Japan Shuns Wonderful 101, 3DS Domination Broken According to Major Retailer’s Weekly Sales Charts

The Wonderful 101 is one of the exclusive titles Nintendo has been counting on to push sales of the Wii U, but according to the weekly sales charts just released by major retailer Tsutaya, Platinum Games’ new title might have failed quite badly to perform, at least in Japan, while a couple new PlayStation titles breaks the weeks-long domination of 3DS games.

Tsutaya’s charts are looked at by many as a quite precise indication of what the more “official” Media Create charts will look like on Wednesday, thanks to the fact that the retailer has a very high number of stores spread across the whole country.

This site just lists its relative position, not the number of copies it sold which is intentionally misleading. The game was never expected to be a smash hit.

Also, Madworld made a profit in the end and Bayonetta 2 is going to be million seller worldwide guaranteed. Its one of the few games that people actually want that have been announced for the Wii U.

If it sold the number that it likely sold in that position (better ranking games only sold only 17k in 7th place - Wonderful 101 is at 16th)...then it is completely irrelevant that they "only" shipped 30,000 units, because they obviously didn't sell half of those.

Nothing is guaranteed and the Wii U needs a lot more buyers for that to become a reality.

Depends on how you look at it. While it might have been good because they all didn't sell, it might be bad because a lot of places ran out of stock. We could totally be looking at a situation where more populated areas sold out, where as less populated areas didn't. Hard to say, but assuming they sold a third, I could see a lot of places near me showing out of stock and me just not bothering with it.

Mostly licensing issues, even if thius particular one doesn't suffer from them because it's the Original Generation server so it doesn't use popular anime robot. But the OG titles are less popular normally.

In the end, it's not about being a huge success. That game is made to bolster the good hardcore game stock on wii U to sell systems. Nintendo needs the steady stream of games for that reason. I think they knew from the start that it wasn't going to be a blockbuster. It's gonna be another reason to get a wii U just like pikmen 3 was. These games will make up for their cost down the line when there are more wii u systems.

i was honestly expecting Wii U and their games to sell well in Japan / Asian region. Not much for doom and gloom, but Nintendo must be disappointed by this.

Maybe Zelda will sell well... then again, if not many people buying the Wii U, how can there be many people buying software. A price cut is also not possible atm for the Wii U. And sadly for them, next gen is around the corner, and pre orders suggests a high demand for new hardware.

I hate to even bring this up but you never see Misaka_x_Touma or PopRocks359 in these articles. In every good article about Nintendo's Wii U getting slightly better sales or Nintendo's games selling better.

You bet they are there to talk about it and Misaka is there to brag while throwing it in your face. "Where the Wii U haters at now" or "The 3DS dominates everything".. "The PS Vita is dead".. but no when someone who is just being a realist points out that the Wii U is still doing poorly and will need more time. Not even in an offensive manner just simply pointing out the fact the system still isn't doing so well.

PopRocks isn't so bad but its the bias nature that these people project that annoys me to no end. Well considering I just moved to a new apartment, I wasn't all that inclined to leave many comments today. But since you noticed my absence, here I am.

What's for me to say about this that hasn't already been said? This game failing in its home region is nothing short of disappointing. I can only hope it does a turn-around in other regions because this will do nothing but send a message to Nintendo that new IPs are not welcome in the industry.

I am pretty sure I have seen you in the Vita section before when the Vita did sell better. I specifically remember you doing the exact same kind of things. And no I haven't played it, but I have seen the Direct and multiple articles on it.

At first look you think it's a game for kids, but then the game shows itself as a Core experience with alot of difficulty. Not the easiest game to market (or maybe it is)

Any reason why conception II sold better on VITA? Most 3DS ports/multiplats are better on the VITA but that usually doesn't affect sales. Of course certain genres (Fighters, shooters) sale better on VITA but still. I'm surprised.I geuss japan is showing my VITA some love. Now localize it please.

I feel like Wonderful 101 is a game everyone is saying is great, without anyone explaining why it's great. And when people try and explain the concept it really doesn't sound that great. And watching gameplay on youtube does it no justice. Would really like to be convinced this is a good game.

It's already out in Europe and I've heard almost nothing but good things about it from others.

It's a quirky, original IP that focuses on action in a toybox-esque setting. The combat is about managing your team of heroes while analyzing the field for incoming attacks, using the properties of your different weapons to best deal with the alien enemies. Weapons are formed by drawing on the GamePad, and how you draw them will decide their strength and range. Beyond that, there's a lot of others systems that lend to combo potential and mobility, making for a pretty dynamic action game. It has a lot of optional areas and challenges scattered throughout the levels, a lot of upgrades and items you can purchase, and a lot of content that exceeds the scale of anything Platinum has done to date. The game also has leader-boards and co-op challenges. The game rewards practice and doing well, like every P* game.

If that doesn't sound appealing to you, then it may just not be your kind of game.

I didn't really like the Wonderful 101 demo at first. But i played it again the other day and i really liked it this time because did i better on it. Comes to show that its pretty challenging which i like. Seems like a game that's all about the game play. If people by this they will not be disappointed. Hope the sales get better.

Now I just wish the Vita itself will do better...it deserves it (could be amazing if it did 3DS numbers) DS and 3DS are truly king of handheld gaming devices...but the PSP did really well in the end and hope the same for the PS Vita.
