How a subscription-based service could save the Wii U’s bacon

Gamer Thumb opines that the time is right for a subscription-based games feast for the Wii U.

A suggested model, the Triforce, is discussed, which would see three free games a month and a moving roster of free Virtual Console games made available to subscribers.

I kind of like the fact that there are no subscriptions or pay for online play on Nintendo consoles.

LoaMcLoa3901d ago

If it works like the current PS + then I'm okay with it. But I don't want to pay to just play games online...

FlyingFoxy3901d ago

Yep it is a large problem with console gaming, now even with PS4.

Unless you stick with Nintendo, you are better off with a Gaming PC because even though initial costs are higher, you make savings through no membership subscription & cheaper games.

herbs3901d ago

What a stupid and horrible suggestion there are two consoles that support subscriptions and there two replacements coming out will do the same. Nintendo is trying to differentiate itself from its competitors appealing to different demographics and giving consumers options.

I would pay $5 a month to play GBA/N64/Gamecube/SNES games for sure.

Partner up with Sega and add in some Sega Genesis classics and I could see millions paying a subscription fee.

It would have to be $5 and only $5 a month though.

$10 is too much for people, but $5 is always not much money to people.

How is a "nintendo plus" service be of that much use when there is not enough content to begin with ?

And you're dreaming if you think that many people cares about the virtual console part .

It would be a fine extra , if they want , but that's not even close to a solution for their issues

Summons753901d ago

Yes because a year after the PS3 came out they had the thousands of games that are on their marketplace plus their full library they have now.... GET OVER YOURSELF

It hasn't even been a year yet. This generation of game consoles has 7-10 years left in it but you're acting like because they have a handful of stuff now that's how it will be in 10 years. You're also nuts if you think that people didn't go nuts over the Virtual Console of the wii and the xbl/psn arcades. They were the biggest hit of last generation. People threw money at the screen to play the old nes, snes, n64 games they haven't played since they were kids or kids today getting to play games they never had the chance too. Getting the marketplace up and ready doesn't happen overnight, it will take a few years to have it full of games.

Have you even seen a major console release before? Ps3 had 6 games with it released, with a high failure rate and it was overpriced.....look at it now. The 360 had like 12 games or something like that with a uneasy failure rate.....look at it now. Anyone is a fool to count the WiiU out so fast and I'm willing to bet will be complaining about the PS4.Xbone not having any games it's first year (dedicated generation exclusives, the duel gen games like AC4, Watchdogs don't count)

I've said it once and I'll say it a million times. You don't buy a console for what it currently has, you look at the lineup of upcoming games and buy it off that. WiiU has a great line up and so will the Ps4 after E3 rolls around.

KonsoruMasuta3901d ago

They have more than enough content. All they have to do is make digital ports of some of their classics. There are people who would throw money at the screen.

@Summons75

Nope , you get over your angry bitter self . The article is claiming it's a cure for the woes of the wii u .

Like i said it's would be a nice extra , but not the end all solution .

I've already got mine waiting for Bayonetta 2 and X , so f*ck of my back already and stop yelling at everyone that doesnt drink the koolaid or dont claim it's peachy .

The only way to save Wiiu's bacon is by releasing more compelling quality titles and greater 3rd party support... what happened to going back to your roots and focusing on the core Nintendo?

diepdiep3901d ago (Edited 3901d ago )

You are wasting your time coming here just to say that and not even read the article.

rickmodus3901d ago

so if the wiiU is dead does that means the Vita is also?

Benjaminkno3901d ago

You won't be here a year from now.
But be sure to get some cream for your butt-hurt.

Wii U games that still haven't been ported to Switch

The Nintendo Switch is potentially nearing its lifespan, and several Wii U games haven't found their way over as ports yet.

I think it's better to leave games like AC: Amiibo Festival and Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash forgotten on the Wii U. Best case, they are mediocre games; worse case, they are very bad. It was a dark time for the Wii U, and the first only exists to sell Amiibo cards, whereas the second was put together in a couple of months with a shoestring budget, and it shows.

The rest of the list does have some really cool games, though. I would love to see a remake of Star Fox Zero with decent controls, and Xenoblade X doesn't require that much modification to work.

How would XCX work without dual screens functionality?

Cacabunga3d ago

Same as Paper Mario color splash. One of the best wiiu games and getting even better with dual screen. Same reason why i prefer Splatoon 1

This article leaves out Nintendo's most controversial game to date devils Third.
I personally found the cover system really fun in that one compared to at the time most fps games completely lacking one.

Stevonidas3d ago

Devil's Third is HIGHLY underrated.

repsahj3d ago

They should remake Starfox to the switch 2. Very beautiful game during gamecube days.

Chocoburger3d ago

Kirby is always ignored or forgotten by people, so good to see it mentioned here.
Play Kirby Canvas Curse on DS, and then play Rainbow Curse on Wii U, they're really fun and unique 'platformers' without any actual jumping.
