If you compare it to diablo II, It's not even worth going back to it.

diablo II cap was 100
diablo III going for 60 to 70

Diablo II exp they drop 2 new characters

To be fair, D3's level cap is Level 60 + Level Paragon 100.
The always online is what really annoyed me, add an offline option like in D2, and I'll consider buying it.

I'll stick to Torchlight 2 and The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing and if they fix its myriad of issues i'd be playing Path of Exile more.

All of these are preferable to the mess that was and is Diablo 3.

I've played Torchlight 2, Van Helsing, even PoE beta as a founder but srsly D3 beats em all by a huge margin. Its just way more polished.

Yep played torchlight 2 an seen the competition Diablo 3 despite some of its faults at launch it trumps all it's competition. Far more polish an the combat gameplay is much more fun.

There is not even close to that many people playing. Most of the accounts there are for multi-boxing. When you have say 100k people multi-boxing 1million accounts playing really don't mean much. Blizzard is not hurting money wise but they have lost a lot of fan appeal from the trash that is Diablo 3.

That statement is highly debatable and at most anecdotal. Regardless of unique user numbers or multiboxing there are over 12 million is confirmed sales. Even if only 10% of the people that bought the game are still playing that is over a million unique users. Add in the upcoming console releases and the coming expansion and it will eventually be one of the biggest selling games in a decade. People can talk about the loss of fan appeal till they get blue in the face but the numbers just don't support it.

I don't doubt that they will sells tons on consoles. Total sales of a game does not transition into unique users multi-boxing is not a unique user. When 1 person has 4 accounts that is 1 user. And more than a few of those have had accounts banned and had to buy more copies. I am not arguing the fact that is sold tons of copies I am just saying there are technically not that many people still playing the game. I would also bet most of those accounts are even gold/item farmers from other countries. That is just how games like these work.

It was a fine article. I agree with your points and I will most likely not be picking up this expansion either... Which is crazy. If you asked me 2 years ago if I would pass on any blizzard product I would say hands down no. Oh how times change.

The game was basically announced before the event.

This is completely false. After the second patch the loot system and auction house were overhauled. You can get through the game without ever going into the auction house.

Again, you have no idea whats going on.

After a month or so following the release of Diablo 3, I stopped playing, I had 2 level 60 characters and was stuck with my friends at the second act at Inferno. I was convinced by then that Diablo 3 was a mess and that I could find a better alternative.

I tried the Sacred series, Path of Exile, Torchlight one and two as well as Van Helsing; and recently I went back to Diablo 3 to check out the game once more. In my opinion, Diablo 3 is, overall, the game in its category (at least as far as modern games go). It's not perfect, and the loot system is flawed, but the core of the gameplay is well polished and meant to be fun. As for the expansion, I'll try it, and I do believe that if done right, it can truly make Diablo 3 a worthy successor to Diablo II.

This is almost my exact experience with the game. I thought it was too hard and and had many flaws but before I knew it I had 200 hours clocked in the game. Since then many of the problems I had in the beginning have been resolved and even now I continue to play. It seems to me that Blizzard must at least be doing something right.

What really is funny is that D3 managed to maintain an mmo like status even tho its not an mmo. Quite a feat. The remaining Diablo clones dont have that many concurrent users.

D3 made its money last year and yet this year it still has a huge base. It was meant to be a playthrough till u get bored which is what it excels in. I got bored of playign T2 and POE and other clones before I finished the damned story even

D3 is way ahead and a vocal minority cant do shit to it.
N4G is like the basecamp of the vocal minority.

You can defend D3 as much as you want (it needs to be defended) but with Workshop support T2 is head and shoulders above anything D3 could and has achieved. Yeah, there are people playing D3 but hardly any of the ones I have encountered have played D2. They simply purchased it because it was a Blizzard game like everyone else, myself included.

All the genuine D2 fans have moved on to bigger and better games. Why do you think Torchlight 2 is seen as the spiritual successor to D2. It is essentially the same game with a cartoonish art style. D3 gimped so much and is barely worthy of the Diablo name.
