Mobile games rely on the "freemium" model of in-app purchases to stay afloat. Low entry costs and small micro transactions rule the field, nickel and diming customers for everything from costumes to level unlocks. It's something that traditional handheld games have, for the most part, avoided. Pay $40 upfront and you get your game, no progression unlocks or stat boosters.
That is, until Shin Megami Tensei 4 shipped with pay-to-win money and EXP boosters as DLC. How did this happen and what does it say about the future of handheld gaming?
The Nintendo 3DS is rife with high-quality titles, many of which should be ported to the Switch.
I agree some games should be. Like Super Mario 3D Land without the 3D 😆, Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon as well.
Dude, what about The World Ends With You? Some good games are listed but several are missing.
Alex S. from Link-Cable writes: "When it comes to naming gaming’s most revered and fan honored labels, it’s hard to top Atlus. The Japanese studio is acclaimed for their deep, involved and intricate stories and paired with world class gameplay may be notorious for releasing their games in low print numbers, but those who do play them, know that they are special. For today’s Top 10 list, we want to shine a light on the best games to ever sport the Atlus logo on their boxes!"
I personally liked P4 better than P5, but P4 at least deserved to be on the list as well.
Development is currently underway for Shin Megami Tensei V on Switch, though it’ll likely be some time until its release. Shin Megami Tensei IV, meanwhile, has been out for a while now – in two versions no less, SMT IV and SMT IV: Apocalypse (subtitled “Final” in Japan).
Nothing new. It even appeared on actual home consoles.
Pay to win is no problem when the game is offline.
yeah same old things
I got the $30 from registering both Fire Emblem Awakening and Shin Megami Tensei IV. I personally dont mind the amoun of DLC. As for what the DLC are, they're fine if you don't want to grind. The SMT games are MUCH harder than the Persona games, so if you want to play the game without being frustrated, the option is there. The Clipped Wings DLC are pretty awesome though. The angels aren't that good, but they are fun boss battles.
In SMT4's case. It's a damn hard game at times. Some people might not be able to tolerate it.
Fire emblem in lunatic and lunatic+ was absolutely pay2win.
It's not the end of the world, but beating games with this sort of aid takes away some sense of achievement.
