Pretty sure touch anything is pretty revolutionary. Just about everything we use now has some type of touch interface, phones, TV's, monitors, laptops, tablets, ovens, fridges, microwaves, cars... The list goes on.

Your examples are not accurate to justify your claim. Yes, many devices have touch capabilities, but in many cases it is their main/only way of interacting with it, such as smartphones and tablets. When the touch functionality becomes an optional extension of the device, such as with touchscreen PC's or the DS4 controller, the aspect becomes less of a priority, and can lead to becoming more of a preference or a situational feature.

In addition, many of your examples involve devices that utilize simple commands; changing channels, setting temperatures, changing times - very benign operations, which are hardly the case when playing a game with a controller and many other buttons and many other actions going on.

I'm sure the touchpad on the DS4 will offer players some functionality and/or conveniences, but revolutionary and groundbreaking? I just don't see it. If technologies such as voice commands, motion sensing, and facial recognition can be played off as nothing but gimmicks, I really don't see how a touchpad on a controller can be seen as anything but as well.

But seriously though i dont know how good the ds4 is but 360 controller was the best for games besides the d-pad imo the sticks on the ds3 were rubbish convex shape let thumbs always slip. But the ds4 fixed it supposedly and the one fixed their d-pad. The real question is whats better for gamers? the complex rumble system inside x1 (trigger rumble or the touch pad? Personally i think the rumble looks cooler but we will see. Also in terms of tech the x1 cvontroller is ahead- wifidirect>bluetooth.

WifiDirect allows you to use your controller from 2 football fields away and it transfers data at speeds up to 250mbps.

Bluetooth 2.1+EDR is a lower power consumption and has a data transfer rate of 3mbps...

Does sound like a plus, but I cant think of a practical use for it atm. Any ideas how this makes your controller better or your system for that matter?

@oddworld- it cuts input lag by 2-3 milliseconds compared to bluetooth, pretty important for online multiplayer and will overall provide a more fluid experience. The controllers standby is also more efficient- turns off when you leave the room and the second you touch the controller its on and already connected compared to ps4 you would have to turn on pressing a button and wait for it to connect. The trigger rumbles is impressive- it changes based on the gun you shoot or the car you drive. The touchpad was in vita... not too impressive- personally i thought a mini lcd touch screen would have been cooler but this touchpad looks to be a gimick the sameway six axis was. If you by chance grab your friends controller kinect tells the system who is holding it and switches the in game players accordingly, overall all these things working together really does provide a seamless experience. You also mentioned the system- i know specs are slightly weaker but i dont mind giving up to get dedicated servers on 3rd party games like call of duty- pretty happy camper here- but cheers on whatever system anyone buys.

Firstly it's great for those that have their reasons or preferences, but it's certainly not perfect. It's not perfect for me and it's not perfect for many millions of people who don't find it comfortable or a logical or ergonomic design. I've covered this time and time again, so there's no need for that.

Lithium ion. My DS3 has been used for 6 years of recharges and still works without problem. However, you go to amazon, search for 'DualShock battery' and buy it for less than $10, follow the very simple install procedure and not worry about it again for many years. I understand AA recharging works for you as that's the only option you've got, but limping over for it is a bit lame, especially since Microsoft is supposedly the one leading us into the technologically awesome future of gaming.

It feels like the dualshock 3 but with more grip, sublime triggers, a wicked touchscreen, way better analog grip ans a sweet share button.

I held that thing and i could only imagine what it would be like playing bf4 kzsf, or ps2. i distinctly remember how easy it was to go from l1 l2 r1 r2. the triggers were my favorite feature because i didn't get to see the touchscreen on or anything.

i hope sony does not change the design with ps5, i don't think it can honesty get any better.

I think what makes the PS4 controller with the touchpad great is that they aren't reinventing the wheel. They aren't asking you to put down the controller for some activities and picking it up for another like Kinect. There is no calibration each time someone new wants to play. It's all at your fingertips without changing your device. There's no having to tell a new player if they need to put a controller down or not. It's simple and straight forward.

The X1 controller looks great though too BTW. But I'm glad Sony put the tech right into the controller instead of a Kinect clone. Making motion controls optional was a good move.

PSVita is far more interesting with the rear touchpad.
Occupying "free" fingers and still being able to use the thumbs.

What I am most excited about on the new controllers except from all the tweeks are the rumble feature in the triggers on the XBO controller.

WiiU uses a resistive touch screen (the old fashioned less accurate type), the DS4 uses a capacitive touch pad (newer, better tech), how exactly is WiiU's better (as an input device not a viewing device).

Rumble triggers sound cool, but so does the much improved dynamic rumble of the DS4.

Yeah that's true, so the sensitivity on the DS4 should be much better then on the Wii U.

The XBO controller has improved general rumble as on the DS4. So that's not a feature the DS4 has that the XBO do not..

But I think they can do some fun things with the speaker on the DS4.

