Ryan is suddenly a hero on here now.
Fun fact:
MS laid off 1900 employees from MS studios.
Sony laid off 900 employees from Sony Interactive Studios.
I hope you liked the classy MS after spending 68 BILLION on buying up the industry, then firing people.
I have PS so why would it upset. I'm not a weirdo did Jim Ryan do lay offs or not?
Because you always seem to be upset when PlayStation is going good.
And Ryan retired in September. Sony laid off 900 employees recently. Every other large publisher did as well, including MS which laid off the most developers at 1900.
For the sake of proving your objectivity, please show me any comment you made about how MS showed its class by laying off developers after spending 69 billion on cannabalizing the industry. No joke, did you make any comment like that?
It's your head wanna see fanboy in everyone else because you are one. Not how it works I'm afraid.
Ryan announced his retirement in September. He was still in office Hiroki was training under Ryan hence why we've heard from Hiroki and not Ryan. Ryan officially left yesterday.
That's means Ryan did those lay offs. For God sakes just google it since it's so hard hard for you to understand.
"Sony laid off 900 employees recently. Every other large publisher did as well, including MS which laid off the most developers at 1900."
Yeah... No duh...
Wait class? MS showed no class they were candid about the lay offs and their strategy. They said no patronizing words as far as I know.
Other than that I don't know what you're even talking about. What comments do I have?
Haha bravo! way to ignore what I said, conveniently. But, that answers my question. You need say no more.
I'm sure he was saying good things about playstation before they laid people off, not sure of your point
He lays off ppl and shut down a studio then wants to say good things about PS, not hard to understand. He was saying good things because he worked there, of course he said good things at the company he worked for.
They all do, so I don't know what you mean.
You say that like Phil didn't just give thousands of people the axe while you stood in silence. We see your hypocrisy... We know you're mad that your box just got the Dreamcast treatment, but at least try to remain objective.
Nice wrong assumption as always. You're a funny guy though.
Where I mocked MS
https://n4g.com/comments/re...
Anything else I can shut you on? You know know first hand I'm good at that
Ps5 is a turd of a console. If it outsells the ps2 Itll be the greatest paper tiger in gaming history. All pop and no fizzle.
Also Jim Ryan by the way everyone PS2 now sold 160 million total.
Still yes ps5 is a fantastic console if the games library in it's later half follows past cycles of showing off what the true hardware capabilities are we are still yet to see it's best games.
Rockstar is going to make the console sing with GTA 6.
With Xbox floundering talk of EU stores no longer stocking the games going third party fanbase is more divided than ever and Nintendo doing its own thing even delaying (rumour) switch 2 till next year PlayStation is running seemingly unopposed I'm not sure if that's a good thing but it's the reality we are in
So should you keep staff you don't need in any other business? That's called socialism.
And yet it lacks exclusive..... I remember the PS3 days when Sony was underdog and releasing exclusive after exclusive
5 exclusives this year before it’s even April/may
Ff7
Stellar blade
Hell divers 2
Granblue
Rise of ronin
Silent hill remake conning soon too + can’t wait to see what their game for Xmas is
3 years in, and PS5 has more exclusives than PS3 after the same time frame.
What ya chewing?
So again I'm baffled by the responses from this forum defending a guy's statement when Sony themselves:
A) had to cut the same % of workers as MS and had to close some studios (reason unknown for Sony since N4G established that it's not capitalism or needs to make a profit).
https://n4g.com/news/259282...
B ) mentioned in an Investor's call that the console was entering the latter half of the life cycle and was expecting a decline in sales due to missed projections.
https://www.pushsquare.com/...
But hey it's great news for Sony because if they are on track to be the most successful console ever.
So just picture what they would have achieved if they had met sales expectations and not cut jobs.
Perhaps selling twice as much as the Ps2 console?
Beating Quest3 for VR unit sold?
London Studio would be working on Blood & truth 2?
***had to cut the same % of workers as MS***
I agree they suck, but playing % game is weird.
***mentioned in an Investor's call that the console was entering the latter half of the life cycle and was expecting a decline in sales due to missed projections. ***
No no no. You don't get it. It's both! /s
Yeah, I don't understand how you can say it will be most successful unless you talk about the total revenue it brings in, which is an unfair comparison considering price increases and market reach.
*** London Studio would be working on Blood & truth 2? ***
Or, now hear me out, something actually good? :P
"I agree they suck, but playing % game is weird."
It's the metric used in business and finance to evaluate the situation of a company (health, performance, etc)
For example, stating I only cut 5 jobs from a staff of 10 is much worse than cutting 100 jobs from a staff of 1000 hence why you always see a % of the total workforce when there's a layoff.
In the case of both companies, it's around 8%, and by business practice, it's a healthy move showing that they are willing to trim due to expectations of lower sales.
I do wish that the ppl from London Studio are affected by new projects within Sony (if they are still employed) or that they are working on a new VR idea. They are talented folks who managed to create great games with the limited resources or mandates that they had.
***It's the metric used in business and finance to evaluate the situation of a company (health, performance, etc) ***
People aren't percentages to me, I guess.
1. MS laid off thousands of people, several times more than Sony did.
2. PS5 is nearly 4 years old, new consoles typically drop 6-8 years after the previous, with the previous being supported up to 10 years total. There is nothing out of the ordinary by saying PS5 is in the latter half of its generation.
3. London Studio didn't make money... so they got closed. Nothing out of the ordinary there either.
@Frosty
I'm sure you have sources other than your beliefs to demonstrate that Microsoft laid off several times more compared to Sony, especially in regards to Xbox and Playstation since we saw the same pattern here on N4G where MS announces Layoff to cheer off the community with MS can't manage jack Sh*t followed by a similar wave from Sony simply due to different date for the fiscal year.
In 2022 MS laid off 1000 jobs out of all MS (1%) In 2022 Sony announced 90 layoffs from Playstation only.
Regarding console life, I believe that you forgot a pandemic slowed everything to a crawl hence why ppl still feel that we have yet to have true PS5 and Xbox Series X experience but that's my point of view.
totally agree with you on last point regarding London Studio.
It's hard to say if it will become more successful than the PS2. I know it will do very well overall. As a gamer I can't keep up with all the stuff releasing this year
currently at 50 Million, expected to sell 22+ Million this year
there's no doubt the PS5 will be breaking some records
GTA 6 launch will also bring a massive boost to PS5 Sales and the all new 33 teraflop PS5 Professional model
i think GTA6 is gonna help the console seel a shit ton, but 160 mio iii dunno.
maybe hes talking about hoe much money it brings in due to games sold on it. who knows.
Ps5 is easily the worst console in Playstation history. It's not even close. Vita was better.
i goddamn agree
Good interview and it's always the Sony people with a since humor.
Aren't they giving away 14 days of plus with every PS4 purchase which also allows those people to play DriveClub and Resogun for free, day one?
I'm not saying it's a bad thing, we all like free stuff or just better deals with our purchases.
yeah ,how this is bad is beyond me, i remeber the days were consoles came with a game, so when you got home you had something to actually play, times have changed so you can play free demos and such but a free game is a free game
It's really not odd at all.
