Gamescom: Battlefield 4's Graphics Lacking on PS4

You cant compare BF4 to KZ multiplayer graphics because one has planes, choppers, vehicles total destruction and the other not. All this affect graphics and performance.

Comparing KZ to BF isn't fair. Shadow Fall doesn't have the same scope of BF and GG devoted ALL their time and energy on the PS4, as opposed to DICE who had to spread out their resources over five different platforms.

People must understand that the specs of the PC used to run BF4 demos would smoke a Console (Dual AMD Radeon HD 7970s and AMD FX-8350 4ghz). I run an AMD FX 8350 and a single 660ti. So my personal machine doesn't compare. Also the majority of PC gamers aren't running in SLI yet. So even they won't match the performance of the rig used for BF4.

All that being said of course the PS4 un-optimized demo will look subpar. Way to early in the game to bitch and moan about the PS4 demo specs imo.

The whole last paragraph of the article sums this up.

It's a work in progress, and if they optimize the game then this is what you should expect to be playing come launch.

This is not surprising and it's also the reason I picked up the Killzone SF bundle with my next gen purchase.

Killzone is the only shooter that is coming out with just the next gen in mind. Most AAA games coming out this year are all coming out on PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U etc. They are all going to be watered down experiences for the PS4 and Xbox One.

We are going to see the same thing with Watchdogs, AC4, CoD and any other game coming out on current gen hardware being ported to next gen.

You can't compare this to KZ:SF? You blind? The opening sequence of KZ dwarfs BF4 in every respect. The draw distance in the cityscape is unmatched. The water shader used for all those water falls, real time reflections, lighting, the "air strips" with moving vehicles, ton of NPCs is nothing but amazing. Given the SP runs 30fps - and yet, all those weather effects made it into the MP and it still runs at full resolution and 60fps.

If Dice scales BF4 down just to reach 60fps this is a massive mistake. But not really a surprise after what surfaced here lately. It looks the same as previous games. Disappointing. Really.

Its a big ask knocking out so many versions stretching your team and on new console hardware. If you get 720p/60FPS and similar assets to maximum on PC then you shouldn't complain

I would like to add the X1 has the move engines that takes loads off the GPU/CPU as well..(you know when the PS3 had the weaker GPU but still came out on top due to the cell processors) It also has a custom audio processor that can help the CPU.
So you have DirectX 11.2, 32MBs of eSRAM, hypervisor, custom audio processor, move engines, not including the cloud because its unproven until otherwise.

Yes you can compare KZ with BF4. If one is more fun to play because it has been optimized for the PS4 instead of being the gimped version of a pc port then KZ will be the handsdown winner on the PS4. It will deserve the money spent on it.

Yes but with a PS4 I get almost the same graphical quality (these days, last gen was different) for the fraction of the costs (PS4: 400$ - PC that outmatches PS4: 800+ $) AND incredible exclusives (Uncharted, God Of War, The Last Of Us, etc. etc.) regularly.
And do you know what? It's the exclusive releases I'm looking forward to the most every year, NOT the multiplatform games. My favourite games of this generation were mostly PS3 exclusives with few exceptions. I was a PC gamer myself for a long time but times change and I can't see me coming back. Of course I have a PC with MotionJoy that runs all latest games effortlessly but I don't feel the attachment to this machine the way I feel it with a console. You PC-only gamers are a funny bunch.

I'm all in for KSF and BF4 but KSF is 12v12 max. BF4 is going for 32v32. Big difference with all those players running on the screen and trying to maintain 60fps. I'm sure they will get the console ports as close to PC specs as they can. Just know it won't ever match the ever evolving PC specs.

I hate when PC gamers mistaken "high end" for "enthusiast" PC. Price/Performance ration is always on the side of consoles. PC usually brute force their way through games (zero optimization). PC gamers also leave V-Sync turned off to increase their FPS. You're paying over $500 for your Mobo/System RAM/GFX Gard/CPU/and HDD then you better run games better than a console. But you'll find it hard pressed to achieve the same results. PCI express will never be as fast as integrated memory chips.

Should be noted the Pc version everyone is playing is running 4k resolution.
Another is the ps4 demo was running on a older dev kit. gamespot has said this.

Speaking objectively, if i have a decent PC, I would upgrade my PC to play this. If I don't, but I do have a HDTV, then I would buy a next gen console.

It will be a sub-par experience especially for a MP shooter. Also as IGN stated the graphics will be significantly worse than any of the demo videos seen to date.