It's going to be fun to test out the new controllers when they start shipping out. Personally I have more faith in the XBO controller...but that's only because of the rumble triggers.

To be honest, I like both new pads (X1 and DS4). When it comes to new features though, I think the DS4's touchpad wins for practically mainly.
It has a lot of potential I believe. I'm sure the trigger rumble adds to the immersion in racing games etc, but it's limited to being a form of feedback rather than a form of input, so won't be useful like a touchpad is.

PS4 has a weak launch line up and its not even out yet. I dont get why people automatically assume it will sell like crazy^^ Because the ps3 did well in the end of its lifetime? The Wii sold way more units than ps3 and that did nothing for the wiiU at all.
Hardcore fans will buy one anyway but as we know there is only one thing that sells consoles: Games. We've seen it with the PS3, the Vita and the WiiU... PS4 will have like 10 games and no backwards compatibility. Thats a pretty bad deal for 400$ if you ask me...
Now if I dont have a console at all PS3 is still a sweeter deal this christmas. Cheap, gets GTA V, huge library of games (including new stuff like Watchdogs, AC4 etc), free online... Just my personal opinion.

I can't see the touchpad...which isn't revolutionary today...revolutionizing console gaming at all. We already have this tech on our smartpads, ipods, phones, kindles, computers, tvs etc. So this same kind of tech has been out for years...and it hasn't revolutionized gaming yet. On a side note, as many on here are bashing the AA batteries situation, I agree.....and why? Because in the UK the play and charge kit is being sold at £19.99, I'm sorry but haven't Microsoft screwed their fans enough? Gamers should not buy this out of principal.

It's not like it's a separate controller or anything.

I've got average to small hands, and holding a DS3, my thumbs overlap almost to the first whole joint. The DS4 is wider to allow for the touchpad among other things, but it'd have to had more than an inch to the controller's width for any part of it to not be reachable without letting one hand go. So if you let go, you've either got the hands of a young child, or some motor skill issues.

It's a bit of a silly article really, yes its a good feature & will be a different experience to the Xbone but it's ridiculous to think that Xbone couldn't do something that could match it with Kinect.

But it wouldn't be nearly as accurate, and be subject to the inherent lag a device like Kinect has. Not to mention, it'd require either a third hand, or taking a hand off the controller to use.

For example, for Kinect to enable some sort of OWL-like commands for, say, Halo, you'd have to take your hand off the controller and give the physical command. The time it takes the camera to interpret and process that motion for it to translate into an in-game motion would take more time than simply swiping your thumb on the touch pad. And, assuming it gets the motion right, it could still be too late, and you could be dead.

As for the article, I'm not reading it, because even I'm not 100% sold on it being revolutionary. But to say the Kinect can do what the pad can do or vice versa isn't being realistic.

I completely agree with you that for Kinect, doing a gesture may well mean taking your hands off the controller which in itself would be annoying but that still doesnt mean you cant do it on Kinect.

From what I've heard, although not seen, Kinect is lag free & pretty accurate too. The DS4 with touchpad is definitely the better option but I cant see anything at all that would not be possible to crossover to Kinect.

with the kinect you will hav to do a full motion and completely let go of the controller maybe even have to stand up in some circcumstances with the pad you just use your fingers

when you can transfer you're game to the controller,not a handheld or tablet you're controller.that's one of the best features to have.i will take that over rumble buttons and a touchpad any day of the week. plus a camera,mic touch screen and a built in t.v remote.yeah i'm sony fanboy but nintendo controller wins this easily.too bad it cost alot to produced. you can even go on the enternet,youtube,nextflix and video chat with the gamepad.i'm using the gamepad to type this comment.

IMO Sony has made the most significant advances on their controller, they needed it to be bigger/ wider, not all gamers have small hands. MS as well has improved, but didn't have as much to improve. The majority of Xbox gamers were very happy with the controller, so they just tuned it a little. Sony on the other hand, listened to developers and gamers and made the more drastic, necessary changes along with other advancements/ innovations per feedback. I am eagerly waiting to get my hands on my DS4, and will judge for myself and expecting to be impressed.

idk what people are complaining about the ds3 size so much i have huge hands and find no problem with it at all i had botht the 360 and the ps3 this gen and could switch back and forth between the 2 like it was nothing... never understood i think people were just to stubborn to learn the controlls

Just asking. Because you did mention "Sony fanboys" and "PSBore". Seems like you are worried about the likely success of PS4.

Just do not think that both consoles will be 99% the same. They are both next gen with the same CPU. They have different GPU specs, although both AMD. They have differing Ram types, although both 8GB, and different ways of accessing that memory.

They are ultimately after different markets. Sony have gone back to basic and gone kick-ass for gamers and developers so all their eggs are in one basket, albeit a golden one. Microsoft are after the casual TV integration and wii audience.

They seem similar on paper but the differences will be more and more clear as time passes. It is a good thing. We have great powerful consoles at last. Enjoy!

What happened to sixaxis? Warhawk used it for flying and there was that game lair and ratchet and clank used it.

But that's it for my game collection.

New inputs are ALWAYS going to be a good thing, new ways to interact with a game are always welcome.

But if its not used, its just extra expense. The burden is on sony to show developers that it is worth their time using by being creative. I just hope they show it off better than they did sixaxis.

Just watched it. Look good. but remember we got tech demos for sixaxis last time and look where it is now.

Im not saying I want it to fail, I loved sixaxis. I just want to see it used in fun and novel ways by more than the odd developer out for a gimmick to drive sales.

Hopefully we will see another decent ratchet and clank game. Insomniac always used new inputs in fun ways. What was it called the tornado gun or something?

6th axis will be used for that new ftp flying game for sure but other than flying games and mini games i cant see good use for it besides random events in games like in kz campaign was used to turn pressure vales and stuff

Gotta say I been eager to get my hands on a PS4 since the reveal in Feb. But just recently the amount of kudos towards the new controller by developers and reviewers has made me just as eager to try it out.

The Blue & Red ones looks awesome. Both 360 & DS3 controllers had their advantages but both have benefited, it seems, from new updates.

The sixaxis feature was not really adopted this gen. The touchpad seems to be getting a lot more attention from developers.

Because the touch screen helped Wii U so well the touch pad on Vita helped it so much. I love the vita and love my 3DS but a mousepad on a controller or handheld is not going to revolutionize even a dirty gym sock.

The track pad idea was already used on the Ouya controller. It serves little purpose and its poorly placed on both controllers.

Also, if you're keeping up with the media spin, yesterday we saw an article about why the creators of Infamous: SS used touch controls in their game. Today were seeing an article about how those same touch controls are going to "revolutionize" gaming. Next you'll see a topic on NeoGAF also praising this idea and using much of the same language. This is how real PR works.

I disagree. The size matters. The PS4 pad you can swipe and touch it easily while still maintaining your thumbsticks. The Wii U is like comparing PC's from 1960 to 2013. It's backassward.

The touch pad is just that though. A pad. It's not a screen. And while it was initially awkward to hold the Wii U gamepad, once I got used to it, I found it surprisingly comfortable. And as far as the touch screen is concerned. Once Muscle memory takes over, it is a non issue. Also, most touch screen buttons that are used during live action oriented gameplay are generally only located at the edge of the screen in convenient to reach places.

The problem with the Wii U, is that the only way to really "get" the system and its controller is to spend a lot of time at home with it. Demos just don't do it justice.

Oh and you're right. Size does matter. and that large screen in the middle really does add a lot. I'm sorry you are incapable of seeing the wisdom of it. Though that can hardly be helped as we now live in the age of pious fanboys. The days of the gamer are long dead.

That said, I think the DS4 is really slick. I just wish it took Sony less than 15 years to finally go for an ergonomic design. I'm going to try to look into getting and extra DS4 if someone creates a workaround for using the controller on PC. Because It'd be pretty awesome. Though, I'd probably be getting an extra one anyway for the PS4.

As long as the controller is comfy in hand & the buttons all feel awesome & responsive, is all that matters, as cause when all is said & done, 99.9% of us & the best games will all control by standard methods....MS need to worry more about an console sku re-design without Kinect 2.0, before controller changes, as that unwanted Kinect & attached $100 price hike is what may affect them more.

Wow! It's almost like a button or something but on a touchpad! Neat. I mean, stealth kills by touching both ends is way better than pressing 2 shoulder buttons right? It's loads more exciting to press a buttonless button than it is to press real buttons. Oh hey smartglass! But that's stupid cuz it's got an actual visual screen. Ds4, the blackberry bold (minus screen) of controllers!

Devs should assign at least 2 hotslots/items for the touch pad for "basic" usage. Great for MMO/RPG games.

For "advanced" usage, maybe 4 items based on gestures (swipe up for item 1 /skill 1, swipe left for item 2/skill 2, etc.)

Very practical, if not already the most, "core" gaming feature.

Technically, it COULD revolutionize Console Gaming for the lack of buttons.

I had hands-on time with the DS4 or whatever it is called and honestly I was not impressed. I loved the DS2, got used to the DS3 but with the DS4 Sony seem to make it a tad bit smaller so the the analog sticks fit in just a bit tighter. The Sticks do feels better but the overall size of the controller is just a bit small for my taste.

The XB1 controller feels better in the hands, but if I hand to pick a controller that is better for gaming in general it would be the DS4, I just hoped they would have reverted the size back to the DS2.

Sorry, in short no it's not a revolution.

One thing that's hard to dispute is the number of extra buttons you get on the PS4 controller vs the XB1 controller. Isn't that better? How is less better? From that perspective I don't really see how fans of Xbox can say it's no big deal. Just because you can't envision the use of the touchpad doesn't mean that it's not brilliant and the future of game controllers.