I moved to PC in August 2012 BF3 is like night and day on PC compared to console. People please stop expecting BF4, or most games for that matter, to be maxed out like on a PC. I'm not sure where the idea came from, probably the media, but it needs to die a quick painful death. You can't expect a $400/$500 machine to outperform or perform on the same level as PCs with gfx cards in them that are more expensive than consoles and the actual card is half the size of a console too. It's just not smart to think that. The media wants this console vs PC war just like Sony vs Microsoft. it's all marketing. Be happy there are new consoles coming that will give you much higher graphical fidelity than previous gen. games at launch will NOT look identical to gaming PCs, and no one should expect them to. Maybe identical to each other as in XB1/PS4 though. That's why it came out that the BF4 demos at E3 were running on super computers. Remember the article that said "this is the pc that will be used to run BF4"? That PC had 2 AMD 7990s in crossfire in it just those cards alone are $700 each. Those cards have been out since earlier this year, old now. That's not counting everything else that was in that computer. A machine like that is capable of running BF4 in resolutions MUCH higher than 1080p and with 4 monitors or more at once if the person wanted to. We are talking about running the games above 120fps too not 60fps, at the highest graphical settings possible. That type of stuff just isn't possible for console and that's not a fanboyish thing to say... it's just factual. I expect PS4/XB1 to run the game on medium settings 1080p at 60fps or high settings 720p at 60fps, but scaled down without all PC graphics enhanced to maximum. That's idealistic for consoles and very good IMO.

Most of the things you said are right but i'm still not convinced that battlefield videos won't be possible in next generation.

I for one think they are using that high end pc just so that they don't have any problem running it and they still not used to the next consoles or they have some kind of problem with the dev kits or they still didn't optimised the consoles versions yet because they are focusing on pc first then port it.

Games are always made with consoles in mind , even the best pc games. That's why developers don't max the consoles in the first years. Look at the witcher 3 , did they say the pc will have better version ?. Did battlefield 4 developers said that too ?. The only ones that said it are call of duty developers XD . I'm not downrating the PC , i'm just saying that launch games should have no problem to bring anything they want even 1080p with 60fps. No one used the full power yet. And when they do i will be glad since PC will benefit from the easy developing on both consoles so pc will be always lead platform if developers want it then simply port with downgrade .

Its ones own personal opinion on value for the $ on which one is better for said person. Having a 1000$ PC may be great but a home console person could argue they find value being able to play a exclusive on a home system that the PC group wont have. Where in your point the value is in PC after you get into the nitty gritty over higher cost on console games and subscription fees.
My argument is the site is comparing a high end PC to a home system. Its apples and oranges of course your going to get better visuals on a high end PC. You can clearly see this if you go back and watch the footage, at times it ask you to hit keyboard stroke keys(press F to counter knife) not xbox one buttons. PCs seriously aren't that much more expensive, especially when you factor in the fact that almost everyone needs/uses a PC for other things. I blame this on the unrealistic promise of 60fps for a game that looks this good. Some of you may disagree but 60fps on console (in the real world) means shortcuts taken with the look of the game. Take Rage for example... The principal market for B4 is the current gen. Like FIFA 14 ( IGN), B4 won't differ a lot of the graphics of the 360/PS3 versions, maybe in the details and in the number of players at MP. 150 million of old machines are a huge market, the same will happen with games like watchdogs, AC IV, Need for Speed Rivals, COD.

Only games like Destiny, TitanFall, Killzone, Forza, Infamous, etc, games dedicated only at a next gen could show a huge leap in technical specs.

People are forgetting several things

1) KZ:SHadowFall is ONLY being developed on 1 platform, therefore only 1 platform needs to be concentrated on

BF4 is being developed for 5 platforms? (PC,PS4,ONE,PS3,360)

That is A LOT of work and you can't expect a launch title to be properly optimized for PS4, plus they have budgets/time lines to meet and who knows how much time they had to work on each platform.

2) You can get away with poor/lack of optimization on PC, as high-end PC hardware has enough grunt to compensate for this, thus still making it look great and perform great.

PS4 hardware really doesn't have enough grunt to compensate for lack of optimization, therefore can impact the way it looks and performs very easily if not properly optimized and unfortunately this is the reason for the PS4 version - lack of optimization due to reasons above

You will probably see better optimization for mulitplatform PS4 games when
1) PS3/360 phase out
2) PS4 gets a bigger install base

The cost/profit benefits just aren't worth for publishers spending more $$$ on PS4 when it has a smaller install base.

If any game, it was BF which adapted a lot of technologie used in KZ2/3.

It was one of the first PC/Multiplatform titles which introduced deferred rendering, something first seen at this scale in KZ2.

It was one of the first PC/Multiplatform games introducing job based scheduling. Also something presented in KZ2.

Dice documents the PS3 as it's first target and using it to backport to other platforms.

I think Dice did not have enough time to bring this to next gen consoles, probably focusing on PC and current gen consoles. And it shows. There is work ahead for them, and eventually they'll master it.

So the amazing visuals and gameplay from BF4 on the PC was powered by:
- dual AMD Radeon 7970 graphics cards(6 GB of GDDR5 RAM)
- 8-core AMD CPU
- 8 GB of DDR3 RAM (16GB at E3)

Now of course next-gen is not going to compete with those specs, and the PC system itself costs about x10($4000) more than next-gen consoles.

It's all about how much time DICE have to optimize the performance for the PS4 and XBOne before release, and I'm pretty sure DICE wants to make the game as best they can for all platforms. I think the article's writer is grasping at straws for some hits. If the game was already released looking like a dogs dinner, then I would fully understand it, but it's still underdevelopment.
